For the last month, I have been recycling junk election postcards into tags, junk journal covers, and more. It is a great way to recycle, and it is fun.
I, too, am excited to see this idea as it is both creative and environmentally responsible. Another plus is that it is a cost free resource for those of us who have limited budgets. An all around winner! Thanks for sharing.
I've used these for journal covers and ephemera too! It's basically free cardstock that we would cover anyway. The larger ones male great master boards, too.
I keep a stack of these next to my die cutter, they make perfect shims for the wild variance in embossing folders and some dies, too. Also perfect weight for trapping bugs underneath a clear cup & transporting them to a more appropriate location.
A "master board" is a collage you make on a larger, thicker paper than would be used as just a folded page in your journal. After your master board collage is dry, you cut it into different sized pieces to use as tags, journal cards, pockets or "belly bands" to use in your journal. The master boards are sometimes turned collage side down when you cut it so that you can be surprised by the designs on each section. That challenges you to not overthink the collage. Let it be random or intuitive because you don't really know exactly what will be on each piece until you turn them all over after cutting them. I hope that makes sense and answers your question.
I have been so mad about getting these and adding to landfills, when I saw this, I just slapped my head! Can now see so many possibilities, one thing really impressed me was the use of watercolors! Made me think of using my watercolor pencils for a little more precise applications! Wish I hadn’t trashed so many, but new ones have no chance of escaping!😊😮😏blessed and safe days!
I have a ton of these coming every day and I thought that they were too shiny to use. I can use these if I scratch them up like you said!! I won't have to buy supplies until next year, lol
The stencil idea reminded me how I made embossing boards to roll through my big shot using layered die cuts--like with some tree shapes, star shapes, snowflakes, etc.
Thanks for the ideas espically the stencils. I've done some one time use stencils from my scraps after cutting out shapes that I wanted, but these can be used more than once and you can always make more when they get raggedy. Ive painted some of these adds white and some of them with watered down tempra paints in spray bottels and used them as novelty pages in my journals. They turned out really pretty
This is great! I saved the entire month of that junk just to see how much paper is wasted...it piled to 1 1/8" high. So I have lots of it to deal with. Thank you for the ideas.
Some really good ideas. I've always used the cardboard in packaging for this, but I've been getting lots of junk mail as of late. Thanks for the tips. Landfills need all the help we can give. I love your bird die cuts. Thanks🍁🎨💜
As soon as I saw that shine on the flyers and cards I was like "yes, I need to learn how to deal with this!" I have a ton I've been saving but no clear way forward to deal with them - these are great ideas, many thanks!!
You can also use the leftovers from cutting out the die cuts - like the birds - you can take the cards that they were cut out from - anyway, you can use the remaining paper as a stencil also! :)
This video was timely for me as I had just saved some from the trash yesterday. Now I have several awesome ideas on how to use them.😊 I especially liked the stencil idea. TFS!❤
THANK GOD your doing this video!!! I've been saving these for months!! I have an insane amount of these because of election yr, but yes I to get them yr around but not like this! I was just hoping as someone would do a video like this to give me sm ideas! Thank you thank you thank you❤❤❤
@@hitherandyonstudio Maybe I have been overthinking this, but I thought some alcohol in a spray bottle, let it dry and then cover it with paper and what nots.
Good morning. Your channel came across my UA-cam feed and I am glad it did 😊 I love how you use junk mail to recreate into something fun! I am a new subscriber and look forward to watching more of your videos! Thanks for sharing! Have a wonderful day! Gina
Ha! I have been storing these political mailers up for the last month or so for reasons I didn't know yet. I figured I'd find something worthy of my junk journals. THANKS so much for this!
I just was thinking of how I could use all these political big postcard thingies..... Yesterday, I got 7 of them in the mail 🤦♀️ Then I found this video.... awesome! Digging them out of the trash now.... lol! What part of upstate central New York area are you from? Cooperstown here 😁
Great ideas, but drat, threw all my political mailers away this year. Sure to get more. Love your vids, not only cuz you’re awesome and give beautiful freebies, but we’re practically neighbors. You’re about 4+ hours from me and the only NY UA-camr I have ever found!!
Everyone should know by now there are FREE services to help STOP junk mail! You can also take the time yourself to contact the advertisers directly! You can at LEAST be recycling people!!!
I have done that. I am on every list to not receive junk mail, but I still get it. Especially around election time. I am also on a do not call list but I still get inundated with SPAM calls. 🤷🏼♀️
I watched this. Then I ran to the trash and pulled out the 10 I received yesterday. Love free products!
LOL Yes. I sent one specifically to the shredder. With great annoyance. I'll go retrieve it, as I haven't put it in yet.
Unfortunately, I ripped mine up and already threw the trash out…and the 🗑️ has been picked up🙄 next time…
Yayy!! Glad you didn’t get rid of them
I’m thinking I need to go through the recycle! Thankfully it’s still in the house!
Thats hilarious, I had to chase the trash man down the street to get mine back. hahahaha. xxxx

