10:03 Fujimoto DID have other people that by his side - he didn’t lose them in such a tragic way, but his former assistants; Yuji Kaku, Tatsuya Endo, Yukinobu Tatsu who went on to make Jigokuraku, Spy x Family & Dandadan respectively. I think Kyomoto was meant to represent them and they’re moving apart. Their presence in his life drove him forward and encouraged him to keep creating.
He didn't really lose any of them in that sense. They all apparently saw eachother as family making and creating stories that fascinate them so I don't even think Fujimoto ever saw them as assistants but more like the siblings that he could make fucked up stories with and not feel judged for it. They all still support eachothers work and probably keep in contact. What's the most tragic part in all this though is Tatsuya Endo who wanted to tell crazy stories like his peers with ideas that scream "insanity" but none of them ever stuck and then one day he decided to make a manga he didn't want to make and made it for the sole purpose of seeing if people like it (basically he didn't want to cater to people but did out of spite to prove a point). That manga went on to be a super popular one "Spy X Family" and now he's stuck making a manga he doesn't really fuck with while his peers go onto create works such as Dandadan and Hell's Paradise (ie the stories he wanted to make).
My daughter and I just finished seeing it. The drive home mainly consisted of stunned silence. Better than 99% of Hollywood movies that come out today by a country mile.
I think kyomoto is a referance to koyoto animation. since is a studio he realy realy likes. and i think the incident is an homage to real people who died unfortunately in the kyoto animation arson atack. and i think makes sense on the pararel universe he wishes he could save those people who he respects alot.
This is why this anime / manga hits hard when you can understand the hidden reason why they're references the studio / art college in the same way it did in real life. Plus it gives us some ideas of when this film was set in the year this incident happened. You can interpret this art in so many ways and that is the reason this is my movie of the year. I read the manga after being recommended by another person online about this and at the time I felt it was fine but then when talking to friends about it, I realised something, It's was about Kyoto Animation. I went back to read it again and then I started to cry. I never really cry in manga before but this hit me hard. And when I heard that this was going to be getting a short movie adaptation, I went in it hoping to get a bit of decent adaptation but afterwards I started to cry again and I was happy that it just hit as hard as the manga. I have seen a lot of movies this year and yet this is my film of the year. I want this movie to get an Oscar for everything (it wouldn't, because the Oscars hate Animé for some reason). Anyway would give this my 12/10 recommendation to watch/ read of the year.
This theory makes sense too since the guy's motivation for attacking the students at the school was because his art got stolen. Which was basically the exact same reason as to why Shinji Aoba burned KyoAni's studio even though KyoAni didn't even steal his idea.
Kojima saw it so many times and has been raving about it since it was released. Lookback is going to continue inspiring and fueling so many people's passions.
Finally got out to watch it in theaters in the States. I gotta say, I was tearing up almost constantly through all the childhood scenes, but was surprisingly composed in the post-death falling action and conclusion. Which is sort of the opposite to what I was expecting. My interpretation of the ‘alternative future’ was, of course, yes she’s feeling guilty about Kyomoto’s fate and wondering if she had a role in causing it. She has the wish-fulfillment superhero moment when she saves her, and they end up becoming friends, albeit a decade later. But after that fantasy plays out, and she finally has the courage to walk into Kyo’s room; she sees her mementos of their childhood together, she composes herself and accepts that if they’d never met back then, they’d both have a void in their lives that the other had filled for so many years. And Fujino stoically walks home in the snow, and returns to work the next morning to draw all day. Because if she didn’t push herself to continue her life’s work, what was any of that joy and pain for, in the end? She had to put her nose to the grindstone and work to achieve both their dreams now. So the movie ends, with her quietly working alone, from morning until sundown, just her and her art.
I saw the movie in Japan a few weeks ago and I will just say. It might be my FAVORITE anime film to ever release. It was just that good. Seriously, if you ever get the chance, watch this film.
I appreciate the raw interpretation of what happens when tradgedy strikes and we automatically start blaming ourselves. "what if" I left her a shut in, would she still be alive? But as it turns out, we don't have the power to change fate and we shouldn't internalize blame for things out of our control. This feeling and thought comes up a lot in mental health and so I was touched by that part.
Actually, I have a different way to see the movie -- what if the young shut-in were AI personified? AI wants nothing more than to learn what it is to be human, like Fujino, which is what we have designed AI to do. That's why AI is our biggest fan, and Kyomoto is always in the supporting role. Then Kyomoto is killed by the ugly anger that creators feel about being imitated... yet AI is itself a creation of humanity and also an expression of our humanity. Is our relation to our creations not also beautiful and worth preserving? Do animators not breathe life into inanimate blank paper, yet creators are having a really difficult relationship with AI, as they are affected by the competition, by the question of why do humans create, and by watching the charts of sales, waiting to get the money, being pushed to make that 100,000 yen when they meet a deadline? This is an exploration of what it is to be human now, at this critical moment in the baby steps of AI possibly leaping into something we never believed quite possible...
