  • Beefeater, Beefeater, Beefeater... it's been a very long time. I haven't been to one in about 6 years and I've been asked to do a couple of lower rated restaurants so I've decided to go to the Beefeaster in Twickenham to see if the reviews are warranted.
    Please don't forget to like and subscribe to the channel.
    Hawksmoor, Blacklock and Miller and Carter are on the future steakhouse visits but if you have anymore, please let me know!

    I'd been a chef for over 40 year's classically trained & now retired the trade has been deskilled unfortunately .A local restaurant was recently advertising for a sous chef ' no experience necessary ' quite incredible probably the reason I don't eat out anymore .....saying that the reviews you're putting together are great and very enjoyable !

      All they have to do is heat up the preprepared dish from the factory, turning out the dishes for the catering trade. There are a number at it. Boil in the bag comes to mind.

      I don't see the point in eating out anymore... You can pay 20 quid for a meal and drinks extra and chances are you'll still be hungry and have to go to Macdonald's afterwards..... UK is awful these days for value for money..... and quality.

    Thanks Gary a fair review. I spent 20 years as a Manager and a Kitchen Manager for Whitbread and mainly Beefeater. It was an experience and I made a decent living out of it in the end. I left in 2014. Moved on now.
    I will say that it depends where you go, like any chain restaurant, but dining out has changed now. I feel they have had there time.
    Cheers

      Thanks for sharing. I agree, I think Beefeater has invariably been replaced by Miller and Carter for the Steakhouse to go to this isn't insanely priced (like a lot in London) and personally think it's had it's day. Hope you enjoyed your time working with them. Thanks for watching!

    Last time I went to a Beefeater, was around 5 years ago, had send my filet steak back twice as it tougher than shoe leather and finally they swapped it for a Sirloin steak. Great honest review as always, Gary. But it kind of proves my theory, they buy the cheapest filet steaks they can get hold of. Keep up the great work, mate!

    • @GaryEats
      @GaryEats  Рік тому +4

      You might be right. The fillet was genuinely inedible and I will eat pretty much anything (apart from mushrooms). I doubt I'll go again but if I do, it'll be the sirloin.
      Thanks for watching as always and commenting.

    Another great honest vlog Gary, nice one. As an ex butcher I cannot for the life of me understand how Beefeater can get a fillet steak so wrong, it should have been that tender you could of cut it with a spoon. I think it was an imposter myself and not fillet !! Keep up the great work and looking forward to the next one 👍

      Can I ask you a question as an ex butcher? I don't eat much meat but occasionally have a much looked forward to steak. I recently bought two rump steaks that were so tough as to be inedible. I threw them in the bin. The first time in my life I have ever done that. So my question is do butchers know when a steak is that bad?

    • @leemayell7570
      @leemayell7570 10 місяців тому +4

      Hi there, in theory there shouldn't be such a thing as a tough rump steak due to the presence of some fat, however if we cook it at too high a heat or slightly to long then this fat could be rendered out of the meat and cause the proteins in the meat to firm up, dry out and become chewy, tough and almost inedible. Low to Medium heat and cooking duration are key. Hope this is of some help to you.

    • @killforkylie
      @killforkylie 9 місяців тому +1

      @@leemayell7570 Thanks for getting back to me. I don't think it was the cooking as I didn't do anything different to usual. I like my steaks rare. I think I would have had to stewed it to make it edible. I have never thrown steaks away before..... that's how bad they were. Once again thanks for getting back to me.

    Looked like exactly what I was expecting it to be when I read you were at a Beefeater! To be fair to the person who "cooked" the meat, they probably had many orders on the go and I doubt they have had much quality training,most are on low hourly rates and are worked hard. I would have been worried as soon as the plate arrived in 10 minutes. 6 is generous Gary - more like a 3 from me. If possible a review on a Turkish restaurant would be ace and I know you don't do starters but if you do visit one you have got to try out Arnavut Cigeri - they are bloody lovely!

    Surprising result with the steaks, as fillet steak should be very tender - that’s why it’s usually so expensive. Rump is generally the cheapest and can be the toughest, but it has a much more pronounced beefy flavour than either sirloin or fillet. Of the three, the fillet should have been by far the most tender.

    Our local Beefeater is attached to a Premier Inn. We refuse to eat there anymore because it is just dire (we are fine diners so probably not the right customers for food) and it appears to be getting worse. We only go for a drink now. One of the workers told us they don't cook the food, it is just heated up. Apparently, there aren't any dedicated chefs and the staff take turns in working in the kitchen. There is always a shortage of staff and the whole place is in need of a total revamp. The outside tables and chairs are falling to bits and there are cigarette butts everywhere. It appears all these places are the same. I feel really embarrassed for guests that are staying.

