Can't believe this song was written for the Live performance. Ne-yo (the Tin Woodman) and Elijah Kelley (The Scarecrow) co-wrote it with two other songwriters and it was pure genius. Wonder if this will be in the revival of The Wiz.
Sean Horace It doesn't matter, musicals get revised all the time. "Hopelessly Devoted to You" and "You're the One that I Want" weren't in the original score of "Grease," but since the movie, they have been used in the stage version. "You Can't Win" was composed for the original musical as a song for the Winkies to sing, but they used it for the Scarecrow in the movie and this show. There was a lot of stuff from the original stage version that got changed when the show came to Broadway, and new music was added. The stage version's Act One finishes up with Dorothy and her friends despairing over what the Wiz has told them to do. No musical number at all.
This is the song that expresses one of the messages of The Wizard of Oz: Believe in yourself and (with determination and hard work) you can overcome any obstacle.
I LOVE this song! I guess it's because I realize that they were really afraid but decided that they were going to do it together. When I actually got the message of the song, I had on it repeat and was just crying! Crazy, but true. Amazing writing Ne-Yo and Elijah Kelley.
This song and every song by the Tin Man in this production were absolutely stellar, and nearly made me get the album. Don't get me wrong, the whole thing was great, but those 3 songs are the standout for me.
Album: The Wiz Live! I’m not doing this, ‘cause even I know it don’t make no sense Breaking a heart got me this way; I ain’t in a rush to see that again Just thinking about it is terrifying Ooooooooooohhhh You ain’t gonna give up on me now. I won’t let you turn around This won’t be easy, no way, no how, but we won’t back down When the night is so cold, dark, and lonely All you got to do is look at me and hear what I say And we got it (we got it) I got you (I got you) So we got it (we got it) We got it, together we do So close, yet so far, I can see our dreams from standing right where we are The only thing that’s in our way are these impossible odds I’m terrified this is just way too hard What if I fail (fail)? How do I fly (fly), knowing there’s a good chance we’ll fall from the sky (sky)? What were we thinking? Why do we even try? That’s what we get for letting our hopes get too high I can’t believe what I’m hearing, get ahold of yourself You ain’t gonna give up on me now. I won’t let you turn around This won’t be easy, no way, no how, but we won’t back down When the night is so cold, dark, and lonely All you got to do is look at me and hear what I say And we got it (we got it) I got you (I got you) So we got it (we got it) We got it, together we do Ain’t nobody giving us nothing, if we want it there’s just no other way I’ll be right here, come what may, together we’ll be a face it You know that I’ve got you there's nothing we can’t do, oh no, oh no, oh no Things are waiting for us so let’s go We ain’t gonna give up on this now, we refuse to turn around This won’t be easy, no way, no how, but we won’t back down When the night is so cold, dark, and lonely All you got to do is look at me and hear what I say We got it (we got it) I got you (I got you) We got it (we got it) We got it, together we do I can conquer the mountains (together we do) Swim the deepest sea (together we do) There ain’t nothing I can’t do as long as you’re with me Together, together (oh yeah, oh yeah) Together, together (oh yeah, oh yeah) Together, together Together we do!
The quartet's performance at the Director's Guild of America's reunion panel for the Wiz Live brought me here. I wasn't a big fan of the song but I liked it and it brought the first half of the broadcast out on a high note!
I don't know where I have been, I didn't know they had a live version of The Wiz let alone they were jamming like this! Hat's off to David Alan Grier never new he could sing let alone sound so amazing.
And the only song invented by the Wiz Live. The others were from the original Broadway score except You Can't Win which was written for the movie version.
We're doing this in my school but our teachers merging the scripts. Best thing ever is that our wiz is tiny and the boy playing scarecrow is gonna say " he's tiny" and I walk on stage and say " what's wrong with being small " then just walk off. Oh and this is the only 1 I know off by heart and is the best song EVER.
This song is so amazing how do you put so much passion in it when you Dance and sing you don’t dance like the other wizard of oz plays there’s something special about the dances and singing you guys put into it you’re better than all the movies the wizard of awes has done and plays and shows you are amazing and you’re the Play I ever seen in my life.!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!
I agree that cause I am reusing this song with my movie Zuma the hero pup. this explains that Ryder telling the pups they can do it no matter the obcicles and dangers they are doing it as a team but the pups are afraid they might lose Zuma just like they almost lost Rocky they don't want to cause it is too risky and afraid to try get Rocky, Zuma and Choco to get back home, but Ryder tells the pups they need to help Zuma save his girlfriend Choco and get Rocky and Medic along with Zuma and Choco home in Adventure Bay just like the play with the three friends refuse to help to stop Eviline.
I feel a strong connection with this whole song! Especially tonight when I heard from Doug Walker that he and Channel Awesome were at a standstill with UA-cam and their copyright laws. But after a talk with a friend of mine, I feel I can face this obstacle with bravery and dignity! I'm gonna do the best I can with my UA-cam channel, and hope for the best for the whole website! Thank you so much for putting this up here! I feel a new sense of courage because of this song!
+Tyler Bueno Music Not really, she has a uniquely identifiable voice, though she does evoke Stephanie Mills a little. But they all sound like Dorothy Gale! ;-)
Can't believe this song was written for the Live performance. Ne-yo (the Tin Woodman) and Elijah Kelley (The Scarecrow) co-wrote it with two other songwriters and it was pure genius. Wonder if this will be in the revival of The Wiz.
+Sean “kermit t. dinofrog” Horace I wouldn't be the least bit surprised. :-)
Why?
Sean Horace Because it's such a great song and it's gone over huge with "Wiz' fans, why else?
because it wasn't a part of the original productions of the Wiz. So how does act I end before this song anyway?
Sean Horace It doesn't matter, musicals get revised all the time. "Hopelessly Devoted to You" and "You're the One that I Want" weren't in the original score of "Grease," but since the movie, they have been used in the stage version.

