IMO, McConnell is getting something out of this situation. I don't think this shutdown is really about the wall. It's a factor, certainly, but the main reason for it is to impede the Russia investigation. That may well be McConnell's concern (He's been trying to protect Trump since Obama was in office.), or it may be something else. He bullied Obama throughout his tenure. Why would he be afraid of Trump now?

Now that you've said it, a catastrophic air crash with lots of deaths may only be the thing that forces Congress to reopen government.
Why doesn't the US have reeenacted budgets anyway? In the Philippines, it's written in the Constitution that if Congress fails to pass the budget, last year's budget will be the basis of expenditures until a new one is passed.
That's why our third world country, for all its failings, never has a government shutdown and all government employees are, by principle, always paid their wages.
Junjun Agbayani when the US was forming in its first 100 years, it was assumed that well educated, pro-American, willing citizens would always hold office. I doubt they could have ever predicted what the US looks like today. Now we have trump, a morally bankrupt man, as president. We have Mitch McConnell, a corrupt man, as senate majority leader. The only people who could open the government are trump, Nancy Pelosi, and Mitch McConnell. The government can only open if funding is arranged in the budget. Congress writes up the budget but the president needs to sign off on it, otherwise a majority of people in congress must attempt to veto him, but that requires Mitch to play along with democrats which of course would never happen. Trump is essentially holding the government hostage in order to get his wall. Finally today democrats were able to get trump to concede and open he government for 3 whole more weeks.... great....

In Australia we theoreticly could have one, we got 2 weeks out from one back in 1975 before the Queen stepped in & fired the entire government & had us vote for a new one. Very controversial move, but it's never come close to happening again since! Sometimes the available safeguards need to be enacted to make it clear that they WILL be used & stop people pushing the limits & pushing further & further & further until they finally hit pushback

Or, if that's not possible, don't expect them to show up to work anyway. Let them be able to try and earn money by doing something else.
Any federal employees categorized as Essential have to work their shifts. With essential positions a No Show can potentially be treated like an AWOL. When Air Traffic Controllers - Essential and unionized staff - went on strike Reagan fired them

She did look a little like an elementary school principal, but how many times & ways has she made her point to the press? The wall is a bad idea that most people don't want & if Trump gets ANY money for it before he reopens the government then the shutdown will become his go-to move for everything.

That fire festival comparison went completely over my head.
People invested over 25 million dollars to have a music festival on a island. But when it can time for the organizers to deliver, there not enough of the ruined tents for people to sleep in, not enough porta potties, not enough water or a way back for the people who paid thousands of dollars for tickets and airfare.

It would have cost him a billion or more dollars to so, however he purchased the WTC for a song. As it turned out, the demolition of WTC causettlement sed a 3 billion dollar insurance gain to the present owner, above what he'd made the original purchase!

Valinor still exists, just not here. But Elves who leave Middle-earth can find the "Straight Way" and still get there, and the story says that occasionally a human/mortal mariner will happen upon it. And, of course, that's where Frodo and Bilbo went (also Sam, Legolas, and Gimli if you read far enough into the appendixes)
This whole story is called The Akallabeth and is at the end of the Silmarillion---definitely one of its more readable parts!

Nancy Pelosi has impressed me lately. She used to cave in all the time to Republicans and was so weak, but she has shown a lot of strength since becoming speaker again. Trump is strengthening Democratic unity more than anything else.
