Spain did not have pesos, they colonies had, but not Spain, we had "Escudos" and "Reales"
The Real de a Ocho, was one of the most powerful currency for more that two centuries. Accepted as currency for money transaction in many continents as far as Asia.
Piece of eight is what spain used i'm fairly certain. It's called that because you could cut it into 8 pieces and use them.
@@SergioRPerez It was more centuries. The coin form USA was the same coin until 19´s century. After that Dolar is coming spanish Real de a Ocho. Until 1920, Real de a Ocho was the main coin even in Asia, especially in China.
Regards, mate
@@SergioRPerez Ofcourse it was accepted everywhere, its precious metal. Our modern view of money is really only aplicable to paper currency onwords.
Spain didn't have colonies en america éramos territorios formales. No colonias
Just a quick note - at the end of the video, the world's top 20 most traded currencies are shown. I've had to make exceptions with the Norwegian Krone, Singaporean Dollar, Hong Kong Dollar, New Zealand Dollar, and Swiss Franc due to size constraints.

Ollie Bye 👍👍👍
Ollie Bye can you do a video about Turkic history every year?

@Ollie Bye Peso currency is this isn't coins and currency countries South America, North America, Africa.
It’s nice to see how the coins changed over history because back then there was barely any paper money
I what
No shit
Yeah without 1 country missing
1:13 was a great moment for the Spanish currency worldwide
This is fake because I don't see robux here

Hello Ollie!
Nice and interesting video!
Btw, why the USD is not shown in countries that use it, like Panama, Ecuador, El Salvador etc.?
You forgot to add Montenegro and Kosovo at the end - Euro is also used there
Honestly I got used to people forgetting us
Not _de jure_
That’s because Kosovo isn’t a nation and should not be recognised as one.
dragonrykr its because some nations say kosovo is not a nation while others say it is
Markus Antony im guessing you’re serbian
Well you use the euro without being in the Eurozone so technically it’s illegal
As an Australian, I sincerely thank you for not showing New Zealand in this video. You shall be commemorated as a hero of our nation.
Noticed this too. good to see those weirdos excluded they probably use weird hobbit money anyways
What an interesting topic! Keep up the good work man!
It was so interesting to see that currencies were much more widespread among regions before cause today it’s so divided. I never would have thought that these vastly different areas would use the same coinage before colonialism and all that.
May i point out that the design of the £1 coin changed in 2017
Love these new videos you're making. As always, ollie bye does it better than anyone else.
Magnificent video Ollie! Keep it going!
Great to see the rest of this mini-series. What will be your next project?
I'm going away soon, so it will probably be something smaller. I though maybe a simple war video such as the Peninsular War might work.
That’s a cool topic to cover. Whenever you do get back, I have a few video ideas you could find interesting. Would you consider doing video on the spread of written language scripts similar to your coinage video? Another idea is maybe trying a quick experimental video in the 360 degree video format. The last one I’ll bring up is doing a mapping video on Ancient Egypt (3150 BC - 30 BC). Surprisingly enough, I haven’t seen a whole lot of mapping videos on this topic.
@@eyuin5716 Your first suggestion is probably the most appealing of the three. Egypt might also be a good idea, but I'm not sure about the 360 degree idea. I've seen other mapping videos that do it, and it looked a bit strange. Anyway, I'll be back in September.
Alright, enjoy your break.
Amazing job!
Thank you for your informative videos!
China had the first paper money back in 1250. However, it went back to copper money in 1600s. Without a good macroeconomy management. the inflation problem in each dynasty caused severe corruptions and rebellions. That's why China changed back to stable metal money and avoid oversea trades during the Ming Dynasty. This also indirectly let China missed the industrial revolution during that critical time.
Interesting video-series. I never knew that the pound was that old!
Great job !
Danzig HD Mapper 😍😍😍😍😍
Good job!
Nice video. I’d add the currency of many French ex colonies to the French Franc/Euro system since they’re still linked to the metropolitan currencies. Same for countries that use the USD, like Ecuador
Thanks Jackso!
Very cool!!
Let me point out a mistake.
Since 1600, Japan has mostly used its own currency and has not used Chinese currency.
Even though Chinese currency was, in fact, used in Korea until 1900, Korea legally began using its own currency (Sangpyeongtongbo) in 1678. It was quite widely used.
Hello nice video looking for the next saludos
There is one mistake. Finland didn't use ruble in 1860-1817 rather a Finnish mark (1860-2002).
but the video is still great
As a coin collector, this is interesting to watch.
very good work ollie bye! I just want to say that shouldn't the rupee appear a little earlier during sher shah suri
Ehtiopia, Eritrea, Somilia, Djibouti, coastal Kenya used the Mogadishu coin till about 1857. What did they change after that which is what North Africa went to using as well? They did not have to deal with constant coin changes like other civilizations as well.
Very good
I liked it. It was interesting seeing how some colonies changed coins, and some didn't
This is good
That was quite interesting.

