    The very name of the Opera: "Épiclèse", is French for Epiclesis which is a very important part of the Eucharist aka the Holy Mass. It is during this part, where the priest prays to the Holy Spirit to turn the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ, the Lamb of God, through whose shedding of his blood humanity's sins have been washed away. So Focalors' line "I suppose now you understand why your court is called Opera Epiclese" makes so much sense now.

    Immediately after the quest I made such a connection: Egeria - God the Father (creator), Focalors - Holy spirit (divinity), Furina - God the Son (human)

      Egeria has mote in common with eve, created by the heavens, the first mother, o herited the original sin to her children, focalors would be Mary, the holy mother that trought divine power would give birth to the savior (Furina)

    • @dougligaming

      Yes I found that aspects of the trinity were not isolated to one specific character. The only easy one is to say that Furina is Jesus. Focalors lack of physical form and link to the power of the hydro archon definitely implied a connection to the holy spirit. And while she was also the one to create Furina suggesting a connection to Mary or God the Father. She also said the famous phrase "be not afraid" to Furina. Putting Furina in the role of Mary in that moment. Even though in the rest she is very much Jesus.

    I love how at 5:50, Aether is beside a trident/pitchfork, and Furina beside a light and some fish. Very Satan/Jesus indeed. Also, Paimon is a demon very loyal to Lucifer, and Lucifer means 'lightbringer', of course! And the Traveler is literally a fallen angel/star (morning star?) They're Satan more often than just here :P

    I'm planning a speedpaint series. Many of my fellow Christians would quickly call Genshin Impact demonic, writing it off that way. But Genshin Impact brought me closer to God and Christianity. Nowadays many christians fear the devil more than they love God, and so they are looking for the devil in things rather than the God in things.
    Each of the Archons, in my eyes at least, relate back to God in some way... at least im my mind. Venti, god of freedom relates to the Christian God's desire for free will, and Venti has been very active, but because he wants to maintain free will, he acts in the background. Zhongli reminds my of God keeping his promises and covenants, never flooding the world again, promising to send his only son, leading Moses's people out of bondage; even the faked death of Morax reminds me of the shift from old to new Testament, how God acts with more subtlety. Ei is a perfect example of not easily understanding God's mind, no one understood why Ei revoked visions, but it was a conclusion she came to for her people.
    Nahida is a perfect example of God's love and capacity for love. Nahida did the most to protect and ensure the safety of her people despite heing imprisoned and not even being seen as abgod worth worship. Much like how God still loves his children and is always there to help as soon as you turn to him. And Focalor/Furina is peak Jesus; Focalor splitting her humanity and soul from her divinity, sacrificing herself, need I say more.
    Genshin Impact is an amazing game

      I am glad Genshin has helped you on your journey. It is true some Christians might see these references as coming from a harmful place. It's why I worried about offending both "sides" with this sort of video. Many do not want to be told when Christianity or any religion is in the media they enjoy. While others are offended the media would dare to reference "their" religion. If there is a wrong way to represent the stories in the Bible I do not believe Mihoyo is doing it.
      Genshin in my opinion is an attempt by a Chinese Creator to summarize as many cultural philosophies and beliefs as possible for an isolated chinese young adult demographic. To start conversation and intrigue about the world outside of China. In that context it is nice to see Christianity included. Christians should Want the Bible referenced in a game reaching millions of people, not just in China but across the Globe that have never had or bothered to have access to a bible.
      Another commenter mentioned it, but the 7 Archons can be lined up with the 7 spirits of god. Which are said to be 7 parts or aspects that come together to create the holy spirit. So not just the gnostic demons people usually point to. So you connecting each Archon to an Aspect of God is an accurate way to look at it.

    Some other things:
    1. The sign of Jonah with the Narwhal.
    2. Wriothesley's similarity to Joseph son of Jacob. He's like a mishmash of multiple characters. His fighting style is similar to Jacob's and of course his Noah's ark.
    3. The Harrowing of Hell would be paralleled with how Neuvillette and Traveler fight the Narwhal.
    4. Satan literally means Accuser. That was on point the Traveler in this case.
    I suppose most other things are covered really well by the video already. Great video!
    Really well done by Hoyo's writers!

