  • In 1979, the producers of "Diff'rent Strokes" spun off housekeeper Edna Garrett onto her own show. Set at an all-girls' boarding school, "The Facts of Life" centered around Mrs. Garrett and seven young schoolgirls. In 1980, new TV producers took over production of the "The Facts of Life". Their goal was to improve the show's ratings. They did so by firing more than half of the cast, including four young girls: Felice Schachter, Julie Anne Haddock, Julie Piekarski, and Molly Ringwald. This video tells that story.
    This video compilation uses material from six sources: "The Facts of Life (Biography Channel)", "Remembering The Facts of Life (2006)", "After Facts (2006)", "Nancy McKeon (Biography Channel)", Julie Piekarski's Taco Bell commercial (1985), and a clip from "The Little Chill" (1986). I would have liked to have included clips from E!'s excellent "True Hollywood Story: The Facts of Life" (1999), but it appears to not be available on the Internet.
    Of the four biographies used in this video, "Remembering The Facts of Life" and "After Facts" are more fair and balanced in their portrayal of the 'lost girls', and are better sources than either of the others. Unfortunately, Warren Littlefield's comments went unchallenged in the Biography Channel's Facts of Life retrospective, and those comments were somewhat disrespectful to the actresses in question.
    The four "lost girls" appeared on "Facts" occasionally afterwards, but their roles were usually small. Molly Ringwald later (1986) remembered her sole guest appearance as her "worst job": "Worst job: Having to go back to Facts of Life as a semi-regular after they kicked me off. It was humiliating." She never went back after doing one episode as a recurring actress.
    Julie, Julie Anne, and Felice, however, never became break-out movie stars, and thus made guest appearances on "The Facts of Life" in Seasons 2, 3, and 8, as well as appearing in archival footage in two flashback episodes in Season 5.
    The four actresses were nominated in 2008 for a TV Land Award, in the category "Favorite Character(s) Who 'Went Missing'".
    Anyway, enjoy!

    I can still recall being so excited when this spin off show first aired, then very disappointed when things changed. Good to see the cast members talk about their experience. Especially the ones from the reboot of the Mickey Mouse Club from the 70's. :)

      I felt the same way. The girls who were let go were some of my favorites. I was disappointed that they kept Natalie and Tootie. I thought they were both so annoying and such over the top characters. I wanted to see more normal girls. Lisa Whelchel was my favorite after that, but as time went on even her character wasn't much fun anymore. Lisa started to gain weight and it seemed like they started making her character very serious. I'm surprised the show lasted as long as it did. It just seemed to me like it got sillier every year or something. I thought the worst was when they brought the handicapped girl on. I can't remember the actress name, Geri? I think she had cerebral palsy or ms? Anyway, I just remember she could barely talk and it was painful just to listen to her say her lines. She was an aspiring comedian before they put her on the show and I always thought her jokes were terrible, so that raised the silly factor. I always wonder why they thought bringing her on would be a big ratings bonanza. All I can say is she must have had a friend in the casting department or something, that wanted to do her a favor. I thought the set up and idea for this show was great, but something went wrong pretty quick. Amazing it lasted as long as it did.

      @@UncleDuTheWatchman Not that anyone asked, but I think more stuff should be added to the internet, in general. I'm not sure once I post this it will reflect that I am JohnStitt, the original poster above. The episode was 1987's The Rites of Passage(Part 1). I still remember how the announcer put extra emphasis on introducing Sheldon Leonard, who acted in this. I remembered him from It's A Wonderful Life. Also, the supermarket where Kim Fields' mom shopped was Lucky's, on Victory and Fallbrook in Woodland Hills, California. The next day after the show was taped, I called back to thank her again for the tickets, and she was just as gracious. One more thing, during the taping, if something funny was said in a scene, I remember a couple of us laughing extra hard and awkward to see if we could hear ourselves when the episode would eventually air. We were just goofy teenagers. Of course our laughs were dubbed out, if ever recorded in the first place. If you are still reading this, one other famous person who introduced herself to me at that Lucky's was June Foray, who I didn't know at the time but later figured it out. She was very sweet and modest. She basically said she was an actress. I would load her groceries into her car.

    We need a decent show like this today, showing kids how to be good friends, respectful, and respectable adolescents, and just all-around good people. ~ The "comedies" today that include teens, or even younger kids, usually portray them as smartmouth, combative to adults, and very little taste in clothing. As if discipline, and respect for oneself and others is just so très passé. ~ Wake up kids, the facts of life are *still* all about you.

