Church of the Poison Mind and Victims are great ones. When Culture Club first hit the scene, Boy George's voice was compared to Smokey Robinson's. George's antics often overshadowed his incredible vocals.
Was wondering when you'd get back to Mr. George & Co! So many more to check out! "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me", "I'll Tumble 4 Ya", "Church of the Poison Mind", "Miss Me Blind", and "It's a Miracle" are all wonderful listens. Please also check out "The Safety Dance" by Men Without Hats... it's one of the most recognizable early 80s songs in existence.
"Do You Really Want to Hurt Me" went to #1 in the UK and topped the charts in 23 countries. Went to #2 in the U.S. "Karma Chameleon" was also a #1 hit in the UK, went to #1 in THIRTY countries, and was #1 in the U.S. 3 weeks running. "Karma Chameleon" was Culture Club's biggest hit.
Helen Terry’s voice is AWESOME! Before I ever saw a video of Boy George and Culture Club, I always thought Helen Terry was a Black woman because of that gorgeous voice. I was truly shocked to learn that she was white. She sure can belt out those notes!
Boy George was really good, and was being himself long before it was safe to do so. I had a good friend who came out back then, and said he was inspired by Boy George.
Not to try to diminish what George did or went through, but I always liked the story I heard that he grew up in a tough neighborhood, was pretty tough himself and had three brothers who would beat the crap out of you if you dared mess with him.
I cast my vote for DO YOU REALLY WANT TO HURT ME< it really shows off his vocals. I believe the song was about his secret relationship he had with the drummer of Culture Club.
One of their BEST hits! They were one of the biggest groups in the 80s. Boy George, the lead singer, was one of the first people to bring the term and the look of being a "Club Kid," in US. Definitely check out there other hits Do You Really Want To Hurt Me?, also the song, "Miss Me Blind", "Do you Deal in Black Money," "I'll Tumble 4 Ya," are some great ones.
HA! I did the same with my husband with Michael Jackson. He did not want to go. We left the concert with him yelling "Michael my man!" This was the Bad tour days. Always listen to your women :) We have seen Cyndi a few times, mostly as an opening act. She was walking the audience and to this day the husband brags "Cyndi Lauper touched me" (which she did)
LMAO! I have to admit, back in the early 80s (as I was "coming of age"), a LOT of the bands I listened to and watched when MTV became a thing, REALLY made my grandmother and my Boomer aunt/uncle question my sexuality (I'm straight, but not judgmental). But, as an "Early Gen-Xer", my mind and tastes were pretty wide open as far as music went. I love the music that drove the older generation(s) crazy, but not BECAUSE it drove them crazy. That was just a side benefit. =D I loved the soulful voice that Boy George had, and Culture Club, like many other bands of the era, blurred the lines of "traditional gender roles" and even sexual identity. Despite my family's viewpoints (them being very conservative minded) I had no problem with any band/group/singer(s) who could display an emotional message in their songs. I was inundated with opinions about "white music", "black music", "gay music", "straight music", etc.... and yet these SAME people loved watching Liberace's show on television! Now, you explain THAT one to me. I guess that in their minds, it was "okay", because he wasn't "openly gay". Yeah... okay... Liberace wasn't "openly gay"... More likely them being okay with Liberace but not Boy George pointed out the hypocrisy they were trying to get me to accept, and I wasn't having it. Let's just say there was a big disconnect between me and the older generations and leave it at that. Also, it was the early 80s that got me to start "not being afraid of who I was and what I liked". Although, it wasn't until the 90s when that really took hold, and I started dying my hair red and painting my fingernails black. Anyone who didn't like it could go spin.
This is my favorite Culture Club song. "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me" is probably their biggest hit after "Karma Chameleon", but "Church of the Poison Mind" is an underrated classic!!!
I remember when this album came out. I was teenager, working in the record department of a department store...yes I'm that old. Culture Club was the first group to make New Wave mainstream. Check out The Style Council, The Eurythmics and The Thompson Twins for more great British music of this era.
The song was about his relationship with the drummer in the band who didn't want to publicly acknowledge the relationship with George. The drummer ultimately ended up marrying a woman.
One of the best blue eyed soul singers I’ve ever heard he’s right there with George Michael,Steve perry and Daryl hall, actually he wrote the song about his secret relationship with the drummer in the band.

