I want to clear things up... since once again, lots of people who know nothing about Jeeps, or the gladiator are getting all mad. The Jeep Gladiator ESS (auto stop/start) does not use a BSG (Belt Start Generator), nor does it have a secondary starter (Which many people have said in the comments..) It uses the main starter every time (however it is built stronger than a standard starter). I’m aware a lot of people did not know that, hence why I mentioned it. Also this is why I find it funny that people tell me I’m “dumb or don’t know what I’m talking about”.
Secondly, I’m not “crying about fuel economy, it’s a Jeep bro”. I’m giving a real world review since hundreds of articles about the Gladiator during its release said to expect 18-22 mpg... so sure, follow and listen to the articles If you want, or get feedback from an everyday person who keeps it real.
yes you can get “decent fuel economy aka 18-20” if you drive like a grandma. But if you drive “normal” with somewhat decent acceleration then it doesn’t do well.. of course I’m going to drive normally and get up to speed unlike the 85 year old in a Buick.. even with stock tires (33s), I got 16 mpg on a 400 mpg trip ranging from 50-75 mph.
And finally, the steering seems to react better with the new Falcon Shocks, possibly the Rubi Fox shocks were valved too soft and allowed the front end to float around.
Thanks and have a great day!

@MoneyPit Jku depends on the hull aluminum or fiberglass a fiberglass boat could weigh 3000+ pounds minus the trailer.. depends on the batteries u use also alot of the lead batteries for boats are 120 pounds for each one.. n alot of anglers has 3-4 so thats 500 pounds more... not including all the tackle n what not inside of it aswell so it could be upwards of 4000 plus pounds... rather have a diesel to tow anyways thats what they are used for in the beginning with good low end torque... and the gladiator looks ugly tbh atleast in my eyes but everyone is not me either lol
i forgot about the motor n extra electronics for the boat that are added aswell... it all builds up

    • @joshualee6765
      @joshualee6765 5 років тому +1

@MoneyPit Jku alot of bass pro's has lead batteries n are roughly 120 pounds n has 4 or u can go for the lighter option with is the lithium batteries which are about 60 pounds in weight... they prolly use the electronics and the trolling motor nonstop where u didnt...
i do know tho that lunkerstv said his skeeter boat was 3400 pounds minus the tackle included... so idk if thats with the trailer or not... dont quote me on that either... so my numbers could honestly be vague n wrong actually lol people make mistakes afterall!

Tony Salami all these fiat comments sound so ignorant. Fiat owns Jeep, yes but they don’t make, design or produce Jeeps anymore than Volkswagen does Bugatti. It’s just a financial thing. Companies buy out other companies all the time. If anything fiat probably steals from Jeep/dodge/ram more than the other way around.

I’m torn between a Gladiator Sport S and a Tacoma TRD Off Road. Both with a manual gearbox.
My main issue with the Jeep is that there doesn’t seem to be a way to add a locking rear differential to that model. It has a limited slip, but I need a rear locker for what I plan to tackle. The Tacoma TRD comes with one as standard. Not only that, but I’ve heard mixed impressions with the 6-speed in the Gladiator, not that the Taco’s is much better since people seem to love it or hate it in the Toyota’s case.
Another issue I have with the Gladdy is the tow rating. With the 6-speed it maxes at 4500 pounds. Granted that is fine with what I plan to tow (lawn mower and four wheeler, possibly kayaks later on down the road) but the Taco is rated at 6400 pounds with its manual. Honestly both trucks have the wrong engines for towing since the 3.5 GR and the 3.6 Pentastar both have no torque below 3000 RPMs (I’ve used both engines in different vehicles but I’ve only drove the Taco with a slush box and I hated it) I won’t be towing but once or twice a month so I’m fine with it.
In addition... I’m horribly worried about the 3.6 Pentastar’s reliability. I work in parts and I’ve sold a metric crap ton of cooling system components for those engines over the past 8 years. By comparison, I rarely ever see issues with Toyota’s GR engines; they are pretty much bullet proof these days, even the older generation from the mid 00s seem to be trouble free for the most part.

