    TIG brazing looks like a really useful method of joining things. My question is, does it need an advanced TIG welder with HF start with all the functions I don't understand what they are for (pulsing and slope and perhaps more)? Or can you TIG braze using a simpler stick/tig welder that uses lift-tig start?

    isnt pre heat required for welding cast to stop cracking from thetmal shock?

    • @michaelszczys8316
      @michaelszczys8316 Рік тому

      I think it's not as necessary if the cast itself is not ' melted '.
      It's the molten cast iron that contracts as it solidifies. That's why you ' peen ' it to hammer expand it as it is contracting.
      At least that's how I heard it explained.

  • @sjowe
    @sjowe 9 років тому +1

    Very nice video Jody, good arc-shots as always! One question though, how strong is a joint like this compared to a "normal" tig-weld on steel? Is it reasonable strong or will it break with a blow from a hammer? /Jonathan

    • @hotcomputer1
      @hotcomputer1 9 років тому +1

      He melts the Silicon Bronze filler rod around to make the two pieces "Stick" together. It's like a weld that doesn't mix with the base metal. The Silicon Bronze and the base metal he is welding on does not melt together like it would in a normal weld.

    • @weldingtipsandtricks
      @weldingtipsandtricks  9 років тому +6

      sjowe I will try to do some destructive tests to show strength in a future vid

    • @member5488
      @member5488 9 років тому

      I've used silicon bronze quite a bit to join sheet metal. It allows you to use less heat which can be valuable in sheet metal repair. When I first started I did a bunch of destructive testing on my joints so I'd be sure I was using good technique and to have confidence in my welds. I found that in lap and butt joints that when I was using good technique that the base metals would rip on one side of the bead. The welds also showed good malleability and crack resistance when worked, how ever, I can't help but imagine things would be different on metal of any weight much above 20 gauge, but I've never seen any reason braze heavier steels. Keep in mind that it many ways, bronze is every bit as strong as steel, and the only reason the "Iron Age" is an advancement over the "Bronze Age" is that iron was strong enough, and far cheaper and more plentiful than the metals needed to make bronze, making decent metal tools available to far more people. With an ultimate tensile of 85,000 psi and and a yield of 55,000 psi, silicon bronze is stronger than A36 structural steel.

    • @sjowe
      @sjowe 9 років тому +1

      member548 Thank you for the detailed answer to my question. I could guess, as you mention above, that this method works good on sheet metal. I do some bodywork on cars from time to time and will sure try this braze-method next time. As most welders know, the problem with thin sheet metal and welding is distortion. You want a completely airtight seal but at the same time keep down heat buildup. /J

The joints I'm asking about doing are the small 1/8 dia copper rod supports connecting to same dia copper track. Hope that's not confusing and Thanks for any help.

      MRrwmac At first I was thinking electrical wire. Now I get it. Good job with the word picture!
      You might investigate 5-15% Sil-Fos or even 5-15% silver solder with the corresponding flux.
      It looks a bit expensive at first look, but a little filler goes a long way, especially on 1/8" diameter materials. Look around on Amazon, MSC, Brownells or even eBay for good deals.
      With the correct flux, the low temp versions will usually flow without too much difficulty using an inexpensive handheld propane or MAPP gas torch.
      There is a UA-cam video called "Brazing Copper to Copper with Sil-Fos" that may give you some insight.
      Glad to be of any assistance. Good luck with your project!

      @MrSunrise-gm5ne 9 років тому +2

      Try silver solder. Get it from a jewelry supply store or on-line at Rio Grande. You need to use a flux - I like Dandix. I use a very small propane torch. Remember to heat the metal, not the solder. (Silver solder comes with different melting points - hard, medium, easy and very easy. This is for complex jewelry fabrications. For what you are doing, you should stick with hard or medium for strength.)

    I understand Harris has been fabricating motorcycle frames for 30 or more years for street and racing.They use a british high manganese T-45 aircraft tubing with a specific bronze welding rod with both having a tensile strength of 85,000 psi. They are welded using a a gas aircraft torch; one big advantage of this is much smaller chance of grain growth and stress, brazing at 1600 to 1800 degrees F compared to tig fusion welding at 2500 degrees and up particularly with chromoly which should never be brazed. Both T-45 and 4130 chromoly were designed during WWII for the same purpose: engine mounts for Fighter and Bomber aircraft. Tig welding wasn't perfected until after the war. For chromoly to achieve its maximum strength of over 100,000 psi it must be stress relieved and heat treated after welding. As a bladesmith well versed in forging, grain growth, normalizing and heat treat I think a lot of people tend to give the british practice of bronze welding short shrift. After all the Land speed record Car Thrust II was built of T-45.The only similar steel available in the US is Reynolds 631 a steel used in high end steel framed bicycles. I don't why a US steel maker doesn't make a US version of T-45 It's much more forgiving than Chromoly.

    why does that look so damn pretty? I wish those welds held up better than normal ones. But one weird question, could you do a tig weld, and then after go over with silicone bronze with a nice pattern without damaging or weaken the other weld underneath? Or am I stupid for asking? :)

    Where do you get the aluminum bronze? Everytime I ask about it I get a funny look.

      bikefreek you probably wont find it at a welding supply store. but I have ordered aluminum bronze a2 tig rod from Amazon

      bikefreek My Airgas store carries Harris Aluminum Bronze A2 rod 1/16, 3/32 & 1/8 in 10# boxes, pricey, but you can many times sweet talk them into selling smaller quantities by the pound.
      Online shopping (Amazon or others) may be easier and cheaper than getting some wholesalers to sell over the counter to you as a walkin consumer without an account or proof of business license and tax ID.

    is it possible to weld this metals with 6013 electrodes ?

      +toolman talal 6013 electrodes are for steel. They won't work very good on cast iron, your weld will crack

    How come the last one did not have the stack of dimes look like your practice shots? Was that due to the gas coverage as well?

    • @weldingtipsandtricks
      @weldingtipsandtricks  9 років тому +4

      IIIsticksone yep, I am pretty sure it was the cup along with using pulse. the small cup allows for quite a bit of oxidation and that also increases need for more amps to flow the puddle....once you get to a certain heat, ripples disappear. but good enough for a piggy bank and made my near empty tank of argon last longer.

      weldingtipsandtricks Thanks! I have had trouble getting the stack of dimes look with silcon bronze and this will hopefully help.

    I don't understand why you keep calling it welding Silicon Bronze, it's not because people call TIG brazing welding that it's welding! Regards, Matthew

      old habits....like saying TIG instead of GTAW

      Interesting, as a Brit, I've always said TIG. Having dabbled in welding and brazing for over forty years, it's always seemed essential to explain to people the difference between welding and brazing, I may be nit picking but it seems fundamental to me! Thank you for all that you've taught me my subscription to you channel has been extremely useful to me. Regards, Matthew
