Why Tim Hortons Struggles In The United States
I went to Tim hortons in Madrid Spain, and everyone in there was Canadian tourists
LittleMouse oh man that’s awesome! My friend is currently in Spain, I will let him know to visit that Tim Hortons
In Málaga (Southern Spain) there must be 3 o 4 Starbuck's. 3,5 or 4 euros for a white coffee 'cause your name is written on the carton? These new Roman-Americans must be fool...
😂
LittleMouse a Canadian women sh!t in the middle of the floor of a Tim Hortons in Canada and threw it at employees because the service was so bad. Tim Hortons are horrible at best
Fine Supplements I hope she didn’t have the Timmies Runs. That would have been messy.
Too much competition in the US and people are not willing to change their habits and try something else... there, saved you 7 minutes.
thanks
Thanks boss
Way to be inspired by my comment on Buttigieg😆
don't forget residents in non-hockey cities and areas saying 'Tim Who?'
i just like hearing the explanatory, soft yet professional voice
I haven’t seen a single Tim Horton’s commercial in the US so maybe thats part of the reason why.
That's what I was thinking. Most fast food joints that do well advertise the heck out of their stores. Since so many places sell coffee and donuts, you need to make people thinking about your establishment nonstop.
I’ve only saw a Tim Hortons add about 5 times in my life and I live in Canada
Living in Maine, I see a lot.
Tim Horton's started going down when it was sold to an American company.
I live in meteo Detroit and I see about one every week and i dont watch tv that much
As a Canadian, I have found that the quality of their service and products to have been in decline for years.
I live in a state next to Canada and this is the first time i heard of Tim Hortons. I had no idea what they sold.
It's actually sad how terrible it is now
It's always been bad. US 🍩 s are better.
Their coffee takes like water !!! So trash and that's why it's so cheap
their coffee is def ass, but ice capps are still flames
I live in Canada and grew up with Tim Hortons. Most Canadians will agree that the overall quality has suffered greatly in the last decade; and even more since Restaurant brands bought them. They are living on good will, and that wont last forever. This also explains why they struggle so much in the US. They simply don't have those decades of goodwill built up like they do here in Canada. There's no nostalgia factor for locations outside of Canada...unless it's in a location with a lot of Canadians. They used to bake doughnuts in-house, but now have everything shipped in...they changed their coffee blend a few years back, and not for the better. They used to be really good at coffee & doughnuts, and then the menu exploded with a bunch of low quality sandwiches, potato wedges, etc, and the company lost focus. Now it's just "meh" coffee and "meh" food.
I prefer McDonalds in basically every way
That’s the Restaurant Brands effect. Did the same thing with Burger King and Kraft. Anything to cut costs. Also RBI isn’t American or Canadian-owned. They don’t care about preserving the nationalistic feel of the brands
Good point. I've seen many instances where a company has suffered after being bought or "merging".
Sounds like what I would say about Dunkin Donuts these days too. Just meh all around.
Yes, potato wedges are gross. The chicken strips are super greasy. I used to get the chicken salad on a croissant with Swiss cheese, not a menu item anymore. Oh well, at least Ice Caps are good.
I will tell you this, in Buffalo NY Tim Hortons is our major coffee chain. Tim’s forced Dunkin out of the region
Nathan G.C you’re definitely right I don’t even know my closest DD and I remember one closed here (buffalo area) maybe 1-2 years ago (I think it was in Cheektowaga and now it’s a Popeye’s)
True. When my friends from downstate at UB had never heard of Tim Hortons I was shocked. I've never even been to a Dunkin Donuts in my life.
You really be to be close to the border
@@robertetzenhouser I'm just down the road from one TIm Horton location, and about a mile from two others around the corner(one of them's a mini-Tim Horton inside of a supermarket). We had a Dunkin Donuts, but it closed and is now a cell-phone shop.
At my work, we have a Tim Horton's on-site, but there's a Dunkin Donuts on the other end of the roadway; apparently(whether because of my work or because of UB), a lot of folks from the NY/NJ/Philly area make the Buffalo area their home.
