Maybe it's random if they are or not, if they have no organism, but some in speculative evolution from games/videos or books, drawing, etc. Don't know the rest Like how in some fandoms to questions online or not to just an idea, theory to question the digital world use to evo.

I have to disagree about calling Digimon "It". Mind you, I do understand where you're coming from, however, it's also important to remember that while it's true that Digimon have individuality and even feelings... The different forms that a Digimon takes are not so much their "individuality" as it is their "species". What I don't like about the Digimon Wiki is that it tends to talk about each species as if they're ALL the same single individuals.
Such as Zudomon "wearing Archelomon's stolen shell". Which is rather impossible as it's just a evolution stage.
Same thing with Gabumon wearing Garrurumon's pelt. He Digivolved into that form.
Clearly the "lore" behind each Digimon species is about as absurd and some Pokemon entries.
That said, if you view Digimon species as "it" the same way as Pokemon stages, then it clearly makes sense to use the pronoun in that matter. Otherwise, feel free to use whichever one fits best. As you said, Digimon's Sex/Gender Expression serves no purpose outside of aesthetics, just like the buses and phone booths.
The way I treat it is under the category of: don’t worry about it .
Basically digimons left themselves the way to do what ever they wants in gender and va and lore while justifying in context of the story

About Tortamon, reptiles do not have external genitals they have a single opening they do everything out of (reproduce, excrete, urinate) called a cloaca so whether male or female Tortamon would be the same down there.

I think the writers want the official stance to be that Digimon don’t have gender, to keep it neutral and not like they are selling sex (which sometimes they do). But they themselves don’t strictly abide to their own words.
In fact it's the opposite. The official position of Bandai and the Digimon people is that Digimon, despite not having biological sex, do have genders. All Digimon products made by Ip's main team, such as the Digimon TCG and games such as Collector, Cruseiders, Savers Another mission, Rearse, constantly confirm and reaffirm that Digimon have gender. In collectors there was a beauty contest between female digimons which Lilithimon from the 7 lord won and in rearise there was a female Mugendramon.

Apart from the couple Jijjimon and Babamon. In other words, the Tamers series itself casts doubt on what Renamon was saying. The issue is that Fandom simply doesn't pay attention to the details.

@@akiradkcn Well, to be fair most people who participate in the discussion doesn't realize that there are multiple cannons to Digimon Lore, origins and even mechanics. In Frontier, Lucemon was an ancient evil, but in CrossWars (Fusion for English Dub), Lucemon didn't reveal his fallen state yet.
So on and so forth.
However, I tend to stick with the Tamer's statements as these are Digital Monsters. As such, they're artificial. Any expressions of "sex" and "gender" are purely there for aesthetics. They don't actually have "moms & dads" or reproduction at all (outside of special powers, such as Kuwagamon's Kokuwagamon "children" or Kiwimon's attack).
However, then comes Frontier that subverts the usual by introducing Burgermon which can have male female and child forms. They clearly stick together, but it's far more feasible that (under the rules that are consistent throughout all Digimon Lore) because these Digimon grew up in similar areas, then they absorbed similar data. Digimon grow by absorbing data (in Tamers this meant specifically from Other Digimon but did also include any computer data that existed within the Digital World that came from the human worlds.) Digimon Digivolve by Experience and Data.

im not entirely sure where i learned this(maybe xros wars or cyberslueth?) But supposedly digimon have this ability described as an optional pIugin for reproduction. The way i understand it is in situations where two digimon pair up like with cutemons parents they can produce a digitama. I have 0 clue if thats via the usual fun or if they hold hands and think real hard about liIithmon but 1 or more digitama will appear for them to raise instead of that universes equivalent of primary village
As for the tamers wireframe idk how well that holds up for some universes. Ive seen armor break and clothing rip in fights with visible skin underneath in at least some of the anime.

@@rolfthebolf sounds right. Cs and cshm has so many plot heavy sidequests and lots of fans ignore the games and lots of gamers ignore sidequests so besides jp onlies, cs lore is probably the easiest to miss.
Ive been into lotr lore, dnd lore, pokemon lore, elderscrolls lore and many others but digimon is honestly the deepest and hardest to unpack lore ive ever seen. Its so spread out, out of order, occasionally poorly explained or mislocalized and some of it is hard to get at 1st hand if you can at all and despite what others say it all makes sense once you figure it out. In other words its the best lore for loreheads. Lol.
@@babypower14 yes but it was a WlFl feature in those that wasnt a part of the plot and not explained ingame. Ive played all the ds games including super xros wars dozens of times and I know for a fact thats the case. Theres a tutorial and some dialogue asking to save and connect. I do know its the same thing i was mentioning though and pretty sure its from something that came out around then. Either xroswars, a game or maybe manga and a biggee maybe of it from something as late as cshm. I just really wish i remembered what. There was a lot of jp exclusives starting around that time so its hard to find sauce on this. Playing through almost a dozen girthy jrpgs on multiple retro devices, rewatching 3 seasons of xroswars and reading several jp manga just for this isnt ideal tbh.

