Also on the 'out of the comfort zone' stuff, Face in the Sand is the only song where Nicko McBrain uses double-kick pedal (he said it's the hardest thing he's ever done).

Damn dude let me spill some praise. Where some guitar UA-camrs are too goofy or bland for my taste, you portray a wonderful mix of humour and information as well as talent. Like wtf you're incredibly skilled and inspiring whether it's an awesome cover of the whole rust in peace album (which is my all time favourite as well; can't fucking wait to perfectly nail lucratia, tornado of souls and hangar 18) and a great tribute to the wild child, delightfully amazing shorts or a fockin' 3 hour LotR epic. You're like the shredding big brother I never had and if I were to make it in any way as a guitarist, it would me jarring to have a collab with you. Keep it going man, I hope your channel and work in general keep on growing a humongous fanbase!

To update my list... these are the albums I would consider my top because they just stick to me. There are many great or even on par but for some reason, those are not what I am inclined to put on and don't generally get me going as much.
    1) Follow the Reaper - Children of Bodom: The funny thing about this is it took a long while for me to get this album, it was my 5th favorite. That's when I realized this is more like a flowing instrumental album. The sound is bright and crunchy. Alexi Laiho's ability to have this kind of... positive neoclassical and punkish sound but still underlying a kind of darkness of a black metal is really hard to describe but its so iconic and unique and I think this album definitely shows his complete mastery of manipulating these elements.
    2) The Path of Apotheosis - Inferi: Never have I heard an album that constantly pushes you into the next song while keeping up all the energy this packs. This is a tech death record with highly iconic melodic parts, but what really makes it work is the guitar interactions and dynamics with the vocals. It is this velocity filled momentum and its dynamics that always keep this offering something new.
    3) Episode - Stratovarius: Stratovarius really injected the shreddy speed in power metal, just compare to Helloween. This particularly is an example of just doing all the fundamentals well. Great songwriting, iconic parts that stick out, and lots of variation that flows great together. There is this kind of crunchy and nostalgiac sound to it that just feels really memorable. For that reason, it feels so right for my kind of power metal and I repeatedly put it on.
    4) Hatebreeder - Children of Bodom. This was my number one for a long time but I found I haven't listened to it as much but that is probably because I have just done so many plays on this. In a way, it feels simpler but the melodies are more iconic, and it's the real genius of songwriting you get this feeling of 'light in the darkness' that gives it a timeless feel. I think the sound is a bit more 'soft' to my ears and that has to do with it.
    5) Character - Dark Tranquility: Dark Tranquility I used to view as a kind of mid band but they grew, and grew, and grew until they are my top 4 band. What makes them really work is they are able to convey a kind of 'sentiment' through 'padded melody' in the leads or subtle synths, but they use these cutting kind of riffs. There is such a unique 'gritty yet cutting' sound that just adds so much oomph. The drums have this kind of snap quality, and the vocals stick out among the frey.
    6) Diluvium - Obscura: There is such a crystal clear, technically precise sound to this and I do really mean clear. Lots of techdeath sounds like a bombardment but this is so clear yet detailed in the arrangement. The tone of the instruments is not very harsh, they give it this solid feel that fit together. This conveys the darker atmosphere but it also makes you focus on the arrangement which is always genius and just seems to always tell a story that sticks out.
    7) Nocturnal - The Black Dahlia Murder: No other band I've seen has so clearly painted sceneries in their music. Their melodies are on part, black metal tinged but with these extremely fitting, impactful rhythms playing with it, songwriting is incredible. The vocals are highly unique with somewhere between a black metal screech and a growl, and there is such a focus on the lyrics. There is also such a level of technicality between intense blast beating and neoclassical-ish but it never overstays it welcomes, it all is so well developed.
    8) Among the Living - Anthrax: The best thrash metal ever. Sure, Megadeth surely has some of the best guitar playing which I love too, but in terms of raw, thrashing riffs with tight songwriting that keeps you going, Anthrax has been severely, severely under-rated. I am not normally a thrash fan because I usually find the riffs too chuggy and repetitive. Anthrax shows how its done here. I think a big part has to do with the space they give it, and how much weight the rhythm guitar is given.
    9) (grey album with long japanese name) by Imperial Circus Dead Decadence: Very early when I was discovering metal thanks to osu!, I found symphonic metal. I still don't think any other band has come close to understanding how to actually fuse metal with symphonic elements. There are some 4 vocals you can spot throughout alongside a powerful rhythm guitar, impressive leads, with well placed symphonic aspects and honestly it's mindblowing that something so bloody well arranged can not be as well known.
    10) V: The New Mythology Suite : Symphony X: The other 9 I feel have really been put on repeated plays and I have put this on in a while but... out of all of what I listened to before, it still has a place in my heart and I feel I'll revisit. It's hard because if you skip to any part of a song, it doesn't feel memorable, but it's this kind of desert atmosphere and production that just makes it something, I don't know.
    11) The Sound of Perseverance - Death: Because I feel it is cheating putting Children of Bodom twice, I will include this. Death may be seen as the inventor of death metal but that's hardly justice. They pushed the technical and melodic side and 'broke' the death metal sound. Chuck Schuldiner's sound is just so much more melodic, emotional, story telling, and even beautiful. It is by some mystery this isn't higher but for some reason it has taken a while for me for Death to stick. Anyway, The Sound of Perseverance puts this best on display. The arrangement is technical but again, meaningful.

