- Welcome back everyone! Today, I've decided to take a trip into Surrey for the first time on the channel and visit The White Hart in Witley. I had a look at their menu before visiting and saw that they have some incredible good BBQ food and thought I'd give it a go and see what the fuss is about.

Looks like a very nice place. Fries should surely come with the burger not an extra charge ?
The burger looked a little uninspiring but you say it tasted good that's good enough for me.I like my burgers nice and pink. Normally guarantees juicyness. Mass catering chips are disappointing too.
The short rib looked delicious and a huge portion. Nice and juicy too.
I think the pricing is fair.
For me that's an 8 out of 10 too.
Excellent review again. My sister lives nearby so I might combine the visit .

The short rib looked amazing as for the burger very average and for the size very poor and the fries should come with the price of the burger but all in all great review gary as always
Not pink in the middle I rather have it well done not printing the middle that's not great I water rather have well done if it's a barbecue one I should have let the People decide how and it's going to be pink in the middle that's not good they should let people decide to have it well done BBQ place in Surrey got the people got their own style of tights has a lot of the burgers presented College the people like it well done or medium Legion when the burgers really tasty from Catherine private Weldon quality of toast in the burger the quality of taste in the burger so it's got a lot of salad dressing gown or Maya or garlic mayo in Carrington Marie Susan Carrington in Carrington today people
I was searching for any videos on the village I grew up in and you pop up Gary. I have been following your channel for about a year, so it was great to see you go to the pub where I had my first pint when I was 15. I reckon that heavy merry go round at the start of the video has been there since the 70's. Keep up the great work 👍🏻🍺

I wouldn't be very happy with unseasoned fries and no sauces or dips! You had a chance to ask the lady for some salt when she came over but you did that classic Brit thing of saying everything was fine. 😄
I've only just realised after this video that I asked for mustard and it never arrived! The ribs were too good to pay attention to anything else but you're spot on, I am a typical Brit haha! Thanks mate, all the best.

Don't normally cover the score first but i think 8 out of ten was bang on the money.
I won't lie as soon as the food came out i could not stop looking at that Short Rib 😋
What lost the two points for me, was that when you go to all that effort of Barbequing on site, then let yourself down on presentation, and condiments, (i-e horseradish for the short rib, salt for the chips)
Besides that i would visit anytime for the short rib alone.

Oh Gary, this place is a gem!!! We often have work lunches here. If you go again, take a friend and share one of their Meat platters, they are to die for, also their dirty fries come mixed with mac and cheese and pulled pork!!

Always good to see a proper cheeseburger that's not too big to fit in a 1 biter...my friends take the mess out of me for going on about burger ratios but I think it's an important factor to a good burger... keep up the good work mate👍🏻

The short rib looked very tasty and beautifully cooked. As you stated the burger was small in portion. Disappointing fries not been seasoned, but overall I agree with the 8 out of 10 score. Once again a great video to watch 👍👍

❤❤😂 You had me at "Can I have another go on the swings?" I'm 52. And that was best excuse for visiting! Burger didn't automatically come with chips, seems mean spirited. It looked so lonely on plate.😢 Agreed with another commentary, they should cook it to your like. But that rib!! Yessir! Juicy, meaty and generous. Gary, your doing a brilliant job - finding 'different' places to eat. Very impressive and not like the usual reviews we get. This looks fantastic - being 'expat' I cant sample these, but definately giving me ideas for cooking here in Portugal :) I have a BBQ in the garden, but this sort of thing will have to wait for summer now! Burger looks fab, and plenty of fries. Now the rib is epic... I'd have liked to see a bit of gravy with it... but nice idea to have pickles. OMG. Need! And the dog would like the bone.

@@GaryEats Hi Gary - I'm actually not on the mainland but way way out (in several senses) in the Azores. Life is good. I retired here 5 years ago age 61. Early retirement (normal working guy) meant less pension, but state pension kicks in shortly. But seriously, I would have been working until I dropped in the UK. So all is bliss. Live well on under 1000 Euros a month.Honestly, the only thing I miss about the UK is the (sometimes) great food and occasionally the convenience of a take-away. So your videos bring me joy and inspiration! Thanks for you uploads! 😄

Spectacular beef rib .that’s the flavour I don’t mind. Any cut of beef close to the bone has a superior taste,but this is my experience with it. Fantastic I thought.lovely surrounding too. Didn’t think £20 was bad for a quality and quantity meal either.