    What also needs to be considered is the redefinition of Mrs. Garrett herself. In Season 1, she conveyed the image of an aging and overweight frump with a rather loudmouthed style and essentially a maid type job that reminded me of Alice from The Brady Bunch. But with the coming of Season 2, we saw an attractive, streamlined and sophisticated Mrs. Garrett with a more sedate demeanor and a more responsible job that required education and training. While she was more or less an arbiter of riot control in Season 1, she was now a confidante and mentor. She literally went from Alice to Mrs. Brady in one season!

      One of the problems the producers also corrected on Mrs. Garrett from Season 1 was that she was one of THREE adults supervising the girls. I never felt she was really in charge in the first season. (In fact, if you watched Charles in Charge starring Scott Baio, that show's first season had the same issue - Charles was NOT in charge of the kids because both parents were still in the house full-time. They corrected that the next time around by having the parents be away for very long stretches of time.) The Facts showrunners got it right on Season 2... she was sole adult the girls turn to for anything.

      Probably because, in the literal sense, these were two different Facts Of Life. The later seasons occasionally featured the "lost girls" , and it was as if they were never close friends or housemates of the girls who stayed. In fact, there was occasional animosity between them. Only in one of the much later seasons was there a reunion among all the first season girls (except for Molly), and the implication was that they were all bosom buddies again. But that really did not make sense, as they certainly were not close at all after Season 1.

      That's probably why she's still pretty. Being in the public eye is a pressure cooker and you can see the results with the bad plastic surgery and plastic look on people's skin --- that is for people who chose to keep acting in front of the camera. Relatively few people are aging well today due in part to constant pressure to look their best. They take short cuts to keep looking good and it becomes worse for many people the longer they're in the racket... Likewise, a larger-than-normal percentage of actors are smokers and that does bad things to your respiratory system and skin. You hear more about the alcohol and drug abuse but you can't swing a mop without hitting many A- and B-listers who aren't a tobacco user, either.

      I dunno. In Season 8, it was by then trying to be too 1980's with big hair and poofy clothes, so that already was a downswing, since that was on the outs by that point, since the 80's were on their way out and the 90's were arriving. But looking at them now, all of them, both the "Lost Girls" and those who stayed in for the long haul all look much more attractive than some of the run-of-the-mill actors going around nowadays trying to be hip, just to stay relevant.

I had a serious crush on Kim Fields. I wanted her to be my girlfriend so bad. I remember crying when I realized it would not come to be. I can honestly say she was my first love interest. She was much older than I was at the time but I was unaware of that. Jo did interact with Cindy and Sue Ann, albeit briefly, in two episodes: getting angry at them when they were making fun of Natalie (whom they wrongly thought was a "loose" girl) and when Tootie erroneously spreads the word that Mrs. Garrett was drunk (she had her pupils dilated at the doctor, and was disoriented). In both episodes, the "lost girls" were brutally nasty toward Natalie and Mrs. Garrett, and it was bothersome that their characters were so assassinated in that way.

    Geri Jewell was also given a raw deal, at least to an extent. Her introduction into the show was groundbreaking enough to improve ratings at a much needed time, and then when the producers deemed that she had served her purpose, they cut back severely with regard to her appearances. Her guest appearance as a troubled child on Little House on the Prairie was supposed to become a spinoff, but was decided against at the last moment. In the end, the girls were divided into two categories, the "older" (Blair, Nancy, Sue Ann) and the "younger" (Cindy, Molly, Natalie, Tootie). The producers evidently ruled to keep one of the older girls and two of the younger girls, while adding another older girl (Jo) who would be a composite of one of the older and younger girls to be let go (Cindy, Sue Ann). In the battle of the older girls, it was a clean sweep for Blair, whose character had outshone Nancy and Sue Ann almost from the start. There was not much of a contest among the younger girls either, as Natalie and Tootie had basically stolen the show at the expense of Cindy and Molly. Besides, there was also the diversity factor. Blair was the typical pretty white girl with blonde hair, while Natalie and Tootie respectively satisfied the need for a chubby girl (who was also Jewish) and a black girl. Jo would round things out by being a white girl with an ethnic and working class background (to counter the WASPy and privileged Blair). Jo would be a composite of both Cindy (a New York jock from a broken family) and Sue Ann (a non-Manhattanite with a strong academic record).

