  • My 1984 Porsche 928 S has a blown head gasket and has suffered catastrophic engine damage. In this video, I prep the new engine for install and dabble with some modifications.

Is there a difference in the two engines or is the second just in better shape?

These are the exact same type of engines. The old engine is dumping coolant out the exhaust. It may be as simple as a headgasket but I suspect serious warping and/or cracking. The new engine is in much better shape and came from a trusted source.

@@Rurik_JustCruzn Gotcha. Both 4.5? I would guess head gasket too. My cam towers are both leaking, so I'll be doing top seals and timing belt soon. I'll most likely do the head gaskets while I'm in there. Coolant in oil typically a 944 issue.

Just a heads-up in case you didn't know... There's a couple of water pump bolts that go into the water jacket and need a little non setting thread seal (e.g. hylomar blue). Also, one of the timing belt tensioner bolts needs sealing with as it goes into the oil gallery (again hylomar blue will do but there's a special Locktite product that Porsche recommend). Hopefully you already did this off camera. Great videos. Cheers!

Thank you for kindly bringing this to my attention. I was aware of the tensioner bolt needing sealant but was unaware of the other bolts. Much appreciated.

Nice video, that air valve just has a sliding bimetallic spring that closes as the engine heats up to add bypass air for cold starts. It doesn’t control the idle dynamically like later engines or other modern cars.

Why remove the cold start regulator?

What engine stand are you using or does a regular one work ? Just got a head gasket leak
On my 4.5 and wondering if my stand for my Chevy would work lol

Hello Christian. Most engine stands would be suitable and will mount to the bell housing. The only recommendation I have is to use a heavy duty stand on 4 caster wheels. Our stand was only rated for 750 lbs and had 3 casters wheels. The weight of this engine demolished the single front caster.
