The lad stood at Clegg St. Station (4:48) is my dad, he was 84 yesterday. Recognised him straight away!
My grandparents on my mums side lived on Belgrave Road and their garden at the back went down almost to the line on the other side of the Honeywell Lane bridge
My 1st Pub that I ran was just up the Road "The Alexandria" in it it had pictures of some of the railwayman from The old stations and yard
I'd love to see some of those.
The passenger services finished about 1959/1960. I remember seeing two coach 'push-pull' steam trains from the upper classroom at Fitton Hill school. A four coach workers' train could be seen at around 5.00 pm every weekday. The line was also used for freight and coal (empties) trains of the 2-8-0 Austerity and 2-10-0 types, The line closed for all traffic around 1967/8.
Thanks for the info David.
what a great surprise , thanks mate , from nick in wigan , lancahire
No problems. Hope you enjoy the series.
@@laticsfan oh i will mate lol
The two-coach train seen @7.00 I would say, is that it is departing over a crossover to gain correct direction. The clue is the stop signal protecting that platform is set at STOP and the tail lamp appears dark for a white light!
Thanks for the technical info John.
The Honeywell lane bridge was still there 1990s,a lot of land was disturbed by the council, doing footpaths, the trackbed is actually nearer to the back of the houses on belgrave Rd ,they all backed into the railway
Thanks for the comments.
Most of the route between Oldham Clegg Street and Park Bridge has been lost as after the line finally closed around 1970 Oldham Council used the alignment as a land fill site and the track bed is now buried several metres below the footpath/bridle path. No real traces of railway artefacts remain on this section. As you approach the Oldham End of the site of Park Bridge viaduct the path drops down quite significantly to track level. I look forward to the next segments of your exploration. By the way Clegg Street was as you say OA&GB but although Central was next door it was a totally separate station built by the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway. Keep you eyes open after Park Bridge as there are quite a few artefacts lying around.
Great comments. Yes, I agree that it's quite difficult to follow the line after Honeywell Lane Bridge. The only real option is to walk parallel to the trackbed and follow the meandering path. There are many artefacts as you say around the Park Bridge area and they will appear later in the series.
I travelled on the last day of service, 2nd June 1959. 67417 in charge as usual.
Lucky you! I never rode the line.
It was almost criminal to allow that warehouse off Park Road to be demolish .
Absolutely. I think it was all political and that's why it went. I could have been a great asset to Oldham. History shouldn't be destroyed.
