- You can do it. Anyone can tie GREAT flies. However, you need to do certain things...
What are your thoughts about this video? Would you add some advice? I may include it in some future video
Cheers

I hope when people search fly tying, your video leads the search. Great video on tying no matter your skill level. Thank you for sharing your talents 👍
Thank you so much. Unfortunately i am far from being near the top in the search page. But hopefully that will change. 😀😀🍻
Sound advice "Mentor"! You have improved my tying tremendously and I even tied a few flies for the World Flyfishing Championship in Slovakia. Something I would not have been confident to do without your tuition. Kindest thoughts from NZ.
Thank you for this comment so much. Did you go to slovakia or you tied for someone else? I was on Worlds there in 2017. They have very nice rivers.
What helpful, common sense comments and tips you kindly share with us …thanks so much for helping me improve and enjoy my fly tying ( and subsequent fly fishing for wild trout and grayling) …I now tie every day and just love it…I view you as my mentor…thanks and best wishes to you and your family
Thank you a lot for such kind comment. I am glad to be part of your improvement, journey in tying. Cheers
Vladimir
Thank you !
Thank you so much for watching 🍻🍻
Thank You for taking time to share your insight and approach to the craft and art of fly tying. I firmly believe with the points you made. Practicing the basic techniques from starting the thread on the hook to whip finishing and everything in between... not tying flies but practicing each individual step to tie a fly is essential. You are correct, repetition develops the skills needed to achieve satisfaction from the time spent at the vise. Best Regards
Thank you for watching and for your very kind comment.

There you go another amazing video from you fella. Thanks!
Thanks a ton. Cheers 🍷🍷
My grandfather taught me to lubricate the metal ferrules on my fly rods to keep them from getting stuck. Actually I use the facial oils for many things now.
Thats cool to know. I only knew about bobbin holder. Thanks
Thanks for the tips on reference books! Always nice to hear what others regard as well written and worthwhile resources!
Those are what i like. There are books about patterns which i don't like. Ask more people, you will have better sample 😀🍻
At the shop. we often have people placing very small orders...1 of Adams...1of Pheasant Tail and 1 of Caddis Pupa...that's when I know that person is learning how to 'undo' a fly.
Oholi, we need more 'Journeyman' anglers to keep the spirit going...teach where applicable. If only the new 'Apprentices' of our wonderful sport would be willing to learn..face to face instead of relying on socials.
Thanks again, I salute you as always, as a Journeyman angler, to you as a Master angler. Thank you #Oholisfliesandfishing 🤟💥🌕
Hahaha, well. its ok, I guess some want to see whats the fly made of.
What is "Journeyman" i am a bit lost there. But i agree we need much more face to face time. Social media is killing humanity. Thank you for nice comment. Cheers and tight lines :)
Refreshing!!!
Thanks 😀😀🍻 glad you think like that. Its kind of new kind of video format for me.
I really appreciate your information, I really learned a lot from your advice. I have so many things that I need to learn, a beautiful soft hackle,

Thank you very much for your kind words. We all have so much to learn. Thats why its so fun
🍻😀
Another excellent video with the advantage of wisdom and experience to augment your knowledge. I've kept a lot of the early flies I tied, rather than cut them off to re-use the hook, just because it helps to keep me humble and to be able to compare my progress. I agree with your choices of books, too, although the Benchside Reference can be a little overwhelming for a beginning tyer. To that list I would add Gary Borger's Designing Trout Flies, which like the Feather Mechanic also concentrates on the "engineering" aspects rather than just describing patterns. As does van der Spuy, Borger encourages you to think about why you use a certain material, and how it is applied to achieve the effect you are looking for.
Thank you so much for your kind words. Keeping old flies is excellent way to see progress. I have some 9f my old flies somewhere. At least i hope so. I moved so many times that they may be lost as well.
Thank you for recommending Gary's book. I will try to buy one.
Cheers.
Vladimir 🍻😀
Practice practice practice. if you have the drive, you will make good flies that will catch trout and also trust your fly, and it will catch 🎉
Practice is probably number one
Perfect video as always!😉👏👍
Thanks so much :)
Bravo oholi, svaki video ispratim, bogme i naucim nesto novo... ja sam novi u pravljenju mušica, ucim po malo😊
Hvala puno.

