This game was way ahead of its time in terms of how good its graphics were. It was the best racing car game for the PS1, no doubt.
One of the five best, colin mcrae 1 & 2, gran turismo 1 & 2 and f1 97 were classics. Other good games were f1 96, wipeout 2097, rollcage, nfs 3 high stakes and many more...

What a great game! It was one of the first games that I've played on PS! It takes me back when I was 12 years old!
Remember picking this up on a trip into the city with my mates in summer '98. Had only gotten a PS1 the year before. I think the dualshock was just out as well so I bought one with the game.
The graphics, cockpit view, the sounds, the feel and learning curve of it was incredible for the time. Others will always associate PS1 driving games first and foremost with Gran Turismo. For me, it will always be this one. ♥
This was my first ps1 game . Started my passion with cars and love for the Subaru Impreza. Music gives me the fizz .

Still Remains the greatest car game I've ever played
Upon breaking up with the missus, picked up my first ever game and 1 of only half a dozen that I really got into. It took me days to get past Wellsford ( first track of the game).
I was crap but had time on my hands.
This game gave great distraction going through a break up. Still love it now at 58.
I only remember the Wellsford time, 2 .14.12.
Of coarse, in the Subaru.

I didn't have a dual shock at the time, when this came out cvg magazine had a contraption to convert your dpad into an analog stick. One of the coolest freebies I ever got with a gaming magazine!

I had this on demo disc and loved it!
As has been noted, the version being played here is not authentic to the original 1998 release. I only ever played it on PS1, but the Impreza should have the 'swishes' emulating the '555' sponsorship. What's shown is the 1999/2000 livery. By that stage, McRae had gone to Ford. Also, the other cars and initials are wrong. In the top left it has BT against a Mitsubishi Lancer, whereas he (Bruno Thiry) drove the Ford Escort WRC. Similarly, CS (Carlos Sainz) should be against the Corolla WRC, and so on. However, the graphics are so smooth on this video. Looks superb, but with all the audio and car models that we remember and love.

This game was terribly ahead of its time, think was a major battle between CMR, TOCA and Gran Turismo at the time for playstation racing franchise.
I remember getting this as a christmas present and was excited how you can see the car get damage when you crash. And then my friend got carmageddon 2...

It took me a while to realize this, but I just realized something: The pace notes in this game are backwards! Here’s what I mean:
See, the co-driver is telling you how tight the bend is, but the thing is: he’s doing it the wrong way around.
In this game: 1 is the easiest to turn, while 6 is the hardest. But that’s not how it works! It’s supposed to be the other way around.
In actual rally: 6 is the easiest to turn, while 1 is the hardest.

It was one of my first games together with gt3 and motogp 3. I owned it on ps2 tho so i couldn't save progresses. Such a nice,playable and smooth game. Been playing it on my phone last year and it was still great. Driving games never get old.

Yea.
I see you have the (inferior) v1.2 or whatever. One of the later re-releases which censored all the driver names, as well as Monte Carlo being renamed Austria for whatever reason, and the Impreza having the late 98 livery. Could be worse though. the 3rd re-release has a badly photoshopped non-liveried "Impreza 22B" to top it all off. In a COLIN MCRAE RALLY game, you can't drive Colin McRae's own car lmao.
Anyways, I completed a playthrough of the PC version recently. Had fun all the way, even in the harder stages. Definitely one of my all time favourites, and the first racing/rally game i've ever played.
The livery on the v1.2 Impreza is the 1999/2000 livery seen on Richard Burns' and Juha Kankkunen's cars during those respective seasons.
Maybe it did appear in 1999. I'm not perfectly sure about when the liveries changed. Still, apart from that which isn't a change I mind, this version of the game lacks all the real names on the score board. Only one left is Colin McRae. That, to me is a shame.
