What I love about this trick is that there's really no "magical effect." Teller takes out and lights a cigarette. I mean, other than the apperance of the lemon, and the disappearance of the cig at the end, there's really nothing to see here, except how beautifully Teller can make something complex look simple.
It's the art of parable, using a simple and elegant example to thoroughly explain a simple concept. The point here is to convey that a very simple act can carry with it a deception, and embody all the principles behind that deception.
I figured out how Teller did the lemon trick. When he turns to show the audience that the red ball is in his right hand, he takes a lemon out of his suit pocket and palms it in his left hand. When he drops the ball into his left hand, it is above the lemon. He then tosses the lemon into his right hand at the end, palming the ball and ditching it in his pocket. If you pause at around 1:57, you can see the lemon drop into his hand Hope this helps
As a musician, for me the _real_ magic there was how Penn was able to play the bass perfectly, while talking about something completely unrelated and in no sync with the music at the same time - I still can't do _that_! :/
Eddie Icelander Haha, no, that's understandable. I suppose that's the real light of humanity. Some are capable of what others are not. I've always loved this act either way.

That's the whole point of Pen and Teller...they tell you how tricks are done and still mess with your head. The string trick they do at their show is astounding; and the saw-in-half trick is hilarious.
Fun Fact: One of their guests on Fool Penn&Teller talked about how he saw that trick on tv as a kid and that's what got him into magic. So they remade it.
How many of you observed that at 3:33 he took a thumb cap in his left hand. Then shoved the burning cig into the thunb cap using his right thumb. Put off the fire ..then wear the thumb cap on his right thumb. 3:36 His right thumb is thicker and longer than his left thumb. Excellently done.
Damn. And because we thought cigs are usually long and couldn't be hidden by a thumb we didn't even look at it. Turns out the routine is long enough for it to burn to just long enough to be crushed into a thumb cap easily enough...
I know a lot of their thing (especially Penn) is to demystify magic in a way, but I think it's such an important touch that every once in a while Teller does something truly cool and mesmerizing, even if just because it makes you think about all the tricks of magic they just taught you and attempt to apply your newfound knowledge. always liked how Teller has a little more of that old-school magician flair than Penn who's a lot more blunt, comedic, and in-your-face. I'll never forget seeing him rub his hands together in a fishbowl to turn gold coins into real, living goldfish. or seeing him cut the shadow of a plant with a knife and the real plant's leaves get severed. and he does it all without saying a single word! love his humble little smile too.

During this show its clear that Teller really is superior to Penn, which goes to show that him being silent is only to even the field... which is beautiful.
Penn will be the first to admit Teller is the magical genius of the duo. Penn has said as much over and over in interviews. Teller's silence comes from performing in front of rowdy audiences. He found that by not speaking the hecklers would eventually shut up and pay attention to the performance.
Penn would agree with you but I think he definitely serves a purpose in the duo. He's the charismatic one (lol, most of the time) and makes the show much more engaging. He does a lot more of the physical feats too (juggling broken bottles, etc.)
+Sieran the Fox Oh yes... Maybe, maybe Penn never did any magical trick at all... I'd have to check all the footage for that and it's a strong claim. But maybe he's only doing all the mundane things (albeit tough ones, like juggling), while Teller is doing all the important bits. They still work together so well.
Penn refers to himself as "Carny Trash" and, when asked, says he's a juggler. Penn is good in his own right and certainly does "magic" as well, but Teller is in a class by himself when it comes to sleight of hand and illusions. Penn is an excellent front man and stage presence. I mean, what better misdirection could a quiet, 5'9" magician have than a loud 6'6" partner???
Went to see them in Vegas several years ago. After the show, they were in the lobby greeting everyone and autographing show programs. And yes, Teller talked. Both are gentlemen and treat fans well. The magic wasn't too shabby either.
The only thing I can think of is that the lemon isn't thrown at all, it's actually an animation on the back screen because it disappears right at the screen end.
They have done this trick over the years. I saw the earlier versions, it's amazing how they really honed and refined this trick. It was a nice trick years ago but it is truly wonderful with the improvements.

