Negative: As everyone is feeling, I hate that I am looking up videos for this kind of thing to make a few for my elderly father. Positive: The seam ripper pleats and pipe cleaners for the nose, oh my gosh...amazing! Melanie, thank you for making this video in such a clear and clean method.

Just a few quick suggestions if you don't have pipe cleaners for a fitted mask (not all ideal, but we can use what we have):
      * Twist Ties given in garbage bag boxes (some might have a "paper covering" over the wire while others might have plastic)
      * Twist Ties used for bags containing bread; hamburger & hot dog buns; bagels; tortillas; etc al. (again, some might have a "paper covering" over the wire while others might have plastic)
*Garden wire (usually made with a wire inside & covered w/a green plastic -- used to help support plants).
Good luck everyone & a big thank you to all who are making these for their communities! 👍

I used a piece of aluminum fencing wire with the ends curved over, and I stitched around it instead of over it. It holds its shape well and is much easier to bend than steel wire like a coat hanger. Garden wire seems like the next best choice.

One hack for making the tape if you don't have the bias tape maker: Pin a safety pin to the ironing board. Finger-press the fabric for the tie and thread it through the safety pin, then pull it through and hit it with the iron as you go.

This is the best mask video I've seen. I did modify it some by encasing the pipe cleaner in bias tape before sewing it the the inside seam of the mask as I put the mask together. It made it a lot quicker and easier then sewing it directly into the mask fabric itself after the mask is almost finished.

I very much agree that this is a great tutorial, my sister is a nurse. Under her guidance, I bought 5 packs of organic cotton muslin cloths on the DEFONO store on Amazon as the fabric of the mask. I made 26 masks for healthcare workers. If you need fabric I recommend it to you

Hmmm... I wonder about using muslin fabric for masks; often the weave is a bit loose, which would not make it good for this.
Good quality 100% cotton quilting fabrics are typically recommended. How tightly woven is that muslin cloth?

Lots of discussion on the best materials the last few days... but I'd just like to emphasize a couple of points:
    1) the combination of your fabric/materials MUST BE BREATHABLE. Many videos appear to use fabric that looks way to thick. Hold the layers up to your mouth, if you can't reasonably breathe through the layers - then the wearer will end up breathing around the mask rather than through the mask, thereby significantly diminishing the mask's effectiveness.
    2) Seems like most experts are agreeing that 100% cotton is the best fabric for most home made masks; t-shirts and bed sheets (reasonably tightly woven) are getting many recommendations and are readily available. I have had good luck with three layers of well worn/washed cotton sateen sheets. I'm guessing about 600 thread count. Also, the US Surgeon General has a video on how to make a mask out of a cotton t-shirt.
    3) As a bonus, you can also use the elastic from a fitted sheet as ties.
    4) be very very very cautious of any materials designed for cleaning or other specialty purposes (e.g., vacuum cleaner bags, disposable diapers, microfiber towels, etc...), they may (probably) have hazardous chemicals resulting from the manufacturing or treatment processes.
    5) I found the pipe cleaners not quite strong stiff enough for my needs. Paper clips weren't any better. Try standard 16 gauge solid insulated house wiring (just one wire, not the combination of 3 or 4 wires in standard house wiring). It works very well. Just curl the ends back and crimp. It won't rust and the insulation provides a bit of cushion. Often hardware stores have small scraps laying around and will give them away for free.
    ...

It's been a couple of days and I've spent the day haunting the internet to find out the hard data - with everything changing so frequently, there's almost no way to keep up completely.
They actually recommend a heavy calico that is a poly cotton blend. Trying to keep in mind that the people doing the tests are not, for the most part, fabric savvy, they call it "quilter's cotton" when it's really a good tight woven poly cotton.
I'm sure everyone is going to be experimenting with what they have around the house. I wouldn't want that tight a fit in a 'surgery' style mask. That's my preference. (I have too much experience wearing masks that are fitted and trying to breathe through them while working outside. Not fun.
Yes, I did see an article that seemed to suggest that vacuum cleaner bags made good filters. From what I understand, it's more the sturdy non-woven lining of the bags that does the trick. I've seen coffee filters suggested, as well as felt or sew-in interfacing. I agree you should be very careful with whatever you decide to use.
I wish you good fortune as you work your way through this time of trouble. At least we all get to spend a little time evaluating our lives and making new choices or reaffirming the old ones.
      Best thoughts.

Just sharing from what I've seen (not my idea): ponytail holders for elastic. One lady in a video uses a thin piece of t-shirt since it stretches well (so does nylon). My idea for the nose piece is the rubbery garden wire ties (found at Dollar Tree) Thank you Melanie for your mask making video. I learned about the bias tape maker, wow. Very loving and kind gesture to the world. God bless our country and prayers to those of you affected by the coronavirus. Amen

Unfortunately, most ponytail holders are a bit too short for this. However, I have seen/read that the narrow elastic headbands (cut in half) are definitely useful for this.

Mrs. Mobley Hi! For my own, I folded it to form a triangle at the bottom of the mask so it curved around my chin. Then I sewed it down in the same way as Melanie showed for the side pleats. My bottom pleat ended up being slightly larger than the side pleats made with the seam ripper.
Since I couldn’t fit the masks that I made for family members, I just made a mark at the half way point on the bottom of the mask and added one “seam ripper pleat” there.