      I'm 6 months late lmao but to add to 1), Childe is straight up Jonah; since he fell into the abyss and saw the whale, then emerged after 3 days. Also there's an achievement for killing the knight (which is implied to be a memory/remnant/phantom of childe) in the whale's mouth without getting hit by its phantoms that's straight up titled Three Days and Nights in the Belly of the Great Fish

    I think some of the references you draw are questionable but all in all I love how Hoyo intertwined all these topics into the quest. The fact that there are many references to christianity is undisputable, but so are references to French revolution and to game's own story. Hence the blade that killed Focalors is both a cross, a guillotine, and an Oceanid.
    And I'll be honest I love that Hoyo did it this way. Christianity is unseparable part of European history and culture and I think that despite some creative freedom they used to mix things up, they represented it very well in the story.

    • @dougligaming
      @dougligaming  7 місяців тому +22

      Yeah there are definitely some that are more clear cut than others. But I wanted to mention all the possible ones that I could for sure find sources for. I actually left out Jonah for this reason.
      I never studied the French Revolution and I personally banned myself from ever trying to pronounce french words I only ever read as text. So other than the obvious guillotine and Furina's love of cake. There wasn't anything I felt like I could bring to the table on that front.
      It is very true Christianity is heavily linked to European kingdoms post the Roman empire. I'm just happy to see Mihoyo was confident enough to include it in more than just the architecture. They could have just done the cross tombstones and left it there. But they worked it into the main story wonderfully.

      @@dougligamingThat's exactly why I, as a Christian, enjoyed it so much! Usually in fiction many biblical references are either taken out of context or just in very poor taste, it's one of the rare situations where I've seen an actually respectful reference that showed the writers understood the main messages of Christianity (about love and redemption) and implemented them in such as nice way - that's what makes this Archon Quest so amazing!!

Why Genshin was better was because 1) it was subtle about the reference (more in the names than in the obvious objects themselves) and 2) it understood the meaning of those objects or situations, and then proceeded to carry it over to the game - THAT is the important part, the message you carry together with the symbolism!

    Not biblically related but I also like to point out that Focalors specifically also has some connections with Marie Antoinette, and the sword above her represents the guillotine and how she died. Focalors removing her position as the Hydro Archon (and the seat with it) also parallels to MA being the last queen of France. Additionally, their hair, Focalors has longer, fuller hair and Furina (Ousia form) had short hair, prior to her execution, Marie's hair is cut short and in Furina's splash art, she is shown in her ousia form which is the short hair.

    Excellent work. Only someone with a great understanding of Christianity and Fontaine's Arcon Quest could see so many of these similarities. Some might object to the Father and Son being potrayed as females, but the parallels cannot be dismissed. The writers of Fontaine's Arcon Quest tapped into a timeless story of love, sacrifice, and salvation. There's a reason why millions of people around the world find hope in the overarching story of the Bible.

      Possibly! I'll admit I haven't done Wriothesley's Character quest and assumed it just hinted at the Noah narrative some more. But with how positively Mihoyo tries to spin Prison life I struggle to see it being meant to be a hell on earth. If that makes sense? Like it's definitely being cast down at god's judgement and the Captain in Neuvillette's character story could definitely be seen as the casting out of a fallen angel. But the prison itself doesn't feel like a hell. . . Tho the cylinder/ring design is sus now that I think about it. Like I know there aren't 7 rings or levels. But if there were. hmmm

    Excellent video! While I think some of these points could be debatable to some people, I think it's hard to argue that the overall theme of this archon quest wasn't going in this direction, especially with how much Hoyoverse regularly pulls from the Bible, Torah, and related religions, especially in Genshin.
    I'd also like to add that this "retelling" of Jesus' story had a lot of touches inspired by the more gnostic interpretations of this particular story especially in the relationship between Jesus & Judas.
    I'm glad you weren't put off from making this type of video given it's potentially touchy subject matter. Regardless of religious beliefs, I think it's cool to analyze and point out parallels between stories like this, especially ones that mean a lot both historically and to many people. Again, great video, I'd love to see more of these types of videos in the future!