It can also be taken to consideration that some monsters do not have gender and only disguise themselves as someone else to fit the illusion. Since Digimon are Digital Monsters, they try to fit the in the guise of a certain entity, like an avatar or a profile image of someone in a game.

As I've said before I believe that the reason Digimon don't express gender often is literally because they don't have enough data to do so it has been established that Digimon can gain gender upon certain physical interactions with other things whether it be through biomerge or incorporating data of gender into their physical makeup (Spirit Digimon that have been used by humans also obviously have a gender)

If you saw a male dubbed gatomon acting like a young boy, nobody would question it being a boy, even if one of the things it >could< evolve into being angelwomon (it probably wouldn't, since state of mind affects digievolution)

I actually love this topic because it’s one of those things that makes the lore of Digimon so compelling. As mentioned in the video and through quotes from the creators, Digimon don’t start off with genders as we can see in fresh, in-training, and rookie levels which tend to be more animalistic or androgynous, but it is through the data they absorb or gain through evolution that their appearance mimics a certain gender based on differing factors.
I have a theory that, for the most part, though not always, digimon with human partners tend to mimic the gender roles as displayed by their partners, which I think the Renamon line conveys pretty well. Up until Taomon, Renamon and Kyyubimon are still pretty gender-neutral. It isn’t until bio-merging with Rika that it becomes the more feminine Sakuyamon, considering it is essentially taking in Rika’s subconscious into itself. Digimon absorb the data they acquire either from the internet or their surroundings, which in turn affects their evolution and personality. In Adventure, Biyomon is mainly seen as feminine due to its pink coloration, voice acting, and association to Sora. As it evolves to birdramon, it takes on a deeper voice, perhaps alluding to Sora’s tomboyish nature. Then it goes on to Garudamon which, physically could be considered male, but is still voiced by a gruffer feminine voice. It’s interesting to see digimon change their perceived gender based on their surroundings.
I like to think that because of the internet and human interaction, they perceive differing ideas as to what gender means and how it affects things like social status, authority, and power. They look at things like what is “sexy” or attractive or whatnot and incorporate it as a defense mechanism in order to possibly gain any kind of advantage in battle. In other cases, I like to think digimon just find it fun or convenient or maybe even powerful to take on forms. One of my theories is that as Digimon evolve, they often become more humanoid because they want to mimic human evolution, and so, gender is kind of just a byproduct of that evolutionary mimicry. Other times, the very basis of the data they are created from creates a particular gender such as Venusmon being very feminine because it is based on the information of the goddess.
All in all, Digimon are, at their core, genderless, but can choose to identify or even change gender freely because they are living data and can do the impossible things we humans can’t.

Honestly, I've never had an issue with it. Digimon don't have a 'sex', but they can choose to have a gender. Some digimon have a more 'visual' gender identity than others, and often you see the emoted gender identity match it, and I still feel that makes sense. They themselves prefer that type of data, so it presents more when they digivolve. As you said, digimon get stronger, and have move data, drawing on things from the human world. If anything, gender seems to matter most in attacks, since 'feminine presenting' digimon forms sometimes have 'feminine trope' attacks, same for masculine data. Especially with slide evolution being inherent, it's just another cool aspect of the digital-lifeform. Your Siri analogy is perfect. Sometimes and some people want a gendered, or gender neutral voice for a range of reasons. It's still the same core program just with some behavioral tweaks.

Basically when the digital world and real world began intermingling and overlapping, esp due to the advent of computers and the internet, there was concept-bleed. A cultural exchange of ideas, if you will. Digimon began differentiating their forms more in tune with some human realities and concepts. Simple enough.

It’s best to think Digimon as programs that take on the appearance of gendered characters in mythology or nature. They’re costumes. But sometimes you have a Digimon that has taken in enough data that they eventually develop their own gender identity, such as Piyomon in Savers considering himself to be a man.
Just to help clarify siblings Digimon, SWORN SIBLINGS are a thing and you never EVER refer to your Sworn Sibling as SWORN SIBLING and just are your sibling. Since Digimon never die the oath is forever. If we go by some forms that require prerequisites that would mean sibling Digimon requires the oath of siblinghood to achieve.
I mean, even in the real world, gender is a social construct, and can exist in defiance of physical biology, so this makes a great deal of sense.