Great ideas. I’m so glad to hear you’re using them up. 😊
I used to make paperclip covers, tags, and journal cards out of them these are great bases for tons of stuff. Such good, quality card!
Great tip! They are so rugged.
Love the idea of making stencils from them.
Yayy!! Hope you try it.
I too like the stencil idea made from mailers, great idea❤

@@sherrieclay6886 about the master board, please read my response to your question below. I think I did not attach it to your question.
I shred all my paper & those post cards & use them in compst & gardens.
Great idea. The worms love paper! And flowers love worm 💩

Awesome! I’ve been covering them and making tags out of them! Thanks for more options! -Karen
Oh, gee, great idea! Just seeing this two days before the election, though! And I’ve been throwing mine out!
I'm sure you'll get more from local businesses. Now you can start keeping them!

These are ingenious ideas for those mailers. We're flooded with them this time of year, especially every 4 years.
I've been making bookmarks for years out of thick, cardstock mailings.
Great ideas. TFS. I also use them with my hexagon punch to do English Paper Piecing.
That's a great idea!
I just gessoed a bunch for making envelopes. Best use of political junk mail!!

I always get so much but this time of year it’s the worst. Hope I helped make it more fun to get now 😊
I got large canvases out of a dumpster in my neighborhood, too. Thanks, Tina, Al's wife
Hello Tina (and Al) Thanks for watching!
So excited for this video. I've been saving all of our postcards for the imagery but for the less pretty ones I've been at a loss for what to do

I use them to make English Paper Piecing hexagons for quilting

Those bird dies are precious! I stopped the show to run and purchase a set for myself! Thanks! Hugs from Indiana, MK 🤗🤗
They are one of my favorite die sets. Hope you love them!
Love these ideas. What is a masterboard?
It is when you glue scraps down to a base and decorate it. You can then cut it up for tags, pockets, covers etc
I was thinking mini master boards. LOL
I've never made one yet but goodness knows the mailers would be a great place to start! 😂
Indeed. We can make
So many.
Thank you for the great ideas. I get a ton of these.
Glad you like them! Have fun
What a great idea! Love, love your creations. I look forward to every one of your ideas,
So glad!
My mailbox had 15 of those in it today!!! Yes, theres a basketful from the past few months under my desk!!!😂
I sometimes use those postcards when I need thin cardstock. I cover one side with white paper.
Awesome!
I am not at this moment going through my own trash…nope, not me! 😂 Thanks for the great ideas.
🤣🤣of course not…
Good ideas! Thank you!

I use those campaigning postcards as shims with 3-D embossing folders in my Sizzix Switch.
Great idea!!
Been saving this time around 😂 wondering what to do with them 😂
Great ideas thank you!!

Great idea! I’m thinking you could use business cards also for small pieces. I hate throwing them out when I don’t need the info anymore.
Great idea. Yes business cards are great for ephemera
Thanks those are great ideas!!😊
