I've heard it's a great value reel, although I'm pretty much in okuma guy for everything under a 6000 series. my long surf rod has the Penn Sargus which I love. Penn also has incredible customer service on returns and warranty... looks like you hit a home run 🤙🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Trust me I was very close to getting the Okuma Rockaway live liners but I have wanted the pursuit for a while and I’m happy with my decision! Okuma makes great products.
Nice video. I recently bought the Penn Pursuit 4000 Combo with the 3-Piece rod. It came with a nice 32” long travel case. It’s a sturdy zippered bag with a hard liner to protect the rod and reel. Would I put it directly in airline baggage? No, it doesn’t have that much protection.
I had Penn pursuit lll 5000 reel, Old drag washers, I caught my first shark 7ft long reel got super hot best damn reel you can buy for money I just purchased the penn lv 6000

i got lucky and found a guy selling brand new penn pursuit4 4000 and 6000 reels for cheap. $30 for the 4k and $40 for the 6k. since he didnt have any 8000 i went to the local walmart and bought the 10 foot pursuit combo that has the pursuit4 8000 reel already and it was just over $93 total out the door. freaking love this thing with 50pound braid but will spool 80 pound braid next time.
Dude!! I’m stoked to hear of your experience. So far I’ve only seen big upgrades with the pursuit 4 compared to the pursuit 3 which was a workhorse for its affordability. Hope the new setups catch you many many big fish. Tight lines!
Why mono? I was fishing on the beach last weekend north of the inlet and jumped 4 tarpon. Alas didn’t land any. Had a 6000 Fierce and 15lb mono. 80 lb leader. My thought was would it be better to have 40 pound braid? I’m an old-school mono guy but I’m thinking about getting into braid thanks for the videos
Mono and braid are both good I prefer mono for any fish that runs and jumps like pompano I play them soft and the more stretch the better. I fish 20# and 15 for the cast-ability! When done right you can launch them pretty solid and much easier to work with when the weeds are around as well. User friendly is a bonus when I’m running trips!
Great video! I might pick up one of these in a 9ft to try my hand at surf fishing with artificial lures. Might be the best bang for my buct till i get used to saltwater fishing.
@@EastSideSurfFishing do you ever artificial lure fish with light tackle? Like a 7ft or 8ft with 3000 reel. If so what would your recommendations be for that setup for a rod reel combo
@@EastSideSurfFishing cool deal man! Thanks for that info im gonna try that combo out too here in nc with some casting spoons and some jigs and see what i can stir up. Keep up the great content!
Both style of fishing require specific tackle. A 9 foot pier rod will not work offshore nor will a 6 foot boat rod work at the pier. Get yourself something in the 7 foot range medium heavy 15-30 minimum and you’re in business to start. Best of luck
Always wanted one in 5000 size...but after fishing the penn conflict ii....that reel turned me away from penn plastic reels. It had a bunch of flex and the gears would bind when reeling in a big fish. Just don't know how much better or worse this 50 to 60 reel would be over there 175$ reel was.
@@hman5715 they work well and can handle a good bit of abuse. Make sure to wash/rinse your gear off after those surf fishing trips to get longevity out of your purchase 😀
I've never tried an 9oz sinker and 65 braid for sharks. The thrill of catching a brute fish on light tackle in the same time it does someone with heavy tackle is awesome and it's amazing teaching someone else the techniques.
What is the Penn Pursuit, the rod or the reel? Yes I'm that uneducated about it, tell me everything. And if it's the reel, tell me what kind of rod to use with it. I would like to get some brand new saltwater fishing gear, but I'm not really too sure what I should get for a little inshore, & pier/bridge? I do own two half decent size I would say medium to heavy rods, and not too sure about the reels but I think they're pretty big as is I can say. But I was just wondering if there was anything that I could use in like say like retention pond bass fishing and little tributaries that come off the St Johns river. I'm not sure if that salt or brackish, it's not real near the ocean. I just am totally up in the air as to what kind of rod / real do I need if I'm just doing the inshore, and ponds and rivers that aren't salt? Is there one rod that I can use for all of that? Or do I have to consider getting something different switching from freshwater to salt? Sorry this is so long but like I can't even think of what I'm trying to ask you because I'm pretty much lost in that respect. I know how to fish bass, freshwater trout, cats, you name it, you could probably ask me for a few tips, but I have no idea what to do for brackish, saltwater in shore fishing. Anything you can help me out with I would greatly appreciate it.Thanks again, & God bless!
The Penn Pursuit IV is the REEL and Accompanying rod. Penn created the rod to sell the reel as a combination set. For lighter inshore and pond fishing you don’t need to get anything over a 3000 sized reel. Once you are fishing places with structure and current then you need heavier tackle (piers/bridges). Penn sells the Pursuit IV as a combo in smaller sizes I’d definitely check them out. Put 12# mono or 15# braided fishing line with a 20# mono leader and any lure of choice (for whatever you’re targeting) and you will be all set to go fishing.

6k! More line retrieve/ capacity & casting distance when fishing a full spool of line.
Would you recommend a 5000 or 6000 size for cat fishing/ pier fishing
5000 would probably be just fine for that. If you need more line go with the 6000
