Hi, I must apologise for how long it has taken me to finally get round to writing this comment, (just over 3 years to be precise). Anyhow..... I had a motorbike accident and the hospital having x-rayed my hand said I'd broken a finger but said I hadn't broken my thumb and referred me to a fractures clinic stating it was either ligament or tendon damage. The appointment for the fractures clinic was 10 days later and they taped up my thumb to give it some support. 10 days later at the fractures clinic, the specialist looking at the same x-ray said I hadn't broken my finger but I HAD broken my thumb in two places and I then had to have a thumb spica cast which I was to wear for 4 weeks. When the cast was removed 4 weeks later, I could barely move my thumb, as it had now been almost 40 days since I had broken my thumb. As a result of being unable to move my thumb I was told I would have to see a physiotherapist and given an appointment date for 2 weeks time. Not wishing to waste 2 weeks before I saw a physiotherapist I decided to search online to see if I could find any exercises that would help regain my movement in my thumb and I came across this video. I religiously followed all the exercises contained in this video daily until I saw the physiotherapist. The physiotherapist asked me to move my thumb in certain directions and I had to undertake strength tests on my thumb. I told the physiotherapist about watching this video as I didn't want to wait two weeks before seeing them. The physiotherapist replied that it was a wise decision and that I had good movement in my thumb and that she was going to discharge me as a result!!!! This was all down to this fantastic video, so a MASSIVE thank you from me. The only additional exercises the physiotherapist told me to perform, were to; 1. push my thumb tip down onto the palm of my other hand ten times 2. push my thumb up against the back of my other hand ten times 3. to purchase a hard child's foam ball of around 80mm diameter and to keep squeezing this with my fingers and thumb. The above 3 exercises are all about retaining strength in your thumb which, combined with all the exercises in this fantastic video, gave me back full use of my thumb, which shortly afterwards had the same movement and ability to grip objects as my non-broken thumb. So thank you for uploading this video, as it certainly helped e recover a lot quicker than had I not watched nor followed your advice. Thank you. .
Omg your video was amazing thank you! I had wrist surgery a month ago and my thumb isn’t bending. I haven’t started PT yet but wanted to start the healing process already and this video helped my thumb stretch out and felt so good. Thank you again!

Hi Michelle Thank you for these exercises- my hands already feel a bit tired afterward. I"sprained" my right hand this winter and last winter when I needed to move quite a bit of firewood. I grabbed the piece with one hand and yikes! It has been many months and it much better however I still can't bend the tip of the thumb - a little bend when I use the other hand to move it. This thumb doesn't open up into an L as much as the other side (very tight) and I can't grip anything like a cup - the whole thumb stays straight. And still sometimes I'll grab, or knock it or something and I hear click/pop as I try to make it straight again - and it is very painful. This happened a ton at the beginning (Dec) and the pain was terrible. Now it's not so often but i think partly because it is so stiff and less swollen now. Also it is more swollen than the left one. Sorry to write a lot but I'm wondering if there is something specific I could do in this situation. thank you for your help
I'm recovering from an avulsion fracture in my thumb (skiers thumb type injury) - this is a nice set of exercises in this video. The biggest tip I have is to practice gripping/squeezing different sized objects - I thought I had got most of my pinch strength back through my pinch exercises until the first time I tried to carry a pint of beer in my injured hand. I then realised I'd not been doing enough exercises in different ranges of motion and different extensions of the thumb.

I don't know the type of fracture you had and 6 months is a long time however its never too late to start stretching and doing the exercises. Many people continue to make improvements up to a year and sometimes longer!
@@VirtualHandCare Thanks for the reply! it was a distal fracture and I am struggling to loosen up movement in the thumb even after trying stretches. these stretches have helped improve movement though, it just isn't yet 100%
Hi I have had ORIF of the right thumb surgery at the base of thumb, its been 4 weeks and the doctor has given me a splint to wear, do you think its too early to start moving the thumb?
U M I am unable to tell you whether you can start moving. That is up to your doctor and your X-ray. Did your doctor tell you to start therapy or start moving? If you are put in a removable splint they usually let you come out of it for gentle exercises.
I currently have two wires in my thumb from a fracture in the joint above that middle crease. My doctor wants me to do active movement, so that I don’t bend the wires, every hour. I’ve been working on this for about a week and a half now but haven’t noticed much of a change. What exercises can I do that don’t involve forcing it but do more than just a wiggle?
Hair4Thought since you have pins it is important to ask your doctor or see a therapist about this so they can watch you do the exercises. You do not want to move too much and potentially make your pins loose which would keep them from holding your fracture together. I offer consults at virtualhandcare.com
Keep trying the exercises in this video. I have it on my list to make another video with more thumb exercises. Could be swelling too- ua-cam.com/video/pyCH6IHRX9Q/v-deo.html

Those with hand fracture can feel uneasy/ uncomfortable when it's too cold or when waking up from bed early in the morning.
Mine is a normal fracture, no surgery is done. I m using Thumb spica for the past 3 weeks. Also Can I play sports now
Can I ask, it's been over a year since I had surgery on my game keepers thumb I still suffer from stiffness and pain can these excersizes help?
It is definitely worth trying them to see if they will help!
@@VirtualHandCare Thank you so much, could you suggest how often a week I should be doing this routine?

Experiencing most stiffness in the tip of my thumb. Advice?
Keep trying the exercises in this video. I have it on my list to make another video with more thumb exercises. Could be swelling too- ua-cam.com/video/pyCH6IHRX9Q/v-deo.html
