    🤗Enjoyed the show! Citizen Kane was a major film influence for many GA artists as were the film style techniques used by comic strip artists like Noel Sickles (Scorchy Smith) , Roy Crane (Wash Tubbs later retitled Captain Easy) and Milt Caniff (Terry and the Pirates) ; Caniff was mentored by Sickles. The use of newspapers , radios and tv screens along with window and door focusing in panels was used in comic strip stories which possibly helped influence Wood's approach. Really enjoyed his combination humorous and serious character drawings in his stories!

      In addition to those guys, the artists at DC were all influenced by it. Jerry Robinson mentioned in a few interviews that the DC guys would all get together and go out and watch it looking for new ways to tell stories.

    What I find most interesting about the comics/cinema crossover is that much of the blocking in cinema was invented to hide the environment, because full, large sets were incredibly expensive. Likewise, backgrounds can be time consuming to draw, so the comic book blocking did the same as cinema blocking, making the frame feel full and dynamic, without wasting too much time or money.

    This has been a fascinating look into the process of one of the most revered artists in comic book history. Wally Wood's techniques are well worthy of learning, and this video series is almost required viewing for any potential creator of sequential art(to borrow a term from Will Eisner and Scott McCloud). Please hurry back FizzFop, your audience misses you very much!

    I've always liked Wally Wood's art, creativity, and storytelling techniques. And I was aware of his "22 panels that always work". But your brilliant series devoted to this subject added a whole other layer to my appreciation of Wally Wood's genius. Obviously, a lot of work went into producing this series and it was worth it! I love your selection of images to explain each technique. That "V-Vampires!" one is one of the best exemple of Wally Wood dedication to his art. After all, this was just for a humor story, but Wood still gave all he had to that splash panel. Aside from the multi-layered background you described so astutely, to the row of successive "klek" sound effect from the woman's high heels that not only help set the mood, but also demonstate the rythm and motion of the protagonist in a deceptively simple way. Thank you for this series FizzFop1! This is now the reference I will recommend to someone who doesn't understand why Wally Wood was a genius and a Grandmaster of the artform.

    • @FizzFop1
      @FizzFop1  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks Ranger Sly! I really wanted to make this special. It really jumped out at me that the videos on the subject were missing out on the concepts that Wood used. The sole focus was on composition and a lot of them never left the reference sheet.
      The sound effects was something I sort of touched on in passing. I should have focused more on it. That was something he picked up from Eisner. The Spirit stories that Wood worked on have a heavy focus on sound effects.

    • @Rangersly
      @Rangersly 3 роки тому

      @@FizzFop1 Yes! Now that you mention it, the sound effect was indeed an Eisner influence for sure.

    Three stage is a little more complicated. I recently saw it being discussed in relation to Ray Harryhausen, who, according to an article on a Tate Gallery show of his key drawings, was very influenced by a 19th Century English painter named John Martin. I just Googled Martin today, and his apocalyptic visions are worth it. In the few fleeting hours I spent I kept finding more and more.
    Apparently a lot of Hollywood types of Harryhausen's generation and before were influenced by him. Such as Mr. DeMille and Orson Welles (though I cannot give you references for either). Tn art school one technique I learned was to concentrate on the midground while simplifying foreground and background (that is only one technique).
    It seems to be what is being discussed, but the only reason he'd use silhouettes is this is a quick sketch. I do recommend looking up Martin (sort of a High Church answer to that unregenerate Swedenborgian William Blake) and, of course Harryhausen's drawings which at first seem pedantic but are actually quite sophisticated.

      Also after watching this video I realized that I have already been using some of these techniques without even knowing it, in particularly the windowed panel and the through media panel, as a few of the strips I did focused on one of the characters whose job is looking at security cameras and often slacks off by watching TV

    • @FizzFop1
      @FizzFop1  3 роки тому +1

      Security cameras is a great way to show the reader what's going on. You see that in movies all the time. Scarface with Al Pacino comes to mind...the bad guys attack his home at the end of the movie. You see them storming the house through security cameras.
      So many of these techniques are just engraved into our heads at this point. They are everywhere in film, TV, advertising...and so on.

      @FizzFop1  3 роки тому +1

      Hi toddevangelista, thanks for watching. While I was doing my research, I came across one of the two panels. It was not a full drawing...a partial layout, and I couldn't make anything out of it. It had part of two heads in the panel. It's drawn very faint-no hard lines and I'm not sure if the photocopy shows all the details. I couldn't figure out what he was trying to convey.
