Very thorough. Thanks man. Just did the same thing. Got the Ultra yesterday and now, I'm figuring out ways to not use the phone. That was the plan all along. I'm pretty much always in front of the computer for my job, so if I find I need to grab my phone, I'm now asking if I can achieve the same results using my desktop. Of course, I won't be hailing an Uber from my computer, but when I leave the house for light travel, errands and exercise, I'm hoping to leave the phone at home and perhaps, just taking a charger with me if I think I'm going to need it. I'm kind of like your parents in a way, progressing towards older age, so to speak, and only need to to text, make some calls, listen to music, and use gps, so we'll see if this is a good fit for me.
I see the point of the video. However, my realization is different. I work with my iPhone. I organize my life with the iPhone. But since I've been using the watch, I've often left my iPhone at home. Urgent things come through and other things can wait. I also want as little disruption as possible when I'm walking with my wife or working out in the gym. But in an emergency I can be reached or contact someone. This is especially important when you have children.
Thanks for this video! I have been considering buying the Ultra precisely to heal my phone addiction and the battery of the Ultra would be enough to stand on its own all day in Cellular so I thought it was a good way. But you made some very good points here. Not going to waste money on the Ultra
So, yeah, not all the apps are there yet…especially speciality apps. Curious, do you use an iPad as well that you could tether to the phone? I’m wondering if I can get rid a (1) device since I carry a iPhone, wear an Apple Watch, carry and iPad and a MacBook Pro. Hopefully more apps will become available to allow you to replace that phone…if you want that. Great review. Gave me a few things to consider.
Those of us that remember Dick Tracy are still amazed that his watch now exists and the average guy can be a super hero and a whole lot more. Someday, a wristwatch will do all you ask of your phone today and more. That day will come quicker than any of us can imagine.
Apple already has you covered, sort of. You can easily set up Focus and do not disturb for any time during the day across all your Apple devices and essentially voluntarily limit anything or everything your phone does. You can even set it up to trigger with Geo fences or movement like driving. It’s built in, free, and works seamlessly across all your Apple devices.
I've been debating on switching to Apple phones/products from previously disliking them, so I've been doing tons of research and I absolutely love your reviews because you touch on the good and the bad and avoid a bias opinion and it's super helpful so thank you!!
Don’t think I could go completely on the watch either but there are times I do find I can go for a run, etc. and not have social media and stuff to distract me from being in reality. But I agree there are things I need the phone for and developers just haven’t made apps for some of what I use.
I have Apple Watch 5 with Cellular. I used to go for a run without my iPhone, thinking it weights too much and doesn't provide anything I need while exercising. Well, one time I lost my keys. I wasn't worried because I had a Apple Tag in them. It turned out that the full tracking app worked only via Phone and I wan't able to activate the lost mode via watch. I was so frustrated. I had to call a service to open my home door and get my phone to activate the lost mode. After that I have not left my phone behind.
Bank apps, mail apps, third party chat apps and tons more need to be compatible and optimized for the watch environment... sadly, for now is not the best experience for people wanting to replace their phone. But hey!, with this hardware I could see that coming in a near future, maybe next year at best!
I don't really believe the Ultra is supposed to replace the phone. Its meant to be a companion to the phone. However my experience using the watch without my phone, for example at the gym, a quick run into the store or errands, etc, has been great. I actually love being able to go in the gym with just my Airpods and my Ultra and it does in fact, remove the distraction of the phone between sets and so forth. The issue with its limitations living outside of the US, I mean is what it is. Great video, but I think the Ultra is fine for almost anyone not just extreme athletes and such, as long as you understand its not meant to replace your phone, just compliment it.
Well, my personal ideas on buying this watch is do not need to take my phone with me on gym or to buy something, or going on a dinner.. small moments on day not relationed to my work. i think it may serve me well.
I've been using an AW for a few years now and was surprised and annoyed at how few apps there were for it and how many apps had actually been withdrawn. No doubt there are many reasons for that, one of which is likely because Apple chose to not include the cell connectivity in all the watches. Uber might be a good example of that -- why bother when a huge majority of users are going to have their phone with them anyway. Plenty of other companies would be thinking the same way. With the Ultra, Apple is now building a firmer base of users who do at least have the option of adding their watch to a cell plan. I have connected mine and am thinking of ways I can use that capability, much like you discuss in the video. I suspect that the cost to Apple of including the SIM technology into their watches is so small today that maybe they will roll that feature out to all their varieties at some point. The other issue with the AW has been the dearth of physical buttons, so maybe the new one on the Ultra will spur a wave of apps as well. It is certainly not very handy so far. Here again, that extra button needs to go on all the AW models if the app developers are to make an effort to take advantage of it. Maybe some clever developer will figure out how to create a web browser interface that could be used on a watch.
My Non Ultra Watch easily does two full days per charge - occasionally I stretch it to 3 days (Really from morning on day 1 to late night on day 2 (or 3)).
I found a continuum exists between watch-phone-tablet-laptop. There are small periods where I can lean on the Ultra. Keeping that phone within reach however is habitual and necessary most of the day and especially if traveling. And as life demands change, I move up the ladder to tablet or laptop.
For the most part I agree and it matches my experience but there are plenty of occasions when I like going out without my phone if its a quick errand or walking the dog. Having said that I agree there will be plenty of things you can’t take care of during that time. Taking pictures or replying to anything with more then a simple response. For podcasts on the watch I think Castro is the best one. Makes it easy to sync automatically your queue to the watch for listening without needing to use cell data.
