  • Forty years ago, 11-million people from all over the world descended on Knoxville for one of the most popular expos America has ever put on. The 1982 World’s Fair put this scruffy city on the banks of the Tennessee River on the map and some people who attended during the expo’s six-month run never left.
With a growing population of just under 200-thousand, Knoxville is more popular than ever. People gravitate here for its natural beauty and some of the nicest, most hospitable folks you’ll find anywhere.
In this episode, we’re showing you 10 Things You Must Do in Knoxville from the perspective of a native East Tennessean. (That would be me!) Hope you enjoy my take on this special place.

I was born at Ft. Sanders Hospital in Knoxville in late August 1945. Later, my parents moved our family to Dandridge, where I started elementary school and my parents owned a restaurant and a hunting-fishing store in the brick building in the heart of downtown. Later, we moved back to Knoxville and I went to Knoxville East High School, graduated in 1964. In October 1964, we moved to Sarasota, Florida. I miss Knoxville and the hills and mountains, but still appreciate the Gulf Coast of Florida.

I went to the Worlds Fair in '82 and had a blast! I have 3 six packs of Worlds Fair beer (each one a different kind) that we found in my grandfather's garage when he passed. Nobody else wanted them because they think they aren't worth anything but to me they are. I was born here in St Mary's Hospital and still live here. My daughter goes to UT and we have always loved how beautiful it is here.

It was the biggest flop of any worlds fair and it hurt the city on a way it has never been able to overcome!
That’s when I moved out of Knoxville and will never ever move back!
The city allowed motels and landlords to raise the price of rent and or just kick people out , the traffic was terrible for two years and fact is during the fair the attendance was so low the traffic was worse during construction!
So no the worlds fair was not a good thing for Knoxville or surrounding area

Has anybody else ever wondered why the term "Middle Tennessee" is used by people in Tennessee instead of "Central Tennessee?" I do not know of any other state that uses the term "middle" rather than "central." I can only surmise that the term "middle" is used because of Middle Tennessee State University and the fact that the state is quite narrow. No, it is not really that important but it is interesting as each star of the Tennessee State Flag represents each of the state's three distinctive geographic regions.

Its a really nice city to live in, but its not much to balk at for travellers, unless youre in retirement age and enjoy the slower paced things, like live music performances from indie bands at bars, or historical properties which..arent that impressive.

Okay so I live in Knoxville Tennessee give us 10 free things we can do cuz we're always looking for something to do we're not a native of here I've lived here about 6 years and my fiance lived here about two but we cannot find stuff to do that's free and we are not a financially well off family that can just do a whole lot with some free stuff we can do here

We have a lot of lakes and quarry’s I would advise bull run for fishing and Norris dam for swimming right on the edge of oak ridge. Also I was born and raised here and my family more appreciated the pigeon forge area and the mountain reserves.

The Blue Plate Special concerts are free. Mighty Musical Monday concerts at the Tennessee Theater are free. Knoxville Art Museum is free. Most of the events downtown are free to attend. UT Gardens is free.

As someone who has lived in Knoxville their whole life. It's not that special. . tbh. Most people pass through to get to the smoky mountains or Florida

Damn...after more than 40 years, Knoxville is still talking about the Worlds Fair.
Knoxville unfortunately never used that event to promote other events though out the following years to keep the region even nationally recognized.
Other than a football game or 2 or the Woman's Basketball HoF, it's just a place to get something to eat while on your way somewhere else.

Nasty Tennessee river yuk! Expo been to long ago, downtown, watch out you'll be mugged in a new york minute , mostly homeless, and old people from another generation here most of those landmarks not worth the time to go to Knoxville is known to all the locals as malfunction junction, courthouse should have been moved west 50 years ago.

@@ThreeRunHomer Knoxville is not what it is cracked up to be, most of what I said is true to some extent so no most people just pass right on through Knoxville. The city literally tossed out the distance learning creator, now they regret it so bad due to the fact UTK is pretty much sitting empty, the online university has taken over.