This is a great mask. I talk to a lot of nurses and doctors and I guess they are having problems with the string or elastic behind the ear. They are all starting to bleed from wearing them all day. It would be great if you could show a crochet tutorial for a little band that has buttons on each side that they can wrap the elastic of the mask around so the elastic doesn’t tough the ear. I crocheted a bag full and gave them to doctors and nurses here in Phoenix and they were so grateful and thankful. They asked how they could get more. They loved them!

Thanks much this video was a great help and my 1st mask came out close to perfect. I didn't have any pipe cleaner, but I did have some bendable wire I had gotten in the hardware section of the dollar tree. I cut a 4 inch piece then I put it between some masking tape, though I would have preferred using surgical tape since it has material. I also sewed it with the zigzag to hold it in place and that worked perfectly. I was almost finished at close to 2 am since I started my project late, and on the last 2 inches of tie #2 ran out of bobbin thread...calling it a night/morning and will finish up when I wake. Thanks again Melanie ! You are awesome !

I cut the fabric a bit larger, 10 by 7. Using the seam ripper to do the pleats really helped. I marked the middle pleat first and measured the other two 1.5 inches out. I didn't have a bias maker so I cut the ties 2" wide and that was easier to do the folding/ironing/sewing. I didn't have pipe cleaners, but did have some tie wraps leftover from some computer hardware. They were round, plastic covered wire, and large, heavy, and sturdy enough to bend over the nose. A wide zig-zag stitch and a straight stitch at each end worked very well to hold it in place.
I made the first two masks w the ties, but they are kinda hard to use when you throw your hair into a ponytail. I finally found some elastic in a storage bin and will do that pattern for the next two masks. It was time consuming to make the tie strips, so it should be much quicker with the elastic loops.

Excellent tutorial for this not-very-experienced seamstress! I was able to use some jewelry wire since I didn't have pipe cleaners around. Since I didn't want the wire poking our faces since it's harder than pipe cleaner, I made it the full length of the mask. My husband didn't want tie-ribbons and we didn't have elastic, so I was able to make the strings wrap around the ear, but that does require measuring individual faces/ears. Currently using a Chemex coffee filter for the insert, but looking for something more substantial. Thank you!

I’ve been making all sorts of fun stuff with my 3 year old daughter including a Princess Elsa dress.. I’ve watched so many of your videos to learn how to do some of this stuff. Loved the beginner quilt lessons. We’ll be making her first quilt together thanks to you. I’ve watched a TON of how to sew videos and yours are the best. Thanks for sharing 👍🏻

I tried this out, and cut four layers 9” by 7”, two of the front fabrics are batik one of the best dense weave and breathable quilting fabrics and the other two are white premium quilting cotton with a light pattern, according to a N.Y. times article on what’s the best fabric to use in a mask ....they tested them assuming it’s all air tight. My next try at this will be 9 by 7.5” with the pleats A little more room on the sides is necessary. Also I made the pleats Inset about 3/4” from the side so as not to sew through so many layers! That helped a lot! Maybe even further Inset say 1 inch may be better. Suggest top stitching the side before doing the pleats I was aiming for as flat along the cheeks as possible to prevent air being drawn in. Minimal pleats do help with that so I like her method for pleats just not right on the seam where its a lot of fabric. I don’t have pipe cleaner and it seems hard to find presently (long lead times on shipping) so I used a covered wire, like 16 gauge wire with a plastic covering from my husbands stash of tools stuff. I did 2” strips for the sides I think that was better to work with it’s smaller than the usual binding. And clips are good to keep from making any more holes than necessary! Thanks for the video.

It's very sad the world needs these tutorials but it's also very helpful for those of us who have to wear masks regularly for health reasons. Finally some fun and easy variety and well done tutorials! Thank you.

Please Forward to all sewers everywhere. I don’t know how to post this on line. Anybody receiving this, please pass it on as you see fit.
I am sewing masks for one person who has had a brain injury and tying strings behind the head is just too hard. I also am sewing for one person who has the use of only one hand, as well as for a number of people with bad shoulder injuries. I don’t have elastic, so I have been using cloth ribbon.
To make a mask that you can put on one handed or which requires tying no strings, or reaching behind the head ( can be used for either pleated or contoured masks):
    1. Determine which side is the persons most mobile side.
    2. On that side, sew in two button holes on the edge of the mask, top and bottom.
    3. On the other side sew in the ends of the ties.
    4. Thread ties through button holes.
    5. If you can find them, put both ties through a plastic spring toggle such as are used on stuff sacks.
    6. Knot ends of ties so they don’t come back out of the toggle.
    7. Even if you don’t have a toggle, this allows mask to be put on and adjusted by tying only one set of strings and it is not behind your head so you can see it in a mirror and you are not stretching your shoulders.
Happy sewing and godspeed to all
    Doris

I've been trying your idea. I found if I use TWO loops on each side (four total) (I make them with #10 crochet thread (chain and one line of single crochet-create a circle. If using the circle, the little loops could be caught in a tab of the tie tape material, making the sewing easier), I can create a closure similar to D ring, but SOFTER. Works like the neck strap on a chef apron. I am concerned that pinching a toggle to open or close may be difficult for weaker fingers. I didn't care for the bulk of tied bow. I haven't finished a good prototype, but tried it with the one I made using single loops. Be crocheting a circle, there is a stronger installation -- ends can escape! PS I'm finished making masks for awhile, but wanted a prototype on hand in case there is another wave.