Thanks for sharing this amazing and well rehearsed act. The hard work is evident :) 3:30- Take the fake thumb/Thumb Cover out of the left pocket 3:33- Distraction/Miss-direction showing cigarette so that the audience pay attention on cigarette and not the thumb cover he is holding in left hand. 3:34- put off the cigarette pressing it against the thumb cover filled with water. 3:35- wear the thumb cover on the right hand thumb, which is visible in video 3:36- exhale the smoke out of the mouth which was inhaled in the last puff, making it look like as if the smoke is coming from the hand. 3:39- Thumb cover visible on right hand thumb :P
Mark Arkel van it got put out when he stuff him thumb in the thumbtip..just like how smoker put out their cigarette, but he use the thumbtip to put it out..
That was so, so clever. Moments later, Penn describes "misdirection", while Teller points. And it seems, after close inspection, that Teller isn't actually doing anything other than pointing. So it's like super-misdirection. They misdirect our attention not from a specific point on the screen, but from a specific point in time. The more strongly we are focusing, the less time we can focus for. If we know exactly when to do it, we might catch it. But Penn establishes that we can trust him to tell us when to really pay attention, and when it's safe to let our guard down. Bringing it up _after_ the fact is a bit of a flex. I love it. These two are such fantastic showmen. And I just love how the "effect", if you're not paying attention to the illusion, isn't some impressive thing. He stomped out a cigarette and lit a new one, it seems. Nothing spectacular or out of the ordinary.
I love how beautiful this trick is. Just the combination of the smoke, the music and just how fluid it is makes the trick wonderful to watch. Another trick of Teller's that I'd love to see a full video of it Teller's rose trick, it just has this weird gory sense of beauty to it, but I've never found a full recording of it.
I think this and the cups and balls are my favorite Penn & Teller routines. You know you're badass magicians when you can still wow the crowd while revealing everything you're doing.
Saw them a few years ago. Love Penn and Teller. Came out to mingle with their fans after the show and do autographs and pictures. The whole show was fantastically fun. I very much want to see them again the next time I hit up Vegas!
sitting 30 feet away in the audience you wouldn't be able to notice the red ball or fake thumb... you wouldn't even be able to notice if you couldn't play it back. Also Teller silent act such as Tom and Jerry gives you a comical point of view of his funny personality, which throws you off your game to help better give you the illusion.
He doesn't talk because he used to get heckled and not trusted. He found not talking would make people trust in what he was doing and focus more by being mesmerized by with what he does.
These guys are true artist and gentlemen. Someone tried to cut infront of us for a photo with them after the show and they weren't having it. They are good to their fans. I'll be a fan for life.
Me: Magic is when you fool people into thinking you just did the impossible. Teller: Me: One of us is completely missing the point, and I'm actually confused about who it is.
What a wonderful performance, instructive and seemingly simple but boy when he puts it all together, it’s blink and you miss it. And I’m very grateful for you making this easy to find.
The first palming with the red ball was so good that even in slow-mo I can't see it! It gives the perfect impression that if the red ball had remained in his right hand it would have fallen in the ground! I guess he made the other ones more obviously on purpose
Luiz Soranco de Paula Sarchis the same sleight of hands is used in the famous cups and balls routine. Penn and Teller has their own version of cups and balls. I'm sure they've practiced that palming at least a couple thousand times.
If you'r interested ut's a technique called "the french drop" and if executed perfectly by a master of sleight of hand like teller and followed by a perfect palm and misderection it's very convincing
The real magic is you paying close attention to Teller perfom a trick while you enjoy music being played by Penn live and somehow forgetting it's him playing.

Penn and Teller are masters not just of magic but of showmanship in general. It's a true joy to see their craft.
During this show its clear that Teller really is superior to Penn, which goes to show that him being silent is only to even the field... which is beautiful.
Not to even the field I think, for performing without words requires an even greater talent where your every movement requires greater consideration.
Where the fuck did the lemon go. It disappeared mid-air I swear.
Damn you fvcking right! Lol
+Chandler Gloyd whoaaa 'sup twin
yeah lol watched on 1/4 speed and it is gone :D
I think he actually tossed it back wards. And into some sort of trapdoor or something.
Penn is literally a genius in the science of stage magic, Penn & Teller might be the best magic duo of all time
These guys failed miserably....
