  • Video about assembling BMW V8 engine.
    Bottom end is 4.4l M62 and cylinder heads are from M60 4.0
    M60 has higher lift and longer duration camshafts, dual valve springs and dual row timing chain.

      I think same. M60/M62 aint so bad engines. Yes, they have problems with cylinder, but so far if cylinder are okay, they are strong and great engines

    I was wondering what torque specs did you use for the crank bolts and head bolts? Also are those OEM bolts or something else?

    Nice work...I was not aware that the m60 cams were a more sporty then the m62 .. would nice to keep us updated on how it performs

      Thanks! Well yeah, M60 cams has little bit more duration and valve lift. Not so much, but still possible to pick up few ponies :D

    I’ve just rebuilt my m60b40, but you done it much professionally. Oil injector I have never seen

      M60 doesnt have oil squirters. The 4.4 had them later as far as i can tell

    Awesome video, I have a quick question for you though. I'm currently building an m62 of my own and having trouble finding information on the main cap spacer bushings that sit against the block. Did you replace these at the time of the rebuild? Thanks

    You wouldnt happen to have the part# for the center sprocket for the primary timing chain would you? I have an e39 '99 wagon and a 2000 740i with the m62TU I've been toying with the idea of swapping out the center U guide with a chain sprocket.

      Thanks! For assembly and disassembly I use goodson replica bench, that makes installing and removing valves easier. For valve seat surfacing I have Mira vgx21 and for valves Robins Vr5. Nothing special yet, every month try to improve and buy better tools to offer better quality

      Send me an email hans@rkz.ee and I give you parts list that is needed for overhauling. M62 bottom and m60 heads, you can use m62 timing gears and chains, only need to modify timing covers lil bit.

    Fck yes its about time...i been looking all over. For thr past 5 years i get to know those m62 very well. I wanted to know if anybody ever built one cuz im going the same route...
    P.S please list list the critical tools i would need...beside the timing tool kit...

    for the M62 block, did you have to do any machining to fit the double timing chain idler gear or does the M62 block have the mount and threaded holes already setup to mount that?

      Everything is already there. The m60 stuff bolts straight up. There is an oil feed hole that lubriates the U guide on the m62 block that needs to be tapped and blanked with a bolt but other than that everythig can be transfered across 😎

    at the end you could show whole engine how it looks around, each side, not some zoom like you did. And even better would be if we can hear it like it works. I understand it was maybe not your engine so it could be problem to hear it. But at least you could show like this engine looks complete.

    Did you apply anything to the valve cover gaskets to help them seal? I replaced mine because they were leaking oil, and they started leaking again (mostly from the half-moon areas).

      You didn’t seat it properly
      Add a lil sealer on the half moons and corners

      Or your valve cover is warped

      Yes, you need to add seal on half moons and then it should be okay. And ofcorse, you need to tighten valve covers with right torque. Its really easy to rip cover bolt threads from cam caps and its pain to ass repair

      @@beukye This is a huge one most miss. If your covers are all flaky and swollen looking, just replace them. They are likely warped and will seep from the half moons and also the grommets.
      Poor design on these covers. No bolts at the rear. Could have used at least 1 to help with clamping force.

    Did you use the timing procedure for the M62 or the m60 engine?

      The timing procedure is pretty much the same for both. Same locking jigs used. Only difference is the balance shaft/sprocket on the M60 vs ghetto U guide rail on the M62.

      Yes, the TU block can be used. The TU has distinctive valve reliefs on piston crowns.

      Not my decision. It had mechanical trhottle from factory. M62TUB engines has electric throttle

      Yes. There are a lot of sleeved M62 blocks here in Poland. It is often the only option as these engines are known to eat their cylinder walls.

    9:19 a vary bad idea to put an internal hex anywhere on the engine, especially in that place. They also look to me as inox, which is also a very bad idea because electrochemical corrosion between aluminium and inox is extremely high.

      The risk of the oil pump nut coming off is a bigger risk.

      @@southothehighway He's talking about the valley pan cover in the Vee of the engine.
      I don't personally see an issue with with using an Allen bit bolt on there. If torqued to spec, you shouldn't have a problem.
      If they are indeed stainless steel (inox), that could definitely be a problem however.

    yeah so that timing system was too reliable so they had to replace that central upper sprocket with that stupid U guide on the TU version. techincal upgrade my ass xd
