Can i suggest you to either put a slightly elevated grate under the coal to give it some air or maybe just drill couple of holes on the side, level to the coal floor, like one hole on each small side and two or three on both larger sides. That way you will ensure to always have the maximum temp from your coal, it will work just like the starter chimney you used to start the coal😉 i really enjoy your videos, i build and sell pizza ovens, wood bbq and firepits, all made of steel and firebricks. But i want to try casting some to and I’m learning from you!! Thanks!!!

Hi, I enjoyed watching your builds. On one of the videos you mentioned about possibly drilling some holes. I have a cheap one from eBay which has some holes in the center but not on the ends. I noticed the coals are way hotter closest the holes compared to the ends that do not get enough oxygen. Maybe worth you giving it a try. I will be building a super long version of this as I have an outdoor table that seats 8 people. I think it will be really cool to slice your beef soup with in and just have everybody cook their own stuff kind of fondue style. 🤤

Love it! I had drawn up plans for a nearly identical grill last year, was going to use plaster of Paris and sand as I’ve seen others use for forges but I like this mix better. Very cool to see one in use. Will have to get off my butt and make it happen now! Cheers from Canada

Shouldn’t you have some air vents?
The second version could have a raiser some kind of grill were you put the charcoal. Also the vent could control the oxygen. Think of the 4th version. Bless you.

    👍🏻
The next version you might consider making the inside width enough that the 'legs' on your rack fit in between the walls so it's not tempted to skid off (or make notches for them to sit into)
Also recipe for the garlic herb salt please!
You cannot beat halloumi cooked by Cypriots

Was hoping to buy a Criss cross style grill top at some point.
      Garlic herb salt
      - dehydrated home grown garlic (powdered)
      - dehydrated rosemary, parsley, thyme (very finely chopped)
      - salt
Blend together in a food processor.

I’m keen to make something with this method. As for bbq I used Jamie Oliver’s tip, a large lasagna tray with coals and then the shelf from your oven on top! Works a treat!!

Love it. Question though: is this material safe? does it give off fumes when it is heated? Greetings from Germany

Do i have to transfer the coals from the silver thing to the pearllight grill? Or can i just light the coals in the home made grill??

Hi, im thinking about making something like this but in a permanent place outside. Do you think perlite is suitable? Or will it absorb too much moisture and have to dry out every time before you use it? It would be covered of course but I have no place to store it inside.
Thanks for the video! you have a lot of cool stuff on the channel

It might be a good idea to use a cast iron grill grate, (Walmart about 15.00 )

So you dont need to put anything under the hibachi? The table is safe from heat?

    • @RodGibsonMusic

Perlite is an awesome insulator. You could hold your hand against the bottom without burning yourself. So yes, perlite concrete just lets a bit of heat through, depending on the thickness of the wall nd could be put directly on a wooden surface.