Spain in South-East Asia: *Moni*
Impressive work friend you are really the best
Interesting, nonetheless, in Ecuador, firstly we used the "Sucres" and at the moment, we are using the USA dollars...
Good video but you know me, I have to throw in my 2 cents (see what I did there?) about Africa. At first I thought this was just coinage but it seems to incorporate other metallic objects and paper money too. With that said you could've shown guenze, koli, and kilindi (all collectively known as Kissi pennies), Okpoho (Maillas) and you could have even included mrammou (Akan gold weights). Shell money is another one too, popular all throughout Africa and Oceania. You could've also include Mesoamerican "Hoe money"
I like your videos but I’m sorry to tell you this one is full of errors and needs many notes to clarify the actual use of the currency in each country as well as its origins. I’m gonna pick the Spanish case as an example: the dollar was invented by the Spanish, so it doesn’t appear like magic in the States. Also Spanish peso was the official currency in USA from 1785 and alongside the dollar from 1792 to 1857. Furthermore, peso was use in the so called “Spanish colonies” (even though in reality they were viceroyalties, a huge difference), but not in Spain, where the Spanish Real was used.
Also was used in Philippines, China and other asian countries. Not only the dollar have it's origins in the spanish peso, also the chinese yuan.
The Spanish Dollar or Real de a Ocho was used in many continents including The Philippines and China.
This is really interesting!
I must say I'm a bit confused... Am I to interpret that Sweden had the polish zloty up until our monetary union in 1873? Or is the gray colour something else? We definitely did not have zloty as our main currency in the 1500-1800s...
Minor inconsistencies with my home country, but surprisingly accurate.
No Cruzado, and all those variations...
Yuan,Yen,Won basically the same name in different languages.
Do the Inca Empire History
Better than first but you only marked those currencies that today are very valuable
C'mon there is Turkish Lira 😂😂 but yes it is in the list of mostly traded currencies cus of its value loss ..
no cfa franc, east african shilling, west caribbean dollar etc ?
You forgot about RS gp 2003-
So many African Nations use the USD, such as Zimbabwe.
In South America they also use the Peso.
why are the currencies in southeast asia not labeled?
Oh the Tongbao which is the Qing Dynasty currency. Also the Qing is one of those empire to impose the national haircut.
“Tong通bao宝” means currency, “Tong” means currency, “Bao” means treasure. The word began to appear in the Tang Dynasty. In fact, it was also called Tongbao after that, but it was not shown in the video because of the paper money. And Chao is paper money, such as“纸paper【zhi】钞chao”“钞chao票ticket【piao】”
The current unit, “元【yuan】”, was actually “circular圓【yuan】” at the beginning. It seems that because "圓" is not easy to write, it becomes 元 . but why is it called "圓【yuan】" at the beginning? No one can tell
That Swedish Krona looks really outdated
Hello Ollie
I have something to talk
*i can't see baht in modern time*
How about the Indian Rebellion of 1857 every day?
In the 20th and 21st centuries, you seem to have forgotten that french Guiana is still French and has always used French currency (which is the 💶 nowadays)
We once had other kinds of currency (Not Won 원) right after 1945 such as Jeon 전