Clear, streight to the point, rational and humble. All of these are reasons you are my tying mentor, mate. Great video again! Cheers 🍻
Thank you so much my friend. Is there anything you would like to add as advice? I may be doing another video. 🍻🍻
@@Oholisfliesandfishing Not really, just keep it up as you've been doing so far. I love to watch your content. There is always something new to learn. Uzdravlje 🍻
Hi Vladimir. It took me about 20 years to buy a good pair of scissors. Fly tying and a low budget mixes like oil and water.
Not necessarily. I've could've used razors just as fine. But in general, its much better to use good quality tools and materials....that said...its not necessary and people with lower budget can and should find cheaper alternatives.
@@Oholisfliesandfishing That was then, 20+ years ago, I’ve improved on quite a few things since then. Moja zena and I are very frugal with most things still, but now I can afford a few more luxuries like tying some flies to inspire new travel destinations. Zivot je dobry!
Traveling is the best thing a person can do. 🍻🍻
Great video my friend and yes, "The Fly Tier's Benchside Reference in Techniques and Dressing Styles" is super awesome. I suggest buying this book to all new tiers. It's pricey but worth the money and I suggest looking for used copies if money is tight. Like you stated, buy the best tools and materials you can afford so you aren't buying "twice"!
Thanks so much. Glad you like it. The book is amazing
I got used copy too. Didnt know there are new available
@@Oholisfliesandfishing I did manage to get a new copy a bunch of years ago for 45% off the list so I grabbed it up. New or used, what "matters most" is simply the content within its pages!
@@freddysflyz exactly. I was in love with it from the first moment i opend it. 😀
@@Oholisfliesandfishing One more to mention that "The Feather Mechanic" reminded me of. The title is "Oliver Edwards' Flytyers Masterclass" (by Oliver Edwards). Check this out too if you are not familiar with it. Another fantastic book with a lot of pages full of technique for a just a handful of patterns.
@@freddysflyz i only watched video series. But i will certainly look for it. Thank you for the suggestion
Good ideas.I think with all social media of any kind. the main thig s to be cvl and encouraging. People who are simply blunt and sarcastic are awful. We can always help wth good tips and encouragement. Social media h=generally have contributed to very poor behaviour ni many fields. Hopefully fishiing and fly tying less so. :-)
Thanks. I agree, social media became kind of necessary evil... although i dont see it as that necessary.
People definitely need to learn proper etiquette there. Too many are feeling way too comfortable saying anything. However, regardless of their way of saying things, people shouldn't take it too hard....after all...its people who we dont see, dont know, unimportant people who are doing these bad things....so why would anyone care? Thats why i try to see if there is anything there to learn from their comments.
Just a thought.... our minds arent prepared to deal with social media and so many interactions with so many people and i believe that is the reason there is a thing called bullying on social media. People just arent used to it....
Sorry for my long answer 😀😀🍻
All good and I agree. Our trout season starts today. I will go fishing tomorrow. :-)@@Oholisfliesandfishing

Hello i have to say that you are one of my tying mentors, the main one i would say. I have learnt a lit watching and paying atention to your advices. Than you so much!. Do you know if there are ebpok version of these books. Feather mechanic has a ebook, the other 2?
Thank you so much for your kind comment. I dont know if those books are available in e versions I am very much in favor of printed books. Old fashioned guy :)
@@Oholisfliesandfishing ahaha, me too. But getting those book here in Argentina will be difficullt. One suggestions: in the videos sometimes would be usefull to hear material alternatives to the ones being used, just in case those material are not in our tying box.
@@SurbuceoAr i will try to do it. I like the suggestion
Thank you
Using your nose to lubricator the bobbin holder I’m sure was a Davie McPhail method.. I find getting proportions correct and volumes of dubbing was and remains a challenge, any recommendations to apply simple methods or apply rules to get that right each time?
Davie for sure, some people actually told me to grease it with my nose in one of my older videos. Cool advice.
Regarding proportions. Its easiest to use hook as a gauge. If you need every tail to be the same, align it along the shank, measure the required length and tie it in... same principle goes for hackle, wings....you can use any part of the hook as a gauge. By time ...your eyes will do it without measuring anything.
Hope this helps.

I've cut many flys hooks are expensive
I usually give them away at this point. Once or twice a year i empty my boxes and give flies to young anglers around
No tied for the NZ Captain.
Cool. They did ok this year?
