I have a 2002 Olds Bravada, which is the same engine as yours. I just did my thermostat yesterday and I can't believe how easy you got to the bottom bolt of the alternator. There's a a/c hose that is in the way and I couldn't get a ratchet in there. I had to use the box end of a wrench and turn it a 1/4 of the time. Of course, I didn't take the radiator fan/shroud out but I did had a small wrestling match by getting the alternator out and putting it back in. To get the thermostat bolts out, I use a long extension and go thru the wheel well which I see it a lot easier. I didn't drain all the coolant out. Most of the coolant came out when I took the thermostat and lost about 1 1/4 gallons. Anyway, I like your video and I hope you my way of work. Thanks.
Nice!!
South Dakota my friend.
The details you give is what makes your videos the best
I'm from OKC Oklahoma and I also been dealing with a bad thermostat for a few years I've had the new part for awhile, watched someone else video and he did it a more difficult way after watching this video I'm going to change mine tomorrow..thank you
Nice!
Watching from northern Indiana. I have a 2003 Trailblazer with 265000 miles on it. I really enjoy your videos and like how you show each and every step of the process.
Watching from Indiana. I always enjoy all your vids, especially when you work on the trailblazer. I changed the thermostat on my TB by removing the left tire. You can go right in through the wheel well and take the two bolts out of the thermostat without removing anything else. You just have to have a long extension. Easy peazy!
Nice!!
I will try that I was looking at mine and was thinking I may beable to do that thanks for the tip
Life saver I’m going to do try this today
Life saver I’m going to do try this today
Did this work?
Las vegas nevada my friend! thank you for your videos! help me a lot!
I like how I just learned thermostats and cooling in auto tech as you posted this
Thank you for the video, I am replacing the thermostat, belt and water pump on my trailblazer. This video helps a ton also watching from Wisconsin.
Nice fix. I'm watching from Boston. I did this way on my 03 and I went through the wheel well on my 06 . I used every extension I had . Haha
Watching from Nevada! Pretty sure this is what my 2003 Trailblazer needs. Thanks!
I just did this for my employees trailblazer. We were doing a water pump as well. That made much more room available without the fan shroud
Nice!!
Nice,I'm about to do my 05 I'm in el paso tx and is right now 106, I'll wait till tomorrow morning but now I feel more confident thanks for the help
Great video. Now I know what's going on! Same issue with 2008 Envoy and my mechanic blamed it on the cluster. He's out about $400! Thanks!
Cool!
Great video man! You did yourself a huge favor removing the fan it sucks if you don't.
Right!!
I am doing this Job on Monday thanks for the Video
Nice!
I may be doing it soon as well, great video, most descriptive so far but I may need to check the esi too lol
Watching from Ohio! Getting ready to do this tomorrow on my envoy! Excellent video! I’m not a mechanic so this will be the hardest fix I will be attempting to make! Thanks again
Nice!!
That's why I'm switching to a E-Fan! It frees up so much more room between the radiator & motor. Gain a couple of ponys too👍🏿
Nice!
Thank you the video is helpful
Well done!
Watching from So Cal, and thank you for the video sir.
wow - no heat? crazy. I'm glad I have heat at least even though I don't have AC. I live far north so Heat is a total MUST.
I get to do this today on my '04 TB 4.2, plan to start in about an hour or so when it warms up a bit. While I'm in there I'm going to replace the coolant temperature sensor since it's right next to the thermostat, up until the '06 model, then GM moved it. I'll have a look at the alternator then too. If it's still the original unit I'll replace it. Don't want to have to get back in there again! Heading for the upper 40's today so it won't be too bad. Did the wife's '06 TB last summer so I know what I'm in for!
One tip I would have: use a battery booster pack or another car battery and an OBDII memory saver, I got the Schumaker one from AutoZone. Plug that in to the OBDII port and then disconnect the battery terminals. Important notice: Those battery terminals are LIVE! So make sure you insulate them so they don't short out on something. I wrap them in a paper towel, put a plastic sandwich bag over them and zip tie the bag closed. Obviously you don't want to put them in the same baggie! The reason for this is the HVAC actuators under the dash. When the battery is disconnected without a memory saver, upon re-connection the HVAC actuators will attempt to re-calibrate themselves. They'll go from stop to stop. This is hard on the plastic gears, and with the age that most of them are they'll crack. Then you have another repair job to do! D'OH! The memory saver will keep the re-calibration from happening.
Nice!! happy Heat!!
Well done my man.
;D
Watching from Edmonton Alberta Canada great video thank you

I put boron nitride in the crankcase - so hopefully that will prevent knock. I got 250K so far. Wagner ceramic or Air-tec is the US brand name for that.
Watching from Greensboro NC, thanks for your help 😀

I have a few more projects this year, I passed inspection this year after a p0104 secondary air injection fault. Oh my goodness, I'm so glad I did it myself, with help.