@@OrtadragoonX I got the middle infotainment, 7 inch Uconnect. I have the limited slip, hard top, 8 speed auto and the popular equipment package that has the remote start. I couldn’t be happier with it. That first weekend I took the doors and roof off, it’s like nothing else around. Love it, as far as reliability, I got a 7 year 75,000 bumper to bumper warranty at that price. I hope it doesn’t break, but if it does I’m not going to be shelling out to fix it. I also think the Gladiator isn’t here to stay. In a decade or so I think these will be really desirable trucks

  • @ericmann5804
    @ericmann5804 Рік тому +2

I agree that I hate auto engine stop feature, but not for oil pressure like you stated. The 3.6 engine calls for 0w20 synthetic oil. Synthetic clings to the engine more than well enough to provide instantaneous protection from a stop, especially when the engine is at temperature.
I totally agree with hating the auto start stop, and it shouldn’t be a switch required after EVERY start, but oil protection should not be a concern.

Great thing about buying a vehicle is that a person as you said can modify or add after market products to their vehicle. That's a good thing because when people see that there is a need for products that would improve performance. Someone comes along and creates it. The things we may see as negative can in turn be a positive outcome ( opportunity ) for someone else.

Use a cable lock. 2 dirtbikes fit in a Gladiator bed, just like a Subaru Baja's tinier bed. 8' beds aren't generally needed on a small truck if you can use some brain cells. The short depth makes it easier to reach into, especially after lift. For more space/payload, pull a trailer, or put long items on a sturdy roofrack. Harbor Freight offers a folding trailer with around 1800lb payload. It takes up about the same footprint in my garage/driveway as a naked motorcycle.

Hi Ben. Thanks for your video.
I purchased the Gladiator Rubicon in early July and have put over 6k miles on her. I can relate to several of your issues with the Jeep. One thing you mention is the MPG. I average 18 in 2WD. I live in rural Vermont...lots of hills and slow speeds. We also have ethanol free fuel up here, so that may be the difference.
You're absolutely right about the storage (or lack of). I have to remind myself, that it's a Jeep. My prior Jeep was a 1982 CJ-7 which had even less. I didn't buy this for the storage. I bought her because she's a Jeep truck.
The auto-stop feature really does suck. There's lots of stop and go traffic in Vermont. You'd think they'd make this feature with a bit more intelligence. Don't stop every 20 feet and shut off the truck for a second or two. I did have the same issue with my Honda SUV prior to the Jeep though.
I do wish that you could disable the auto shut-off and turn it ON if you wanted to. One thing I wanted to add to your list is the wifi is HORRIBLE. It works infrequently. I have an iphone which is always set to pick up wifi. 9 times out of 10, I'll look at my phone and it will be on LTE (4 bars) vs using the Jeep's wifi.
Thanks again, Ben, for your video. I'll be sure to subscribe and look out for future videos.

after just watching your video, I've noticed you have the Rubicon. I've got the 2020 Gladiator Sport. Mine is the 6 speed manual trans with 373 gear ratio and with that setup on the highway, I get over 20 mpg. I've got over 18,000 miles on mine and I really have no complaints and I will not have an automatic trans. because I can replace a clutch pressure plate and trans much cheaper than the automatic trans. I have pulled multiple length trailers as big as my tandem axle lowboy trailer and with the braking capacity of this Jeep set up and manually gearing down. I really have no issues with stopping keeping in mind. I have driven tractor/trailers, knowing a good stopping vehicle vs. a bad stopping vehicle with trailer. I am not up on all the computer additions on these new vehicles such as bluetooth, etc which I do not use. I would prefer a good CD player or Cassette player or even a better radio than Jeep has. The steering issues you have complained about in your video can be altered depending on the profile and compound of the rubber tires you are running. Your bigger mud tires have a tendency to flex more than your standard AT tires.

I wouldn't worry about the oil issue and here's why. The engine is only off for a few seconds. The oil, even when hot, is not going to run all back into the pan that fast, so you still have oil on all moving parts. Modern oil is also "sticky", it tends to leave a film for quite some time. And 40-60psi of oil moves pretty good.

