I believe, OP's friend took it too far here, but most of the blame falls upon the DM who dropped the ball first, by forcing their player into making a decision IC they might soon regret OOC. OP handled the situation the best he could for the sake of his dwarf companion, and in return, his real life friend just simply turns on him for "stealing his spotlight". That's just wrong, because the DnD is supposed to be all about teamwork and friendship between characters and this situation was not such case.

The OP did what he thought was right, the DM should not have allowed it or he had an issue with it and the OP’s friend doesn’t seem the greatest of Friends at all does he!

There a lot of infornation that is missing but that we have the main problem is the DM as they was the source of the problem and the couple too as they mad for something that small and never acepted op apology
You are right, unfortunately there is always information missing as we only usually get one half of the story. I definitely feel much of the blame should fall on the DM and sad to see a friendship go after 3 years
