- One of my favorite Eastern Sierra day hikes - the Saddlebag Lake Loop. This is a remake to a previously released short film - filmed in August of 2017 with a Sony a6500 and GoPro. Enjoy!

Autumn flower blooms midst majestic mountains and stunning lakes & streams, green & white & blue & brown views. Yea, like the human soul is made to feed on such beauty & splendor ! ! ! Like the stuff great poetry is made of ! yet what words or language can't properly express such beauty ?
Good scenery starts at about 9:00. Some very pretty mountains. Lucky you have a nice woman who enjoys this too. Thanks for sharing.

I really think this trail is a hidden gem in the Yosemite NP and has always been underrated. Good to see this video!
Wei Wang, actually this trail is just outside the “boundary line” of Yosemite NP. Perhaps, that’s why many Yosemite hikers overlook it..., or simply - they just haven’t discovered it yet. I always felt that some get scared off hearing that the trail(s) start off above 10,000 feet... 🤔 just as you step out of you vehicle only a few yards away from the trailhead!!!

What a difference a week or so makes! We did this same trek mid-August (2018). The snow was all gone from the trails by then.The weather was fantastic too, just as you had here. This is an AWESOME area ... with very few visitors. We entered from the west side and enjoyed GreenStone Lake first. You guys also experienced the solitude that can be encountered back there - at almost any time during the season. Outstanding video, truly enjoyed it.

Wow unbelievable scenery! We have our first Sierra’s hike at the end of August. Onion Valley to Charlotte & Rae Lakes. Hopefully we can add this day hike to our itinerary.

Took my wife for her first overnight backpacking trip on this loop, we had bear cubs visit us in the middle of the night with the mom bear sniffing our tent.. 🐻

one of my favorite areas. Ive taken a LOT of first time backpackers to this area. Take the ferry across the lake and do a short hike to one of the other lakes...set up camp and relax. Perfect for a first timer to get there feet wet into backpacking. Love Fly Fishing that area for Golden Trout....my destination most years after labor day holiday

No more water taxi. The resort was heavily damaged during the 2017 snow season and due to extensive repairs needed the owners put the property up for sale. The taxi was part of the resort. As of this date (02/2019) I don't know if they found a buyer, but not even their old website exists. However, just like Sheety33 you can start at the south end of the lake and hike to the north end to start the loop hike.
@@rkatrails No more taxi...not surprised. I was up there after the damage and it was closed then. Did not know it was up for sale....AGAIN. its had many owners over the years. Wonder where you pay for the campsites at the lake?....or is just 1st come 1st serve? Its still , even with out the taxi , a good place for a beginner. Short hike, camp for a night or two...and then hike back, Such a beautiful area
@@inkjob12 You're correct, first come first serve for the campground & self-register. And I agree wholeheartedly about being an excellent beginners backpacking trek & hiking to the north end is part of the fun & very scenic as Sheety's vid testifies. I plan to do an overnighter there mid-August.

This is so hard to watch. I'm from the East. Been on the JMT and the HST an I get home sick for the High Sierra when I watch these. Stranded here in PA!!!! You both are very fortunate to have them as your backyard. I envy you.

Stupendous Sheety. It's been 12 years since us 3 aussies have been there. Makes me yearn to return to see that beautiful scenery again. Shame the 360 quality is all there was as it doesn't do your cinematography justice at all. Thanks for the upload.

I think I'm doing something wrong during the upload - when initially uploaded, the quality is 360, but once rendered improves to 4k. Any tips?

August of 2017 explains so much snow, amazing and not even on the northeast shadows, it's all over. It looks more like June up there. Judging by the amount of trees you said about 10,000 feet and the treeline is 10,300-10,500, so pretty good guess. Good video with your typical gorgeous views a definite thumbs up.
This winter we got lots of precipitation here in California, so it'll probably be like that again when summer comes -- high water volume, blooming wild flowers, and plenty of snow cover. Planning my trip now ;-) I'm surprised he didn't encounter mosquitos!
@@mhtinla I've noticed that despite the presence of water, the mosquito cycle in August is low. Like I've been to Tuolumne Meadows n June and the mosquitos were voracious, but in August, even though there had been lots of rain and snow still melting, nowhere near as many mosquitos. Don't know where they went, but there wasn't very many.

Hi, a UV filter for your GoPro would reduce the blue haze in the distant mtns.
Where are you based out of that you get to all of these amazing spots? Do you typically make them weekend trips or just day hikes?
You should have taken the water taxi from the resort across Saddlebag Lake to the 20 Lakes Basin. That way you could have spent more time in the Hoover Wilderness.
Any idea if this trail will be passable in late June? I'd love to do this same hike in about 10 days from now but I don't know if snow will prevent that or not.
Another quality production by Sheety33. Your video gives enough info to understand the issues with this hike and the visual payoff. BTW: Are you and your wife anti-hiking poles? I get why you would find it awkward to use a pole while using the selfie stick for videos, but it would be a lot safe to use them for rock hopping crossings of snow melt swollen streams. Stay safe. Looking forward to seeing many more of your posts.
Thanks Gary! I’ve grown to like trekking poles actually ever since I first used them last October while hiking up a frozen Mt Whitney. I can see why people use them, but I prefer the ergonomics of my own two legs 99.9% of the time. For rock hoping or snow, absolutely use trekking poles! Thanks for the comment!!
Gary, Stop telling people what to do, hiking poles are nothing but drag and bother often they cause falling. Want to stay safe ? SLOW DOWN. Hop rocks, stay not safe.
Panoramic Trail. Go up 4 mile down Nevada and Vernal.
GREAT video! Where does the trailhead start and how many miles is this loop?
It's 12 miles west of Lee Vining. When Hwy 120, aka Tioga Pass is open in the summer, you turn off on to Saddlebag Lake road, a dirt road, then in approximately 2.5 miles you'll reach the lake parking. There are trails on both sides of the lake, but the one in the vid is on the east side. Hike about a mile to the north end of the lake, then you'll see where the loop trail begins. You can go clockwise or counterclockwise, but I prefer counterclockwise. The full loop trail is about 4 miles, but add 2 miles round-trip because of the hike to get to the loop.
It looks like there are myriad places to camp at any of the lakes along this loop. Did you see anyone set up for overnight camping?
That is more water than I've ever seen in that area. Not a surprise as 2017 was the record year for snowpack water equivalent in the Sierra Nevada, beating out the previous record year in 1983. I've heard you call your woman "pooky," "chewy" and "Harriet." Whatever it is she is gorgeous. I have a gorgeous, was my hiking partner, but now that I can't hike anymore, she is my walking partner.

so, there's a cut off trail along Saddleback Lake where you go into the Hoover Wilderness towards Odell Lake? I am confused here since I thought this was originally a video about doing the entire loop around Saddleback Lake. Please advise...
Hike past saddlebag, past Odell lake to Lake Helen, then head West towards Steelhead Lake and back down towards Saddlebag. Hope this helps.

Too bad the ferry no longer runs to the end of Saddlebag lake.
The more people will hate on California after watching this. They might even pack up and move to their favorite state of Texas.
The secret is out on this place. I fear it will be swamped with people in the years to come.
It's not a secret, bro. Lots of people go there every summer. They have a campground, snack bar, and ferry service. They just didn't show this in the video.