      I've looked into Gnostism when it comes to the Archons, like most. But I admit I did not think to check it's version of the crucifixion. I was jumping between all four gospels when looking for verses. It made me assume they had watched an adaptation that used these references instead of actively pulling from all four versions. And I had simply never seen that adaptation. (I've never watched the Passion of the Christ) But I'll have to check the gnostic version. thank you!
      I will admit i was nervous and that is why the disclaimer is there. But I had hoped that if I respectfully provided all the information including the sources I pulled from I could avoid offending most people. And I'm happy to say it seems to have worked. With most of the comments being respectful discussion. Which is all I want. I love discussing world building and cultural references like these. Stories shouldn't be afraid to build from what came before and healthy analysis of those connections is just part of reading and interpreting literature.
      I miiiight me making a Nahida Christmas video in the coming weeks. We'll see if I can respectfully poke a sleeping bear twice lol.

    Very well put together! I grew up in a Christian school but don't remember a whole lot. I knew about the references in the Fontaine story but didn't realize how far it went!
    I was actually kind of surprised you didn't bring up how Neuvillette is probably supposed to be Leviathan, though I get how it didn't really fit with the theme of the rest of the video. Also how when Furina first meets "Mirror-me," Focalors introduces herself the way angels and God usually introduce themselves ("Be not nervous. Be not afraid. I am before you"). I thought those were super on the nose when it comes to Biblical references.
    Also, I was wondering if you have any insight to the connection I've heard about that Furina and Neuvillette have to the Whore of Babylon and the beast that always accompanies her. The connection being that the beast in the Bible is either the same thing/described the same way as Leviathan(?). Said beast would eventually betray the Whore of Babylon (like how Neuvillette sentenced Furina guilty).
    I thought it was kind of ironic given that Furina is our Jesus metaphor, but Genshin's never shied away from flip-flopping story lines. Revelation in general is really cool sounding and really confusing. The connection is a lot more vague because a lot of stuff I see conflicts or draws from different interpretations. I thought it was interesting and figured you might be able to untangle that a bit.
    I know that further Biblical references are in the Fontaine story, though they're kind of scattered everywhere, like the presence of a big whale that swallows you (Jonah (yeah it was technically a big fish but that's not stopping pop culture)). Pretty cool how dedicated they were with all this.

    • @dougligaming
      @dougligaming  7 місяців тому +1

      I honestly forgot the Leviathan one. I noticed it back in 3.8 that the hydro dragon was being linked to Leviathan, but we didn't even know who Neuvillette was at the time. And the Hydro dragon hasn't been called Leviathan since. I got distracted by Apep at the time lol
      The beast in Revelation being described like the Leviathan is because they are the closest references to dragons the bible has along with the Behemoth. Tho I swore when I was reading those passages the Revelations one was called the Red Dragon? I could be misremembering. Either way the "whore" of Babylon was supposed to be the nation itself and not one specific ruler. Babylon like Egypt was described with she/her pronouns in the bible. I can't say if Neuvillette being a dragon and being the one to betray Furina is intentionally connecting to these verses. As Mihoyo's references to Babylon have been firmly rooted in Sumeru lore.
      Revelation is something actual christian scholars have huge debates about. So I'm not surprised any intentional references to it are kept to the basic "end of the world". There is an achievement called "Do you believe in Rapture?" that came out with Fontaine in 4.0. But I only just obtained it and so didn't have footage or knowledge of it to include it in the video. If they do reference Revelation more I will not be surprised if it's during the battle against Celestia. So in link 2 more years I'll probably be making a video about that lol.
      I actually had a version of the outro that included Childe and the whale being a Jonah reference. But when looking back through the footage I realized he did not leap out from its mouth like I had originally assumed. He leaps out of the portal behind it. But because the portal and the whales mouth have a similar blue effect at a quick glance I assumed it had swallowed him for a second. The whale trying to eat Fontainian's felt like to quick of a thing compared to the entire Flood narrative to be worth mentioning without the Childe bit, so I cut it instead of rerecording it.