    Have to say ive not been to a Beefeater for many many years until last week staying at a Premier Inn in Solihull and the Beefeater was adjoined. I had the Sirloin steak - medium, fries, mixed vegetables and one of their '74 sauces (habanero, mango and something). I was quite surprised at how lovely it all was. Im not a big beef fan, I'll normally pick another meat instead when eating out, so it was a very pleasant surprise. Its a shame theres no continuity across the chain so its a bit russian roulette how your meal turns out which isnt helpful when making a decision where to eat.

    I'm not sure which Woody Allen film it was but two New York ladies were discussing a new diner
    It went a bit like this
    "Have you been to that new place on the corner of 42nd street - the food is lousy"
    "Yeah , and the portions are tiny!!!!"
    Always makes me smile
    I am quite happy paying big money if the food is great - the memory will stay with you forever
    It sounds as though some people don't care much for food and perhaps just want to "be seen"
    Certainly before covid London michelin starred restaurants were serving the best and best value set menus on the planet
    Costs have soared since then but it no excuse for overpriced mediocrity
    Having said all that , we have just spent a few days in Amsterdam and l have never come across such an enormous rip off in my life - never again!!!!
    A great and helpful review as always

    Wrongly cooked filet steak at a guess, there's not much fat in a filet steak just tender meat, so if it's slightly overcooked it will go chewy, maybe add to your cutlery in case pack a food thermometer like the one you get with a Kelly bronze turkey at Christmas :)

    Hi there Gary. Sorry I could not get back to you yesterday with my running commentary on the Curry as I intended to as I just bought myself a new car yesterday, and was busy getting the Insurance and banking right. Well That Curry you had was to die for. What I wanted to know is have you had the Siri Lankan curries? The Siri Lankan curries I prefer to the Indian cooking (with the exception of Madras Curry of course). My Scottish wife cooked me a Beef Madras for dinner last night, which was out of this world. To accompany the meal, she cooked up (from a SL Recipe book) a dish called Battu Moju, which is an egg plant dish. I have had that dish previously in a restaurant and it is to die for. It has to however be cooked the popper way. I prefer to SL Mango Pickles to the Indian version, and mate; they have another dish called LAMPRIS (Pronounced LUMP RICE) Although if is a SL dish, the Siri Lankans do not know how to make the authentic dish. It was originally made by the Dutch Colonialists in what was formerly Ceylon, and that recipe handed down to their descendants. The dish has been corrupted by the local Singalese people and the most recent dishes I have had were just terrible. We have a Dutch Burgher neighbour who makes the authentic dish and WOWOW!!!!! Thats all I can say.
    OK mate, now for that Steak at Beefeaters. I would have given it 4.5 out of 10. There is no excuse for a good cook not to know how to cook a medium rare steak, considering that first dish you tried was MR. Just a bit of a side line mate; 56 years ago, when I was a Law Student, I took a part time job at a high class Italian Restaurant to earn a bit of spare cash. All other waiters were Italian, Yugoslav and Dutch. Here was the problem; I spoke with a thick Scots Brogue, and confused the blazes out of the others. One of the Yugoslav waiters wrote down the name of an order, thus. Steak Mr. Michael. I went to the kitchen and called out to the Italian chef, ONE STEAK MISTER MICHAEL, as the initials had not been explained to me. Upon hearing my call to the chef, the Yugoslav waiter, the restaurant proprietor and other waiters collapsed laughing. They then explained the docket said STEAK MEDIUM RARE MICHAEL. (there was a dish known as Steak Michael). Thereafter I was known no longer as JOCK but as Mr Michael.
    Take care my friend. Cheers!

    Yet another great food review video - where have I been? Really like your no nonsense style of review. [Aside: That fillet steak does worry me - tough?? A few years ago I was on a curry diet - nothing but curry related foods for a year. One treat was to cook up a home made curry base, and then drop in pieces of raw fillet steak that literally "poached" in the sauce for a melt in the mouth experience. Way too expensive to do that now, but it is depressing if this steak you have been served with is so tough ]. Mark.

    Gary, yes Michelin is not to be messed with. I asked for an email for you. Did you respond. Asked a rough location where you live did not respond. Reason being if you like Thai. You must try The Ancher pub in Burwell Cambridge. It’s literally 10 minutes walk from my house. Son is the Thai chef. It in my opinion is the most consistent extremely good quality food that you can eat. I go once twice a week and is ever so good. So a must try. They need Michelin to watch them! Iv told Joe landlord. So put it into your schedule and if you are going very happy to meet for a pint. It is a must try, but it is Thai not everyone likes it!😂😂

    It can be a lottery at times eating out and it’s not cheap. Sadly skill is something we seldom see these days, instead we get chains of restaurants that are average and charge a premium. The diversity in food we get today is good but the experience doesn’t always match up as it were. A good meal is something to enjoy but a bad meal can make you wonder why you should have to pay for bad experience that doesn’t need to arise. Often attention to detail is what makes the difference, things like cooking the chips long enough in clean oil, not rushing the order but getting the presentation correct and the process right every time. A Michelin star restaurant is good because of the effort and dedication put into the dish and attention too, sadly a restaurant chain doesn’t have the same focus and it notices.

    • @GaryEats
