Yup absolutely. I’ve been in groups of friends when I was in high school and college and NEVER would have acted like this and neither would my friends and we played collegiate rugby so we weren’t a bunch of tiny little 120 pounds who just didn’t bully people cause we were small. We had respect for people. This is a pack of grown toddlers raised by other adult toddlers. These parents failed miserably. This entire case is so hard to watch because now this trash behavior is encouraged. “Hey look! We can get away acting like a bunch of wild animals and totally fine!”

@@lukycharms9970 They didn't act like animals. Animals are usually pretty nice, and just try to avoid problems whenever possible. They acted like a bunch of loud, drunk and douchey, humans.
Edit: But if I had to compare them to a pack of animals, it would be a pack of hyenas. That's actually one animal that is somewhat similar in a way. The thing is when hyenas act like that it is because they are hunting to survive. None of them had any valid reason to act like that.

Bruce should have represented Mr. Mui. I am fully convinced that the video was being taken because the teens thought it was hilarious as hell. Had Nic not defended himself and this video would have been uploaded to UA-cam before the teens got off the river. Clearly the guy filming was filming for entertainment purposes. It was amusing until it turned against them. The state allowed this bunch of disrespectful, drunk underage teens walk away with zero accountability for their role in this whole incident.
*Note: I am not saying the injuries and death were without punishment, but this whole incident was preventable.

By the time there's hands on Miu's neck, he's already stabbed at least two people. Watch the uncensored video. He gets pushed into the water initially, slapped once by a kid, and then pushed from behind by yellow trunks. As yellow trunks tries pushing him again, he stabs him in the stomach. Everything after that, he's the armed aggressor. Miu seems to cut the girl immediately after he's up without her coming at him. Then someone pushes Miu by the neck, can't tell if he stabs that person or not. I'd say yellow trunks had it coming since he did initially push Miu toward the water as he was trying to get up. Doesn't seem like anything except that was justified to me.

If you watch the 1st aired video, this whole thing started with a young man named Juwan shouting " He's a Raper!" Twice, and then the other boys all calling him a Pedophile and saying he was " looking for little girls". Juwan then films, and narrates the whole scene as it escalates, while never leaving his tube. It will take an older person being killed by drowning, or worse before this mob mentality these kids have, will stop, if ever.
Several football players pulled this crap in an A& W restaurant 5 years ago to my then 90 year old MIL. When I stepped in front of her, one of the boys Mothers had the audacity to jump up and start screaming at ME.
I calmly told her to back the f up , or I was calling the Police for battery on an elderly person. She walked away, then. I CAN say, that we raised 6 kids without dui's, without the Police involved, by allowing them natural consequences when they were very young. They were also taught compassion for others( especially elderly people) and my now grown 13 Grandkids were taught the same.
Parents need to start spending time with their kids, and teaching g basic morals, values, and manners. This entire scene would never er have gone shit sideways if these young adults weren't drunk off their assessment, and just plain mean. They FA, and FO that not everyone will put up with being bullied, and a victim. I don't think he should have gone as far as he did when defending himself , but who knows what anyone of us might do when 13 people are shoving us down into water repeatedly, and all shoving & screaming at a person.

@@reneet5858 I don't want to come off as rude but it is absolutely unfair to try and place all the blame for what happened on these kids. Everyone can see they're being asses and if they weren't nothing might've happened that day (Probably). However, we have to look at what happens next as being truly the problem. "Kids being kids" as Miu describes it to the police when he lies about his involvement. Kids being kids doesn't warrant the brutal stabbing of 4 and the killing of 1. I can empathise that it is scary when a whole groups starts yelling and shouting, but if you have a deadly weapon on you and shits going a little bit south you remove yourself asap. We don't really see in the video who threw the first punch but judging by how quick Miu was to stabbing I wouldn't be shocked if it was him. These kids were aggressive and definitely frightening but not life threatening by any means. It's the same kind of scary as when you see some teens in front of a store or something. You don't want anything bad to happen but youre not gonna blow their brains out at the first sign of interaction. I wish people would stop spreading the narrative that this was some little feeble old man who really wasn't up to much. This was a killer who threw away the murder weapon, tried to disguise himself from being identified to the crime and lied to police in order to try and be free. Without the video evidence he would probably be free to this day and it is disgusting that people will downplay this for what it really was.