    With the release of this archon quest I had 2 observations that I loved in the first few weeks:
    1. People started debating on whether Focalors and Furina were the exact same or completely separate entities, and well, this had very "first 4 ecumenical councils" energy. As people started calling each other stupid, illiterate, I'm like, damn, so this was what sitting as a member of the councils felt like XD
    2. The large change of attitude by parts of community towards Furina, even among the strongest haters, really does have a Peter the Apostle and the start of the "Jesus cult" that would become Christianity XD
    I like how both made me feel like I saw some insight into historical mass conversion events.
    Damn Mihoyo, first the Sumeru Akademia being an Iranian theocracy allegory, now this, truly incredible.
    WTF will they be doing for Natlan?
    From the little info we've heard, are they doing the Aztec Flower Wars?
    Is an external force going to topple the battle dome?
    If they tackle the Spanish conquests, oh boy, I do not look forward to being on the internet.

    • @dougligaming
      @dougligaming  6 місяців тому +1

      Mihoyo kept it vague on if Furina is Gnostic Jesus or Bible Jesus. And that vagueness has led to fans recreating the 1st century theological debate around that very subject and I am living for it. If they keep at it I might have enough to write a dissertation on it lol
      All I know for Natlan is the Aztec version of a Dragon is terrifying and if that's how the Pyro dragon sovereign looks we are screwed. They also already did human sacrifices in Inazuma with Ruu. So they're going to have to come up with a new shock factor for Natlan.

    as a Catholic, I spotted a lot of these biblical references while playing through the quest and afterward and I'm glad someone has made a video about this! A thing I want to add: the story of Noah and the flood is a "type" (google's definition: a person, a thing, or an action, having its own independent and absolute existence, but at the same time intended by God to prefigure a future person, thing, or action) of baptism. So, it's quite appropriate to link Noah's story and the baptism of the people of Fontaine.
    On a bit of a side note, i think there's a note near the teleport at the tower in the new Fontaine area that mentions something about baptism...I don't quite remember tho...

    Great video! Interestingly, water can also be used to explain the Trinity. It can have the form of a gas, solid, or liquid, but it’s still water. In the same way, we have the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit - God in three persons. One flaw of this analogy is that water cannot exist in these three forms simultaneously, while that is true of the Trinity. He is God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit all at the same time.

      I've never made that water connection before, but true! It's unfortunate gas (Anemo) and solid (Cryo) are already other elements in the game. Very nice video, many details and precise citations de the Bible - it's extremely professional! I'm currently trying to write a post on my personal blog about the subject, and I have an alternative take on Focalors being God the Father vs Furina being the Christ. Actually, when meeting Neuvillette, Focalors insists a lot on having "separated her divinity (Focalors) from her humanity (Furina)" so if we were trying to for dogmatic comparisons, actually it's really the non-split Focalors who is like the Christ, as He contains both divine and human nature in one body (cf. A lot of heresy discussions in early christiniaty), so basically Furina and Focalors are Jesus only together. But obviously from the thematic (and not dogmatic) point of view, Focalors behaves like the Father because she sends Furina on the earth to suffer.