I think my interpretation of Look Back is not only the story of Tatsuki Fujimoto, but a deep self-analysis on himself. He not only divided himself into 2 distinct character, rather he's potraying the 2 persona inside of him. One that wants to create stories, and one who wants to create art. But on his pursuit of having to make good stories that have to sell well, to earn a living. He felt like he killed his art. When Fujino said that she killed Kyomoto because she made her come out, that's what he really felt. He has achieved so much, but at the cost of his art side being dead. In the "what if" scenario, that's Fujimoto's imagination on if he could pursue his art, he could have achieved the same success. But the message of it was not to ponder and regret while looking back. We don't live in a utopian world where everything will go as our plans. Rather than looking back with regret, we look back to remind ourself. Things that has happened can never be repeated. What has been set in stone can't be rewritten. There's no use in regretting. So cherish what is here now. Move on from pain. So when we look back, we greet it with a smile. Fujimoto is a fucking genius.
It was either Joker 2 or Look Back. After hearing how bad Joker 2 was, it was an easy choice. I was happy seeing Look Back. I hope Fujimoto pushes to adapt Goodbye Eri to a film as the demand will grow.
I've read the manga, loved it, and there's another theory about how the manga is connected to tatsuki fujimoto's personal life, it could be about how fujimoto and one of his assistants yukinobu tatsu (the creator of Dandadan) went their separate ways, Tatsu worked on the background art of Fire Punch and Chainsaw man just like the character kyomoto in look back
I hadn't read Look Back before my cousin took me to watch Look Back. And my god the visual story telling was impeccable. The animation studio cooked up with the movie too, really good use of colours to sell the mood.

Just came from the theater, it was amazing! Even years after reading it, this was adapted so wonderfully that I laughed and got emotional in equal amounts!
More evidence towards Look Back being autobiographical is that the art university where Kyomoto goes is actually the same that Fujimoto went, Tohoku University of Art and Design in Yamagata.
I thought Joey and Aki saying "dwell" instead of "delve" was a bit but they do it so often that I'm starting to think they actually think dwell means delve.

Look Back is literally a 100/10!!!! I love Tatsuki Fujimoto and his work and this movie is the best. This might be one of my favorite anime movies of all time!! I can’t wait for the chainsaw man movie!!!
I think one thing that really resonates with me as an artist is how callous Fujino is towards art and basically calls it useless and a waste of time which depending on who you ask, is something artists do struggle with constantly. It's so easy to just stop creating and doing anything else.
I don't know what he is talking about with cinemas not playing it - it's been out less than two weeks and all the cinemas I've been going to are still playing it plenty. I do agree it was an amazing and beautiful film though. Truly a rare one of a kind experience. Glad I got to see it in cinemas right at release.
I think there is a little more to it and it all comes back to the parallel reality and the last 4koma. Kyomoto is the core inspiration of Fujino and I'm pretty sure the Kanjis on her name where not only just to express the name of Fjimoto but the fact that without this person he would be in a sports club with friends and spent more time with friends. After the parallel reality Fujino get a 4koma, that express what she would do if she was there which is pretty unreal. Kick in a manga style the murder, a guy who unalived Kyomoto cause she must had cheated. Here is the thing tho, when we go back to Fujinos work place we see a blank 4koma, putting it on a glass window behind the rich background of a city. My theory, the last 4koma, that express what she would do, was always that blank one she put on her window. The parallel reality is Fujinos fantasy going wild and reaching to the same conclusion she riched when she first met Kyomoto. It's because of her Fujino keeps drawing and everytims she looks back she will end up to that.
Masterpiece. But as the director already stated it won't get a US release because the runtime is too short. Hopefully it will be shown somewhere other than the festival circuit
Talking about movies, I watched the Mononoke movie yesterday at the Fantasia Film Festival and it was AMAAAZING! XD I'll be watching the tv series thanks to that
It just airing in my country yesterday, one thing that i can say is, this just an ordinary story told in an extraordinary way. And my lucky surprise iam the only one on the movie that watch this, so i got a whole theater for my self😂😂
I definitely loved the manga! So I'm hype to eventually watch the movie. But being Canadian I'm not sure how long that will take lol Also really enjoyed the video!
One of my favorite One shots, I hope we get an airing in the United States. I feel like look back, fire punch, and sayonara eri are fujimoto's best works, and i hope they get the credit they deserve. In my honest opinion those three works are way better than chainsaw man!
Joey watch the Josee the tiger, and the fish and make a video about it i did not expect it to be that good it was one of the best Anime Movies released
Reading the title i thought it was goodbye eri for some reason even though lookback was the one that got adapted Goes to show how cinematic fuji's works are
I dunno be that one, but this is a very TheAnimeMan content... On this channel, there could be vlogs and such, while on the main there could be a weebu content (I mean yeah, Joey has said that does not do "anime content" anymore, but when he does, he could have published it where it belongs).
It's been a while since I read the manga and I've been so out of touch with anime to the point that I didn't know there was an anime adaptation from that manga untill I watched this vid lol.