Have to agree with Rust in Peace. Funny you mention getting Hanger 18 from a mag in 2003. I remember getting an abridged version from Kerrang or Metal Hammer back in the 80s and thinking _Fuck I’ve got to learn that!_ I failed miserably.
Fast forward 25 years and I’m teaching my son everything I know about guitar, which takes all of an afternoon, and he asks me if I’ve ever heard of a song called Hanger 18. He loves it; practices it; and thankfully doesn’t take after his father when it comes to playing guitar. Rust in Peace was his gateway to metal, and now to wider musical production. It truly is a multi-generational influencing album.

Same here... bought RTL in '85 when no one had really heard of them in the UK on the basis of hearing Creeping Death on the Tommy Vance show. I had to include it in my list because of how it blew me away! JFA might be my favourite, but for me it's hard to choose between those two and you can also chuck MOP into the mix.

How strange to see how important that question is for all of us. Opinions are really interesting!
I'm really surprise not to see any A7X album here!!!
I have to admit that it's been a few days I'm thinking about that question, and it's really hard to answer. And impossible to give an order!
    But there I am :
    -Appetite for Destruction (G'n R)
    -Nightmare (Avenged Sevenfold)
    -Rust in Peace (Megadeth)
    -Symbolic (Death)
    -Avenged Sevenfold (Avenged Sevefold)
-Use your Illusion (both, but mostly the first but WHO can deny that Estranged is the best song ever written?))
    -Master of Puppets (Metallica)
-On va Tous Crever (Sidilarsen, french band!!!)
    - Ennemis , No One is Innocent (other french band).

@@christopherhowes987 It's definitely their most enjoyable. StST, I mean, it's cool, but it's ass compared to everything else they've made. Still better than a lot of metalcore I've heard though, so props there. Waking the Fallen...well, let's be totally honest, it's a timeless metalcore album and is up there with the greats like All That Remains' Fall of Ideals. Maybe not as widely loved/appealing, but it's up there. I love it. City of Evil was just insanity. Third album from a relatively new band, pulling off shit basically no other band could at the time. The absolute skill of everyone in CoE, top-notch (I mean Matt hit an F1 in one passage of Betrayed and an A5 in the backing of the intro to Beast and the Harlot. Burn it Down had insane drumming. M.I.A was guitar nerd paradise.) IMO their prime before The Stage, maybe just period. Self-Titled, super varied, has a song for anyone, nothing more that has to be said there. Nightmare, very emotional, amazing album, but not their best work MUSICALLY. However, it was an incredibly emotional hard-hitter and it certainly deserves points for that. Hail to the King, cool, still A7X, but not my favourite at all. And The Stage...oh boy. Basically if Dream Theater (in their prime) decided to stop being show-offs and actually wrote some consistent, sensical prog. Like Opeth's prime.

    10: Nocturnus - Thresholds
    9: Atheist - Unquestionable Presence
    8: Forbidden - Forbidden Evil
    7: Flotsam & Jetsam - Cuatro
    6: Queensryche - Operation: MindCrime
5: Pantera - Cowboys from Hell
4: Slayer - Seasons in the Abyss
3: Megadeth - Rust in Peace
2: Metallica - Master of Puppets
    1: Helsar - Nosferatu
