I feel honored that Nicaraguan food has been shown twice in the past week. Viva Nicaragua!!! 🇳🇮
I'm Cuban, but grew in many foster homes. Living with many different families helped me grow and part of that was eating their foods. I lived in a Nicaraguan family for years. Loved their nacatamales and gallo pinto was life. Lol
This recipe is what I was raised on with the exception we added a prune, raisins and capers. This is a great recipe!
Yes, I've always had it with the prunes and capers. Such a delicious and unique addition.
We use prune too
I remember using a very spicy round looking red or green chile
And pork belly and a Chile
mi gente! finally something to do with Nicaragua, most of the time I feel like people forget Nicaragua exists
Gabrielle Esther fo real!!
I know right
true omg
I hope they do forget about Nicaragua. We haven't had good experiences with international involvement in the past.
I'm so happy!! I love seeing my culture being shared on such a large platform!! Viva Nicaragua!!❤️🇳🇮
I’m Mexican-American and I have a friend whose parents are from Nicaragua and through him I got a taste of real Nica food. By FAR my favorite Nicaraguan food is the Nacatamale, I like it better than Mexican tamales. My favorite is the Estelian Nacatamale, it’s stuffed with chicken instead of pork and it’s from Esteli and Ocotal, Northern Nicaragua.
Omg so happy Nica power Yes porfin 😍😍❤❤❤ ¿ Donde esta mi Gente Nicaraguense? #asisomosnicaragua
Citaah 🙋🏻♀️ here and hungry after watching this 😂

Wow I was JUST gonna comment on how you guys center a lot of videos around Mexicanos, and then I saw this. Lol, thank you for including us nicoyas! Please do it more!!
I am Italian and my husband is Nicaraguan and I have been trying to teach myself how to cook Nicaraguan food for him and my children. Thank you for this video! I love making nacatamales for Christmas morning. Gracias, mucho besos!
You go girl! I'm Nicaraguan and learning how to make these now in my 30s, I can kill it with an Italian meal but still don't know how to make these..crazy lol
I'm Nicararaguenze I know how to cook pretty much everything except nacatamales!!! It's time!!! To master this 🙌🏽 😍 girl!!!
Awh! About time something Nicaraguan shows up! I remember stuffing myself with these for the holidays ❤❤❤
I like mines with raisins or ciruela but that's an optional ingredient.
And that accent! ❤🇳🇮🇳🇮
Same here 🙌🏽🙌🏽
Finally Nicaragua!!! Always felt misrepresented on this channel because us Nicaraguans never get any videos about us
These bring back memories. As a non native Spanish speaker your mom is very easy to understand.
Most parts of Nicaragua our Spanish isnt that strong like people from Chile :) LOL
I thought the same thing.
Mom spiting out straight truth with nacatamales
Love my Nica's.
Funny your spanish sounds like mine, I was born here so It's nica but with an American twist lol, the Nacatamales look nice, my Mamita makes them huge, with some bread and coffee, I would be good for hours.✌💛😊
Nacatamales are the best! Especially for breakfast on a Sunday Morning with cafecito Presto and Pan!! 🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮
Karen Arguello el pan de nicaragua. PICOS!!!

I love you Nicaragua I wish I was born their but the good thing is my parents are god bless you Nicaragua 😍😍
Love when my grandma makes these.
This was so beautiful to watch, she speaks just like my mother ❤️
Me encanta que en 5 minutos han podido explicar el procedimiento y los ingredientes, finalmente un video donde no dan tantas vueltas para llegar para llegar hasta el final
I’m Mexican pero I’m so happy they included a Nicaraguan video cause I want to learn more about our Latino brothers and this looks amazing!
Ok. A couple of changes.
I prefer fresh masa (or Nixtamal) from a tortillería if you can. Best to get "Masa quebrada, simple." That means less fine if a grind and without any added Manteca. "Masa fina" is for tortillas. If not then Maseca.
2) The recado added to the masa needs tomatoes and naranja agria. Ir is better if it's passed through a sieve (don't want tomato seeds or skin, or pepper skin, they add bitterness) Should have added more hierbabuena (mint) and it should have been put through the blender too, not just added to the masa.
Most importantly, use Manteca for the masa, not cooking oil. Put the Manteca in the pot first for cooking. Buy some pork belly and make your own. You can fry or bake it to render out the manteca. Sometimes the local carnecerías sell their own Manteca which is often really good. Don't use any commercial lard like Crisco. Yuk. It's unhealthy (hydrogenated) and tastes nasty.
Don't use aluminum foil. It gives a nasty bitter metallic flavor to the nacatamales, and ruins them even if it's easy. It's not that hard to use the banana leaves with the right technique.
Boil a big pot of water. Cut the sections of leaves with scissors if they aren't already cut. Put them in the sink and pour boiling water over them. That softens them, cleans off dirt and oils, and removes some bitterness from the plantain leaves (hojas de chagüite).
Most importantly, use two leaves for each tamal. Ojo!! They have to be arranged on a bias or diagonal pattern to each other and to the direction of the folds, or.. they will split. Not like in this video.
You can clearly see the direction of the banana leaf fibers. Place one on top of the other, but offset so that they form a star with eight points. After you fill the nacatamal, lift the two sides and fold together. Make sure it's on a diagonal to the fiber. That means that neither of the banana leaves should be square to your body. Each should be at a 45 degree angle to you. Once the first fold is complete, form the tight rectangle with the ends, and tie it up.
I usually cook mine 3-4 hours. I would suggest boiling a big pot of water while preparing the tamales. Then carefully pour that instead of cold water over the tamales in the cooking pot. That will save you 45 minutes to an hour heating the water to boil.
I haven’t been to Nicaragua in a minute, but in South Florida (I’ve lived in all three counties) they always give us the nacatamales in aluminum foil. I guess it really is hard then haha
Yes!!! FINALLY 🇳🇮👏
Hell yes!!! I do not have Nicaraguan food in Vegas and I miss it so much. I am going to try to make nacatamales :)
That was the cutest way to present a recipe and the meal. Mom and daughter. Loved it.
She forgot to add the lard to the masa while it cooks. If you don't add it the masa will be hard as a rock. The lard helps keep to keep the masa firm yet soft, the more lard you add the softer the end product will become so its an experiment on that ingredient until you get the proportion you like. Just to give you a clue even though the masa may look soft while it cooks it will harden up when it gets boiled. So you don't want it super soft nor hard but in the middle. It should look and feel like a bread dough that kinda sticks to your finger but release on the side of the pan when its being cooked.
She used vegetable oil instead. I know that's different from how my family does it too.
I will use vegetable oil too to make them healthier...😊
Born in Nicaragua & proud of it!! 🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮
I love the format of this video. Wow with the mom’s voice as she’s giving instructions they’re showing you I’ve never seen something, so cool I have to give it five stars for this video it’s original. I’ve never come across this in any UA-cam video when it comes to instructing you how to cook. And of course, having the moms voice I love it’s just right up there. I’ve never tried nacatamales before. I’m very curious to try some now.
Thank you for this video, I decided to use this video to make them myself & it is perfect.. Thank you to MITU & to the Nicaragüense Mom ❤️🙌🇳🇮👌 so yummmy good! 🥰