Where's bitcoin?
Greece use drachmas from 1832 to 2002
for korea, on 1946 to 1965 they used huan
What is white colour?
In Brazil you skipped Cruzado, which lasted from 1986 to 1990.
Also Portugal's escudo that was the currency for a long time, Idk anything about that peseta but the escudo was the currency of a lot of Portuguese colonies
I dont want to be that guy again but, this is also wrong. Not only in borders wich get up to 200 years wrong in the new world, but also about how the dollar is used in many many countries yet they are not shown on the video with its violet color
@@samohtt the USD is used in other countries. Ecuador doesnt have a currency of its own.
Its not a matter of being called dollar, its the actual US dollar (unlike for example australian dollar
@@masmarvelous this is also wrong, because the problem is it didnt show the actual line between colonies and natives to a great extent, if theres a colony theres a currency, it cant be otherwise.
At the same time if the same indigenous group controls an area, it hard to think a part of it would use the coin and the rest dont. Clearly shiwn in the chaco region of paraguay bolivia atgentina and brasil, where the limit is greatly off most of the time
Yes

The former name of Indian coin was "Taka". Which is now the name of the currency of Bangladesh.
Interesting video, although the Real is only used in Brazil, and not the entirety of South America.
love the change 2001 when euro became official: almost whole europe switches in an instant - but still miss my german MARK - at one time in history it was one of the most powerful currencies - but inflated a lot (about hyper-inflation end of 1920s - a bread cost over 5 billion mark - the paper it was printed on was more worth as a raw material than for wasting it for print those ever growing numbers on it)
I remember my parents paid rent in German marks despite not being in Germany. :)
@@AndrewVasirov Thats odd, I don't know a point in time or other place in the world outside germany where this was ever the case - maybe back when we also colonies around the globe - but that's long before your parents (most likely) - do you may remember when or where it was?
In the 90s. I think they paid in Marks because the inflation was increasing here in Romania - so German Marks were more honest than what currency we had. I mean - it would be pretty bad for the owner to be paid in a value that can easily become meaningless in a month or so.
Finland used markka's until 2002
Portugal had Escudo before Euros
I can't wait to see future videos of Euro expanding all over Europe
Why should the whole of Europe adopt the Euro?
@@erik-ic3tp Less monetary speculation
Ecuador uses the US dollar
Not Very Correct But Nice work
You forgot to add the Egyptian Pound which was made in 1836 as coin and in 1899 it got its first banknote version and it is still used in Egypt since then.
Very impressive video,
just had to point out tho that Ecuador uses the US dollar
And Zimbabwe too
Panama and El Salvador too.
1:14 The U.S adopts the U.S dollar instead of shillings.
actually, korean 1950s currency is hwan.
Ecuador uses the dollar
Ancient Egyptians used precious metals shaped like sheep as a currency.
Ollie, is it true you are leaving youtube?😥😧😨
I'm not sure, but I'm guessing he is, since he gathered a lot of hate and criticism from his History of the World series. There was even one user I found that wants him BARRED from UA-cam just because of some inaccuracies.
wheres baht
Completely missed the golden age of Portuguese currency, when the Real was used all over coastal Africa, Arabia and Indonesia.
This is not true. Portuguese did conquer some coastal areas of the countries you mentioned, however they never brought any change so significant to completely turn over the use of their actual currencies. Arabia and Indonesia, in fact, were not very influenced by the Portuguese at all due to the quick Ottoman reaction.
What about african francs?
1:56 that moment when you realize that the European Union is basically the new Holy Roman Empire
German Industrialists after the loss of WWII planned for a 4th Reich in which Germany would control Europe in the form of Economics. That is what the EU is.
ww1 and ww2 never happens in this timeline?
Polish partitions are visible :(
Janbhu dreep ( India , भारत) fast coins raja dahir & chandragupt Maurya
No,First Indian coins were made by Vedic republic's, Mainly "Kurū" and "Panchal".
