Great review. My previous laser would light up the whole room with blue dispersed light leaking out sideways. Hardly any light is escaping from this is good.
How fast can it go and how deep cut? Will it take an air assist?
I let Lightburn lapse. Is it $60 per year or lifetime purchase?

It's the first a year of updates for $60, then if you renew within some time period after the included year (I think 6 months) the renew price is 50% of the total price, so $30. . If you wait longer you're stuck paying the full $60 again for another year of updates.
My first one I paid the $40 it was back then, then I let it go like 3 years before seeing updates that I really wanted and then the price had gone up to $60 and I paid that and $30/ year thereafter on auto-renew.
There's a rumor of cnc cam in the near future, but so far it's just customers spreading that one, nothing official from the company denying or confirming its in the works...
As far as the machine questions, about 6000mm/min was the fastest I could get it to go, the acceleration rate of the nema17s is the limiting factor due to the small work area it can't get up to speed faster without faster acceleration settings then I get a stepper phase lockup a little over 6k. (Default max is 5k)
I've only tried cutting through 3mm and 5mm plywood. And if cut them both as cleanly as my 10w xtool with ais assist.
For adding air to this laser module, the m40, because of the local length needs to be 2mm away from the workpiece leaving no room to add a diy nozzle, but swapping the module out for a different one that either has a nozzle integrated or a different focal length and air assist could be added, I have another laser that fits right on the same mount, a smaller 3.5w and with air assist it's still weaker than the m40 laser without the air. I think the close distance helps the built in fan blow some of the soot out pretty well.

Hey Seth, thanks for sharing this video. Question on this unit, if I wanted to engrave on a tray I make on my cnc, does the laser go below the surface level? I make a 15” round tray with a half inch pocket and would need to set the unit on the rim of the tray so I am wondering if it would work

Yeah, I just tested that and I got a little over 1" if additional drop of the laser module below the frame is achievable with no modifications.
And with adding a little home made adapter plate, the depth could be increased even more... so your 1/2" deep pocket would definitely work with the stock machine.

@@SethCNC thank you for checking that. I appreciate it. Would you need air assist if you primarily just engrave? I appreciate all you do

@Kevin Jensen thanks for asking, now you've got me thinking of another project idea too use both the cnc and laser in one video together 😆👍

Nice video Seth. Every woodworker should have one of these little lasers. I got an Aufero Laser 1 about a year ago. Easily puts your makers mark on almost anything. I would love to have one with an offline controller, maybe battery powered also.

Thats cool! I end up mixing up which SD card is setup with files for which Machine, I guess it's Time to label them, and some color coded stickers wouldn't hurt either 😅

    Hey Seth,
I thought you touched on it, but not quite sure. Could I set the laser on top of a piece that is larger than the lasers footprint, or does it have to set between the base?

Yep, the laser drops down all the way to work perfectly for this.
Like engraving onto a large board or even a table.