Let's look st from the other side:
(Note: I may not have the story completely straight)
So, you're a grown man who lost your phone in the river and you need to retrieve it. You go to the spot to search for your phone and you see there's a group there. For whatever reason, perhaps you were flustered or aggravated because you lost your phone, you don't clearly communicate to these strangers your intentions. Why should you though, they're strangers?
So you go to the place to look for your phone and get a little close to some of the people and they start focusing their attention on you. They guy was clearly feeling very awkward and probably a bit confused, but now we have a group of people focusing all their attention onto this man, a man who already felt out of place.
So you're trying to think about where to find your phone, meanwhile, these teenagers are being extremely obnoxious and are beginng to surround and humiliate you. Keep in mind, you really haven't said anything at this point. They start screaming crazy stuff at you, mocking you, getting in your face, and finally they push you and begin to assault you.
Gang assaults are not to be taken lightly. A 2v1 could easily result in serious injury, now imagine you're on the ground surrounded by 10+ people who are tellong at and assaulting you for no real reason. I'd say it's pretty reasonable to feel threatened and in danger at that point.
Even after the man pulls the knife and tries to stand up they continue to assault him. When a man just let's you assault him, you best not push him far. At no point did they stop to consider why they were attacking they guy, nor the potentially serious damage they could inflict upon him. They were simply beating a man that was down because they could.
If he punched the girl, then it's not the same, of course. This is simply the story as I saw and understood it.

I mean that goes both ways the kids were being ignorant but then the grown adult chose to act exactly the same way which is what then led to the escalation. Any rational adult would have just carried on with what they were doing not tried to one up the immaturity by touching the teens and their tubes splashing water at them. You expect drunk teens to act immaturely as they are still immature you expect more adult behavior out of a 52 year old man....
You'd expect a 52 year old man to know well enough to leave people alone as you say but he chose not to leave the kids alone and ended up taking a life and harming 4 other people atleast 2 of which never did anything to him.

Escalated, sure. Provoked? I'm not entirely sure about that. He was acting pretty odd, so it's not unreasonable to be creeped out by him. He also lied about basically everything to the police, so it's not a huge leap to think that someone who stabbed 5 people (killing 1 and disemboweling another), could've been trying to hide the fact that he'd thrown a punch in response to being berated while the camera wasn't on him.
Ideally, he just says what he's doing near them, and none of this ever happens. If he really was looking for his phone, that's probably the one thing a group of drunk college-age kids could empathize with, and they'd probably have helped him find it.

@@NinjaSamurai-jm9sx The problem you run into is that who started the altercation isn't the only issue with his self-defense claim The number of people he stabbed, the extent of their injuries, and his failing his duty to retreat because there were accounts and other video evidence of him going back into the group also make his claim hard to buy.
If you couple that with accounts that he threw the first punch and his attempt to conceal his involvement from police, there it's not unreasonable to believe that his actions weren't self-defense.
Some component of what he did might have been self-defense, but like Bruce said, you can't claim self-defense if you started the fight. At some point, the force goes beyond self-defense too. At what point do you stop thinking a man stabbing people is self-defense? The 3rd victim? The disemboweled lady? When someone dies? The 5th person? Take all of the factors into account, and what the jury did doesn't seem outlandish.