My mom and grandmother would add a little peas and carrots, also one raisin.... I've never had the chance to watch them make these. Thanks for making the video. When the video started I swore that it was my mom narrating and my wife thought I was talking to her on the phone 🤣
I gotta cook this up on some quarantine shit. Never had the privilege to make it myself but my family has them on special occasions.
I want to try this recipe. It looks do simple, I hope it has that flavor I'm used to. Nicaraguence 🌺🌺🌺🥰🥰🥰🥰

Thank you for translating and making it so easy!!
Me encantó, suena fácil...gracias
Que lindo que incluyo la llamada de su mami! ❤🇳🇮😊
My ex-bf was Nicaraguan and he'd take me out to a Nicaraguan restaurant in el monte cali where he introduced me to nacatamales. Hands down the best tamales i've ever had. Rice, onions, tomatoes, potatoes, chilis and a main staple like pork, turkey or chicken all stuffed into 1 giant tamale. The history behind the nacatamale is even more fascinating it was created by the nicarao tribe who are part of the indigenous Nahua people. Mexican tamales are great but they don't compare with nacatamales in size, flavor and the amount of fillings it has.
I'm ready for Christmas already!!!
Love love love!
Your style of making a cooking video is differnt, entertaining, and to the point. not to mention i love your recipie. Thank you!
wow que video mas lindo, lo ame !!!!
Watching this as I’m eating a nacatamal!🤤🇳🇮
This looks awesome!!
OMG YES! Nothing like eating a Nacatamal y tortillas in the morning. YUM!
No. Just no. Nacatamal and tortilla are not a good match. Hahaha Just joking .
¡Tortilla amanecida con café! Y un roncito pa' sacar el clavo.
I've always wanted to learn how to make these because they're so good. Never thought to look to youtube
Such a good video. Thank you.
NICARAGUAAAAAAA
Omg finalllly
Omg looks good i will try to make this thank u
I've never seen red pepper added but I've also had them 1 prune and a little chile pepper for spice. I heard the masa is the hardest thing to make
YAAAAAAAAAAA I LOVE MY NACATAMALES😮💕🤗
my family makes it with pork and pork fat pieces (basically chicharrones), tomato, raisins, plums, rice, though no potatoes (iirc). and we make the masa with lard bc when we eat nacatamales it ain't to be healthy!
Así es. Manteca cómo se debe. Y nada de papel de aluminio.
YESSS NICARAGUA REPRRSENT!!! 🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮
Thank you for sharing ❤
That's so cool, never seen a tamale made that way :)

My family is miskito and Nicaraguan cuisine isnt really known . So this video is nice.
Nakis Sma? Pain? Manká.
I’m Nicaraguan and we do it so different. 😮
Me gustaría saber que tipo de aceite utilizo y si no es necesario pasar por fuego las hojas de plátano? Gracias
Great idea😁 to use the foil I cannot ever fold the nacatamales😣
Cook for an hour and a half on what heat? Boiling, medium, simmering??
Medium high for a medium boil. The pot should be steaming. I cook them for 3 hours. If you add the water already boiling that saves an hour.
hola mi niña preCCCCCCCCCCIOOOOOOOOOOSSSSSSSSSSA
you know thats nica por alli
Falto capers, raisins
✨🌽✨
Are you from England? I live here
Where did you get the sour orange sauce?
I looked for it at Tesco but couldn't find it
Amazon
As a substitute if you're in a pinch you can squeeze an orange and lemon then mix em together.
I have veganized many of my family recipes and this one is next on my list. So excited!
I love the masa so much I could straight up eat it by itself without all the other ingredients👌🏽 I know it’s weird af but idc
No, you are completely right. They put too little masa in the Nacatamal.
This isn’t how my family makes nacatamales but there still really good
2 in one week😩💙🇳🇮