    I'm glad I'm not the only one who saw all these references. But you saw a lot more. Dang, I feel bad, now, being the 'Judas' in the story. It actually goes along with many theories that say the Traveler is Lucifer, as the Bible says that Judas was used by Satan to betray Jesus. Ugh~ Say it ain't so!!!
    It's not much, but I wanted to add that two of Neuvillette's battle lines immediately reminded me of Bible quotes: "Be sanctified" and "Let the mighty be humbled!" Speaking of which, I don't know how I think of him as being the 'Leviathan', as many Christians view that creature as the Devil himself; though some just think of the Leviathan as a beautiful, mighty creature that only God could create. Whenever I read that verse, I just assumed it was describing a dinosaur.
    One of the things I really wanted to touch upon in my own videos but never did was something called "The Genesis Gap". Not too many believe in this concept, I've only heard it spoken of by one preacher who says dinosaurs never existed: This theory explains why God is floating over the waters with waters above him just before he created Earth and everything on it; because the entire universe had a Great Flood to kill all the evil that had run rampant. In other words, space was flooded and that got me thinking: Is the Primordial Sea in space? That would explain the narwhal breaking through what looks like a glass dome; the glass dome being the fake sky or 'Veil'. Continuing the Genesis Gap story, what evil that was running rampant was thought to be . . . Dragons. Ruled over by Satan. (All those dinosaur bones are actually dragon bones!) This also sounds a lot like what happened to Teyvat when the Usurper came down, taking the Dragons' powers away in order for humans to live there.
    Of course, I didn't want to talk about this, because it kinda implies that the Usurper is God and the Heavenly Principles - which many players view as the true evil. Being a devout Christian, I didn't want people to get the wrong impression of my faith. More than usual, anyway. I don't really know if Hoyoverse would use such a story as inspiration, however, but I couldn't help but think of it while doing the Fontaine archon quest.
    Back to add a few more things that have to do with the game over-all, perhaps you or someone has mentioned it already but it's been on my mind for a while. God is said to have seven spirits and has been called many things such as: The God of Wisdom, the God of Eternity, the God of Justice, the God of Free will (or Freedom), the God of War, the God of Love, and the Rock. It's poetically sad that in Genshin it is said that people stopped loving the God of Love as that is what has happened in the real world. People have stopped believing, trusting, or loving God. Although I do still find it hard to believe that Hoyoverse is going that deep with their game. For Fontaine and Sumeru, I can see it, but the whole game being inspired by the Christian faith?
    Finally, going to Fontaine again, there is a Teapot voice line that Neuvillette says about not fretting about possible poverty, food rations, and such for he would be waiting for 'me' in the outside of that world. This immediately reminded me of the Bible lessons where Jesus says to not worry about being poor, clothed, or fed for He will be there with me and we would see things through together. It really threw me off hearing Neuvillette say that. (Of course, it's paraphrased.)

    • @effortlessfury
      @effortlessfury 7 місяців тому +1

      Well the overarching "God mythos" in Genshin is heavily Gnostic. All of Teyvat's Gods, Archon or otherwise, are named after Ars Goetia demons. The game pulls from many myths, legends, religions, and historical events and figures to weave a new world and story out of ours.
      Each region has a story heavily inspired by its own region's basis but can also pull from unassociated aspects, as well. For example, Enkanomiya is based on Atlantis, which has nothing to do with Japan despite Enka being related to Inazuma.

    • @LunaWilde
      @LunaWilde 7 місяців тому

      @@effortlessfury While I don't know all of Genshin's lore since I missed out on a lot of the limited-time events, I do know that the game is inspired by what you said. Growing up, I read a lot of folktales, fairy tales, and myths; with anime and manga teaching me about Japan's legends and beliefs. History was my favorite high school subject and I wanted to become an archeologist at one point, dreaming of exploring ancient ruins, discovering new ones, and puzzling out the past's mysteries. I recognize many of the game's influences, so I know it isn't just based on one faith or one culture. I'm surprised with myself, though, that I didn't see that Enkanomiya is based on Atlantis. I was obsessed with that mythical city in my youth, I wanted to find it and tried to figure out where it could have sunk. I guess since Enkanomiya is located in a region inspired on Japan I just didn't see it being Atlantis. (of course, there was an event there that I missed out on which I know had some lore attached to it, so . . .)

