      I work at a tire, brake and front end shop and I have replaced more brake systems from people putting oil power steering fluid in their master cylinder !! It never ceases to amaze me what people do to their cars!! Oil and any petroleum product will swell every rubber component in your brake system so valves cylinders calipers hoses abs controllers in other words big money !!!! Then the metal hard lines need to be flushed not with brake clean as its petroleum but denatured alcohol!!

      Casey Stoner yep oils cheaper than an engine. One of the first things I say to people when I'm talking about their car is when was the last time you had an oil change. If they can't answer the question that pretty much indicates that they don't take care of it. At that point you don't volunteer to help them maintain their car. Why would you put in the effort out if they're not going to take care of it.

      The thing is he is spreading stereotypes that are not true anymore. He is old timer and many of what he says is wrong. He promotes values for older cars and hates new technology. The thing is every car since 2010 comes with new technology and instead of bitching about it - he could have adjusted and told us some normal things, but no, he is stuck in 80's and 90's and thinks that only Dodge 1998 is a best car lol. From his point of view any Japanese car that is in reality very reliable - he thinks it's junk - only because he can't fix some thigns that are no longer fixed and just replaced as a unit. This is new reality we live already for a decade, but the guy is stuck in his old days. Pathetic

    • @LionWithTheLamb
      @LionWithTheLamb 6 років тому +7

      +Ara Arutyan - Toyota's are good vehicles (usually) in my experience as well, Most of his gripes are about stupid things that car manufactures are doing nowadays. Things that wear out quickly and cost a lot to replace. A good example is stereos that are touch screen and custom fit, or how about heater controls that are controlled by touch screens. Plastic parts on engines and engine systems that get brittle and break. Cars without dipsticks, grease fittings, and lubed for life parts. Older cars were built better. The newer ones are safer and get better mileage but planned obsolescence is in full effect. I don't care for ANY vehicle built after 2005 and they are getting harder to find in good condition. Also, I am sure that Scotty does not think that a 1998 Dodge is the best car.

      Common sense and driving don't always go together. Yesterday I saw a video where a biker stopped some stupid old bitch to tell her she had TWO flat tyres. Her excuse was she had no insurance, at the time she was trying to drive 20mins away from that location. She was not happy about him telling her either. But what really amazed me were the comments calling the biker a douche, and worse just because he told her. Those idiots didn't seem to comprehend he probably saved her life, and the lives of those she would have killed when her car went skidding on the first corner she went round.

    This is my first time watching your videos and this first bit of advice is a little troubling to me, about steam cleaning under the hood. I have a Karcher Kerosene fired steam cleaner that I bought about 20 years ago. I've been steam cleaning under hoods longer ago than when I bought it. I've had a couple problems with components getting wet and causing a problem but I've never blown out an electronic component. After drying out the culprit, everything was working the way it should. I've been a technician/mechanic over 40 years and I have experienced a myriad of electronic glitches but not because of steam cleaning. I have to say, everything you mentioned in the rest of the video I agree with 100%. I'm subscribing, liking, and I'm gonna tap on the little bell, I would like to watch more of your videos, they are very informative for many who are just getting started with owning/maintaining a vehicle. Thank's for sharing, Scotty. Best wishes.

    I work for a detailing company at a local chevy dealership. We're supposed to power wash under the hood of the new cars. Never had a problem till I tried it on my own car which is a 94 Buick Lesabre. It ran horribly and was misfiring very badly for days. After that I never power washed under the hood of any car ever again. Like you said there's really no point.

    • @markgodfrey790
      @markgodfrey790 6 років тому +2

      John A - that's because you got the ignition system wet. Wd-40 would have helped. Pop the distributor cap loose and you would have seen moisture due to condensation inside the distributor cap. All you had to do was dry it out as best as you can with paper towels. Dry off the rotor and all inside the distributor as well. Then make sure it doesn't have any small pieces of paper towel inside blow it out good then just spray a short blast or 2 of wd 40 inside and snap it back onto the distributor. All should be good after that.

    • @Believe231
      @Believe231 6 років тому +1

      FYI, that drying technique can be applicable to many cars that have distributor style secondary ignition systems, but not with his '94 LeSabre as it has a distributorless secondary ignition system (DIS) using crank and cam sensors to trigger it. So what he could've done was dry off (and spray WD-40 on) the coils and ICM assembly, as well as the spark plugs and spark plug wires and see if it would've helped or not.

    Scotty,
    Cleaning an engine bay is not difficult or dangerous and makes other maintenance easier. It also makes the source of fluid leaks easier to find.
    Also, you don't have to use much water (or any at all) if you're worried about ruining electronic parts. That said, electrical connectors on modern cars are pretty impervious to water and ECMs and other electrical components are usually pretty well protected. Engine bays get soaking wet when you drive in the rain, so some low pressure spray or steam is very unlikely to cause any problems.

