An excellent and greatly appreciated enhancement; You made the STe version of Giana Sisters as it was supposed to be played (for those who don't know, the original ST conversion flipped the whole screen when you were about 3/4 of the way across; imagine trying to play the game like that. Just imagine. Go on! Imagine it!.. or play the original, whatever). Kudos to you sir!
Wow! Feels much more like Amiga games now. Especially Magic Boy, something with the graphics and sound that really give an Amiga-like feeling to the presentation.
Great video! A lot of masterpieces inside. Some of this game are my ST favourites ever. Wings of Death, Gods, The Chaos Engine, Another World, Obsession, Stardust… a complete classic colection.
I'm not sure what STE enhanced features Starball was showing? It can replay four channel .mod files of your choice on a Falcon, or you can use STE DMA sound effects in place of the YM chip noises featured in the video. I've got Starball playing on my STE with the samples.
Sleepwalker is the only STe specific title from a major company - the others are all either bonus enhancements in the same version, or made by specialist companies, or homebrew updates not by the original coders. The STe's potential may be greater than these suggest? Substation, Team and Zero 5 might be worth adding too? I'd say it closed 60-80% of the gap between Amiga and ST. Still only 16 colours per scanline, but you could partially get around that with skill and compromises.
Sorry but i was an amiga500 user in my youth and was hardly aware of the atari machine...these games look absolutely superb and is difficult to differentiate between these and an amiga...
Unfortunately, the STE came out too late and changed too little. Also, many game developers had already lost their trust in Atari at this time. But specially the music capabilities are indeed awesome and almost unknown by most people. ua-cam.com/video/bat3BKozswo/v-deo.htmlsi=Sv5ZKcNGI25HVcu8
To be honest, I have not noticed any significant change. But Atarimania says: Improved version with faster framerate, STe colour palette and some improved sprites converted from the coin-op version.
Chaos Engine and Sleepwalker could both almost pass as the A500 versions (although not quite). Obsession is also a decent match for Pinball Fantasies. I have both an A500 and an Atari STE which I picked up for pennies at a car boot sale in Leeds in 2002 when people were practically throwing them out as junk (!). I could quite happily play the STE versions of Chaos and Sleepwalker, but there's something gone badly awry with the colours in Prince of Persia. Why so blue? With strange fuzzy yellow outlines to the characters? I did start to play Prince of Persia on my STE just because the controls are so much more fluid than the frustratingly stodgy controls on the Amiga version, but in the end I couldn't handle the headache inducing colours.
LOL Obession pinball, if you hold left shift long enough they tell what pizzeria they ate at, "adria" i used to eat there too :) (I think i was left don't bug me it was a long time ago).
Nice showcase. I know you can't include everything but it would have been nice to have seen Ultimate Arena (a mortal combat type game) and Zero-5. I'd also throw in "Roger", which you can see on Atarimania. A competent STE-only platformer
I have added chapters in this video. You can see the game names in the timeline or in the video description (click on "more" in the right side of the description section).
I had the same question in mind when seeing the STE version first time. But then I tried the original ST version and it is so unbelievable terrible. Will make a comparing video maybe soon then you will see in detail.
Chaos Engine: STe enhanced. What they mean is the palette looks shit on plain ST. It doesn't use any other STe feature. Zool and Lethal Xcess are proper STe titles. Outrun still looks rubbish (the white hair girl.. blocky water, come on), with ditto music. Another World was not STe enhanced afaik. Stone Age was a gem. The music and credits screens alone make it worth running. The Super Galaga clone seems great!
@@LuciRosseTV All this games are using STE Features but most of them you can also play on regular ST´s. There is one exception, Enchanted Land was a mistake, it is not using any STE features.

There are a lot Atari ST Games using more than 16 colors. The trick is to change the colorpalette multiple times in each frame. This way you can reach up to 48colors and maybe even more.
Atari STE was nearly as good as Amiga with OCS/ECS. However it was released to late and very few people had it, so publishers still wanted to support base ST which crippled not only STE but also Amiga and PC DOS ports, since everything on ST is done in software so it can be easily port to Amiga or PC, but without using hardware features of Amiga or PC VGA. On the other hand Atari Falcon was the most powerful early 90's platform. It was few years ahead of the competition, just like Amiga in the 80's. Just look at Half-Life or Quake 2 for Falcon on youtube.
it's a shame what they really used of STE features. ost of these games do not look any better or sound better... chambers seem to be wrong on SFX in this video.

You are welcome. It was fun to play them!

3:31 What's funny about this game is not the fight in the foreground, but the silhouette fight in the window in the background house!
I had absolutely no idea there was a dedicated ste version of outrun. It is now my mission to hunt down a copy.
Did u get it?
I remember having a 1040 STE, never got full use out of it as there was few games for it
Yes that is really a tragedy because the STE was indeed significant better. Specially if it comes to music.

Great video.

The best console ever... Atari st 1040 . Best game and best music... 🤘
Chaos engine was such a let down after playing the amiga version through with a friend . Hate to say it but the bitmaps let the ste down .
Also worth mentioning is "Vaxine", which is way more colorful on STE than on normal ST.

Oh yes. Love it!!!!!
I thought Zool was an Amiga exclusive title. Nice.

It's still garbage. I'm sorry, but the ST/Amiga ports of Outrun were horrible.
It's indeed raster, a bit 'smoother' still crap, space harrier would 'vé been cool if enhanced... Those Amiga ports s#€&% even more

According to atarimania.com it supports Stereo DMA Sound and enhanced color palette.