Great video! I generally do the same. Some Digimon are suggested one way or another (such as Ladydevimon, having a feminine design and voice, and Agumon being boyish and having a young boy voice) and some are very vague or blank, almost animal-like. I think having the variety it does makes sense and is suited well to the world and story. I wouldn't personally call the anime progressive though, even for the time it originally aired. Animals, creatutes and robots being gender-neutral (especially in Japanese where the pronouns are more extensive) is nothing new, only having the non-human creatures be this way. I do appreciate it all the same. I personally always wanted to be a Digimon (or related to them) more than the human characters! So them having all variety/spectrum of design and gender was and is awesome.
My head cannon was always that digimon didn’t have a sex to be identified as like as humans do when they were born they essentially start androgynous. But from the amount of data they received from the human world or if they end up bonded with a human/tamer they would derive their gender identity based on I guess you would call it imprinting? Then again this idea would more likely refer to more animalistic or non human looking digimon. But I guess the same logic could be applied there deleting on the species

Besideds the Digimon who have physical attributes to give them a specific gender alignment I always at least for the partner Digimon atributed it to they align wth their partner. Sora, Mimi, Kari all beng girls so they had feminine Digimon... Then role on Season 2 and we got Yolei and Hawkmon so that no longer became the case...
It probably comes down to a few factors for partner Digimon like personality as they can seem to rub off each other or as 2 peas in a pod... But for wild Digimon its all just data accumilated to form said Digimon from the human world and given the vast influance that can be put into its physical creation said Digimon doesn't have to identify itself as what it appears as with the Lillithmon example or at all for some
Digimon are canonically digitally created creatures. Their 3d model as shown is the canonical anatomy. In other words:
They are technical ALL ALWAYS in their birthdays suite. No matter how much part of their model looks like clothing. If it was never detached in canon there is a good chance it's not separate. So to my understanding no matter what they look like, there is likely nothing under these "clothes".
There was also an episode where we see that Karatemon managed to get some other powerful Digimon to laugh by cross dressing. If Digimon don't have genders, how can dressing like the opposite one be funny. Unless it's just the costume that is supposed to be funny.
Imagine if Junpei Actually got The Human spirit of wind would he still become Kazemon or a Male Version of Kazemon?
Maybe a different wind Digimon? They're not the same as the Ancient Spirits, so I assume what the Frontier kids turn into is a mix of the spirit's code with their own.
Kazemon. A Shamamon was possessed by the Vritramon spirit and took on Vritramon’s exact appearance in Frontier.

Kinda like LordKnightmon/Crusadermon in the sub/dub. I grew up only thinking it was a cute girl character to learn later that it was portrayed with a masc voice in JP. Its cool to see that digimon are more gender ambiguous in nature.

The savers /data squad crusadermon had a male voice in the dub. I just figured it was a flamboyant knight character like James from team rocket or Pegasus from yugioh. I was originally expecting a voice similar to the frontier dub.

Man, Saban really screwed up with their Localization of this series. At least it wasn't as bad as Precure (Glitter Force).
I'm at least willing to believe that androgynous beast type Digimon aren't divided by gender due to the majority of them having an intentionally undefined sexual dimorphism for the most part. But as soon as you get to the humanoid spirits like the Angemon/Angewomon and Devimon/LadyDevimon lines, now alarm bells are ringing on Renamon's statement. Has she not yet seen any Angel/Fallen Angel Digimon before?
The Tamers series itself contradicts Renamon's statements, with Vajiramon falling in love with her and the couple formed by Babamon and Jijimon. I think this comment from the character is simply a result of the fact that the character doesn't interact enough with other wild Digimon besides fighting to ensure her own survival.

and if some people try to make a Brutal Battle Focused Game like Digimon Rumble Arena or Digimon World 3 they should just make Plotmon and all of her Evolutions as Unplayable NPC who gives missions or as Support Cards because they are all a lot weaker than The Royal Knights and doesn't fit The Basic Mecha Style of Digimon Series.

I guess it might be confusing to some people since we are taught into a gender binary since birth in many cultures. Some people feel more strongly about it than others and since it is a concept that evolves, it can take many forms even within the binary. From hyper this or that to less binary.
It might be complex for humans, sure, but digimon? I don't get how is it hard to imagine digital creatures (not humans) just copying what humans put on the internet which would of course include designs, themes and cultural elements WE associate with these or the other (even outside gender). It's literally info. That's why digimon designed to act like stereotypical grandpas, a particular character from a book, or a living being with the "need" to poo and pee and even eat or form relationships of all kinds exist in that world. In the stories, gender serves a narrative purpose.
And yeah, gender is not your genitals. Plus the Tortomon could have a cloaca for expelling, just not used for sexual reproduction. Since they are anatomical parts like an arm, I would not be surprised if many digimon had that info and use it in ways seen and not seen in our world. It doesn't need to be so human-centric either.
The human imagination is a wild place but the artists do not exist in a vacuum. They are informed by their environment too. We are the og data sponges.