At trying not to make smoking look cool
I'm with you man. I'm thinking about picking it up because of this act..
What, huh, how much is the pack?? Yeah, no. Nevermind..
B V you know he was making a joke?
r/wooosh
maybe read the whole comment before you make yourself look this stupid
@@bv2745 it wasn't even a sarcasm and you got r/whooshed, good job mate
@@bv2745 wait dude what? it was a joke... like; "These guys failed miserably... AT TRYING NOT TO MAKE SMOKING LOOK COOL" HAHAHA." But yeah you're kinda right I did fail in life a bit that's why I'm responding to a comment on a comment that I made one year ago.
the song is cool, "palm, switch, simulation, misdirection ..."
Nice profile pic dude. I actually saw that exact one on r/quityourbullshit
Penn is the funniest magician I've ever seen and the way the guy talks is the epitome of confidence... Teller is the perfect companion cause well, he has all the tricks!
this is easily one of the best things to watch ever
1:08 me walking in the house high asf
That cracked me up 😂🤣
WHERE DID THE LEMON GO AT 2:03?!?
Thanks for sharing this amazing and well rehearsed act. The hard work is evident :)
3:30- Take the fake thumb/Thumb Cover out of the left pocket
3:33- Distraction/Miss-direction showing cigarette so that the audience pay attention on cigarette and not the thumb cover he is holding in left hand.
3:34- put off the cigarette pressing it against the thumb cover filled with water.
3:35- wear the thumb cover on the right hand thumb, which is visible in video
3:36- exhale the smoke out of the mouth which was inhaled in the last puff, making it look like as if the smoke is coming from the hand.
3:39- Thumb cover visible on right hand thumb :P
The real magic is how a lit cigarette doesn't burn a false thumb...
@@omershamir8332 it is no magic. It is called absence of oxygen in covered pouches.
Load.. misdirection... lung cancer... load... simulation... misdirection... lung cancer.
+OneManShow Oh man, I laughed way too much at this!
omg haha this shouldn't be that funny lmao
lmao! that's awesome!
That Is Funny , Hahahaha 😂
hahahahaha!
3:39 he has a fake thumb on his right hand
nice
still, where did he leave his cigarette without burning himself and stuff.
if i do it this trick, I will put cigarette in my mouth since I don't know how teller got it done, though some people pointed out the fake thumb..
culturejam Never underestimate the awesome power of the thumbtip
Mark Arkel van it got put out when he stuff him thumb in the thumbtip..just like how smoker put out their cigarette, but he use the thumbtip to put it out..
This kind of misdirection/perfection in a masterclass such as this is why so many people get into magic because it’s so beautiful and effective.
I love their respect for magic and how amazing they are. They are showing you how to do magic without even ruining a trick.
1:40 he uses the "simulation" to misdirect as he gets the lemon out of his pocket
Sammy I understand what happened but it still is amazing to see how smoothly it was executes
The final shot with the smoke forming an arch over Teller is mesmerising
I love how beautiful this trick is. Just the combination of the smoke, the music and just how fluid it is makes the trick wonderful to watch. Another trick of Teller's that I'd love to see a full video of it Teller's rose trick, it just has this weird gory sense of beauty to it, but I've never found a full recording of it.
Penn and Teller have more swagger than anyone on the planet and you'll never convince me otherwise
I can watch this endlessly. It's like a beautiful dance. Damn, I love Teller's smile and Penn's style and... mesmerising. Both of them.
I watched this like a thousand times and still am in awe
I think this and the cups and balls are my favorite Penn & Teller routines. You know you're badass magicians when you can still wow the crowd while revealing everything you're doing.
Saw them a few years ago. Love Penn and Teller. Came out to mingle with their fans after the show and do autographs and pictures. The whole show was fantastically fun. I very much want to see them again the next time I hit up Vegas!
Teller looks so suave and gorgeous here! And that broad cheesy smile at the end!
sitting 30 feet away in the audience you wouldn't be able to notice the red ball or fake thumb... you wouldn't even be able to notice if you couldn't play it back. Also Teller silent act such as Tom and Jerry gives you a comical point of view of his funny personality, which throws you off your game to help better give you the illusion.
