I didn't realize she was truly deaf. Most times I have seen deaf people portrayed in the media, it is been by non-deaf actors. Kudos to the filmmakers for actually finding someone who is deaf!
Amazing kid. I hope we see her in some other movies or short films when she's older. Deaf ppl and other who communicate primarily by signing need more representation example in shows like Emmerdale or Coronation street.
Maisie is Amazing! ❤️ Maisie is an absolutely beautiful and talented young girl! She is precious and sweet as they come, (especially watching her, here, behind the scenes)! Wish her all the best as an actress and in life! Thank You Maisie for sharing your talent with the world!
What a wonderful little girl and fabulous actress! Her look conveyed a thousand words! You are a star, Maisie, and I hope to see you perform in many more movies as you grow up! I LOVED The Silent Child and I especially loved YOU in it! xxx
As i rmb some signs are difficult for young children bcos their hand muscles and joints are not fully developed. Children substitute some signs with sth similar, just like in speech. I think at her age she doesn't have all the wrist joints yet and maybe gestures like raising the pinky and the pointer finger tgt would be difficult? Not sure cus i don't know sign language. I have seen a video of a child substituting raising the pinky with another finger while signing though 😅 Or perhaps she meant sth more like the lines were difficult to remember
I feel if someone shows her & teaches her she could speak. Since her siblings & parents are deaf, she has nobody to talk to her. So really she lives in a world of silence.
She is deaf, she can't hear anything, learning to speak based on someone explaining where to put your lips and tongue and throat is incredibly difficult and it's rare for anyone to get very good at it. It's a huge amount of memorisation, no feedback, and you still can't tell what people are saying to you (try saying 'met bet pet mit bit pet mut but put' in a mirror - most of lipreading is educated guesses). Her dad speaks English extremely fluently but he is only partially deaf, that's why.
I accept that most things are possible with enough time but you have no idea how torturous speech therapy is and how much time it takes just to come close to saying something understandable. Then there are other problems. People don't listen and even if they understand you have to understand them reply. Please don't come back with "but there's lip-reading" because only 30% of English can be accurately lip-read the rest is just guessing and so many words looks the same. Not every deaf person can lip read or do it well and even done well it's limited. So hearing people need to "listen" (yes haha hilarious I used the word "listen" 🤦 before anyone says it) to deaf people telling you how it is being deaf. Thanks.
Maybe they had an interpreter behind the camera, that's often how it goes. I believe him saying the questions out loud were more for our sake than hers

What is Kudos?
@@claranepo It means (in American English) that I am giving a salute to the film maker. Another meaning in American english might be good job.

The signs were difficult? I wonder why

@@carolhomanhei9497 I took it as meaning she had to memorise lines, personally.

how could someone deaf learn to talk all of a sudden?!
🙄 She's death too.
@@Lindie8888 DEAF! Death means to die!