The best things that can result from this is:
    1) more awareness of how alcohol can be dangerous as it impairs judgment.
    2) more awareness that there are consequences for bad behavior. Regardless of which side you believe was the more responsible for the altercation, both sides exhibited bad behavior which resulted in severe consequences.
This type of brutal altercation is just sad all around. All their lives are irrevocably affected by alcohol abuse. The kids have to live with knowing that their drunken behavior and inappropriate mobbing of a man for “laughs” resulted in a death and serious injuries to people. The man has to live with knowing that his alcohol impaired judgment resulted in him violently attacking others, resulting in one death and multiple injuries that he caused as well as the sentence he will serve.
There are no winners here. Both sides of this behaved inappropriately and played a part. Every person involved needs to take accountability for their piss poor behavior.

Look, did the kids behave badly? Yes. But, so did Miu! That man, the adult in the room had every opportunity to walk back to his group and leave that whole situation but he didn’t period. As a result 5 people were stabbed killing one of them, and others with serious injuries. He was so afraid for his life that he sat in the back of that cop car and lied through his teeth! And continued the lies at the police station. Did 2 of the boys have knives as he stated? No! And why did the person who was afraid for his life lie? Because Mr. Miu knew that he was the only person with a knife and used it to stab 5 people. He knew that he didn’t walk away from the situation. He was mad! And when he found out one of the victims died, he knew his life was over as he stated at the station “ my life just went down the tubes” yep that’s what happens when you decide to use a deadly weapon to inflict harm. Not in the leg, not in the arm, the torso! The girl that was screaming at him and he allegedly punched? He didn’t stab her, no, he stabbed the one near her that did nothing. He knew what he did was wrong and he was in serious trouble period!! I know a lot of people think that the verdict was unjust and I just don’t understand that. I can tell you....I was in a situation much like this, but a bit less.
I was a camp counselor. My cabin had with grade girls. I was 22.
They said they were doing a celebration to finish up our two weekends of camp. They said they had a cake and wanted me to close my eyes while they got the cake out. Instead, they dumped a bucked of water 💦 very my head. Then they tried shoving me into a running cold shower. There were only eight of them and one of me. To push me in the shower, they had to hang up on me like these people did to Mr Miu. Even though nobody had a weapon and there were only eight of them, I still remember the fear that I had. I had no idea what their intention was, they were screaming and yelling and pushing me. I only remember swinging my arms at anything and anyone that I might be able to move out of the way so I could get outside and away from the girls. Now, I'm not a screamer. But, they tell me I was screaming at them to leave me alone. It took only a few minutes to get out the door and away from them. But, I remember terror going through my mind. And, now....almost 40 years later, what I remember is as clear as it was that day. I still scares me to think of what they might have done...and/or wanted to do all in the name of "being funny" when really they were being huge bullies! They were mocking and seeing how much they could humiliate me.
I was terrified .....for a short amount of time. But, out of "fight or flight", it was fight until I could flee. If I'd have had a weapon, even a small one, I probably would have done some damage to one or more of those girls.
In my mind, the kids started everything by taunting and teasing.
I hope they learned their lessons and never do anything like that again. It NEVER ends well, even if it looks like that t does!

I feel like people need stop taking sides. He never should have threw the kid off his floaty, they shouldn't have hit him, he shouldn't have escalated to assault with deadly weapon (especially since he wasn't at risk of death, I wouldn't have thought they were going to kill me in his situation), he shouldn't have stabbed the innocent bystander (you can't just attack EVERYONE around because you feel threatened), it goes all around. I'd say my opinion is he should be charged for manslaughter or third degree because he never should have taken it that far, he could have punched back, also he instigated from the vide9 we see, but they are also not innocent.

personally i think everyone there should have gotten charged for being reckless, or no one at all charged, everyone there should have handled it differently, not just the old man

If you watched the testimonies everyone lied. They lied about the kids screaming help. They lied about Madison getting hit/punched/slapped. Everyone one of the teens tried to downplay their part. The people who got that teen killed was Madison and that black kid.

Only 1 person there used a weapon to kill.
These kids were rude, and embarrassing to watch, but their stupidity isn't a death sentence.
Once he ran up on their tubes and grabbed at them, he lost a lot of credibility of self defence.
Thing is, he even knew he went way overboard with it, judging by his every action after.
