he Marantz home theater receivers have always been priced just a little higher than some other competitors that at first glance might have similar specs. But if you take a deeper dive under the hood or even just look at how much they weigh and their build quality, you’ll understand why they are so well respected by home theater enthusiasts. These units continue their tradition of making fantastic sounding gear that has both all of the current up to date tech for the modern home theater and that classic warm, Marantz sound.

I love the plain look of these and at the same time loaded with so many options! Marantz rocks
Thanks, yes they rock!
What does it have over the 7015?
I bought the Cinema 70 a month ago and paired it with Wharfedale diamond 230's (I live in a 2 bed flat) and I love what I'm hearing. So can't even imagine how good the 40/50 are going to sound like. Yes I wish that small porthole was bigger but that's my only criticism, the build quality is really good so I know I'm set for many years to come
Great setup! Thanks for sharing!
Your neighbors must also enjoy the added fidelity
@@Ginger30161 🤣 they're absolutely loving the experience
I love Marantz. This is a great review of all the info. It seems like this approaches the capability of separates which is really cool. Will this need quite a bit of space to not get too hot in a cabinet?
Thanks! We tested it out in the open but yes, it could get warm in a tight enclosure. Thanks for watching
I just got the cinema 60
And I am
Happy with it!
Great to hear! Enjoy!
Another exceptional review from Audio advice. You guys are top notch. Are there any rumblings on a 8015 replacement.I really need the 13 channel of processing but I think the new cinema series design is gorgeous. I would love too see it carried over to an 8015 replacement
Thanks very much! We agree and hope there is a Cinema 30 coming, but we have not heard any rumblings on it yet. You just have to think they would do it though
I'm the same here in as much that I have a 7.1.4 setup. My four Atmos speakers are in place but they are not connected yet as my present AV amp is the venerable 7.1 Denon AVCA11XVA a cracking model with high quality two channel sound. This Denon model doesn't have a tuner hence the term amp as opposed to a receiver. Models destined to the UK from manufacturers like Denon and Marantz tend not to include tuners on their premium versions, but as I have a separate tuner it doesn't bother me. I was looking at the Marantz 8015 but i'm now going to wait for the (hopefully) eventual replacement in this new Cinema series. Apart from the Cinema 40 not being an eleven point one or two capable model my present AV amp is 140 watts (the same as the 8015) whereas the 40 is 125 watts. Over here in the UK the Cinema Series is also available in premium silver like my present AV amp, although not the AMP10 and AV10, they are only available in black. Anyway here's looking forward to a (possible / probable) 8015 replacement such as a Cinema 30 or 20.
Having up to 4 subwoofer outputs is a game changer in this price range. I've always loved Marantz sound and build quality.
Yes, even the Cinema 50 has it which is great. Thanks for watching
You can just get a minidsp 2x4. Or just about any rca splitter if you are on a budget.
@@vishaalgargi True, but a Mini DSP just adds more complexity and circuitry to the system. It used to be the only way to get 4 subs integrated into a HT without spending $15k or more. Having 4 independent subwoofer outs built in to a receiver or processor is a much more elegant way to handle it.
@@martybrazill7935 minidsp is not really that complex. Its technically a rca splitter but with inbuilt processing which enables the user to tune the input to his liking. Also i think minidsp is overpriced for what it is. Rca splitter can do the job too since we are gonna take input from the receivers sub pre out which already applies the necessary LPF and with the help of splitters we can feed that same lpf signal from receiver to multi subs. Mini dsp is for those who want to manipulate/tune the original signal to their liking. For example it is very useful for applying additional filters and for boosting specific range of frequencies db level. IMHO a simple rca splitter is more than enough to feed multiple subs.
And yes dedicated multi sub pre outs are a good thing but i only wish that it doesn't come with a premium since a splitter can essentially do the same thing and get me my results.
Thanks for the review! As a fellow dealer, I can confirm that the Marantz CINEMA 40 is an exceptional home theater speaker system that delivers an immersive and high-quality audio experience for movies, music, and other content. The system includes four satellite speakers, a center channel speaker, and a powerful subwoofer, all of which are designed to work together seamlessly to create a dynamic and engaging soundstage. The speakers are made from high-quality materials and feature a sleek, modern design that looks great in any home theater setup. The CINEMA 40 is also easy to set up and use, making it a great choice for anyone looking for a premium home theater audio system. We highly recommend the Marantz CINEMA 40 to anyone looking for a high-quality and reliable home theater speaker system.