This is the finale for the dance concert at my school and it the last performance me and all my friends will do together. I'm an emotional mess.

I LOVE this song! I guess it's because I realize that they were really afraid but decided that they were going to do it together. When I actually got the message of the song, I had on it repeat and was just crying! Crazy, but true. Amazing writing Ne-Yo and Elijah Kelley.
This was amazing though... "I THOUGHT Y'ALL WAS MY SQUAD!" Lol.
That part made me laugh so hard. (≧▽≦)

This was my school's senior class song. 2k16, but I'm only a freshman I went for my cousin, she graduated today and this was their song.
This song and every song by the Tin Man in this production were absolutely stellar, and nearly made me get the album. Don't get me wrong, the whole thing was great, but those 3 songs are the standout for me.
+cheese4g Ne-Yo did a magnificent job as the Tin Man.
This is a masterpiece of art we need this song in 2020!

Album: The Wiz Live!
I’m not doing this, ‘cause even I know it don’t make no sense
Breaking a heart got me this way; I ain’t in a rush to see that again
Just thinking about it is terrifying
Ooooooooooohhhh
You ain’t gonna give up on me now. I won’t let you turn around
This won’t be easy, no way, no how, but we won’t back down
When the night is so cold, dark, and lonely
All you got to do is look at me and hear what I say
And we got it (we got it)
I got you (I got you)
So we got it (we got it)
We got it, together we do
So close, yet so far, I can see our dreams from standing right where we are
The only thing that’s in our way are these impossible odds

And we got it (we got it)
I got you (I got you)
So we got it (we got it)
We got it, together we do
Ain’t nobody giving us nothing, if we want it there’s just no other way
I’ll be right here, come what may, together we’ll be a face it
You know that I’ve got you there's nothing we can’t do, oh no, oh no, oh no
Things are waiting for us so let’s go
We ain’t gonna give up on this now, we refuse to turn around
This won’t be easy, no way, no how, but we won’t back down
When the night is so cold, dark, and lonely
All you got to do is look at me and hear what I say
We got it (we got it)
I got you (I got you)
We got it (we got it)
We got it, together we do
I can conquer the mountains (together we do)
Swim the deepest sea (together we do)
There ain’t nothing I can’t do as long as you’re with me
Together, together (oh yeah, oh yeah)
Together, together (oh yeah, oh yeah)
Together, together
Together we do!