Nathan G.C Yes the border is like a 10 minute drive
They should be serving Tim Hortons coffee in U.S. Burger Kings in order to get brand recognition.
Burger King coffee is much better

They should try opening stores in small towns in the USA that doesn’t have Starbucks.
Exactly, you got that right, but it seems stores only open in places where there is already a glut of similar stores. And then they wonder why they can't do well? most franchises will not open in towns under 3,000. And there are tens of thousand of towns that such a store would do just fine in, but most corporations never deal in reality, and will continue to flood markets and do poor business it seems.
In the buffalo ny area, Tim Horton’s is WAY more popular then dunkin
I think every town has at least one Starbucks or if not there is one on the interstate inside the Walmart super center just outside town. I swear they put something in their coffee to make people believe it is the best and only choice. Since starting to buy it directly from the store I have been unable to really enjoy other coffees without making it was strong and adding more creamer and sugar.
heyyyitscayla fr I was like how? Everyone here gets Tim’s
Those are folgers places. Those people don't have spare cash to waste on buying coffee at a coffee shop, they'd make some sort of instant coffee at home
Why doesn’t Burger King just include Tim Hortons in their Restaurants just like McDonalds McCafe? That way Tim would gain access to a very benefitial starting point.
Max Schuck actually a wicked idea bever thought of that
Honestly this is a ingenious and brilliant idea
Awesome I’m going to email Tim Horton ceo
When Wendy’s was owned by them, that what they did. There was Tim Hortons and Wendy’s stores together. I know there is one in Grand Island, Ny.
who goes to burger king for coffee though
Start small. Go to malls and Colleges, Airports. Thats what Chick Fil a did. Now look at them.
1978 32 Its Only Common sense
Service areas too along I-90 Boston Massachusetts to Chicago Illinois
Malls, colleges, and airports? I would not say that is starting small. In fact, it's just the opposite. Amongst the rental prices for retail spaces, I would imagine that malls, colleges, and airports are amongst the highest in rental prices.
malls? what decade is this? If you would open your stores in a mall, why not open stores drive-ins? or sock-hops? or perhaps mausoleums
Malls are dead, Tim Hortons would die a slow painful death if they were placed in a food court.
I now live in the US in Ohio. I have been to Tim Hortons multiple times here. What really hurts them here is the the experience is not the same as at home. Very slow and poor customer service. The people working at the locations are not trained properly. Inconsistent quality as well.
coolkanadian They need to take on Chick-fil-a training?
The biggest difference is speed. Timmies in Canada may be a shadow of it's former self in terms of quality, but it's FAST. They have a dozen people working in an assembly line so as soon as you have finished paying, your drink and food is ready.
All of the US timmies I've been to are painfully slow, they have 2 or 3 people working and nobody is in a hurry. I don't drink Tims coffee because it's good, I drink it because it's familiar and because it's the fastest drive through around. Take away the speed and I'm going to Starbucks or Dunkin
Jennifer Little Right!! Or maybe bring each store manager up to a flagship store in Toronto to let them work and see how it is done! It would fix a lot!!
@@sammakov6312 so pretty much the same reason why Target failed in Canada.
Completely agree coolkanadian. I went to Canada in summer of 2018 with my best friend and I loved the experience at Tim Hortons, I'm neither a donut or coffee person, but they're lunch options were great! I loved the chicken salad sandwich especially. The stores were very clean in Canada and the people were really nice. We ate at 9 different Tim Hortons over the 7 days we traveled across Canada, we were trying to make it a game to see how many different ones we could eat at. I've had Tim's in both Ohio and New York and it was not as good. They didn't even have my favorite thing, the Chicken Salad sandwich 😠. Also not as clean and not as nice and quirky as in Canada. Hopefully it'll do better in the future.
As a truck driver I used to travel to Canada frequently and I loved Tim Horton's. When I went to ones in the US I was disappointed because they didn't carry my favorite menu items from the Canadian stores.
What are those items?