    • @hhhhhhhhhhhhh4927
      @hhhhhhhhhhhhh4927 6 років тому +20

      I washed my engine bay last summer with a garden hose and was careful to avoid electronics. I ended up getting a bit of water on some conduit that protected a wire harness. The water sat inside the conduit and corroded one of the wires a few months later. It took many hours to diagnose and fix the problem.

      Y tf would you do that? Also, don’t double ring the oil filter. The rubber gasket that’s attached to the filter sometimes latches on to the engine instead of the original filter due to the torque put on it. It stays on the engine and if you take it off and put a new one on with the old one still there, boom. Niagra falls. Only it’s not water, it’s dinosaur oil.

    I have a 2009 GMC truck with a 5.3 in it. I purchased a coachmen camper that weighs 10,000 lbs. I thought since my bf is a truck driver he would do better than me, so I let him drive. He put the truck in cruise. While going up hill the engine his the 6 while searching for a gear. I yelled at him to stop it and to hit the brake. He laughed at me. He did then hit the brake, but again put it in cruise control, while telling me my truck was meant to handle it. Again, the truck redlined and next thing you know the alarm is sounding and it lost oil pressure. He pulled over and the engine was really hot. When it cooled down it did start again, but sounded terrible. There was oil in the engine and it did regain pressure. When I took it to my mechanic he said that my boyfriend pretty much ruined my engine and I had to get another. I am at a loss. My boyfriend says he wasn't the one that ruined my engine. He claims that it was only at 4 and just looked like that. My grown son was in the back seat and he says he saw him redline it too. My boyfriend did offer to pay half for the engine, but he refuses to accept any responsibility for the demise of my engine. He also says, since it was still running that it wasn't officially blown and that I could have gone a long time that way. My mechanic says no. He says I would have ended up stuck on the side of the road at any time. Help. Can you please give me the answers? I did put a different engine in. I would NEVER think of using cruise control while pulling a trailer. I am almost thinking that my boyfriend did this on purpose, although I'm not sure why.

    Hey Scotty, my dad replaced a piece of brake line on his 1996 honda accord. No ABS. When the line failed, he used power steering fluid in the braking system. No damage at all. Now here's my problem, when my dad replaced the brake line, he cut some corners and didn't flange the lines. Now the brake pedal goes all the way to the floor and the car isn't even stopping hard. There must be a leak in the lines because the brakes are very soft. How do I fix the soft brakes without bleeding them constantly? P.S. This will be the car I will drive till I can buy my own. And one more question, when you replace the brake rotor and brake pads at the same time as with my minivan, do I have to bleed the brakes after replacing the rotors and pads, as it says in the instructions?

    • @scottykilmer
      @scottykilmer  9 років тому +1

      you don't have to bleed the brakes to change rotors and pads, BUT odds are there is air in the system now making the pedal go down and not stop fast. Realize you should start there. if it was leaking at a line, you would see fluid gushing out there when you slammed the brakes on.

    • @funnypranker34
      @funnypranker34 9 років тому

      There is no fluid coming out. My dad fixed the line, but didn't flange the line. And once that line got fixed, another piece of line failed. He did flange the second leak. The master cylinder has been replaced, bleeded, and the lines bleeded. Now after like 5 months, the pedal goes ALL the way to the floor and not even stopping. I will be driving this car when I get my permit. Would the permanent solution to the brake issue is spend 200 bucks on brake line and fittings and replace all the line or since the car has 228000 miles and needs a tune up, catalytic converter, oxygen sensors, brake rotors and pads, one new caliper since the bleed screw on that one is rusted in the caliper and some small things. Should I get rid of it or I should just put a carburetor on it, weld on a 50 dollar universal cat on and it should be fine right? The car successfully traveled 650 miles with 10 year old spark plugs and wires, no injector cleaner, original fuel filter never replaced, and doesn't burn any oil, it just leaks a bit.

    • @castirondude
      @castirondude 9 років тому +2

      Peter Kapica you need to get a double flare on your brake lines or they can fail at any moment. Using a double flaring tool is tricky. The best bet is to buy brake lines of the right length with the flares already on them, then bend them yourself.
      I don't know what you mean with "fix the line". Brake lines cannot be fixed, they need to be replaced.
      A 1996 car shouldn't have brake lines going bad, why did it fail?
      Why or how would you put a carb on a '96 accord?
      I don't think you know anything about cars. You should just take it to a reputable shop for diagnosis & repair.

