Hearing Ian say "my old band" kinda makes me sad, cause Don Cab is still my favorite band to date. Battles is close but nothing will beat the sound of What Burns Never Returns
I didn't know what math rock was until I heard about this band a few weeks ago. They could make it pretty big, but even if they don't they still have a sound that is quite their own. Hopefully the latter is more important to them.
Even when John Stainer was in Helmet, he hardly used the cymbals. He accompanies alot of jazz rhytms in his drums. Even when he was in Helmet those drum tracks made the music stand out more. Plus most jazz drummers hardly use their cymbals.
To everyone calling it pretentious: what is the music "pretending to be"? In what way is the music ostentatious? There is nothing more ironic than people misusing the word pretentious because they simply bandy it about without knowing what it means. Battles rule
John Stanier is awesome, but I'm not so sure about this. I'll have to listen more before I decide. I had the great experience of being in a band that opened for Helmet back in the 90's. He's awesome to watch and learn.
I think it sounds good... I'm not pretentious.... But I've read your comment and now I've come to the conclusion that I'm confused... So now I ask you, my friend abbaroc, what am I to listen to?
I don't "pretend" to like this stuff, I fucking groove the fuck out to this stuff. And if you knew anything the guy with the afro (Tyondai Braxton, who's no longer in the band) is the son of a really good jazz bandleader named Anthony Braxton, who's very well respected.
So you want every band to do as little with their music as possible? Music is basically about trying to create something unique. Pretentious music can still be good music.
HUH??!! That..is not really True!! I'm thinkin' maybe you haven't heard many jazz drummers-'cause I'd say MOST,if not all,DO use their cymbals quite a bit.The Cymbal is the main time-keeping element in most modern jazz..the other drums tend to "comment" or play off of what the cymbals & hi-hat are doing.
i don't care about pretension, but i have seen this band live and given their albums several chances...i don't get it. and i like some weird shit. it's just not appealing to me. personally, i find it kind of annoying and devoid of feeling. not hatin', but wanna give my honest opinion, especially since all i hear from people is how amazing this band is and i just do not see anything special about them. but hey, to each his own.
i don't get how's their music pretentious??? i really hate that synthesied vocal or whatever was done to it, i hate it, it irrrrrritates me so much, i wish i could just shout it up - still i love the playing, it's soooo gooood. and vocals makes it almost some kind of a disco hit:/ (as for me) so - shut please up and just play!:)
I like all sounds of Battles, but Mirrored was my favorite. I really hope that one day.. ...Tyondai will reunite with the band.
I'm really glad UA-cam featured Battles on the music page.

this is the closest sound i've heard to what math rock sounded like back in 2002
I think to really experience the excitement of this band you have to see them live....it's an out of body experience.
certainly on the list of bands that changed my life at a young age

To everyone calling it pretentious: what is the music "pretending to be"? In what way is the music ostentatious? There is nothing more ironic than people misusing the word pretentious because they simply bandy it about without knowing what it means.

The chorus, full of actors/ The chorus doesn't matter.

Pretentious music can still be good music.

Weezer meets experimental math music
Zing.
@Shitloger lol wrong
Battles are really talented musicians, But the chipmunk like vocals just put me off.
i love their sound though. I love the song Snare hangar.
Jazz implies improvisation and solos. Battles have neither.
Make music and show us what you can conjure up .
Of course you don't get this band you probably listen to the fucking radio.
