    I have been using the shea moisture curl and hibiscus line (which contains silk protein in every product) for the past 6 months and in the beginning it looked amazing and i have never been so happy with my curls before. A few weeks ago i started noticing that my hair was changing and kinda weird, less shine, definition, brittle and shattered and i thought i need moisture so i bought a deep conditioner but i was still horrible and i was getting kinda worried. Now it makes so much sense! I have protein overload due to using excessively and repeatedly silk protein in my hair! I will try to fix it! Thank u!

      The same happened to me. I realized that every single one of my products had either a lot of protein or coconut oil. Every single one.

    Proteine overload can easily be confused with very damaged protein. Hair that ist over processed with dye, bleach or relaxer will brake very easy, is not able to bind moisture to it and therefore feels extremely dry. So how can you tell if it's an overload or a severe damaged hair?

      thats my hair

    • @cloudyskiees
      @cloudyskiees 3 роки тому +8

      well i suppose you know if your hair has reasons to be damaged? if you constantly apply high heat to it, dye it etc then its damaged but if you havent done anything to ur hair it cant be severely damaged only from rubbing on pillows

    • @kristytrent9875
      @kristytrent9875 2 роки тому +2

      if uve applied more protein products lately, you would know it’s overload

    • @music389xd4
      @music389xd4 Рік тому +1

      Yes, what the people above said. I have severely heat damaged overprocessed coily curly hair for example, so if you know that it is that, then that's what it is, and then if you haven't had anything that can cause damaged hair, and just used too much protein then it's protein overload. I had protein overload once, it was very sticky and was very hard like a rock. Damaged hair lost curl at this point, and needs to go through transitioning process to return back to curly hair/itself again. For me it looks like I have 3-4 hair types (2 at front 2 at back) (I have 2 types) due to extreme tangling that also happened due to me never learning how to care for my coily/curly hair after 15 years of heat damage, had to cut it all off at the back, but yea I hope that explains that.

    hello. My experience was similar, i bleached my hair which already had moderade damage to it, and then i went overboard with protein treatments, and i got protein overload and my hair is literally breaking off and i really dont want to cut it. I have some questions. Is there some kind of pre-poo treatment to help get rid of protein overload? I ve been using olaplex no0 and no3 (technically they said that it s not a protein treatment but i see my hair getting worsw from it) so i stopped. I got a clarifying shampoo and some masks. How long should i focus on moisture and when should i start integrating protein again? I heard that apple cidre vinegar helps get rid of protein overload, and also pinnaple juice, what do you think i should do?

I don’t use heat of color on my hair either.

My hair desperately needs a trim, it needs color (I have too much gray...and always color my hair), and I have been testing products. So I think that I am just in the "really dry" phase but not protein overload. Usually a deep conditioner with protein, will get me back on track, but last week and this week, I didn't get good results. I am thinking of alternating my weekly DCs - one week with protein and the next week with moisture. I definitely want to try out these tips. Thanks again for all your research!

      Great question! I'm not sure. I think it depends on the products. I imagine if you have products that are heavy in sealing oils, heavy butters, etc that it may not penetrate. However using an oil first will still help give slip and prevent shampoo from drying out your hair.

    After the DevaCurl scandal (thankfully I didn't seem to have any damage, but I stopped using their products just to be safe), I switched over to the NYM Curl Talk line just to have something safe while I look for my new go-to products. I noticed that most of the Curl Talk Products have keratin and something called Rice Curl Complex. I think I may be having protein issues since I do feel the ends of my curls are acting weird and seem to be losing their curl even one day after wash day. If someone is using the suite of Curl Talk products like me could they be at risk of protein overload? I have virgin 3B hair, never colored or heat treated, so my porosity is probably on the low side. Thanks for another great video!

    • @GenaMarie
      @GenaMarie  4 роки тому

      Have you tried clarifying and deep conditioning? The Curl Talk line could cause some buildup because of the polyquat ingredients (sealing ingredients that help prevent frizz in humidity). I've found that clarifying once a month or so is ideal when using that line.

    I am still confused though, because I have very little protein in my products, but then when I actually do a protein treatment, it will become extremely extremely soft and lengthened (so the symptoms explained with moisture overload occur when I use protein)😂

    This explained what I've been going through thank you! You mentioned that it's good to wash hair less often but i usually get dandruff in like a day or 2 and I don't know why, I have a dry scalp and hair and it happens even when I oil it. It's so confusing I don't really know how to treat protein overload with dandruff.

    • @any8574
      @any8574 3 роки тому

      I heard that cowash can help with that. It’s most likely not dandruff but tiny pieces of your scalp falling because of how dry it is. Of course, you know your own hair, but I said that because that can also be the cause. Maybe you are using many harsh products
      Cowash would be great, Aloe Vera as well

    I’ve never used any protein treatments in my hair before. I have very thick, dry, curly hair. My hair does feel dry and sometimes brittle, which confuses me because that is the symptoms of too much protein in the hair. If is high porosity is probably because you didn't lock the moisture in properly in your washing day.

    Can you use this shampoo everyday? I'm still learning about this protein overload stuff and I heard someone else say you only wanna use the clarifying shampoo just once during this protein overload because I dnt wanna strip my hair. Make sense? I'm looking for an everyday shampoo and conditioner without protein and coconut oil and I'm wondering if this Carol's daughter one you used on here could be it or if I can only use it just this once. Not all high porosity hair is damaged. Some hair is naturally higher porosity and perfectly healthy. A licensed stylist or trichilogist can help a person better asses their porosity and also troubleshoot issues of breakage and excessive dryness that may not be addressed by just guessing.
    Also, it's important to respect the struggles of people of color by not appropriating the term *Natural Hair* . The Natural Hair Movement is very significant to people of color and does not apply to others. It's more appropriate to simply speak about your *curly hair* or *wavy hair*.
    Definitely curious to check out the Innersense line now: appreciate the mini review 👍