    • @dougligaming

      Yes there are many references to Gnostism! Some of them like Gnosis meaning knowledge were planned to be in this video. But Gnotism became it's own rabbit hole and I decided to stay focused on the biblical references instead. I might do a video on it in the future.
      As for Enkanomiya going from reading Japanese names and phrases to suddenly Greek words and phrases was the weirdest whiplash in my poor nerd life. Like I honestly know more Greek words than Japanese. I just was not expecting Atlantis there lol

    • @dougligaming
      @dougligaming  7 місяців тому

      Fun fact many believe Atlantis to be the Egyptian retelling of the sudden destruction of the Minoans (the group before the Greeks). So Atlantis was the Island Crete and the destruction was caused by a mudslide from the volcano and a tsunami hitting the coast because of the volcano eruption. Of course people still debate this because of the measurements Plato provided but there is no way they were accurate writing the story down hundreds of years after it had happened.

    • @dougligaming
      @dougligaming  7 місяців тому +1

      So the Lucifier connection definitely goes deeper than just tempting Furina. I just didn't cover it because it wasn't Fontaine related and felt like old news? Basically Aether being cast out of Celestia in the opening cutscene, losing his wings, and then the theory that the game will end with us destroying the Heavenly Principles (trying to destroy god).
      There are definitely battle lines that sound biblically based. For example the Abyss Heralds say things like "Grace be Upon you" and "Be Sanctified". and there's literally one called the Baptist.
      I have never heard of this Genesis Gap. I have just always been under the assumption that one can not measure a day before the sun is even created or a planet to rotate around that sun. So the "days" were just a period of time where God created one item and then the next item. Those items did not have to each be created in under 24 hours because hours did not even exist.
      As for the sky being a sea even the egyptian's believed that. They called the primordial sea Nun and out of that sea came Ra who then created everything else. The earth being a rock floating in that sea.
      It's funny that you should mention dinosaurs actually being dragons, because i've always seen it in reverse. That the dragons (at least the European variety) were actually descriptions of dinosaur bones. No ancient culture could look at a t-rex skull and not tremble at the assumption that it might still walk the earth.
      I do not believe Mihoyo is aiming for the usurper god to be the christian God Almighty. The mythos makes if very clear that humans and dragons and gods all existed on Teyvat before the arrival of the Usurper. The Christian God created all things. The Usurper simply arrived and changed things and created their own laws (the Heavenly Principles). Mihoyo has been smart about what they hint at and what they keep vague in order to not get in trouble with Chinese censors but also not alienate players of all backgrounds. I believe they will keep the true creation of the Teyvat universe vague and are intentionally making the Usurper not that person. So as to not imply killing any religion's creation deity. (Jesus is different because killing him is kind of the point)
      -Sorry this got long

      well seeing as we're building up to the climax where we destroy the heavenly principles. Yeah i think we might be the bad guys. But I don't know how intentional it is on the travelers part. They truly wanted to help Furina and also stop the prophecy. They also were the push needed to make sure the prophecy happened.

      I do not have one breaking it all down yet. But a video on Deshret's kingdom is on the to do list! Dirge of Biliqis is a little bit harder to break down. All of the titles are linked to Babylon verses in the bible, but the story of Gurabad we learn from Liloupar is Persian (The empire after the Babylonians). I'd just have to research Persian myths along with the torah to make sure i pick out everything and don't assign things to the wrong source. But it's definitely doable

    if I may add Furina’s title Regina of All Waters, Kindreds, Peoples and Laws is probably a reference to Whore of Babylon: “Then the angel said to me, 'The waters you saw, where the prostitute sits, are peoples, multitudes, nations and languages” (John 17:15 NIV)

But I will say some parts are definitely more interesting than others. And there's nothing wrong with just jumping in at the interesting stories

    I thought i was the only one notice this similarities with biblical story. Traveler more like Judas sending Jesus to the cross. And the connection between Focalor and Furina is like Father and Jesus, Jesus is the representation of Father in the flesh. Just like Furina is the representation of Focalor's in the flesh.
    And I think Neuvillete is the church as the witness.