@@wurdofwizdumb1928 Two that come to mind were maple donuts and the extreme Italian sandwich. I know maple is very Canadian, but it's popular in the US, too. There was a type of Italian sandwich in the US, but it wasn't the same. Different bread, sauce, etc.
The boys are not giving Timmie's a chance eh?
They will never know what they are missing out on, truly heartbreaking.
Spjuthinator NELK
If Tim’s sponsored them they could turn Tim’s into Starbucks for the boys.
As a Michigander I love Timmies
Nelk would not approve of this 😔
It’s funny because here in Michigan there are a million Tim Horton’s and barely any dunk-ins. Tim’s is so much better
Agreed, in Michigan.
Eh, they used to be good. The 3 around me have been horrible. I’ve had to doctor more in the past 2 years, than any other coffee place. The only reason I even go is because there’s one right down the street from me.
UA-cam lover 1 Dunkin’ has some good sandwiches, but the drinks are lacking. Tim Hortons has better doughnuts and drinks, but not as many good drinks as Starbucks.
I think dunkin has better doughnuts but even the few left in montreal have changed their doughnut recipes for many selections. As for tim hortons its just bad all the way around now and yes, that coffee is as mediocre as mediocre gets. Mcdonalds has perfect coffee if you ask me, not that im lauding mcdonalds
Yo I'm jealous, I live in Vegas and there's literally no Tim Hortons but there's a million Dunkin's
They definitely haven't struggled in Buffalo
They don’t struggle in Rochester either.
My town has a Burger King, Tim Hortons and a Dunkin' all right next to one another. In the morning the BK and Dunkin' parking lots often have about 3 cars each, while the Tim Hortons parking lot is usually packed to capacity. No problem here.

There's 2 in Ashland Kentucky and they both seem to do pretty well, have both been there for quite a long time
I live in Hamilton Ontario, where Tim's started. On most main roads in our city, you can literally stand at one Tim Horton's, look down the street and see the next one. And they all make money. I've only ever known two Tim's in this city. One just moved to a newly built building across the street. The other closed because it didn't have a drive through... so it re-opened a couple of blocks down. 😂
I moved here a year ago after a decade in Toronto, the number of Tims locations stunned me! Surprised to learn they all make money money, those margins must be good on that medium double double!
Moved to The Hammer in 2016 and was flabbergasted at the number of Tim's in the city, yet only like three Starbucks. They are mostly filled with Boomers and Xers holding onto a bygone era and propping the failing brand up. 🤦♂️
Luckily Hamilton also has a healthy number of independent coffee shops and roasters with great coffee and baked goods. Donut Monster rocks as does Relay Coffee. 👌
Mulberry and Steeltown Garage are great as well.
Can confirm, in Fort Erie on highway 3 you can see the next tim hortons from the each tim hortons you come across
LOL someone park a Horse at Central County Tim Hortons, and is okay to Ride a Horse for Drive thur. Only in Hamilton County.

And both of them will be busy.
I've seen a tims, same parking lot a gas station. and that gas station has a tims inside of it.
That’s so they get the traffic going north while the one across the street from it gets the customers going south on their commute
Canadians love their timmys, got like 3 tim hortons with in walking distance near where i live.

Too bad Tim Hortons quality has been falling ever since they got bought out. They were the best before 2014

Is buffalo and WNY the best example for successful Tim Hortons franchising/expansion. Prob the one US that holds the strongest bond with the brand
John Warthling yeah there’s a ton here one every 4 miles or so
Yeah in Buffalo Tim’s is way more popular than Dunkin or Starbucks
WNYer here. I have 4 Tim Hortons within a mile of me. I have to get in a car and drive to Starbucks, and the only Dunkin is a crap location in a gas station.
They're very successful in Michigan as well, particularly in Southeast Michigan/Central Michigan.

We had a Tim Horton’s in Indianapolis earlier this year. They built it from the ground up and it was probably open for less than two weeks and then it was closed. It was so strange to see this newly built building and drive through empty. I’d never seen a business come and go so fast! I never even had a chance to try them but knew they had a few in Michigan. Ours news just said they left due to contract disagreements. A few months ago the building was made into a discount tire store. Interesting to see this story.