Thanks for sharing! We really enjoyed reviewing it!
I've had a Marantz for years, and I love their reliability and how they sound for the price.

Absolutely LOVE the new design!
Glad you like it!
It’s the design on the inside that really matters.
It’s the most beautiful face plate on the market right now in my opinion
@@davemccague222 it’s true- we all have different priorities.

As Kylo Ren says in The Last Jedi: MORE!!!!!!! Love this Cinema line of receivers from Marantz. The 40 looks superb!
Thanks!
I’m planning to get it for my birthday this year.🎉
That will be a great birthday! 🎉
Thanks for the update! Not sure where my money is going. Cinema 50 or 40. Have Atmos setup, but want crank out every tiny bit of my Heresy IV. Driving them with a Yamaha 2080 now. Marantz model 40n on top of my system is the better way to go?

Awesome review
Thanks very much!
Been waiting for a Cinema 40 review.
Loving mine so far. That Oled display portal is so sharp and clear. Also made in Japan, more power and rear plate copper mount screws. Is it really worth 1k more than the 50? I do not think so for most folks. But the 40 does have unique features and more power.
Well said. It will totally come down to your needs. Thanks for sharing!
Does it have the copper plated chassis?
I’ve heard it has better bass than the 50. The 50 I’ve heard the bass was tuned way down
Great video I already own a SR8015 and am hoping there will be a direct replacement, maybe cinema 30?
Thank you, we hope to see that as well, but have not heard anything about it, but it sure seems like its the logical next one. Thanks for watching
I would be curious to hear how the processing is between both when you run an external amplifier. Is the Cinema 50 better off taking that $1000 to external amplification?
Yes, that would be a good option, same DAC in both. Thanks for watching
Have you done a comparison listening test with the Denon AVR-X4800H? The back panels look almost identical. So do the internals. I realize the HDAM's will change the sound on the Marantz some but it looks like these share a high percentage of parts and the Denon is 1,000 less. Thanks
We have not, the 50 is probably more similar as the 40 weighs about 15% more than the Denon, which is the better amp section. Thanks for watching
Can you tell me if the on screen display will also display speaker layout and enabled channels? On my old receiver I find this particularly handy when figeting with sound modes. This might pull me towards the 40 over the 50. Because of the larger display behind that flip cover.
The on screen you see on your TV will, but we need to check and make sure it shows the layout. Most receivers just show the incoming signal on the front panel
@@AudioAdviceI’d love to know this as well. If you can record video of the OSD even better!
I love Marantz.
Thanks for sharing!
I have been looking for some time. Thought i found a good one in the Emotiva BasX MR1. But no 2.1 HDMI made me pick the Marantz. So i am currently waiting for my Marantz.
We hope you enjoy it, thanks for sharing
@@AudioAdvice I think i will love it. It will be my first time with Marantz. I will be adding Jamo D500 Surround system 7.0 and i am thinking about getting 2 M&A X15 Subs.
@@AudioAdvice So i´ve changed my system a bit. I am currently waiting for a 7.1 S150 M&K THX Ultra2 with 1 Dominus Subwoofer which will arrive sometime early next month.
I will pair it with the Marantz cinema 40 and the Panasonic UB9000 using projector and a 100inch transparent screen. I will keep the D500 set for my game room. And i am adding some crown power amps to my LCR S150 and let the Marantz deal with the four surrounds.
It will be good to know if it will be able to do everything that Dirac live can without limitations. I know it will come with a price, but I hope that Dirac allows the consumer to purchase the Dirac live that suits them.
That is a great question, we should know in a couple of months
You sure the Cinema 40 and 50 have aluminum front plates...? Another very popular reviewer stated that it was plastic...
Great review and comparison but this is a 7000 series AVR that used to cost $2,000 not that long ago and was on sale for $1,300 when a new model came out. Sure, it jumped in price to $3,000 and now $3,500 but it would be a phenomenal product at $2,000.