Good video, For me the watch is just a nice looking and durable watch, so I see everything it can do as a bonus. I’m thinking of buying it for things like not having to dig for my phone in my tight jeans pocket to check an incoming message while driving and such.
My biggest issue with the watch is software related. It is so stupid that we can’t respond to a text…or do anything else…while on a phone call. While on a phone call, the rest of the watch is locked. I have no idea why this happens.
I would like to share my experience regarding addiction to social media. I bought a new iPhone with Apple Watch in order to do the same thing you tried to do, but while moving from my old phone, I didn't activate all the social media apps I was addicted to in my new phone.. I just activated WhatsApp with a private number for close family and friends, Which doesn't have any groups I'm subscribed to. I left the rest of my social media apps on the old phone.. the result is that I became less addicted than before and had to turn on my old phone just to see the notifications and noticed that I was less interested in those notifications. I used to say that smartphones are a great invention, but the media has ruined it.
Pbuying an Apple Watch to replace your phone is like buying an iPad to replace your laptop. It won’t work because it is not meant to work that way. You need one of every product category to have the full Apple experience.
@Phillip Banes ahhhhh what? you cannot replace a device 90%. YEa I think your opening statement "For most people an iPad can replace a traditional computer." is not based on anything more than wishful thinking. The Ultra is intriguing product to me considering i really only need to be called in an emergency, and other than that the two requirements I have are GPS+maps & podcasts. Ultra provides all of these features. It could be a nice way to "detox"?
Funny - I seen this exact same video from a different UA-camr and he loved it. Lee complaining - what else is new. Basically - "Oh my watch isn't a mini computer"

Great video. Am I the only person who never believed the Watch could replace the phone? From day one, developers for the iPhone didn’t make compatible apps for the iPad, let alone the Watch, it’s app store is relatively tiny. More than other watch systems, but not Apples iOS store. Also, it used to be marketed as an “at a glance” device, the complete opposite of using a phone all day. The Watch is where you go to quickly get important notifications so zero focus on social media or complex operations like a phone. As the iPhone gets more advanced, so will the Watch. You can have a simple phone that is not smart, that’s a solution. You get an ipad which you don’t carry all the time. And you can get small and good cameras nowadays
Never send money Don’t use Uber Make it a point to never use my camera on my phone. And always have a real camera Don’t use what’s app This watch sounds perfect for making calls for me when I’m in homes doing home repairs for my business instead of digging out my phone while underneath a sink or on a ladder. It be nice to just leave my phone in the van all day.
Yea, that wud be the most productive. But like Stevitza said when he was alive: "we arent a company that does what users really want". There's so many videos on YT that say that iPad-watch compatibility isnt possible.
I don’t understand, if you do what you need to do throughout the day, why do you care if you use your phone for entertainment? If your addiction affects your life to the point you can’t get stuff done, then it makes sense, but are you just implying that you don’t like to be entertained by your phone? I don’t get the argument.
Not an advocate for the watch. I believe you still need another device. Either a PC or iPad. Having this with and Apple Watch, will probably be enough for people.
I went 60 days without my phone recently. Like it broke and I said not today ISIS. Going to make a video on it too,I travel too so... I wanted to face my fears and I did. I want this but NO phone. Like to at home...... No phone. Couple vids coming
Whats your issue with WhatsApp? Its just like iMessage really but just every phone can use it. I don't know anyone who really uses iMessage since you can't message everyone you know
@@timk8258 I thought Android devices don’t support iMessage. Well not officially. Maybe some 3rd party apps which your average person may not use. Here in UK, people just use WhatsApp since works on both
@@_AndrewYee If I text someone on android it just goes through as a regular sms or whatever it’s called. No special app or anything, just works that way automatically
@@timk8258 I get that - and I know if I was to use Message app and send message to someone on Android (or they have iMessage turned off), it'll just be sent as regular SMS - although as I said, NEVER use it and use Whatsapp like basically everyone here. But people use iMessage I assume for similar reasons to using WhatsApp like sending longer text messages, it using data to send so no cost sending messages or images, encryption, read receipts, sending stickers (if thats your thing) etc. But if you use WhatsApp, its like iMessage but its on both iPhone and Android. My point of my original comment was just wondering what he did not like about WhatsApp since its mostly like iMessage but works on Android too

Actually, you can send money to people but you can only do that with Apple Cash Family
10x for the insights.
I went 60 days without my phone recently. Like it broke and I said not today ISIS. Going to make a video on it too,I travel too so... I wanted to face my fears and I did. I want this but NO phone. Like to at home...... No phone. Couple vids coming
6:00 actually most people don’t.
Great idea. Sad ot does not work.
I just want to replace my phone because I hate carrying it in my pocket 😅
Apple Watches tend not to replace iPhone its a back up tool.
Whats your issue with WhatsApp? Its just like iMessage really but just every phone can use it. I don't know anyone who really uses iMessage since you can't message everyone you know
I message people with android phones all the time, no idea what you’re talking about
@@timk8258 I thought Android devices don’t support iMessage.
My point of my original comment was just wondering what he did not like about WhatsApp since its mostly like iMessage but works on Android too
Wow how many problems you have there.😂
