Thank u so much. Just started photograpy after a long break. For past two years I have been using my huwaei p30 Pro and found that my interest is in Macro. I got Nikon zfc and this macro lens. Still struggling with the settings. But after watching this video i got some ideas❤ and started taking using manual settings🙂

Don’t be afraid to shoot at higher ISO settings. This will let you get to f/11-16 to get more DOF or keep your shutter speed up to keep motion blur out of your new.
That is good advice! A flash is also a good solution for that problem.

I have the same macro lens. I wouldn't say that it's easy, though. Close up, you need to avoid apertures beyond f/10, as diffraction starts to affect the resolution. Best results come from focus stacking, with the lens open. At f/40, you can even get what looks like a dirty sensor, but is actually the dust on the front of the lens! Very small apertures also result in the background being in focus, which detracts from the subject isolation.
Hello Dave, in our experience the lens stays very sharp at 1 to 1 magnification up until an effective aperture (what the camera displays) of f/18. Focus stacking comes with it's own problems and gimmicks, I like to avoid it for natural looking images. I rather use the appropriate aperture to get the proper DOF for the subject, and not worry about diffraction. But we also never go beyond f/22 (effective aperture shown by the camera, corresponding to f/13 in non macro terms).

Nice photos. I just started using my flash for macro & still life in the last year or so. Works great when the wind is kickin up but adds so much more shape & beauty to your subjects. I used the orange defused that comes with the Nikon SB700 & it does a great job making it look like sunlight. But the best thing from the vid is the baby cart for lugging the photo & beach gear with the bike. = Great idea. 8 miles to the Alantic from my home. Happy shooting.

I am new to macro, so I did not want to complicate my first video, but looking at the images of my hubby I realize that flash with a diffuser makes a huge difference for the images so I am planning on taking that next step. The colored diffuser is a great idea!
The baby cart has made photo excursions so much easier. Not having the backpacks and tripods weighing down our backs is a game changer for day trips. 😉👌

I am new to macro photography, I got this lens. I have to get really close to the subject (~10cm) to get 1:1 on the tiny screen. It is too close. Is there any other setting I need to change to achieve 1:1 from a bit further away?
Hello Aalap,
the minimum Focus distance of the lens is 0.29cm and you only get 1:1 at minimum focus distance, so if your front element is 10cm from the subject, that is correct. Explanation:
Minimum focus distance is measured from the sensor plane to the subject
Working distance is the distance of the lens front element from the subject

the Raynox DCR-250 does not get you a longer working distance, so disregard that part of the previous comment.
The Raynox will only get you higher magnification, but the working distance will be even smaller.

@@JournEpic-Photography Thank you for clarifying further. The Raynox does look interesting, albeit reducing distance further. A quick check reveals it clips on at the front, not between body and lens, so no issues with the focus-by-wire only system in Z MC 105. Will check it out in the future.

@DianaPhotography Many thanks Diana. I have problems seeing through the screen on my z9 when it is sunny. I hoped this might be the answer to my problem. 🙂
It does have a 1000nit bright screen, which could be a fix. You will be buying a lot of gear, and not cheap (Ninja V + SSD + HDMI cable + NP-F type battery + video cage or somekind of hotshoe holder) for the external monitor. You also get a lot of added function (screen recording, N-LOG video LUT preview etc...), but you are lugging a lot of pricey gear just to see the lcd better. You might consider a sunhood option for your Z9. It will be a lot cheaper, and less finicky than setting up an external monitor all the time.

I am not used to 2 rings on lenses, nor have I had a lens with display readout before, hence these basic questions.
Current setting: the focus ring (FR in short, the wider one) changes focus distance, the control ring (CR in short, the narrower one) changes aperture (default setting).
Q1) When I rotate the CR, it changes the aperture (f-num) as expected. When the display readout on the lens is showing focus distance (0.29m to inf), when I rotate the CR, the depth of field marker in the readout narrows or widens. This is just changing the aperture (f-num), basically the same thing, right? I do understand the relation between f-num and dof.
Q2) When I rotate the FR, it changes the focus distance as expected. When the display readout is showing magnification (1: 1 to 100+), it is essentially doing the exact same thing, i.e. changing focal distance, right? Nothing else fancy happening inside, right?
Sorry, but it just looks like duplicate information to me in some gimmicky display, and it confuses me utterly. But I may be wrong...
The display on the lens is correct in the way it shows you the changing of the DOF. DOF changes when the subject distance changes (you focus closer or further away), and it is also changed by the changes in aperture. Focusing closer makes a bigger change in DOF than changing the aperture with unchanged focus distance but both actions change the DOF.
@@JournEpic-Photography Yes, that answers Q2, you are right! I forgot the relation between focus distance and DOF. The DOF marker changes by varying both FR and CR. Thanks for clarifying!
On a side note, I have just set my foot into macro photography, and it's not easy! But I think it gives an opportunity to discover new things around me, and relax my mind.