      +atlantic 11561 I think that's accurate. However, it's very clear, looking back on the print advertising campaign of early 1980, that after the first four episodes, the network executives decided on Blair and Tootie being the stars. They were heavily promoted in newspaper articles at that time, and most of the episodes began to revolve around them. So even though Tootie and Blair outshone the other girls, they had help from network executives, who saw flashes of brilliance from these two girls. The roles of Molly and Nancy, never well-developed, never stood a chance alongside Blair and Tootie, and once the decision was made to axe some girls, Nancy and Molly were two obvious choices, unfortunately. Also, you're also quite right about Jo being, at least in part, a composite of both Cindy and Sue Ann. With Jo in, there was no need for a now redundant Cindy, sadly. It would have been interesting to have seen what would have happened if they kept Sue Ann.

    • @atlantic-yq2wr
      @atlantic-yq2wr 8 років тому +15

      RJ Guy That was a particularly odd aspect of the show, given the fact that so many episodes revolved around Sue Ann. I do believe that she led the way among all the girls in terms of the number of episodes focusing upon her. Again, however, the show needed a character who could stand up to Blair more effectively than either Sue Ann or Cindy, hence, Jo.

    • @good03boy
      @good03boy 8 років тому +3

But the three other "lost girls" have lived exemplary lives after giving up acting altogether: Felice was involved in a rescue squad after 9-11, went to Brown, and now works with special needs kids in New York. Julie P. is married with kids, and lives in the St. Louis area, still a Midwest girl. And Julie Anne is married with kids in California, sings in her church, and even took her husband's surname.

    I remember the pilot episode for FOL. It was actually a Diff'rent Strokes installment called "The Girls' School". Cindy and Natalie had not yet been hired. Blair was simply horrible and far too rough edged. She was smoking cigarettes and telling Mrs. Garrett to know her place as a domestic! (The producers definitely tuned her down after that). And I seem to remember another girl who had a speaking part, and was probably being groomed as a regular character. However, she never made it to the series. (She was kind of like Jo, but was not from the streets). I wonder why she was dropped after the pilot.

    When I first started watching Facts of Life I thought so much of the character Mindy Cohn played and a lot of things at the time that happened in my life at the time she was going threw as well. A lot of the problems that happen in life in general I have to say that Charlotte Rae aka Mrs. Garrett had the right advise and this was the first show I actually payed attention to. By the time that Nancy McKeon joined I started having all this anger and hate of life and how people were treating me and I would lash out at people anyone that would come near me actually. I to this day dont know why it happened or what started it but when Jo started on the show I picked up exactly that was how I was feeling and loved so much what Mrs. Garrett said in that one show it made me think about things. All Mrs. Garrett said was before you have a reaction to anything put yourself in their shoes and take a moment and think first before reacting if you would not like it then dont do it. It took many years for me to calm down my temper but I still remember what she said to this day and I go by that in my every day life. So YES I loved Facts of Life When things in my life was not going so well they taught me how to over come it and deal with it.

Of course there would be a lot of girls! And Molly would go on to much bigger things, proving they underutilized her.

    • @atlantic-yq2wr
      @atlantic-yq2wr 9 років тому +9

      RJ Guy Funny how Kim Fields and Nancy McKeon (particularly the latter) would make every effort to embark on later careers that were totally bereft of any FOL references. Nancy was even doing that with made for TV movies while FOL was still airing. On the other hand, Lisa Whelchel would cling to FOL as her only lifeline, even attempting a spinoff with Blair as the new headmistress of Eastland. Mindy Cohn was somewhere in between in that she too wanted to steer clear of FOL, though her attempted spinoff would continue with the character of Natalie. I read that one of the reasons it never got past first base was that Mindy insisted on absolutely no references ever being made to FOL in her new show, just like Sally Struthers insisted that no references be made to All In The Family in her spinoff entitled Gloria. Well, how can that be? Both were using recycled characters from the previous shows, yet they expected the audiences to make no connections with those shows?

    • @TherealRNOwwfpooh
      @TherealRNOwwfpooh 7 років тому +6

      Well, Dana Plato was supposed to jump to FOL with Mrs. G, but it never happened. After Differ'nt Strokes ended & FOL became the only game in town, Dana Plato had a hard time finding work. In the end, she sadly took her own life by committing suicide, with FOL itself having an episode based around suicide called "Breaking Point", which didn't necessarily do well enough in discussing the touchy subject, most likely because no one back then really knew how to handle such a topic well enough. The same goes for the episode involving Leo, a mentally-handicap student from the neighboring Boys Academy next door (which, like many other background characters and set pieces, was designed to get a spin-off too, but it never materialized).