I love how even they are explaining step by step how to perform this trick, they are still making it look so magically spectacular.
The smoothness of this is beautiful.
Idk why but this is my favorite Penn and Teller trick besides Lift Off of Love. It’s just soooo mesmerizing
Penn: "This is not intended to glorify smoking"
Me, a non smoker: now i feel like smoking two packs a day
When they did this back in the days, they had a light pole Teller leans on, and he ditches the cigarette between his butt and the light pole.
It’s funnier in his ear.
"Here's how we do it"
"Alright, now do it normally"
"How do you do it?"
I love Penn's vaudeville style narration with Teller's miming, it's such a great pair
I've been looking for a high quality version of this routine for ages now! I've been watching the original grainy one for years.
I keep playing this mostly for Penn's bass and the piano.
Would love a full song based on it tbh
I have watched this routine about 1000 times and still has me how smooth and easy teller makes it
Teller doesnt speak because his black lungs wont allow it
He did say "Sure" in the jonathan ross show tho in the rabbit magic trick thing
Probably not even a real cigarette lol
He doesn't talk because he used to get heckled and not trusted. He found not talking would make people trust in what he was doing and focus more by being mesmerized by with what he does.
You pass air from your lungs through your voice box to speak, you do not form words in your lungs. The colour of his lungs is irrelevant.
The Fantastic Spastic Smoking does damage your voice, but it damaging your voice and damaging your lungs are not connected, as you said.
love how he did this again an age old trick being redone in glorious HD and still looks amazing
These guys just go above and beyond, there's a reason they're the best.
Man, Teller was MADE for that outfit!
More accurately, that outfit was made for Teller 😏
@@jamesduncan6729 Maybe both!
showcasing mastery of their craft. love P&T
At 1:14-1:16 if you slow it down you can see the ball in his right hand.
At 1:54-1:56 you can see the transfer of the lemon
What a neat presentation
_“it’s simple isn’t it?”_
Me: 👁👄👁
I'm going to be really sad when Teller dies.
morbid af lol
Jumpyluff we will all be.
Gee Thanks
volar mogulius
Then be very happy now! cuz he is alive
These guys are true artist and gentlemen. Someone tried to cut infront of us for a photo with them after the show and they weren't having it. They are good to their fans. I'll be a fan for life.
I didn't understand why the cigarette thing was a major trick before they showed us.
That's the point- it looks like he's just smoking multiple cigs but it's the same one and a pencil
That has always irked me yet I keep coming back and watching this for some reason. Its just so.... flawlessly stylish?
3:15 This jazz is so smooth. Can I buy it on Itunes?
Seeing the break down of this guys amasing talent is a real treat to watch
Gotta love how even during the explanation, you can notice the "steal" during the explanation of "simulation".
Me: Magic is when you fool people into thinking you just did the impossible.
Teller:
Me: One of us is completely missing the point, and I'm actually confused about who it is.
That’s exactly what I was thinking I rewinded and slowed it down to 0.25x, and I still couldn’t make out the moment where he palmed it.
At 1:16 I could barely see the red ball but IDK how he swapped hands
If you'r interested ut's a technique called "the french drop" and if executed perfectly by a master of sleight of hand like teller and followed by a perfect palm and misderection it's very convincing
I’m starting to learn. I just saw what happened when Teller swapped the red ball with the lemon. I feel powerful.
Teller is the greatest magician of our time. If you know how the trick is done and it still looks like magic, you're a real magician
The real magic is you paying close attention to Teller perfom a trick while you enjoy music being played by Penn live and somehow forgetting it's him playing.
But nobody be talking 'bout how Penn really just laid down a beat
Several dozen people mentioned it over the course of 5 years
Let’s stop and appreciate how awesome it is that Penn & Teller are sharing how they do this trick.
3:39 - Aha! Caught the fake Thumb on Teller’s right hand that was hiding the cigarette.
Risenking666 this is what I was in the comments for thank you
Legend
I remember watching this routine on Just for Laughs as a kid and it’s still just as good. My favourite routine by them by far.
Always loved this bit. First saw it on PBS about 25 years ago. So smooth and charming
Evidently, the real secret to being a magician is to have excellent coordination and a sharp mind.