Found another local! Yeah I can agree 100%. People do, quite literally, obsess over it. Everyone at my school did (was it hard to guess there was a Tim Hortons right next door?) And now my mom is (addicted to their Oreo donuts). Can't comment much on the food as I haven't tried much of it though tbh.
Devon Rusinek bro it’s like that in Canada too dont worry
Timmies is a good mix of value, quality, and speed. At least in Canada every Timmies I've been through has beaten other chains on time. I can expect a full lineup to be handled in about 5 minutes while others may be close to 10. If you're a contractor this matters! Tim's quality has gone down but they are cheap and fast. I'd say they look worse now due to McD's quality going up by a significant amount over the last 10 years. McD used to be the worst fast food IMO and now they seem like one of the best.
I still prefer tims over dunkin, no one in buffalo goes to dunkin

Yep, DD has mostly left the area because they can't compete with tims.
From a Canadian, Tim Hortons isn't even that good anymore. I could swear that they were way better back in the day, but their downturn in quality seems to coincide when they were bought out. The donuts are now more stale, the chocolate icing on them is so watered down that it literally drips like water when in slightly warm weather, there's barely any icing to begin with on them, and the soups are _way_ oversalted (for preservation during shipment, maybe?)
I remember when I loved getting Timmies donuts, they were the best, and the icing used to be more generous, but me and my family noticed a definite drop in quality in the past decade.
I'm not a coffee drinker so I've never had the coffee, but from what my friends and family tell me, Tim Hortons coffee frequently tastes burnt now, so they stopped going. Used to be their number one stop.

No, they should start selling FRESH donuts, made IN-STORE in actual fryers. If you wanna be a donut shop, you gotta start with actual donuts, not reheated frozen leftovers.
Tim’s is SO popular in Northern Maine, in every town. It helps they’re open 24/7 in some locations, since there’s not much to do anyways. 😅 helps we’re closer to the border
Tim Hortons: Let's try the US Market
Starbucks: Hold my Coffee ☕☕☕
I use to work at Tim hortons as a teenager. The quality of coffee declined 20 yrs ago and hasn’t reached quality level since
You guys obviously haven’t been to WNY. There’s a Timmies on damn near every street corner. Lol
I live in Saginaw, Michigan and there’s more Tim Hortons in my town than Starbucks and Dunkin’s combined
Aden Gohm yeah I think because we are so close to Canada, I live in Wyandotte so it’s literally right accross the water, there are about 12 in about a 10 mile radius.
I live about 35 miles south of saginaw and we have tim hortons and no Star bucks
“It’s over polite”
Me, a Canadian: what? Where what? Excuse me? Have you been to Toronto?!
Dopeymeme honestly don’t know who made that stereotype, but i mean I’ll take it lol
Well since last few years it's losing in Canada too... it's not the same as it used to be
False, the first Tim Horton’s was a burger restaurant in North Bay Ontario before it started selling coffee and donuts
Raptors Fan19 wrong, it’s Hamilton Ontario in Ottawa st. Get good dummy
We have a tim hortons on every bloke in Buffalo NY
No the quality of Starbucks is wayyy better in the US, and the quality of Tim Hortons is wayyy better in Canada. I tried both in both countries multiple times.
I love Tim Hortons, it's where I go to get my coffee when I do decide to buy coffee
It's cheaper and better than Dunkin Donuts
First thing I do when I’m in Canada is go to Timmy’s
Same
timmies needs to fix their coffee, it sucks at the moment.
DigitalYojimbo agreed! And it used to be the best.
YES!
@@_bc0297 mcdicks is so much better.
It always sucked
DigitalYojimbo what are u on bro mcdicks coffee tates like burned asphalt
I’m Canadian. It’s average tasting coffee and you need to tell the server how many creams you want. The donuts can are smallish and really sweet, the soups and other foods come a food service company.
Ideally you want your drink from Starbucks and your donut from Tim Hortons. Well worth the two stops.