Looked good, Gary, but I agree with you, the burger could have been a bit bigger and they should have served, from my point of view, a proper portion of chunky chips and not unseasoned french fries. But the shortib looked fantastic, so the White Hart is definitely on our to visit list now, to try their barbeque. Another fantastic review, mate, keep up the fabulous work and speak to you soon! 👌❤️
Yes. I find the portion sizes of places these days to be much smaller than years ago. I've found a couple of new places to go this week and next that have much more value for money so that should be better. Cheers mate, would highly recommend giving it a go. Have a great evening - speak soon!
O thank God Gary your back in the land of the living , welcome back south where you belong , pub looked beautiful and food looked just awesome 👏 but why don’t they do decent fries , it’s not difficult to do thrice cooked chips , and as you say a better stacked burger , all good comments, then it would have probably been a solid nine points I reckon .

It looks another great pub, I do like salt on my chips, and I would prefer a well cooked burger, although I like medium rare steak, I would agree with 8 out of 10, I'm loving these places you find Gary, it's great x🤩

Lovely pub & good service makes for an enjoyable experience. The burger is my kind of burger - not too big but homemade with nice toppings. The rib looked amazing and no wonder you polished that off Gary !

Very fair score mate and I think all your observations are bang on.
Some kind of sauce is needed to compliment the chips and that salsa stuff on your rib plate to meld it all.
I'm seeing lots of food videos recently where hamburger type stuff is served on a brioche - hands up, never tried that, but I'm certainly going to.

This is my local and I go every week. Absolutely love it! Something different to standard pub food, and especially coming from London, this place sorts our cravings out. Food is delicious 😁 Highly recommend everything they do but my favourites are the KFC Wings and the short rib 👌

That short rib looked INSANE - nothing more needs to be said on that. Thought the burger looked tasty & it was quite nice to see a normal looking burger instead of the monsters that look impossible to eat without being part snake!

I have to concur with your score; although I marked it down a further point to 6.0, only because the Chips and that Hamburger was not up to scratch for me, and furthermore, because they were a bit stingy on the pickles. That beef rib looked YUMMO and was packed with beef and fats. The property was brilliant. Mate; you are going to have to start researching those buildings to see if the GHOSTS of the past inhabit the property or building. Funny that mate; when I was in England, many years ago; I used to support Surrey. My father bought be a PETER MAY AUTOGRAPH Stuart Surridge Cricket bat for my 10th birthday. That was such a sweet bat. I seasoned it with Linseed Oil; it was saturated with Linseed Oil and I'd only have to clip the ball which could not wait to get to the boundary. I brought it with me to Australia when we moved. I played club cricket here, and only every used my SS Peter May bat, which gave me many a century and half century, I gave that bat to my grandson Cameron, who plays cricket for the local club. I had a mate of mine who was a member of the Melbourne Cricket Club, to put my son Adam;s name down as a prospective member when he was born. AT age 22, he was accepted into the MCC which has a 25 year waiting list now, and he in turn nominated Cameron as a prospective member. So my old Peter May bat is still as good as gold. I remember watching the Test Match at Melbourne back in the 1960s when Peter May, Collin Cowdrey, Peter Richardson, Cyril Washbrook played. I remember the match at Old Trafford so well in 1956, (4th Test, Manchester, July 26 - 31, 1956, Australia tour of England) when Jimmy Laker took 19 wickets for 90 runs in both Australian Innings. Those were such happy days. Safe travels "old son".

Sitting in this place right now and writing my thought on my meal. It was fabulous!! Had the beef short rib rice bowl. So damned tasty. Friendly staff and reasonable price for what you get . I showed the owners this review. They didn’t know you’d been here Gary

So you keep fit before going in, with their game, "Find the right door" 🙃 It did look a homely place though! I do think 10 pounds for that burger is pretty steep, and if they advertise chips with seasoning, I'm surprised you didn't ask them where it was? The rib looked nice, the pickle that came with it was rather sparse, considering the price! Mind you I can never get over the price that is charged these days for cuts of meat that would of been used for mince in my Father's butchery days, but that's me! Seeing the rest of the prices on the menu it's not somewhere I would go! My Mrs loves ribs, but for £20, she would want the whole pig, lol! Glad you enjoyed the food though, great vid as usual, nice of them to have freshly cut the grass for your visit!
Haha. Well, I've been told that I look like a gardening presenter many times on here now so it's only right they cut the grass for me... lol. Honestly, I asked for mustard and completely forgot about it when tucking into the food!

A lot of pubs where I'm from would give fries and a small side salad as a side, as standard, especially if the burger was that size at that price. That short rib looked absolutely fantastic though.

