Thank you. You just saved me $40. It read about Italicus last night and, I have to say, Bergamot liqueur sounds like a dream to me and like you said, the bottle is gorgeous. It's like an elegant cologne/perfume bottle. Yours is the first honest review I've heard of it and I can definitely live without flat 7 up.
I find that this is a very delicate liqueur and does not have a strong citrus punch. I was a little disappointed upon opening it just like you were. I agree it is very sweet. I find it is best used to brighten up a cocktail, or even have replaced using a syrup with this (unless you are using the syrup for viscosity). It’s actually great once you figure out what you like it incorporated into.
@@UnclePete I never quite got the elderflower thing, but have heard it called bartenders ketchup. I think of this in a similar way. Like you said, a condiment, but a condiment that is better than ketchup (not a high bar).
Oh man everybody is crazy for elderflower, I never really got that either. I will admit that I've heard it called bartender ketchup before and thats why I talked about condiments. We are on the same wavelength!!
A couple years back the rep for Italicus came into the bar where I was working. She suggested I submit a drink to the competition they were having and poured me a few ounces to experiment with. Not only did I space out the competition, but I still haven't played around with the product she gave me 😐 I would fuck around with this in a last word though. I suspect it would be great with chartreuse.
I’d couldn’t disagree more . This product is amazing and great replacement of Cointreau . Use it in Gine let’s replacing the sugar. Use it with aperol . Use it mojitos . Can brighten up and classic
Dont know if there are any quality issues with some but IMO this Liqeur dosnt have much taste. I completely go with UnclePete. Definitly no good in any cocktails which already has any cirtus in it, you may as well just use Simpe Sirup. I can tast any bergamott and a drop of Orange blossom water has more floral notes than this liquer. Nice glas bottle though.
Pete I am so happy to have found your UA-cam channel!! I really mean that!! I am learning to experiment with cocktails and spirits and amari and liqueurs and I find your reviews and cocktails fantastic and helpful. I really appreciate and like your analysis of all these amazing alcohol products!! Like you I adore Bergamot. Hey I have never seen those lovely oranges you mention here!! Vancouver is a foodie city so I have to search for them. When do they usually come out? Now I do like the second cocktail you made here a lot. I have never had it but I am sure going to get the ingredients and make this one!! Like you I like martinis but I don't always love them and my martini has to be gin with just the smallest bit of vermouth. I admit I have a bias for higher proof spirits. I'm loving experimenting with amari!! Fernet is a favourite!! Bitter, dry, high proof - love that!! Do you check out Sherry? Cheers Pete!! Fabulous channel. I am loving these videos!! Be well!!! :-)
Oh thanks you so much! Getting supportive comments like this is incredibly encouraging, Thank you!!! Bergemots like a lot of citrus come out in the winter, January or February. I don't see them for very long, you really have to keep your eye peeled. Not sure how easy they are to find in Canada :) Sherry is amazing of course. I prefer the sweeter ones, the very dry ones like fino don't appeal to me as much but a cream or medium sherry is the best of all worlds. I'll probably do a sherry video at some point. I have lots of amaro reviews you can check out, thank you so much for watching! Cheers!
Darn!....I have been waiting for the perfect time to open the bottle here at the house...So, I thought I would go onto You Tube first to see what folks are doing with it ...for a bit of inspiration ....I LOVE bergamot!..there is a tree here in the garden and I am ecstatic when I burst into one of those bright delights ,weather it be the zest in a beverage or using them for lemon bars instead of lemon or making curd.....so YES!!! I was hoping that Italicus would be bergamot heaven......Hmmmm I will first get over this sad news in your video and do the unveiling on another day ... with fresh bergamots on hand for backup
I have a bottle of Italicus in my bar. I love the earl grey martini, and earl grey tea, so I figured this would be fantastic, but as you discovered, it was not. I tried it in champagne, and it's fine, and I tried it with gin, and that's fine too. Nothing special. I definitely won't be buying it again. It's not bad, but it also isn't good.
That is a great description, it's fine. But it didn't live up to my hopes. seems a fine thing to sweeten a drink with , but I won't get it again. The bottle looks good on m windowsill though. :)

Glad I could help!
I have subbed italicus in cocktails calling for elderflower liqueur with good results.
Great tip!
2 oz italicus over ice top off with grapefruit soda, simple, smooth cocktail on a hot day
Sounds lovely!

I agree with that. By the time I figured out what to do, the bottle was empty! Lol
I tried adding a 1/4 oz to a daiquiri and it was very well received. It became my mother-in-law's go to instead of vodka tonic.
Well that does sound a lot better than a vodka tonic! I think this stuff is good, but not as exciting as I'd hoped.

Last word, yeah as maraschino substitute, thats what I'm saying. This bottle is finally almost empty and to be honest I'm ready to move on.
Once it’s empty you should smash it into the nearest stone fireplace and proclaim “Italicus! I HAVE SLAYED THEE!” 🤓
Aaaahhh hahahaha I'm going to do this.

Thanks for the review - I've been seeing this about a bit and had been wondering if it was worth it
Glad I could help! Not sure if I answered that for you or not LOL
TH was really interesting... Thank you for the review!!
My pleasure! Hoping to do more like this in the future.
My wife and I like the Italicus and often substitute St. Germain with it.
I feel like those two are in the same category somehow.
I like Italicus, but the first thing I thought of when I smelled it was Eau de Cologne 4711
I had to google what that is, but that sounds accurate!
I’d like to try it but here in Australia it costs $80 a bottle and that’s a bit expensive.
Woah that is a lot.
Here in Italy it comes around 30/35 euros. No way this is worth AU$80

Yeah I was a bit underwhelmed, but you should just open it up and see what you think. It won't compare to fresh bergemots, but it is worth drinking.

7up thats gone flat reminds me of a lot of apertifs tbf. And theres a lot of drinks i love to make with apertifs that would taste awful without them
Fair enough! Cheers!
I wish I could buy a bottle if Italicus for a mere $40, because here in Australia it costs a ridiculous $80 minimum😱
I hear the prices there are crazy, not really worth $80 or even 40. TBH
Thank you, you saved me 45€ !
You're welcome!
Proof that not everyone who is "in the business" has a "golden palate"--and some actually have what would be better described as a "tin palate"...
Everyone has a different pallette, and people prefer different things.
Uncle, Just a reminder that Friday (20th) is World Gibson Day!
Oh goodness. I guess I better break out the green onion vodka again.
@@UnclePete What break out again? I never put mine away. In the street trying to give it away!
LOL, my wife wont touch the stuff. I'm all on my own out here!😂
