Actually there were women action stars in the silent era. The first appears to have been Mary Fuller who appeared in 3 serials from 1912-1917, the first being What Happened to Mary. Others include Helen Holmes, Helen Gibson, Ruth Roland, Kathleen Williams, Grace Cunard and Pearl White. White was was the most famous, especially for the serial the Perils of Pauline 1914.

Love the video, but I hate to be "That Guy," NYOKA is beaten by Helen Holmes - 27 years earlier. Holmes was the first female movie action hero, and she also performed all of her own stunts, starting with the 1914 Serial, THE HAZARDS OF HELEN.

I got the impression that Jungle Girl was shot in sequential order from the way the protagonist's treatment changes as the serial goes along. In the first few chapters, they seemed reluctant to let her fight with any sort of legitimacy. There's a scene where a bad guy grabs her by the wrists, she puts up a mild struggle, and then he falls into a pit through no real action on her end. By the fourth chapter, she was throwing punches and kicking men off of horses. I think they realized during production that they were going to have to treat her like a legitimate action star if the story was going to work.

The 1942 Republic serial had Kay Aldridge in the titular role. Bill Black (AC Comics fame) has reprinted a lot of the Nyoka comic book stories and has even kept the movie serials alive through DVD sales of the public domain movies. Thanks for pointing out that female-led action movies have existed for over 80 years.

AC Comics was how I discovered a lot of otherwise forgotten Golden Age PD superheros, Nyoka included. Also loved their take on Yankee Girl who endearingly airhead Power Girl vibe to her XD.

I am totally going to watch this.
I invoked Barbara Stanwyck when the “first female action hero” argument came up, but this is even better than the westerns I found with Stanwyck. She did face off with Ronald Reagan in one, though.

Jungle girl serials actually go back to the silent era -- The Leopard Woman (1920), The Jungle Goddess (1922), Lorraine of the Lions (1925), Jungle Woman (1926), and the talkie film Savage Girl (1932), and Queen of the Jungle (serial 1935).

Mary Fuller started the path for the many women who came after, and became very popular in 1912 with her adventure series What Happened to Mary. There was also Helen Holmes, who was the lead character in the railroad adventure series, The Hazards of Helen, where she was later replaced by Helen Gibson. Ruth Roland was the protagonist in The Girl Detective. Pearl White became the most well-known star on screen in the massively successful The Perils of Pauline in 1917.

If you enjoyed Jungle Girl as an early "female action star" serial, then I highly recommend Zorro's Black Whip - in which Zorro doesn't feature at all, despite the title. Instead it focuses on The Black Whip, a woman who takes over the vigilante mantle from her brother. She outfights, outshoots and outrides all the men, and it's a fun action adventure serial to boot.

Just the other day I watched a compilation show (on Tubi, I believe) featuring super-heroes, serials, early TV, etc. and it showed a serial which I think featured Nyoka, and the male star of the piece was Clayton Moore! Wild to see him without his Lone Ranger mask!

Firstly I watched this serial and I enjoyed it! Not many female led action films I enjoy "these days"! Secondly, I'm a POC and I never had problems with early portrayal of White characters in POC roles. Coz it's a White-centric country and then, it wasn't muti-cultural the way it is now. And it is why it's called "THEATRICAL" !! Coz people play-act many sophisticated roles, that is the whole concept of acting, you pulling off a role which is completely different than your kin. There's a saying. ....Flow with the times! So why complain about a bygone era! Keep up the great work brother! Love your vids!☝🙏

I remember learning about Nyoka while reading a collection of Marvel comics that mentioned her. It was in Italian, and in fact it also warned about the name, because it sounds almost exactly like an Italian word (gnocca) that can mean "twat, cunt, pussy" or a derogatory word to call a woman "hot chick".

I would probably have Judy Garland as Dorothy Gale in the 1939 film, The Wizard Of Oz as the one. It is an action/adventure fantasy musical film where Dorothy at the end defeated the Wicked Witch of the West. At first, yes she was like a damsal in distress, but got stronger and braver towards the end of the film. It is one of the good storylines of a character that was weak at the beginning and became brave and strong at the end to defeat the enemy.

Sorry, but this video operates under the idea that no movies before 1941 ever existed. And is entirely wrong in its contention that somehow JUNGLE GIRL is supposed to have been the first female action hero which entirely dismisses 25 YEARS worth of cliffhangers which featured women who could ride, shoot, fight and do anything else a man could do including amazing stunts they often performed THEMSELVES.
The real first action heroes of the movies were ALL FEMALE and began appearing in cliffhanger serials starting in 1914 with ADVENTURES OF KATHLYN and, most importantly, Helen Holmes in THE HAZARDS OF HELEN and Pearl White in THE EXPLOITS OF ELAINE and many other serials. Other female action heroes followed including:
Ann Little in THE EAGLE'S TALONS, THE BLACK BOX< and other serials
Marie Walcamp in THE RED GLOVE, THE LION'S CLAWS, THE RED ACE and others
Marin Sais in THE GIRL FROM FRISCO
Juanita Hansen in THE SECRET OF THE SUBMARINE and LOST CITY OF THE AFRICAN JUNGLES and more
Helen Holmes in THE GIRL AND THE GAME, LASS OF THE LUMBERLANDS and more
Ruth Stonehouse in THE MASKED RIDER
And most of these cliffhanger actresses did many more serials in which they were the main character and DID fight and do stunts and were generally proactive.
People like Ed Hulse who insist on perpetuating the stereotype that these women were "damsels in distress" or sex objects are FLAT-OUT WRONG; the stereotypes need to be dismissed. These were pioneers in action cinema, very strong people and their serials were GREAT.
Ruth Stonehouse, featured in THE MASKED RIDER, was also one of the first film DIRECTORS.
And in the end of the serial the Masked Rider is revealed to be a WOMAN. Meaning that the Masked Rider character was one of the first masked/costumed title characters in a serial who functioned like the superheroes of today. Grace Cunard as The Purple Mask also wore a costume but she was a thief, not a heroine, but still looked like a costumed superhero of today.
I strongly recommend that people not take this video at face value because it is not correct in its contention at all. Female action heroes actually dominated and preceded the male action hero in cliffhanger serials and the movies in general.
For more information about the REAL female action heroes, visit the Daughters of Daring facebook group and the Serial Squadron Facebook group, and learn the truth about the real original female action heroes of the movies.

Yeaahhh...I sometimes wonder when the public will stop idolizing actors. For the most part they're imaginative idiots. They generally don't have a lot of knowledge but are obsessed with being the center of attention. This leads them to speak with authority on subjects they know nothing about by making up facts. Generally they don't even realize they're lying.
I know it sounds harsh, but actors are generally not that bright.

One of relatively few TV recommendations my father ever made that was really to my tastes. Apparently he and my mother used to fight over him watching it because she was jealous of Anne Francis. He made a concerted effort to name my sister Anne in retaliation, which lead to her being named Martha Lorine and getting a Junior tacked on her to boot when neither of them could settle on anything better than copy-pasting a parental moniker - which had happened to me four years previously when mom tried to name me after an old boyfriend dad had displaced.