It also drops to 75 watts with 7 channels which the 5000 series that cost $800 didn't. Sure, it offers Dirac but you have to pay for it.
yep, new naming structure, little design refresh und huge price premium. I say NO
The Cinema 40 drops to 87.5 watts at 7 channels driven from 125 watts, 2 channels driven (Marantz 70% Guarantee) That is still a lot of RMS Watts power. In the real world when would all 7 channels be fully driven at the same time? Remember going from 50 watts to 100 watts RMS is only 3dB change in (SPL) sound pressure level so the difference is negligible to really worry about it. It has pre-outs anyway if one wants to add more power one day.
@@euphorichaggis8486 You can't use the 70% guarantee on the 7000 series. All the 7000 series have shown 75 watts in 7ch and in all honesty the 5003 and 5014 matched or beat the 7000 series in terms of power in benchmarks making them the better purchase at 1/2 the price. The line as a whole averages 70%, a particular model doesn't have to.
As for power, if it can only deliver 75 watts with 7 channels in 8 ohms, how much will it deliver to your LCR which may require 2-4 ohms in some frequencies? It's much harder to drive 4 ohm loads in multi-channel. There's a reason people use 300 watts just for 2 channel or toroidals that outmuscle the Cinema 40.
What about bursts where the scene is quiet and then the F-14s pop into scene at 100db in Top Gun? Now, it's all relative to price. This AVR at $2,000 is great, at $2,500 it's priced right.
In fact, if I lived in Europe, I would pick the 7015 at $1,500 (although it only has 1 HDMI 2.1).
i would be interested in a 2.0 stereo HIFI againts A 8012 as for music mine sounds good but my 7012 sounds even better as i hardly use for surround anyway
This one is probably overkill for your needs then if you barely use surround.
How do i know what one is for me.
I just need a sound home receiver that has HDMI connections for the lg c1.
Eark is what i am after.
My past onkyo acts weird from 2015. Think it sound pretty good. No hdr thou. PC port doesn't offer 4k ether for some reason. Makes a tick sound.
Second hdmi slot for game capture i guess. Any point in putting speakers in another room for your tv.
Please reach out to our team at www.audioadvice.com for the best advice. You may not need something this sophisticated and we could save you some $$.
Do you think there would be an audible difference between the Cinema 40 & 50 if pre-outs are used with identical external amplifiers?
That is a great question. When we were looking into these we discovered both use the exact same Analog Devices DAC. There may be a very tiny difference due to the bigger power supply in the 40, but for your application, the 50 should be fine
When watching movies does the Cinema 40 also have the warmer sound and deeper bass compared to the Cinema 50 or do they both sound the same in movies?
The Cinema 40 has a better amp section. The difference would be apparent in both movies and music.
nice unit
Thank you
Hi @audioadvice please advise i want to buy Marantz cinema but i am confused to buy cinema 50 or 40? i will use my current speaker setup is 5.1.4. As for HDMI 2.1, i just need 3 HDMI . As you are the expert, looking forward for your response. Thank you
Hi there, chat or call with our team of experts at audioadvice.com and they can help you pick what is the very best for your situation. Thanks!
Hello all. I'm seriously thinking of going for the 40. If I add a 3 channel amp for the front 3 will the 40 automatically run the rest of my speakers in a 7.4.4 set up? Newbie here 😁
Yes, see this page from the manual manuals.marantz.com/CINEMA40/NA/EN/DRDZSYrjomlmpo.php# We hope if you decide to purchase a Cinema 40 you will get it from Audio Advice to support our channel and small business. Thanks for watching
What is maximum bandwidth on 8K inputs and outputs. Is it full 48gbs? or still 40gbs like the others.
That is not in the specs. What is your use case where you need that? Thanks for watching
Hmm...
Because of the analogue inputs and the additional bigger display (behind the Blend below), I think I go with the Cinema 40 instead of the 50.
Sounds like a great plan!
Hi, if I used a separate amp to power the front channels will the pre outs receive processing from Dirac or will dirac abilities be lost?
No, you will still have all the Dirac advantages! Thanks for watching
@@AudioAdvice brilliant thanks.
How much would you pay for a fully functional and reconditioned Marantz 1520 receiver from 1979? There is one available locally and I may pick it up for a piece of history if it’s a good deal for what they are asking.