    • @funnypranker34
      @funnypranker34 9 років тому +1

      Yes I do know about cars. First of all, he did replace the piece of brake line and only flared one of the line. The first leak he used a hacksaw blade. Then the second time he did it right. I don't know why it failed suddenly but I think it's just old brake fluid with some water absorbed and the lines rusted. I told him not to put old fluid in, but didn't listen to me. And I don't think you know that people actually converted fuel injected v8s to a carved v8. It might make more power than a fuel injected one because that's how it was originally tuned. And all you need to do to convert fuel injection to carb is take the fuel rail off, install low pressure fuel pump, remove air box, put air cleaner on carb, then put carb on intake manifold. Works best with cars with a distributer ignition systems. Type into UA-cam Redneck efi to carb conversion and you'll see it's possible.

    • @greatray6262

      +LazyEyeCrazyI Washer fluid in a radiator works great as a emergency temporary coolant in the winter time. Washer fluid is a better alternative than water because it won't freeze, it's cheaper than antifreeze, and you can use it as a temporary fix till you can make repairs. I haven't use it in awhile because I haven't any radiator problems lately, but the 4 to 5 times I have used it I have never had a problem. The main issue with using washer fluid is it doesn't have a rust inhibitor in it. Performance wise it's no different than filling your radiator up with water in the summer.

      Stepdad paid a dude that supposedly does mobile car cleaning to do all 3 of our cars (mine, stepdad, mum). The idiot that came out sure enough had a jet washer and cleaned out the insides of the wheel arches, the hub and everything. Stepdads vauxhall insignia survived. Mums mitsibushi shogun (big family, needed the extra row of seats yet people carriers we looked at didnt have space for cargo etc once you put 7 people in, shogun did) almost survived if not for the idiot managing to scratch the side of the car somehow. My vauxhall corsa was almost pronounced dead on the scene, I went to drive it after he left and found dashboard lights randomly coming on or off, one of the indicators going of its own accord and it not wanting to start, open the bonnet and sure enough every single surface in that engine bay is soaked. Car once pushed into sunlight and left with the bonnet open eventually dried out but the right indicator didnt work still and needed a garage repair. Scratch repair + damage to car electronics came to £650 I think in the end from a moron and a jet washer.

      Yes, there is a big difference between a steam washer and a pressure washer.
      You can use a pressure washer on certain parts of the engine, BUT avoid all the electrical wires, fuse boxes, throttle body, air filter box, and drive belt pulleys (belts might squeal after that). Basically, avoid the top of the motor. I had tranny oil flicked all over a bottom area of the engine and tranny from a failed transmission output shaft seal, and a pressure washer helped, at least what I could reach with it. I'll still have to crawl under the car when it isn't winter to clean up the rest with some degreaser.

    Great advice on the overheating! I have climbed mountain passes in stages with the heater on, pull over, let it cool down, go some more, and once over the top, hit the first parts store I can find. We had a bunch of non-trained mechanics back home, and they would just dump standard 80/90 in the LS rear end, and we were buying clutches all the time. I went to using GM LSD gear oil, and never had another LSD clutch pack go bad.

    So in your standard logic your toyota isn't any good as it has a computer, right?

    • @scottykilmer
      @scottykilmer  8 років тому +5

      +egi75 all cars are full of computers, even my old 81 corolla had computer components.

      Scotty Kilmer Oh boy, that was totally wrong. I dare you to find a computer in a Chevrolet made before 1985. Find a computer in a 1992 or older VW diesel, or any air cooled VW. There are lots of other cars too.

      BoostAddict lots of pre 85 chevy vehicles have electronic ignition. Thats a computer technically.

    • @faithismine128
      @faithismine128 6 років тому

      +BoostAddict Chevrolet Camaro and Corvette from 1982-1984 with Cross Fire Injection have a computer and all the fuel injection sensors to go with it. TPS, Oxygen, etc. So do Trans Ams.

      +Wayne S. All GM cars after 1976 have electronic ignition that is technically a computer chip. Takes the place of points.

    The part about buying your own little air compressor instead of going to the gas station -brilliant! I never knew how affordable and easy those air compressors were. Thanks Scotty!

    Great advice on all points! Most cars today are ready to give you their best performance, mileage and safety when they roll off the showroom floor. Changing one of those three things upsets the balance of all the others. Enjoy what you bought, our new 2017 Explorer with Ecoboost rocks and gets good gas mileage, plus is super. Ask it to climb a hill or pass a car it puts you back in the seat. Just treat your cars like the man says and you will be a happy camper.

    Watched some of your videos and found them to be quite good and direct. Unlike some people who do videos and cant take constructive feedback. Agree, best mech is by referral, which is why I keep getting more work I can handle......even though I am not a mechanic.....lol.....Keep up the good work.