Coffee from a local roaster and donuts from local shops are better.
wft I'm not going into two different stores to pick two things that are commonly enjoyed together.
Starbucks sucks if you want a normal cup of coffee. Dunkin or even McDonalds kills Starbucks in terms of straight coffee.
Tim Hortons is also shockingly mediocre. Maybe that's why?
ro pro Tim Hortan is amazing and a national treasure for us Canadians
ro pro you're being nice.
Tim has the best coffee and cold drinks.
No it’s not.
totally agree. It's like a knock off Dunkin (Donuts) with coffee that can't be only coffee and water (there has to be something in it like chicory or some flavor filler), donuts made of spun sugar and air, and knock off breakfast sandwiches that are greasy and taste like fake egg.
So if Tim Horton’s represents the Canadian stereotype of hockey, why didn’t they open some stores in Minnesota, the state of hockey
They did about 2 years ago. Living in the Minneapolis area I seen approximately 6 open. 2019 they are all closed now.
captain ahab your reply shows no relevance to the reply you commented to, unless I'm missing something
They tried opening one in International Falls, which has very little to offer for food and drink and it closed. Why? Because Timmie's is garbage.
I love Timmy Ho’s. Not struggling in Michigan. Always has a long line in drive thru!
I've been to the Tim Hortons in Penn Station. The donuts are good
Avery the Cuban-American Are there any donuts you don’t like, fatass?
There's one in midtown too
White Mail Privilege I’m not even close to that, way off with my weight. Triggered much? I’m skinny, not all Americans are like the stereotypes. You act like I eat all donuts which I don’t
White Mail Privilege Found the triggered Canadian bacon
Krispy Kreme is a better option at Penn Station.
When I came across a Tim Hortons in the Toronto airport after a horrendous overnight flight it was like manna from heaven
I’m not gonna lie, they are most certainly not
struggling in Western New York, there is a Tim Hortons on like every corner here. And I can certainly say, it is better than Starbucks
Perhaps as long as you're drinking a straight coffee. I don't recommend screwing with the espresso drinks, it is clearly not a thing.
@@parasitius They don't do fancy coffees well, other than iced capps. I do get them to add a shot of espresso to my regular coffee once in a while.
Thank you, donut is so good
Speaking as a Canadian, I feel their analysis was good except they also should realize the big appeal of Tim’s is its mitigating effects during our long winters. Nothing like a double double in -10C weather - the coffee isn’t the best, but it’s a cheap hand warmer i buy when walking through the city.
That wouldn't surprise me. My city should be proud to have these stores, my dad goes to them a lot! (Toledo, OH).
I confess to using a large blacck coffee from Tim's to thaw out the frozen door lock on my Ford Escape. Toss and then turn the key...worked great.
Tim Hortons is sooo much nicer than Starbucks and Dunkin donuts #facts
Carmen M I like their doughnuts, but I far prefer Starbucks’ drinks: they have cold juice-type drinks with fruits, cold brews, frappes, etc.
timmy coffee is pretty bad
AQGOAT24 nope. Starbucks is incredibly sugary and overpriced
Vince Lestrade tim hortons does all those
@@jellypanda1035 Starbucks is only surgary if you order sugary drinks or add sugar to your coffee.
Hockey and tim hortons are compatible- both also very popular in buffalo
Aaron Fleshler I thought it was hockey and beer
Aaron Fleshler buffalo native... and Tim hortons is still trash. But it fits the area and lifestyle well
Pat Wym the food is good
It bothers me that the narrator and several of the people interviewed cannot pronounce Horton’s. It’s HorTon’s not Horrin’s.
Tim Horton's Should Do Business With Australia , And New Zealand. And The U.K. Less Business With The States And More With The British Commonwealth. Canada Needs To Join The CANZUK Union. The Soon Canada Joins The CANZUK Union So Much The Better.. Less Trade With The USA..
As much as I agree with your sentiment RBI is majority-owned by the Brazilian investment company 3G Capital, so isn't fully Canadian company any longer.
Tim Horton: Canada's most famous drunk driver.
