I mean he doesn’t really seem evil or the song doesn’t even sound like a bad guy song. It sounds More like a “I’m mildly upset” song
that’s cuz it was made by both a pop writer and a pop song producer and you can REALLY feel the effects of that in the song

I thought it made sense and maybe clever because he was upset in this song but then when he started using the book it turned his anger to evil.
The "bad guy" isn't really bad and they are trying to make him bad. It just ends up being a "upset king" song.
Disney really messed up Magnifico. Too evil to be a "misguided" villain but too sympathetic to be a "classic" one.
This movie had such potential. And it was squandered almost immediately.
Watched the movie recently and I actually quite enjoyed it. Would love to know what you think was the 'squandered potential' in it.
@@tietyhcu3274 I think the movie, on it’s own, would be a pretty good movie. But the fact that they advertised this as being a “return to classic Disney” set expectations too high. The songs are all peppy, happy songs you would hear on the radio, not emotional songs that explain the wants and needs of characters. I think they are good songs, but not good songs for a musical.
The villains of the older Disney era were evil, hate filled creatures who were blind to reason in their quest for power. King Magnifico was almost that, but then they decided to make him a strange mix of pure evil and yet, misunderstood. The beginning of the movie set up a good man with a bad moral compass, led astray by anger. Then, they take a sharp left turn and make Magnifico get hypnotized by a book of evil, and all previous character goes out the window.
Then, there’s the main character, Asha. She has no real motivation for her character. It’s all very vague, and what they do tell us is not at all interesting. For example, she wants her grandfather to get his wish, but that isn’t enough motivation to overthrow Magnifico’s rule and break his laws. Then, she says she wants everyone to have their wish. But Magnifico already gave a very good, fair reason as to why some wishes aren’t granted.
All together, it’s not nearly on par with the movies it was inspired by. Between it’s strange character choices, it’s over promised, under delivered story, and it’s (in my opinion) slightly disappointing visuals, combined with a song choice more at home on it’s own then in a movie, Disney’s Wish is just not a movie I personally enjoy more than average. And for Disney’s 100th anniversary, average is not enough.
@@tietyhcu3274the fact that it is nice to watch does not mean it couldnt have been better, though. and this movie couldve been a LOT better. instead of just an enjoying watch it couldve had a more meaningful story, BETTER songs, a more tightly written plot with good tension without wasting screentime on contrived character tropes and personalities.. did you know that the villain concept was originally a couple??! yeah, a lot was squandered on this movie. just because its “good,” doesnt mean much. it couldve been so much more. but the disney suits like usual are too scared to give their writers and animators room to breathe. they are so big and successful that they dont want to experiment with anything. now their 100th anniversary movie hardly lives up to the name, as all their classics are way better in all the previously mentioned areas.

The plot itself is disturbing and super controversial it gave me an unsettling impression throughout the whole movie. Imagine disney makes a movie where Hitler becomes the hero.

I think the most disturbing part that gave me on edge are those little figurines representing the citizens of Rosas and the way of how Magnifico treats them, especially this particular one who is holding the crumbled house.
if he really treats them this way, then how come everyone sees him as a hero? he may be a narcissist, but maybe outside of wish granting, he could be an effective ruler. maybe he's acting this way cause he's pissed.

It's funny, when I initially hear "I let you live here for free, and I don't even charge you rent", I think I misheard it as "I'd let you live here for free" because I thought he was talking about a hypothetical scenario where he'd let them live in his castle, but instead he's talking about how generous he is by simply letting the people live within his kingdom. I also though the comment was a follow-up to the burning house thing, but no, they're unrelated.
The more I learn about Magnifico, the worse he becomes... which is good, I've missed Disney Villains like this!
He basically… established a veil of generosity and kindness , while in truth, acting very cruel and greedy.
He threw a fit because he didn’t think anyone believed in his generosity…
Offered to seize Benito’s property to help someone else in need, then volunteered Henry to deal with yet another person’s disaster, all in the first few seconds of the song.
But it was so upbeat that I didn’t pick up on it right away.

Magnifico is a treat to watch. So menacing despite the upbeatness of his song and some of his expressions

You know, actually seeing the context for what Magnifico is singing about really drives home how he really is not as nice as he either claims to be or thinks he is.
I think it’s a “thinks he is” scenario, I get serious guy who can’t tell he’s the bad guy vibes

He is singing about himself and how good he is and how ungrateful the people are. I love this song because it’s a villain song that doesn’t proclaim how evil they are. It’s him singing about how ungrateful everyone else is to his benevolence, and we viewers are to interpret his song as evil.
I was hoping they should make a dark song and evil like in The Hunchback of Notre Dame: Frollo singing hellfire. This is not what I expected

Chris Pine is a treasure. He had a blast voicing this role and it shows. Honestly, he made the film enjoyable. Any time his character was on screen, I was having fun.
KING MAGNIFICO IS MY FAVORITE CHARATER!
I feel that this song wouldn't fit well with what's going on. The song I think should be more somber and darker, showing his true frustration on why he feels like he's not getting the respect he deserves, after all he did for the kingdom. But instead it ends up being a joke instead, with the way he acts and behaves, in addition to the sound of the music.
Exactly, that’s why he was deemed one, if not the worst villain in a Disney film.

