There's a problem with the Mac sounds. Macs have only had sounds while starting up, never while shutting down. And the type of startup chime is dependent on what machine you have because it's built into the hardware. So, in other words, operating system is not where the startup chime comes from, rather, the computer's built-in ROM. The current Mac startup chime was introduced in February 1997 on the Power Macintosh 9600. So, it's been awhile since a new startup chime has been released.
On the Mac OS prior to OS X you can create a sound file or whatever and put that into the "Shutdown Items" folder, which is located in the System Folder.
@sc4reactor Sorry to break it, but Mac OS and Mac OS X don't have a shutdown sound. You used another Mac OS startup sound. I have a Mac and it just show the background (Leopard 10.5 shutdown), and in the other Mac OS X (including (witch I have) Snow Leopard) the same thing happens (shutdown), but the screen turns blue (like logging out or switching accounts on a Mac).
Windows ME is based on the Windows '98 codebase, and eventually DOS. Windows 2000 is based on Windows NT. They're very different beneath the interface.
I thought those shutdown sounds for the mac were actually the startup sound from the Performa line or is it both? Never heard that from a mac shutting down before.
i remember when wondows 2000 came out....... good times..... good times........ i love its sound starting and shutting, i miss it so much now that i have an imac...... it was slow, but i get a weird feeling when i listen or see old stuff... like the n64 too..... i just liked the old stuff... but if it was only faster......
reactor....where did you find the Windows NT Workstation 5.0 Beta 2 sound from. i have been looking all over for it and i can't find it. let me know. thanks. by the way....awsome movie.
well thats strange i have been using a mac since mac os 9 on my imac g3 and i used panther, tiger and leopard after that (on a new mac of course) and still never heard one! i use snow leopard now! :)
even though the windows chicago picture is not shown i tried it i will describe it to you... its exactly like windows vista's bar except its like classic
Mac OS 9 was a cool system. dont mock it! it sure did kick windows 98's ass! and it invented the multi user login screen that we all now today! (anythin b4 it just had a boring box that u type ur name/password in)
transformersguy23- that's really weird... a major glich- my computer has never done that- i have a xp but its soooooooooooooooo slow and i serioulsy have to wait a half hour to start using it when i turn it on...
When something goes wrong in Mac you are equally screwed... Kernel panic much? I had about 4 panics in 7.5.3 and 2 in 7.6.1 - solution? Full restore didn't work. I had to take it into Tekserve. A full restore doesn't fix everything with Windows either. Each OS has its ups and downs. Now lets both stop defending our favorite OSes b/c they aren't paying us, and it isn't a religion. Microsoft dividends haven't come out recently, and I haven't gotten my money.
You compare sound startup in windows system, with Mac Hardware sound If you really compare the hardware sound a startup, Pc only "beep" and no more today :p
But can you play all of your games? Do all of your programs work? Solitaire games don't count. I am talking real games like GTAIV or DMC4 or Spore or something :
@iToasterman the comment that you replied with is over a year , i'm no more a fan of OSX after what they did to Lion. i use windows after all, that comment is just saying which is simpler but still prefer windows one
Dude, I have used Mac since System 7! I even have a have a hard drive on my computer with the Mac OS on it! But there is probably a reason a boot into Windows more often than I do with Mac. More programs, xCircuit, MATLAB, eclipse++, notepad++ - I don't use something shitty like i fucking Life. I use real programs - that is probably why I dis Mac or Linux as often as I do Windows. Ok? This is the last post I will be making on this. Windows > Mac in usage and marketshare. Nuff said.
WRONG MAC SOUND A THE END WORNG WRONG WRONG mac sounds are simple and on a completely seperate note... seriously, Windows NT Workstation 5.0 (beta) sounds like a truck running into a feild af marbles... wtf
said like a true maclover. no there is no ilife for linux, however, there are several 3rd party programs that could easily stand in its place. such as photoshop or gimp -_- or a comprehensive movie maker. shit you can get along fine without iLife. Only people who can't properly use a computer to its fullest extent get a Mac and use the OS. If I buy a Mac, I'm wiping the OS and installing Windows. dude, there is an alternative for everything on linux. have you ever used linux?
I love the Vista beta sounds. They're so pretty. :D
Those sounds come from a Samsung theme from Windows XP. They were not used in Windows Longhorn. Windows XP sounds were used.

Mac doesn't have a shutdown sound. That "shutdown" sound is actually the startup for the Macintosh Performa and early Power Macintoshes.
Windows startup sounds are all musical except for that annoyting tada
Mac startup sounds are simple and get sadder and sadder through the years
On the Mac OS prior to OS X you can create a sound file or whatever and put that into the "Shutdown Items" folder, which is located in the System Folder.
Yup, my PowerBook 190 agrees with you. Woodwind chime ftw.
damn i just can believe all this was just years ago and now they are evolutionaring

I like the implication that Macs have shut down sounds.
PROTIP: They don't.
Windows 95 and Windows 98: Many memories ;)
I love the song that goes in background
I love the windows 2000 startup and shutdown
@l3lo0dk1ng its the windows xp installation music, you can find it in C:/windows/system32/oobe/images/title
The startup sounds on Apple computers are made by the hardware natively.
the old apple computers had the the crash sounds, like the apple IIe and things like that
its a hidden windows song, to find it go to: C:\WINDOWS\system32\oobe\images\title.wma in your files

@Thesaakeman yep but its the same as vista in look
it was the windows 95 beta released in 1993
Computers nowadays don't have startup or shutdown sounds.
Windows 10 and 11 still have startup sounds; they're disabled by default.
My PC Starts up to The Windows 98 startup sound and shutsdown to the win 98 shutdown sound.
I hope your smart enough to know this, but the startup sound was specific to the Mac model itself. not the OS.
i'd go crazy if i ever had a pc with windows nt 5.0...
thats because it was only on the BETA version of windows VISTA
even though the windows chicago picture is not shown i tried it i will describe it to you... its exactly like windows vista's bar except its like classic
it was the Beta version of windows VISTA

I have Vista Home Premium and it doesn't make that start up or shutdown sound. Is there a way to change it?
Anyone know which of the Windows startup sounds is the one composed by Robert Fripp?
What's the difference between Windows 2000 and ME?

@iToasterman the comment that you replied with is over a year , i'm no more a fan of OSX after what they did to Lion. i use windows after all, that comment is just saying which is simpler but still prefer windows one
Windows Longhorn ( The VISTA Beta ) has a startup and shutdown sound.
Those sounds actually came from a Samsung theme for Windows XP from 2003. Longhorn used Windows XP sounds.
what is with the roblox (kinda) fanfare theme....
Windows 95 beta
but mac doesn't have shut down sound :S
Nope, Windows 95 and 98. There was an Office 97 though.