LMAO
Stupid
I live in western NY and tims is everywhere and there are barely any starbucks or Dunkin near me... I work at a tim hortons and my entier family personally prefer Tim hortons over anything else
Best coffee is what you brew fresh right at home, Starbucks ,Dunkin ect are overpriced and overrated.
yep buying fresh beans & home brewing is the best, but i cant make doughnuts
@@chadsimmons6347 That's ok neither can Dunkin Donuts there was a time when you could get fresh donuts with real bakers now they are just crappy fast food! Cooked in microwave ovens.
@@improperbostonian6722 Lamars sells very good doughnuts you see people lined up outside in the rain, no waiting at empty Dunkin ( lol )
I don’t get regular coffee at Starbucks - that one can brew at home quite easily; however, I do like their nitrogen-infused cold brews, fruit drinks, and Frappuccino’s. Sure, someone who drinks one of those everyday may be able to justify a large (time/money) investment to make it for themselves, but for an occasional drink Starbucks is splendid. Plus the environment of the place is far better than a house for my tastes.
True what's the difference
Starbucks dominates west coast Canada. There wasn't even a Tim's in Vancouver until about the year 2000.
hm, is that so? I lived in Van mid 2000s and there were several that I can think of offhand as well as several in RIchmond and Burnaby. They must have made a sudden push at the turn of the century to have all those there by that time.
Tim’s US locations map looks like that of Panera’s in Canada.
I had many around my area but they closed. I remember getting the Glazed Cherry Timbits.
Meanwhile stsrbuck in toronto closing up nd turned into pot stores
Geez lady. It's Tim HORTONS. Not Tim Hor'ons.
Starbucks, dominoes, taco bells are nothing compared to 'Los pollos hermanos'.
v p their crack chicken is to die for.
Nothing like crystals to give your coffee that extra zing
Because we got Starbucks. Canada will do Canada and America will do America.
We have Starbucks and Dunkin' too. Just not as many. And Tim's costs less.
Starbucks is much more expensive though. We have it in Canada and the same size coffee can cost 3x more than at Tim's
@Dennis Xu
Curious, if both sold coffee for the same price, which would you prefer?
And Minnesota has caribou coffee
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
So I guess WNY is the exception. Because they're everywhere.
nick Betroski exactly
tim horton lived in buffalo when he played for the buffalo sabers
he died driving back to buffalo after a game with the leafs
the restaurants are successful everywhere people remember tim
The Tim Hortons from 2005 or so would have done well in USA
it failed. they expanded too quickly. i enjoyed it while it lasted. unfortunately, it sounds like RBI has completely destroyed the brand.
I would go to a Tim hortons if there was one near me here in Texas
Tim Horton's tastes gross.
@@SpriteZero Are you American or Canadian? In Canada it tastes very nice, while in America, not so much.
@@windturbine6796 I live in Canada.
@@SpriteZero I live in America
This is all pointless. Tim's is Brazilian owned!
Come to Panama especially where the canal is. It’s a huge place for tourists and have something like Tim Hortons can help. Starbucks and dunking aren’t really big here, unlike in the U.S
Their coffee quality has gone down! Through the years I’ve noticed that donut and other portions have become smaller and their coffee just doesn’t taste the same. I now don’t drink their coffee, prefer McDonalds coffee, it tastes better.
Because McDonald's scooped up their old supplier. Timmies is toilet water now.
And their service and standards....
....abysmal.
Not in Buffalo, they’ve conquered this city. Practically on every street corner
I live in a city with less then 100,000 people and my city has 15 dunkin donuts, 40 if you count the border cities and I dont even go there
@@fightttttt is dunkin donuts good? I dont have one near me
I went to a Tim's in Maine and it was crazy busy
Yeah, a Canadian company.
Not anymore since a long time. They are now part of a brazilian company.
How?
I live in Minnesota and I've never heard of Tim Hortons
There is one in Mall of America but I'm surprised there isn't else where aroud the twin cities and in North Dakota where lots of Winnipegers go all the time.
They closed