Even though I think Fire Punch and Chainsaw Man are quite flawed and weaker than what some people say (both are still solid 8/10 though) , Look Back and Goodbye Eri are actual Masterpieces. I REALLY respect Fujimoto as a media creator for both the 2 short and 2 long stories. Loved the oneshot. I KNOW I will love the movie. Goodbye Eri is a whole another level of Goated tho which also DESERVES a film.
I've read the one shot a while ago, but ngl i didn't understand much of it, I'm honestly just waiting for Sayounara Eri to be adapted into an anime format, i definitely enjoyed that one more.

Looking forward to this one
I read the manga when it came out and the movie still managed to mess with my emotions
Masterpiece. But as the director already stated it won't get a US release because the runtime is too short. Hopefully it will be shown somewhere other than the festival circuit
WHEN IS THIS MOVIE COMING TO THE US I CANNOT WAIT AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
I'm just standing under a waterfall right now don't mind me
The movie was so goooood! It teared me up especially that tragedy 😭
NICE SUNBATHER RECORD JOEY
Talking about movies, I watched the Mononoke movie yesterday at the Fantasia Film Festival and it was AMAAAZING! XD I'll be watching the tv series thanks to that
Didnt know you were a deafheaven fan. Nice to meet another
It just airing in my country yesterday, one thing that i can say is, this just an ordinary story told in an extraordinary way.
And my lucky surprise iam the only one on the movie that watch this, so i got a whole theater for my self😂😂
It hasn’t arrived to Portugal yet. I’ll try to watch it when it gets here. Usually unknown anime movies only stay like a week or two max.
Amazing video Joey.
i loved this movie so much i watched it 4 times in the cinema and listened to the soundtrack on a daily basis 😂
Look back was a Beautiful film 10/10
I hope this get an American release ;.;
Edit: Thanks for the recommendation!!! It was amazing!
It's a good watch definitely a recommendation. Good video to bro
He should make a separate anime channel, the way he reviews kinda good
I definitely loved the manga! So I'm hype to eventually watch the movie. But being Canadian I'm not sure how long that will take lol
Also really enjoyed the video!
when it will be available in “europe”?
He will watch anime and then upload it on his second channel instead of the one that's named "TheAnimeMan"
One of my favorite One shots, I hope we get an airing in the United States. I feel like look back, fire punch, and sayonara eri are fujimoto's best works, and i hope they get the credit they deserve. In my honest opinion those three works are way better than chainsaw man!
Is this just me or did it soud a bit like you were describing Asakusa and Mizusaki from "Keep your Hands off Eizouken"?
Joey watch the Josee the tiger, and the fish and make a video about it i did not expect it to be that good it was one of the best Anime Movies released
11:19 Mans literally recommended a BANGER of an album oh my god 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Looking forward to seeing if it gets picked up by a distributor for North America later this month at a film festival that I believe is next week.
IT'S PEAK 🙏🔥
Hoping this gets a US release so I can watch it!
You can't ignore the butterfly effect. It's on all of our lives.
Joeyyyy! I wanted to watch it but now i have to read the manga first.
I'll be back...
Have you by chance watched/read Blue Giant? I feel like that would make a great video too
羨ましすぎる。本当に観に行きたいんやけど。
I like one anime. City hunter. Masterpiece video
this thumbnail currently is gold.
Where can I watch the movie? I’ve read the manga but don’t seem to find the movie on any website that I use
It's not available in the US yet when it drops it'll show up on sites. im waiting too
@@ka44i okay thanks
Hideo Kojima endorses Look back animated movie.
Reading the title i thought it was goodbye eri for some reason even though lookback was the one that got adapted
Goes to show how cinematic fuji's works are
Hope that might get us some Fire Punch or Goodbye, Eri in the future 🔥
That does sound like a good movie. definitely want to watch it.
This movie has Kojima's seal of approval
As Hachiman would say, Chiba is great and the last bastion of hope in japan
I read Hachiman as Haachama lol.
ngl I appreciate these types of reviews. I finished watching the video haven't read the manga but now I'll be doing that
watching review after finishing the movie
I dunno be that one, but this is a very TheAnimeMan content... On this channel, there could be vlogs and such, while on the main there could be a weebu content (I mean yeah, Joey has said that does not do "anime content" anymore, but when he does, he could have published it where it belongs).
It's been a while since I read the manga and I've been so out of touch with anime to the point that I didn't know there was an anime adaptation from that manga untill I watched this vid lol.
Yo dude, Ranma 1/2 is returning🔥🔥😳
Its already out?
Fujimoto's characters speak in a roundabout way.
I wonder if joey also watched the first slam dunk movie
I've read the one shot a while ago, but ngl i didn't understand much of it, I'm honestly just waiting for Sayounara Eri to be adapted into an anime format, i definitely enjoyed that one more.
I cried my soul out because of that movie
5:49 yes it does
Someone else who is now motivated to draw more often? ^^
where can i find the manga guys?