You could check out sold items on eBay to get a sense for the value. The even earlier ones were the better ones though. Thanks for watching
If my plan is to use a separate power amp (MM7025), would you still recommend the 40 over the 50 for stereo performance?
No, they have identical DAC's. The difference is the amp section. You will be fine with the 50 and MM7025. Thanks for watching
I have a onkyo receiver paired with an emotiva amp, the emotiva puts out 125w per channel. I currently have my front stage speakers connected to the emotiva and all others connected to the onkyo. When I upgrade to the cinema 50 would you suggest that I connect my front stage speakers to the cinema 50 and connect the other speakers to the emotiva amp? Also should I get a cinema 50 or 40?
My setup is an 5.2.4
@@AudioAdvice Do they share the same DAC as the Cinema 70?
@@ebenezerc42I've done exactly as you intended. I went for the cinema50 and used the emotiva basx A3 power amplifier, (125watts all channels driven) to power my front stage (LCR), leaving the rest of my channels 2: surround (LR) and 2: front heights (LR) and 3: subs connected to the Marantz. if using external amplification in this way then no need to go for the cinema40 as you've achieved comparable output performance at less cost (over $1000.00). Stick with the cinema50 if you're going to use external amplification to drive your LCR.
I just wanted to ask will you guys be posting a review of the fellow Marrantz, stable mate, Denon and their A1H…
We should have the A1H video out in the next two weeks. Thanks for watching
@@AudioAdvice cool, I will be waiting to see how that one reviews, before I buy anything, or even make Denon my final choice, for a 2.1 AVR, where I could end up waiting for a year or two more as well, assuming my current integra 5.4 continues to work from last year… but I really want more power to power a full 6 height speakers, with enough power to power a front stage, with surrounds, and book shelf speakers, or a 7.2.6 set up…
@@AudioAdvice hey I also want to ask, does the a1h come with an FM/AM Antenna for I just saw someone claim the a1h, is an AVC, with no AM/FM antenna… so I just want to get confirmation is the A1h, an AVR, with an Am/FM antenna, or is it just an AVC
@@AudioAdvice okay, I will now be getting an a1h, so I will be curious what you guys think of how it sounds, for someone with a 7.2.6 speaker layout, with enough speakers to probably go to a 9.2.8 though I know. That wil not happen to this receiver, so I will hope that the 7.2.6 layout works, and sounds great, when compared to an Integra 5.4 from 2022, I think…. I’m not looking for a major improvement, I am just looking for better bass, for movies, and gaming… I am also hopeful that the receiver will work with at least 1 2.1 device.
Are the housings of the 40 and the 50 the same?
The 50 is bigger.
How well does the Cinema 40’s ability to assign an unused channel for bi-amp-ing work?
Here is a link to the owners manual that shows the possible configs, start on page 58 file:///C:/Users/leons/Downloads/CINEMA40_NA_EN_30012023.pdf
Why you not showing a littlebit the Bottom screen? It is also a big difference to he Cinema 50
That's a good point. Thanks for the feedback.
Marantz AV processor setup or marantz cinema 40 good
Thanks for sharing
I have been waiting for this review. I currently have a Denon AVR-X4500H but want to upgrade. I will have a separate amp for my mains and another for my center and surrounds. The avr will only power the atmos channels. I was hoping the cinema 40 was going to provide a lot more benefits over the cinema 50. But it looks like I will be able to go with the cinema 50 and use the saved money for the DIRAC upgrade.
That seems like a great choice! Thanks for watching

cinema 40 vs SR 8015.. which one to choose?
We have some insight at the end of this written article you can find here www.audioadvice.com/marantz-cinema-40-home-theater-receiver Thanks for watching
The 8015
Pros
Toroidal transformer
more channels (11 vs 9)
possibly lower DAC following fire at AKM factory but Cinema 40's may share DACs with Cinema 50, 60, and 70 which is a $1,300 AVR.
better power (there's no bench of the 40 but we can assume 100 watts with 5 channels and a dip to 75 with 7 based on the 7000)
Cons
1 HDMI
3 year warranty vs a 5 year warranty
fewer subs (2 vs 4)
No support for Dirac (but you have to pay to get it)
The 8015 is 30% overpriced and the Cinema 40 is 40%. Someone bought the 7015 (same as Cinema 40 just different look) in Europe for $1,500 so you do the math 😀
So the cinema 40 does have more bass than the 50?!? That’s what I wanted to know. I’ve heard other say the same. Also, does this have the same handshake the 50 has with the Xbox series X?!