What a lovely looking boozer!! As for the grub….the rib looked extremely tasty,but a score,that’s expensive.
The burger and chips looked like a kids meal!! As for the cooking of the burger,having it medium rare is a risk I wouldn’t take….steak medium/rare all day long,burgers contain harmful bacteria when not cooked thoroughly….anyway,another great location and content…. I’m spreading the word!!
Hi Danny. Thanks mate. The quality of the meat is very important when it comes to medium rare burgers. I would never have a medium rare burger if the meat was not quality but I do agree with you, it adds a risk. Have a good one, all the best.
Quality of the meat has nothing to do with it. If ground meat is exposed to airborne bacteria you have a problem if you don’t cook it thoroughly ☹️
me too, raw mince isn't good
I have to say that I have been eating burgers medium rare here in the States since I arrived here58 years ago, and touch wood I have never become sick from a burger.It’s the only way to get a really juicy burger.I also thought that burger looked a normal size,at least for the ones served in most restaurants in the States.
It’s amazing that a gastropub doesn’t go gastro overhaul with its food on everything you see here ! Gastro means ‘ Stomach ‘ … then fill it is what I say !! the fries looked just lame and the burger was pretty poor ! .. BUT the short rib looked just a fantastic piece of meat .. so what happened here .. ?? I eat here reguarly as i live down the road, tried everything on the menu. Id advise the dirty fries rather than normal fries they are loaded with mac n cheese spring onions amd burnt ends ( sometimes smoked tukey which is insane ) i usually have the bbq sharer tray with all the meats and dirty fries . Always a winner

That’s very British to eat a beef rib with a knife and fork, here in Texas we just pick up the bone with both hands and take a bite out of it like you’re eating a corn on the cob, haha! Great video and keep them coming, I can’t wait to see what else London and the rest of the UK have to offer!

I'd agree with other comments here, excellent short rib, of which I am a fan, but the burger did not seem to be anything to write home about. I totally agree with your marking, which I think is very fair.
I would have liked to have seen some ash-cooked baked potatoes on the menu, I think they may have missed a trick there as fries are all too common these days on a menu. As you mention, they are just fries and generally, there is not a vast amount you can say about fries. Were they real hand-cut fries or just generic frozen ones?

I personally don't like when restaurants tell you how the will cook your meat, it's up to you since you are paying for it. You are also taking a bit of a risk with your health, the Food Standards Agency has info on why burgers should always be fully cooked, and the pub should def not offer them as standard unless they have very tight procedures in place. I ran restaurants for over 20 years, and along with many other well known establishments we would ask customers to sign a waiver if they ordered a medium rare burger.
My only theory is that they have very tight procedures in place and the quality of the meat is very good. It's not something I'd do with lower quality meat. Thanks for the feedback!
A quality home made burger is essentially just ground beef and seasoning. It's perfectly OK to have medium rare. Now, if you're talking your standard chain restaurant wholesale burger then highly likely no.
They can sous vide the burgers for the doneness at which they serve them, then just sear them. This ensures that they're pasteurised.

The spare rid looked primitively delicious, a carnivores dream. The chips/fries were a write off and the burglar looked satisfactory, just. A fair mark.

@@GaryEats i cant wait gary could you possibly look up the schole inn in norfolk where i drive my bus past every day. 2 books been written on it apparently well haunted. and i hear they do an amazing carvery on a sunday. take a look. the books were called the SCHOLE EXPERIMENT . hope ive spelt that correct im yorkshire they spell things different here in norfolk lol
I 2nd guessed you on that score Gary. The food looked decent. Points off for burger size and no chip seasoning. I would've preferred a nice red wine reduction dipping sauce rather than pickles with rib tbh.

As stated by others, burgers should never be eaten “medium rare”, definite risk of food poisoning.
I’m a victim of this in Monte Carlo of all places at Planet Hollywood, I returned the burger twice asking for it to be cooked properly… spent two days in bed and the WC…

Your score was generous. Few here in the US would recognize that as having been a barbecue meal. Should you ever find some Texans that have moved to the UK to set up shop, they will set things right, as a matter of pride.

Swings and roundabouts Chris, haha. I think the fries should be knocked for a point and the portion size for the burger/fries as well. The rest (short rib) was splendid mate.
Loved this review, heard this place is really good over the years but never been!
Also when the waaitress came + asked if everything as ok why didn't you mention about the chips with no seasoning on them and the mustard situation!
I would of mentioned it straight away when the waitress came over. I ill def come here when next near that part of Surrey!
