Thank you so much for this video! Hi! New subscriber and very much a lover of sandbox-style play. I've gone through almost all of your content and really dig your contribution to the GMing advice world. :)
By contrast, my world-building style is highly collaborative. I use things like "Yes! Character..." and "Three Things" from , and "Remember the Time When" from an episode of . I find I get more investment in characters that way, and try to minimize my prep a la a "lazy" gamemaster.
That said, I don't play . Not that I don't want to; my docket is just so full of all the other games, like (, , , etc.), (), , , and many others.
Currently I'm shifting our local group to more of a sandbox style after running a couple of adventures, and your videos have been very timely. I hope to amalgamate your advice with my own style of farming out details about the setting, asking players what factions they'd like to see, what kinds of conflicts they'd like to see, some rumors they may have heard, "Where did you hear this Hutt Kajidic got their wealth?", and others.
I'm skimmed the campaign section and am reading the factions section in , so thank you for the recommendation! I'm also casually working my way through by the Fishel brothers. If you haven't read by Phil V. (of Gomestew fame; Engine Publishing), I strongly recommend it. Changed my prep completely in the best of ways.
I wanted to give a formal "Hi!" before I start diving into the comments. Some great people in here. :) Thanks again and keep up the good work!

S'a very nice review; the structured guidance in this really helped shortened my own prep, both in 5e and in other games. I'd say if you aren't already comfortable with how your GM game prep is going, this may be a good product to look at.

Great review. Looks like a worthwhile book, even tho I’m old-school & not a fan of modern D&D.

Thanks for sharing this! It’s a great breakdown on how to blend the strengths of all the editions.

Good review. Having read both this book, and Justin Alexander’s “So you want to be a Gamemaster”, I prefer the latter, though

Fair enough! I haven’t picked that one up yet.

@@Earthmote It’s a solid read. A lot of it won’t be groundbreaking for anyone with a good amount of DM experience under their belt, but the info and the format it’s given in is great, and I wouldn’t hesitate at all to hand it to a newbie who wanted to DM (and sometimes, it’s just nice to brush up on the basics).

    Excellent review.
You touched on the concerns I've had with that style of Game Mastering translating to OSR.
The Goblin would be a brilliant Rumor delivery system.Since that's what clues and secrets are anyways.
I would like to suggest that you consider a neutral white Lamp Shade. This one is distractingly interesting pattern wise!

Thanks for the input! I’m still playing with the recording set up. So, I’ll keep that in mind.

Fair enough! It definitely has a more modern focus. And if you already have a process then it might not add much to it.

There's something about this book that just doesn't speak to me. There's good advice for sure, but I just can't get myself to read it. I've tried many times 😅 So thanks for going through it. I have to say that I believe you would have had a better video as far as advice goes if you went through similar areas of advice with less reference to the book.
In general the idea of minimalist/pragmatic prep and finding nyt own ways of doing it has been very helpful. And prepping for an OSR game is so much easier and fun for me than it was prepping for new school D&D. Like not having to prep a fight scene with intetesting battle maps 😅

Yeah maybe I’ll make more videos on prep or minimalist prep. For this one I just wanted to take a look at The Return of the Lazy Dungeon Master, since it is a book of GM advice that gets promoted in some DnD communities.

@@Earthmote I dig that you did it! It's the first look into the book further than the first pages for me. I might end up opening it up again at some point.

I think we need someone really prominent in the OSR/NSR/FKR to make an alternative handbook like this. Someone who gets and actually likes these style of games and understands them well. Like a Ben Milton or somebody like that. So many of these products are clearly made by 5e / PF2e type guys that love the marvel heroes at a rennfaire style of play/aesthetics. I don't say this to be hyper critical of the whole Sly-Flourish line. Just that there are a lot of features of old school play that aren't being addressed.

@@phaedruslive Yeah! One candidate would be GrumpyWizard (blogger/youtuber). I think it will happen eventually. Pushing out new rpg systems is getting kind of crowded 😅

It's a really smart way to prepare players for the old school style of play. Punish mistakes, reward clever solutions to problems and desensitize players to the reality of character death.