Yes. It should. Reach out to our team of experts at audioadvice.com if you want to get more detailed info and we'll be happy to help you out!
From another review on the 50 ..it was stated that the sound quality was no better than the model it replaced...and if the 40 has same chip as the 50 why the testing in Japan on the 40 for sound? I think you have a new look and new features and added cost for when Dirac comes on board ...not really worth the upgrade since it doesnt sound any better than the models it is replacing...so these new models are just to get the latest upgrades ...but not for sound quality ...I hope the AV 10 processor is an improvement in sound over the models it is replacing and not just some pricy upgrades.
The 40 to our ears sounded outstanding. Thanks for watching
@@AudioAdvice must be the power supply doing a better job when in stereo mode I have external power supply separate amp for 12 channels So looking at the DAC for sound improvements I have ESS DAC in my Oppo 205 with my my Marantz sr 6011 and can’t see doing a upgrade until Marantz come out with updated chip set over what I have now

Support for ANCIENT type connections is a score for the 50 ... as I do - not - want them onboard my new-gen receiver/processor.
With the use of external power amps... the 40 has no advantages at all. An extra zone? /duh
Yes, if you used separate power amps there is no advantage. Thanks for watching.
How is 125 watts robust?
Many companies throw around crazy wattage numbers to make their products seem great. However, the top manufacturers tend to just shoot it straight. Most people are listening in home theater rooms to sub 20 watts of power on each channel 95% of the time. There will be quick periods of burst up to higher but in most cases a truly clean 125 watts with low distortion can produce more spl that most people need. But to your point, it all depends on how the wattage is measured. Some companies will boast big numbers like 300 watts per channel but it is at 2 channels driven with a high distortion which is like the equivalent of 50 watts per channel in a receiver like this one. Thank you for pointing this out as its a very misunderstood number that is highly manipulated by many manufacturers so its worthy probably of its own video and many people might see 125 as really high whereas others might see 300 as really high (and also depends on how many Ohms you are talking about).
@Audio Advice I love the Marantz Cinema 40 and the only reason I will not purchase it is because of its 125 per channel wattage. If it's wattage was at least 140 per channel I would reconsider my line of thinking. I am not primarily a theater enthusiast, but a stereo listener and I have not had a amplifier below 150 watts per channel except for my first stereo purchase.
"It sounds warmer than the Cinema 50." Is that a good thing?
Yes, units that have a bright, edgy, shrill sound may be impressive for 5 minutes but grate on your ears over time.
@@AudioAdvice I have a Cinema 50 and I think its pretty warm, I love it!
@@arndtbc Thanks for sharing! We thought it sounded great too.
Wow, $1k more and the same DAC as the 50. The DAC in this latest line up is a downgrade compared to previous models too, due to supply chain issues. Now I see no reason to buy these over the cheaper Denon 3800h. Same # channels, same DAC. Still better than the Enotiva MR1 tho.
We were hoping for an upgraded DAC too, but the amp section does sound a whole lot better.
It’s not supply chain, it’s greed. They can easily get quality DACs. A $100 headphone amp has a better Dac and must cost 1/4th of that to make. Surely the box, enclosure, other parts cost something. They just wanted to raise prices and put worse parts. They can have a stellar LCR dac and lesser surround dacs.
They are just relying on our ignorance and for the most part, they are right.
The 3800h has a worse Dac than the 3700h which started at $1200. Denon and Marantz are a disaster over the past two years. I think the Cinema 40 has the same Dac as the Cinema 70 which is one third the price. Marantz are playing us for fools.
Onkyo may release a new model which hopefully can be benched. Sony just released its new models but the proprietary room correction needs to be tested. I think it uses the same correction as the HT-A9 which has received good reviews but people want to control predicted curves nowadays. It may not be what you hear but your brain will match the curve.
It’s a great time to buy speakers but not the best time to buy an AVR. I’d go for Dirac from Onkyo or Arcam or wait to hear how the Sony 5000 and 7000 handle room correction. They will sound good and have power.
When I grow up 😅😊
Its a great AVR!