There was something about this song when it came out that I just loved. When you started playing the song the words just came back and I was singing along. Great choice for a song today I'm sitting here smiling and remembering the past.
"Do You Really Want to Hurt Me" is the song that catapulted them to stardom in the United States. It is definitely worth a listen, and is a bit different from this. For something really different, but equally as awesome, listen to "Church of the Poison Mind."
Black Money is a must for Culture Club fans. It also has to be the live version. Boy and Helen Terry singing together is like a little piece of heaven.
I remember this song from back in high school. It was a very huge “ disco transition to pop” song of the early 1980’s song. Many groups and songs were immediately “forced” into this style because of the immediate “anti-disco” stigma movement in those early 1980’s years. What a hard time that must have been for those artists. Somehow they did overcome it despite how much the disco influence was such a great movement then!
Thank you for doing more Culture Club! They and Duran Duran were my favorites back then. I'd love you to do more songs where you hear the female background singer, Helen Terry. That girl can SING. Black Money would be a great one. Church of the Poison Mind is another. OMG I was so in love with that drummer, John Moss, back then.
What an awesome song ♥️ never gets old to me 😊 it takes me back to certain places and times 👍 you know, check out " Church of the poison mind" you'll love it 😀 👋
Especially here in the states. All they wanted to talk about in his interviews was the way he dressed and his sexuality. In most interviews you can see how upset he becomes that they won’t talk about the music and ignored the other members in the band. He has walked off sets on multiple occasions after saying I’m not going to answer those questions anymore.
Hi. Love your videos on "First Time Hearing..." I know you love Gladys Knight and the Pips. If you haven't already check out this one: "GLADYS KNIGHT- THE WAY WERE - (LIVE 1974)-REACTION VIDEO." It's a solo performance by Gladys Knight that I think may bring tears to your eyes. Your guys are beautiful and have so much heart.
This song was written by Boy George for a fellow band member with whom he had a relationship when the band started gaining fame this individual broke of the relationship with Boy George fearing his lifestyle would be discovered. Many of the songs on this album were written by Boy George in an attempt to get that individual to return. There was a interesting documentary on the subject where Boy George detailed the whole story

Boy George has had a massive carreer on his own. One of my fav albums was released in 2013. Must hear and see video #1. King of Everything #2. Feel the Vibrations #3. Death of Samantha (written by Yoko Ono) the entire album is fantastic. You will not be disappointed!
Boy George has a great voice! And those 4 boys were soooo cute! 😁 Next up... " Miss Me Blind" (dance banger) or "Mistake Number 3" (lovely ballad). Long live the second British invasion and new wave!
Boy George had a good voice but he was probably more important as a role model and voice for people who didn't have one. He busted stereotypes.:) Its pop

Miss Me Blind is my absolute FAVORITE Culture Club song!!!

I was going to recommend Victims as well.

Such a good song. I think y'all will like Church of the Poison Mind by Culture Club
this is truly the best song from culture club, such a roller coaster of emotion it's amazing.
Boy George's Crying Game is a must. It really showcases his voice.
victims the best 😘his voice ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Agreed
Produced by the Pet Shop Boys too!
Yes. Brilliant song by George. Another I enjoy is Bow Down Mister.
The other two are The War Song and Everything I Own.
But this one does rank high.
I LOVE the way he sings that song
Oh yes this one too!!
You know it's the 80s when there's a badass sax solo! One of their best ever ever!
I love "Time" and "Do you really want to hurt me" but I think "I'll Tumble for Ya" is underrated and totally worth a listen.
For me, Church Of The Poison Mind is a better song than those two.
Yes, I’ll Tumble!!
I agree, I'll Tumble For Ya is such a fun song and my fave by them.
The video is fun, too.
Yeah I loved I’ll Tumble 4 Ya

One of the greatest all around pop songs ever created. From the vocals to that bassline, sonic bliss.
80s music is a great decade to relish. Vocals are authentic from that era…no autotune to fix tiny flats and sharps. Just pure human singing.
Time was definitely an old fashioned SOUL record!