This is one of my favorite parts of the movie. I think the King is my favorite character but seeing people try to say he's actually the good guy is agony. He's very obviously an evil narcissist I don't know how people are missing that

kindness is giving and not wanting anything back. it's just being kind, no matter how hard it is. as someone who grew up with this type of parent, ( "you must pay me back because i raised you >:(") this is exactly how it feels
ex: always taking away from others to "help" the other one ( as seen at the giving clothes back)

Y'know this song tries to paint him as a manipulatior or as self-centered, but in the context of the film - he has been a good king for decades, he asks for help from his kingdom ONCE in stopping chaos from reigning, and his subjects 1st response was "Why cat you just grant more wishes and give us all we want all the time?" ... yeah id be reasonably upset to. It also konda reframes the song as guy trying to get a people who are dependent on him to do things for themselves

I believe in this movie its not about getting all yours or everyones wishes granted. I believe it's about haimg the right to go try make those dreams a reality yourself instead of relaying on someone else with magic to do it for you.
Thats the message their trying to get across to kids. TO NOT RELY ON OTHERS TO MAKE THEIR DREAMS COME TRUE😊. Its as simple as that.
Magnifico is the villian since he is the only one allowed to so magic and to see the wishes. Qith the qishes he hold power over the people since he makes them forget what they wished for when they give their wishes to him. So by having their wishes he hold power and control over them thats why he got so mad when they started questioning him and his judgment since he even said ' i decide what they deserve ' ( i believe it's whats said) and he dosnt even care about the people AT ALL he dosnt care who or what he hurts andit shows in how he treats the figures in this song. All he wants is power over them
Asha after finding out magnifico will never grant 99% of the wishes givin to him ask him to just give the qishes back so that the people could try and make them come true themselves. But he gets super angry when she says that and refuses. Then when she meets star she finally get the chance to get the wishes back to not only her family but to the whole kingdom
But this movie has one somple meaning and most people are hating on this movie because they believe its about " that all wishes should be granted ' but it not its like i sid above ' its about not relying on someone else to make your dream come true' or at the most its also about ' anyone can make their sream come true if they try '
Yes disney could have did this movie alot more justice but just by seeing the outer layers of this KIDS show is just plain stupid. But people will be people and believe what they want to.

Its honestly a little worrying that people listen to this song and think hes the villain(scratch that evil he is technically the villain) even without watching the movie. Like so many people say "Well hes a narcissist", yeah and? Hes not evil for being full of himself, hes a king who brought peace and prosperity to what was an otherwise ravaged land, partially the movie does a bad job explaining his backstory, I think what annoys me the most is people see this guy who grants wishes he thinks are fair and good for the kingdom, and all they can think about is "But hes not grants more" or "But hes keeping them" like at best hes doing the right thing and theres literally nothing wrong, and at worst hes slightly misguided but not evil

I wish they'd had a better chorus than a "da da duh duh da da duh duh" that sounds really upbeat. It doesn't give "I'm a menacing villain" vibes. "Friends on the Other Side" and "Be Prepared" prove it's possible.

Even if he's treating the little figures badly... That's literally an anger management technique? Like, let out your anger on something inanimate, so it doesn't explode on actual people. If using his magic to burn imaginary figures is what it took to keep him sane, to for it.

To be honest I think this movie didn't do Magnifico justice. Like there was alot of emphasis on his origin story being tragic and I agree that not all wishes should be granted with little work for the achievement. Also humanity sucks and I'm pretty sure a good chunk of those wishes could lead to morally ambiguous consequences like for example if someone's wish was to marry and have the love of another. Sounds cute and wholesome but can turn unsettling if you factor the possibility of someone's will being taken and manipulated to answer the wish without the persons consent. I just feel that the story itself would have been better as a series instead of trying to fit everything into a 1 hour and 35 minute film. You know to lay some ground work for the lore, flesh out the characters and make that whole betrayal scenes actually something I would be emotionally invested in. The current movie format made everything rushed and to fast paced for me.

He’s not even really a villain like just watched the movie and it’s kinda messed up his home was destroyed and his people were slaughtered so he decided to make a home where people who couldn’t handle the world he would take their pain and protect their hopes even if those hopes weren’t safe he’d protect them like seriously this dude is so worried about what vague wishes may do because he’s already lost it all this dude isn’t evil he probably has PTSD and has given all these people such a wonderful life they just don’t appreciate him and act like he’s a tyrant when he’s never actually put them through any hardship the main character is super selfish and quick to try and use him and when she doesn’t get her way convinces everyone that this actual utopia is terrible turning all his people against him like seriously I can’t help but feel bad for the “villain” like even taking control of the evil magic legit just feels like him seeing he may lose everything and everyone again this movie is just like that stupid dragon one where they messaged to badly given blaming the victim