I mean, theyre just like humans in this regard. They might look a certain way but each Digimon themselves are the one thst chooses their own gender identity.
I always think digimon don't have gender but choose there gender. Lots of people see gomamon as male in 1999 but I kinda saw them as female. Hawkmon was also portrayed as male in 02. And weirdly i for some reason see Gatomon form 1999 as male. I think the reason that lots of digimon have the same gender as their partners is because of partner comfort. The digimon think there partners would be more comfortable with the same gender. They also choose of personal preference. They want to be that gender so they say they are that gender. But digimon don't have a sex when they hatch like people are born. So most digimon are they\them. The digimon that have gender either have partners or spend a lot of time around humans.

Tldr, Digimon don't have a biological sex as they are not biological beings as they are created from stuff pulled from the internet. The presence of bulges or breasts do not serve any functional purpose and neither do their clothes (they probably look like a Barbie doll underneath it) but they are present due to the data brought over from websites on the internet. Yes, like THAT one.
In general, gender is something the individual Digimon chooses and sometimes may be informed by their appearance but not always.
As for family such as siblings and parents, it's probably just a found family as genetics is not something that can apply to beings without genes to pass on to begin with.

My big issue with Digimon’s use of pronouns, ironically is a “crime” that Pokémon enacts too. You mentioned the Digimon reference book (and ALL Pokémon games too) use the pronoun ‘It’. However, I dislike this for a different reason.
‘It’ is what we use for objects, for property. And anyone who has spent a modicum of time in either franchise knows that Digimon and Pokémon are not property within their own canons.
If I were lucky enough to have my own Digimon partner with me irl, they wouldn’t be treated as mere property (and, to go on a soapbox for a moment), just as it’s insulting that in most places, pets are treated as objects.
A Digimon is a living being. They may not have a “biological sex”, but they can have a gender identity, which means they have a sense of self. To treat a living being with a sense of self as mere property is not treating them as a friend or companion, that is analogous to slavery, and we all know that would be wrong.
The RenaMon in Survive seems to have settled into identifying as male, yet their Mega is still SakuyaMon. I'm not sure if they still identified as male then.
I prefer it. "They" is for plural only. If the being is not a he or a she, use it. It's simple, and when you use "they" to talk about a single being, you are just confusing those who are listening. English speakers have no idea how the misuse of the pronoun "they" looks delusional to Spanish and Portuguese speakers.
English is not Spanish. In English the singular they is older than the plural meaning. Plus then royals call themselves a singular "we" no one says that's grammatically wrong.
The belief Digimon reproduce in Xros Wars is common but I have never seen this stated, confirmed or implied anywhere in the show. Did I miss something? As far as I have been made to believe for the last 10 years, it is just a leap in logic made by the fandom for no real reason.
About that, the lore of Royal knight JESmon is that he is the son of Gankoomon. Gankoomon created a digitama using his own data that gave rise to Hackmon, which eventually evolved into JESmon. In other words, although the animes don't show this much, Cutemon's situation of being a digimon created by a digitama of other digimons is actually relatively common in digimon lore.

@@ChaddyFantome his was explained in the game digimon collectors and was confirmed in digimon chronicos x, where Gankoomon comments that he and JESmon have the same identity identifier because they are father and son, and this would allow creating an antibody-x overload in JESmon , which gave rise to the form of JESmon GX.

Before I say my opinion on this subject. I’d like to say that if digimon were real in todays times something tells me we’d have non binary and trans digimon as a thing. And that makes me wonder if people in the LGBTQ+ community identify with digimon since they technically have no gender. Now as far as digimon and gender is concerned. To me, as long as it doesn’t interfere with the gameplay or story and doesn’t change already established things about characters. Then I don’t care what gender a digimon wants to identify as or what gender people prefer it to be. Just so long as it doesn’t ruin the things I mentioned before.

If you want me to be honest, I like the idea of gender. Rookies and Digimon that can walk on all fours being either gender works real well. Some androgynous mon also being either or works. Calling them it is not insulting but it does make them seem more like animals instead of beings (i.e. Pokemon). But calling them THEY is highly, highly insulting. I am triggered in a negative way whenever they is used to the point I am cussing at random strangers. That is how much I hate the They Pronoun. And I find it highly transphobic. It means someone who is afraid to commit to transitioning. But still it bothers me to no end every time they is used.
Some people are nonbinary. What's with this "afraid to transition" nonsense? If they feel comfortable with themselves as they are, why do they need to transition? This is not some holy ritual or a competition, it's a way to feel comfortable in your own body, so if someone already feels comfortable there is no reason to put social pressure on them to change anything.

If I identify as a twelve foot Japanese giant, does that mean everyone else around me are now giants? How you feel and how you identify as does not change who you are. If you're not gonna commit, then identity doesn't matter.
