Bob Symes Robert Alexander Schutzmann was an amazing person. He built the very first radio-controlled model diesel locomotive. That will never be beaten.
Oh my days, I remember watching this on video as a child which I borrowed from the local library several times a month, never got bored of it. A proper nostalgia trip!
Those model layouts were awesome, particularly Wheal Mellin, I do hope some have survived and are perhaps on public display somewhere. Also worth noting that back in the day they would have been ‘scratch built’ and not have used the CAD/CAM kits available these days. Thank you for sharing.
There was rumours of individually run locos being developed to be run by a computer system, from Germany, and if I remember correctly, there was some radio control locos that run on 12v DC track.
Used to have his how to build a layout on video. Unfortunately wasnt long before the vcr broke and by that time everything had gone to dvd and couldnt get another vcr

Back when there was quality programmes on TV!! Thanks for giving this the airtime it deserves.
Whilst the first one was shown on Channel 4 Boxing Day 1984 i dont think this one was given airtime and just went straight to video.
Bob Symes... Still sadly missed, but never forgotten. A true legend, in his own lifetime.
He was a titan in the railway modelling world. he had an impressive life, he even held a command within the royal navy.
I find these videos immensley relaxing, beautiful models, fantastic narration by Bob. Absolutely wonderful and thank you for uploading this.

I'm in my late 30s and some of my earliest memories are of Bob Symes programmes. To me he's the David Attenborough of modelling television.
