The only thing that really makes it tough for me to decide which I’ll get, is the fact that the Rubicon has the sway bar disconnect and the Mojave doesn’t. I freaking love that button. If there was an easy way to put that in later, I’d totally go Mojave.

    • @jonman364

@@madieonmaus4290 From what I've read, it is easier (and cheaper) to add Rubicon features to a Mojave than Mojave features to a Rubicon. I may add a front locker eventually, but I'm sticking to a manual sway bar disconnect as the electronic ones tend to go bad. The wife's JKRU had quite the flashing light show on the dash when hers went bad.

@@mikebromelow8514 just drove each back to back today. Both 47k miles. Tbh the Mojave I felt the bumps more but it settled faster than the Rubicon. Think BUMP, vs bump wave. We're probably going to go with the Rubicon because honestly I like the ride better, But the Mojave was also in a little worse condition for the same price. plus a Rubicon has a higher tow rating at least for the 22s we looked at.

As a person that has been off-roading 45 years now, it is common for us to have many people out with us, with vehicles that have various degrees of equipment performance and limitations too, ranging from extreme capability to little/moderate capability. Regardless, everyone drives to the ability of their equipment and manages to get through ALL obstacles. The short coming of this video is to expect each vehicle to perform equally on a trail and taking the EXACT same line on an obstacle. A better consideration would be to alternatively say that we are simply going to go 30 miles in one direction and how a person navigates any obstacles along the way is up to them relative to how they feel as though their ride is/is not limited by any performance constraints. The fair test would be to compare notes after a 30 mile run and discuss the variations between both units. My guess is that both units have their strengths and weaknesses but are probably largely equally capable of getting the job done if allowed to play to their individual strengths and weaknesses. Then in turn the same comparable run should be done in the desert as well. My guess that in the end it should always be a coin flip where an end user needs to decide what environment represents the bulk of their off road driving and hence what vehicle spec best suits them in the end. I'd guess in the end there is probably a 90%-95% overlap in regards to identically consistent performance between the 2 different units.

Great video! Helped me decide between a Rubicon and Mojave. When you talk about setting up the Mojave for rock crawling you don't mention placing it in off road plus mode. One of the advantages of off road + is that in first gear, 4 low, the front axle uses more aggressive braking to simulate a locking axle. You pretty much have to put the automatic in manual mode 4 low, first gear, because it shifts so quickly into 2nd gear. Still not a good as a locking differential, but better than not having the brake lock differential active.

Would enjoy seeing a TRD Off-Road take the same lines as you took with these Gladiators. I am honestly surprised there was not a more even result over the rocks. Being high centered and or caught up should have the same outcome regardless of the front lockers. Push/pull work great going up something or through something as long as you are not high centered. I have had situations where a front locker would have been nice. But now that I have my TRD, never been an issue as CC figures it all out in a controlled manner.

I wouldn't go with the Mojave over the Rubicon even though I live in the desert. My son wants a razor for that high speed stuff. I've raced dirt bikes and had lots of wreck and I'm well past that stuff. I enjoy cruising through the desert and seeing new sights. Racing through it you'll miss most of it just because you're having to concentrate on not hitting the next obstacle. I enjoy the sights and fun ride much more then a white knuckle crash test. So it's Rubicon all the way.

Fantastic video. Rubi all day- way easier and less expensive to add the suspension from the mojave to a rubi than to add the lockers, lower t case, and sway disco of the rubi on a mojave. Of course I own (and love) a Rubi- your mileage may vary.

All just depends on location. I'm in Florida trail running through wildlife areas and forests, Mojoave made most sense for me. Jeeps will always hold value, maybe will go with Rubicon in a couple years.

I'd like the diesel on the Mojave, OR them to bring a 4Xe on the Gladiator. LOVEd my Rubicon 4Xe... But I need cargo room, and I was hoping this would be the year I'd be able to get one, I may just have to go for a 3.0 DIesel Rubicon if I can find one.

Neither made it up the first line on the razor rocks. Regardless of the lockers, both successfully navigated the rocks with a different line. Not sure why the comment was made about the front locker when both high centered.

Thanks for the fun video. After the pandemic, I suggest comparing those 2 awesome trucks on some real desert roads, Saratoga Road, Ibex Road and Harry Wade Road, just south of Death Valley NP. Maybe try the sections posted with deep sand warnings. BTW, have driven my stock 2020 2-door Wrangler Rubicon out there, so they are reasonably doable, before the deep sand sections, which I avoided.

    I have a 2021 Mojave.
And I agree, it should have a HEMI !!!
But I still like it a lot.
But if and when the 392 HEMI becomes available in the Mojave I will trade up.
And mine is a manual but the next will be an auto.

I won't be rock crawling, then again I won't be jumping my 60K truck. BUT for general off road 4x4 use make mine the Rubicon. Since they are both the same price and you get a front locker and crawler transfer case in the Rubicon i think its a better bang for a very expensive buck.
What I would like is a rear locker and maybe a limited slip front axle, regular transfer case in the Willys edition.

  • @EMTBTroy

Rubicon is great on paper but if you're doing any serious off-roading and rock crawling, a 2 or 4 door Wrangler Rubicon is a far superior choice. Jeep- just give us the best of all worlds- Hemi Mojave with front lockers and (optional) 4:1 transfer case! Now that's a truck people would pay 70 grand for!

10:55 "and that matters...when you don't know how to drive." Seriously, both models had issues and had to take a 2nd line, front locker had nothing to do with it.

It seems like World Slowest Drag Races should be done slightly downhill on a paved surface. A lot of that 4:1 vs 2.72:1 debate is based on how well it crawls down obstacles without the brakes, not just how it goes up. It seems like removing potholes and other major interferences with the test would help compare vehicles that are more different, which might help with strange results like the truck WSDR that happened a month ago where the results didn't really match the driving experiences of the trucks. Just a thought, love the videos!

IMO, the Mojave is trying to turn the Gladiator into something it isn't. A solid front axle, V6 truck just isn't a desert runner to me. The Rubicon is how the Gladiator is supposed to be, especially given equal pricing.

I think you could just get a Ruby and gear it differently and maybe upgrade the shocks. Then you’d have the best of both worlds.