Nice! Don't drink the water...lol
Years ago, I read about someone that put a thermostat on the other side of the engine. Haha. He ended up with 2 thermostats on his truck! Haha.
For the alternator, I used a ratcheting combination wrench.
watching from Iowa
Nice! Watch out for the tornadoes up there!
Nice job Nat! I did the same thing with my shroud I missed the one hole so I guess it got twisted because I remember jumping on the gas to get up a hill and I thought I heard a rod knock ugh! Well here the fan was rubbing on the shroud thank god ! Lol
When I replaced my water pump I remember doing that thermostat figured do it now or later lol
245,000 miles and so far so good 👍🏻
Has a rear wheel bearing making a ungodly noise ! Or a carrier bearing its humming give it gas it changes pitch so maybe a gear I’m not sure ....
And the valve cover gasket needs replaced as it’s leaking oil into the spark plugs so once a year or two so I pull the plugs and let it drain and spray the plugs down lol
Need to see removal of the shround and the fan too!
Watching from Leicestershire in the UK :-)
Nice!!
I found it easier to go through the wheel well, I didn't have to take the alternator or battery off
Nice!!
Watching from vegas.
Nice!
Watching from Flint Michigan i did mine around the same time
Nice!!
Nathan, this is a huge undertaken. I am going to try it no matter what on my trailblazer using your video as reference. It is giving me a code P0128 with over 230K miles on it. I will be changing the coolant temperature sensor and thermostat the same time and parts are on their way. Thanks again to your video that makes a big difference.
Nice!!!
So, did if fix your issue of P0128?
Any chance we could get a close up, pics or video, of the way you have the spot lights mounted? I'm wanting to mount some 7" round lights, about in the same location. Just want to see how you did it. Thanks

Hey man!
towson md. great video by the way! I thought it would be a 10min job.....so sad 😥 geez gm
Yea its bit involved
Question, I have some overheating to 221 degrees at times during stop but the lower radiator hose seems cold. Could that thermostat be the culprit?
Here in Cincinnati Oh.
Nice! I left my gas cap at CASEY'S two days ago, passing through lol
I just finished installing a new thermostat. I put it all back together, refilled the fluid, and checked for leaks. Didnt see anything. I turned the car on, and when I got out of the car, there was a slow drip falling off the skid plate.
It drips about once every 30 seconds.

I have the 2008 Trailblazer LS, I see on all of these videos that they have an electronic fan clutch, but my fan clutch is not electronic. No wires going to the fan clutch, I ordered the water pump and fan clutch together, but when I got thing apart, found I had to order a different non electronic fan clutch. Trying to get everything apart while waiting for all the parts to arrive, water pump, fan clutch, and thermostat. Figured as long as I had everything apart, I should just put all new parts in.
Nice!!
@@FixingWithPassion Yes it takes me a lot longer than it takes in these videos everything fights back. So far I have been working on it for three days, I am a little slower than you are. LOL I am 76 years old and take a lot of breaks, When I get frustrated with something not coming apart like it is supposed to, I just go do something else, and then when I come back it works. Have to get the car ready, because it won't be long before I will be out cutting and hauling firewood this summer, and the Trailblazer pulls the logs out of the woods, and then the trailer to haul it home.
Ok water pump is in , pully tightened down, the thermostat is in, now I am fighting with the alternator, trying to get the bolts that hold it back in, The new fan clutch arrives tomorrow, would like to have the altrnator in and the belt back on by then. LOL There is always something that fights back and slows me down. Big hands and small spaces do not work well together.
Does the fan shroud serve any purpose besides protecting the radiator? Does it have to be put back on? The biggest pains were the bottom bolt on the alternator by the ac hose and the back bolt on the thermostat. Did that one handed with a wrench it took for freakin ever. Same getting it back on. Hope it doesn’t come loose
I think it mainly serves to greatly help pull air thru the radiator and also to protect from hands hitting the fan blades

I'm from Clyde NC and why do you have to go through all that when all you have to do is take there hose loose take out the Thermostat then replace it.