I went from a 2018 JLUR Wrangler into a 2021 JT Rubicon Gladiator. Differences that I have noticed so far is :
    1. Smoother ride up front (longer wheelbase)
    2. The engine cooling fan isn’t nearly as noisy.
    3. Same Alpine 8.4 stereo, but the subwoofer seems to be MIA in the Gladiator. It’s buried behind the rear seats as opposed to the Wrangler’s rear cargo area. Not nearly as dynamic.
    4. Almost without saying: the longer Gladiator chassis means longer turning radius. Not quite as easy to position in a parking space.
    5. The Wrangler engine (same 3.6L Pentastar) seemed to warm up mount ch faster than the Gladiator does. All this being offered, I am still feeling pretty positive about switching vehicles. I loved my Wrangler, but appreciate the extra utility offered by the Gladiator.

2dr Gladiator would be the way to go. Yes less room, but more offroad capability while still being a truck. This 4dr gladiator is a compromise between a Wrangler (for offroading) and a truck. Unfortunately, as a compromise, it doesn't meet both worlds at its best...its not good for offloading, and it's not as good as other trucks on the market..plus it's expensive..To me, its rather failing its purpose when you look at the whole picture.

I am 2 weeks into my Rubicon Gladiator. I agree on most points. I ordered mine and though I added almost everything, I ditched the radar collision crap. Wife had a Tundra with it and I hated it and it was constantly under recall.
The space gripe is just silly. Ya have a bed.
I’d say the two most glaring things I notice is steering characteristics and gas. I came to this from a 2010 JKU rubicon. The steering takes a whole lot to get used too. I still don’t think I’m there. Yeah, gas sucks. I’m getting average 14mpg. There’s a flip side though. This vehicle smokes my last ruby on speed and power. No comparison. I upgraded my air and exhaust on the old ruby and this stock set up is so much more powerful. I really think the gas has more to do with me and how I’m driving it. Just not used to having so much pep. I’ve actually told buddies this thing is probably faster than a Jeep should be. If I still feel that way after swapping to 35s remains to be seen.
Overall though? I love it. No regrets. Just maybe some tweaks down the road which is always baked into the cake for all jeeps.
That auto stop thing is bullshit. That’s gotta go.
    Hope this helps.

Lets not forget the kind of downpayment and credit score needed to make it financially sound for most of us lowly people to even own just a stock version of the stock gladiator or even a jl wrangler for that matter.

I was just thinking today, as I looked at the prices online, "Man, they are just pricing so many old customers out". I remember my 1st Wrangler was a 1994 and about $14,100. Even my 2014 Wrangler Willy's Wheeler was only $31,000. Not paying $50,000 for this!

@@cowboygeologist7772 Early TJs were still available for under $10K US new. My 1995 YJ had a base MSRP of under $9K US. I was out the door for about $12K US with pwr steering, reclining front seats, back seat, carpet, hardtop w/fulldoors and defroster, hvy-duty alt/batt, 4WD, 2.5L/5spd...and no stereo. Simple Jeeps like that just aren't offered anymore. It was almost perfect for having a reliable offroader. 30" mudders and a winch made it quite capable offroad with the antiswaybar and trackbars disconnected. Lunchbox lockers for a few hundred $$ could make those little Jeeps claw over all kinds of stuff on a budget.

Almost NO new vehicle seems financially sound. Depreciation hit. It's not generally an appreciating asset. Electric folding scooter/bicycle, Uber/Lyft apps, and a transit pass.

It is pricey compared to other midsized trucks, I did notice the tracking drift at highway speeds, definitely something to be aware of. I absolutely loved my JKU RUBICON, I'm hoping to love the Gladiator as well. I'm going from a 5.7 hemi to the Gladiator. Yeah I know, two totally different rigs. On highway mileage I seriously avg. 23mpg and 17 to 18 mpg with the hemi. Probably definitely not gonna see this with Gladiator if the numbers work out today. Great honesty and seriously practical review! Not the oh the turn signal clicks too loud, oh I'm so close to my passenger type stupid comments. It's a jeep not a luxury Land Rover, or a full size truck. Although the prices are! 😆 thanks for a great review!
