    Hi, I must apologise for how long it has taken me to finally get round to writing this comment, (just over 3 years to be precise).
    Anyhow..... I had a motorbike accident and the hospital having x-rayed my hand said I'd broken a finger but said I hadn't broken my thumb and referred me to a fractures clinic stating it was either ligament or tendon damage. The appointment for the fractures clinic was 10 days later and they taped up my thumb to give it some support.
    10 days later at the fractures clinic, the specialist looking at the same x-ray said I hadn't broken my finger but I HAD broken my thumb in two places and I then had to have a thumb spica cast which I was to wear for 4 weeks.
    When the cast was removed 4 weeks later, I could barely move my thumb, as it had now been almost 40 days since I had broken my thumb. As a result of being unable to move my thumb I was told I would have to see a physiotherapist and given an appointment date for 2 weeks time.
    Not wishing to waste 2 weeks before I saw a physiotherapist I decided to search online to see if I could find any exercises that would help regain my movement in my thumb and I came across this video.
    I religiously followed all the exercises contained in this video daily until I saw the physiotherapist.
    The physiotherapist asked me to move my thumb in certain directions and I had to undertake strength tests on my thumb.
    I told the physiotherapist about watching this video as I didn't want to wait two weeks before seeing them. The physiotherapist replied that it was a wise decision and that I had good movement in my thumb and that she was going to discharge me as a result!!!! This was all down to this fantastic video, so a MASSIVE thank you from me.
    The only additional exercises the physiotherapist told me to perform, were to;
    1. push my thumb tip down onto the palm of my other hand ten times
    2. push my thumb up against the back of my other hand ten times
    3. to purchase a hard child's foam ball of around 80mm diameter and to keep squeezing this with my fingers and thumb.
    The above 3 exercises are all about retaining strength in your thumb which, combined with all the exercises in this fantastic video, gave me back full use of my thumb, which shortly afterwards had the same movement and ability to grip objects as my non-broken thumb.
    So thank you for uploading this video, as it certainly helped e recover a lot quicker than had I not watched nor followed your advice.
    Thank you.
    .

I can do all exercises in the video but some provide mild discomfort. I'm sure this will get better with time. thank you!

    Hi Michelle Thank you for these exercises- my hands already feel a bit tired afterward. I"sprained" my right hand this winter and last winter when I needed to move quite a bit of firewood. I grabbed the piece with one hand and yikes! It has been many months and it much better however I still can't bend the tip of the thumb - a little bend when I use the other hand to move it. This thumb doesn't open up into an L as much as the other side (very tight) and I can't grip anything like a cup - the whole thumb stays straight. And still sometimes I'll grab, or knock it or something and I hear click/pop as I try to make it straight again - and it is very painful. This happened a ton at the beginning (Dec) and the pain was terrible. Now it's not so often but i think partly because it is so stiff and less swollen now. Also it is more swollen than the left one. Sorry to write a lot but I'm wondering if there is something specific I could do in this situation. thank you for your help

    I currently have two wires in my thumb from a fracture in the joint above that middle crease. My doctor wants me to do active movement, so that I don’t bend the wires, every hour. I’ve been working on this for about a week and a half now but haven’t noticed much of a change. What exercises can I do that don’t involve forcing it but do more than just a wiggle?

    • @VirtualHandCare
      @VirtualHandCare  5 років тому

      Hair4Thought since you have pins it is important to ask your doctor or see a therapist about this so they can watch you do the exercises. You do not want to move too much and potentially make your pins loose which would keep them from holding your fracture together. I offer consults at virtualhandcare.com

    I'm recovering from an avulsion fracture in my thumb (skiers thumb type injury) - this is a nice set of exercises in this video.
    The biggest tip I have is to practice gripping/squeezing different sized objects - I thought I had got most of my pinch strength back through my pinch exercises until the first time I tried to carry a pint of beer in my injured hand. I then realised I'd not been doing enough exercises in different ranges of motion and different extensions of the thumb.

      @@hanmantkshirsagar6111 Hey Hanmant,
      My thumb is absolutely fine now.
      I am expecting your k-wire is removed by now, you will feel numbness for a month or so after that for 3-4 months you wont be able to grip that well but don’t worry keep doing basic gripping exercises (that is very necessary for your thumb for future or it would be stiff) after few months it would be absolutely be normal.
      And for the numbness it would be there for some time along with stiffness but it would go away
      Wishing you speedy recovery
      Regards

    I think I broke my thumb near the joint of either my distal or proximal phalanges. How do I know if I should seek treatment? It hurts but I think I still have full mobility.

      It is always good to get an x-ray if you think you broke it. That way you can get a splint if needed and heal properly.

    Hi Michelle, I fractured my thumb 6 months ago playing cricket. I have still yet to get complete movement back and struggle to bend it when my thumb is straight. Is this normal and will these stretches still help movement even though I cant complete them yet.

      @VirtualHandCare  Рік тому

      I don't know the type of fracture you had and 6 months is a long time however its never too late to start stretching and doing the exercises. Many people continue to make improvements up to a year and sometimes longer!

      Same here! Just got my cast removed today and I’m now in a split for four weeks. I take it off to shower and my thumb’s mobility is still fucked. It hurts to move still. Doc said most mobility will come back eventually but it takes time. I should’ve asked to define time, probably months to a year I’m guessing

      @@xyed5571 I can move my thumb around now, bench press, but struggle a little with lifting things over my head. Moving my thumb side to side, touching the other fingers is not a problem, I just cannot give a full thumbs up, it only extends upward so much.

    I had my k wires removed after having them for 3 weeks. It's been 5 days. Thumb is still very stiff and swollen. And hurts if i try to even push a little extra.

      It should start to loosen up as you start moving. Make sure you see a hand therapist who can show you how to move with minimal pain.

    Do you have a video on a thumb that cant make a circle ? My right thumb is able to make circles nice and smoothly. But my left thumb cannot make a circle and it skips half way. There is a pause when trying to do a circle. Then it locks, snaps and completes the circle. It feels strange. Any idea what could be causing this?

    • @VirtualHandCare
      @VirtualHandCare  2 роки тому

      I would have a doctor look at it to see what exactly is going on. There are several conditions that can make the thumb do that and not all treatment is the same.
