As a total rookie at running an excavator, your advice at 17 minutes of how to bridge a gap was absolutely fantastic and allowed me to get a nice trench tie in in a tricky spot! Thanks!
Don't know if you have time to answer questions on your older videos but, is there a guide or good way to determine what size pipe you need? I know it will be based on the max flow at any given time but, is there a basic way to kind of guesstimate? Thanks
Thanks for making this was exactly what I was looking for. Fantastic job for great safety tips also included I’m 82 and love learning with these videos will be doing thes for my neighbor 🤗
Another good one! Keep em coming! Have you ever done a comprehensive excavator maintenance video? Greasing, checking fluids, tracks, bucket teeth, etc? Might be helpful to some.
I just posted how to do this on another video you had and your pretty much answered all my questions in this video. Only thing I wanted to see that I didn’t was what the other side of the culvert looked like. Thank you
They are fast and they are fun. Heavy on the fun side which is the most important part of any tool in any trade for any man.👍 Oh... remembering to bring fly dope is also worth mentioning. Nice vid
Seems with water coming down the hillside it would erode the vertical bank you cut at the pipes entrance end. DId you consider filling the entrance hole with larger gravels or riprap to keep the hillside from eroding off into the pipe? Or have you tried something like that in the past with negative results?
I was back at this job a couple days ago to look at doing some more work. Hadn't eroded at all but that could change at any time. Adding rip rap is never a bad idea
Really enjoyed the video and great education. I'm new to the excavator (just bought a vio50 @ auction). I'm curious what size bucket was that? It looks huge! Mine came with a 12"bucket but I just ordered a Tag 36"and a Tag hydraulic thumb for it.
@@DigginLife21 oh geez! It looks huge. I was going to get the 24" but for just $400 I got the 36". Keep up the great instruction. I subscribed tonight.
Glad I went searchin thru your older videos. I’m doing almost this exact same job. Except I am doing it on a paved road so I have to cut out the pavement and I am using my little Sub compact TLB. Oh and this is my first culvert job. **On a related note, what do you consider the proper amount of time from the time you go look at a job until you submit your estimate to the potential customer?
2 questions. 1) would you guarantee this for any length of time, 2) why didn't you put any rocks in the head end and leave it open? Thanks, great videos
Love your videos hate to bother you but I have a question on my driveway would love to have your opinion on how to fix it thanks hope you are doing well.
I live in the mountains of North Carolina. I have a steep driveway, gravel driveway. This wouldn’t do anything, wouldn’t I need to run the pipe vertical on each side of the road, the pipe with the little holes in it so all the water can drain
@@DigginLife21 you’re right, the more time I spend messing with this land and looking at it every day the more I’m starting to see how the water flows and I’m developing an idea of what I need to do. Moved here from Florida where everything is flat and simple. But I’m learning! Thank you. 🙏
It can be a tough one to figure. A standard culvert pipe for our area is 15 inch. But when figuring for a creek or erosion situation I will measure the depth of a creek and multiply that by 3. That will be the inside diameter of the pipe I choose. (Most of the time). You can also measure from the top edge of the erosion line (where water comes up to during a typical rain) multiply that by three. That too will generally work.
I need to solve a similar problem, there are already a trench dug. Now I need to find material to put over the culvert. I am thinking that rocks and sand are bad options because water may go through the rocks or sand without passing the culvert. But I don't want to use soil (high clay content) either. I guess I must find out some other material to put upon the culvert.
Using the boom swing function you can dig square without tracking. Its a pain when the swing is on foot pedal but you get used to it after a few buckets. Bobcats are nice because the boom swing is on the left thumb and you actually find yourself using it all the time when you have it. Nice job tightening up the grades before putting down gravel
May I ask...I'm starting in business to make some cash on side. I'm on dialysis and NEED extra $ due to unable to work f/t. 1st of all I know what everyone says about my decision, but it's what I can afford right now given my health $ituation. I'm buying a 1.2 ton mini excavator and would like to know what jobs can I start with little experience ? Please get a new locking pin for your quick coupler. 😉😆. I lost one two winters ago while switching from ripper to digging bucket on my 35-6. That ringing drove me crazy 😂
You're worried about your thumb I always close mine and everything is on the ground I do not trust hydraulics one guy at the mine was killed operating a 250 ton truck...

Great to hear!
Awesome. Thanks for taking the time to educate us and make us laugh too at times. Yes, I will wear my seatbelt 😁
Best part is I did this 2 weeks ago and was almost spot on with you . Can't thank you enough !!!
Thanks for being here Blake. Culvert installs are always fun
This is VERY educational and the content is great. I know I am going to learn something because you are out on the ground!
Thank you Aaron 👍👍👍
Great video. Made me envious, haven't been on a big piece of equipment in about 30 years... I miss "playing in the dirt". Chief
Nice job man, entertaining to watch. What I need to do won't involve as much work but this was very helpful.

Todd -- Why do you move the dirt to the side instead of to the front of the trench? Appreciate your videos, learning a lot!
Bridging the trench for me as a new operator a couple months ago was a tight sphincter moment for sure! But hey, it worked and I did it!

Really good job with your explanations. Learned a few things.
Thank you for knowing the "bell" end is not the cut end! Haha soooo many get this wrong. Many other great pointers! I'm recommending your channel
Thanks Bruce!!!
Would you ever put sand or any material under the pipe before you place the pipe in the ditch?
Only if there is bedrock that makes grading before placing pipe impossible

Do you ever install an inlet on the culvert pipe to help funnel water in? Or do you find it unnecessary?

@@DigginLife21 my pleasure
Having a good size bowl at the top of the pipe will help slow the flow a bit there, reducing chance of erosion. A river slows where it widens.
True story
I was surprised that you didn't add at least one or two buckets of stone to the outlet end to help control water fall erosion?
I live in the mountains of North Carolina. I have a steep driveway, gravel driveway. This wouldn’t do anything, wouldn’t I need to run the pipe vertical on each side of the road, the pipe with the little holes in it so all the water can drain

How do you size your pipe? I think my state requires 15" minimum.
Great question Mike!!! It varies but yes…15 inch is standard if it doesn’t have constant water flow
@@DigginLife21 I'm currently building a driveway. I couldn't find anything about culvert spacing. I might put one every 250'. Thoughts?

What is the rule of thumb for determining pipe diameter?

What we do at work is normally use 15 for driveways and 18 for cross road pipes
Hi Todd hey have you ever thought of putting a rotating bucket adapter on your machine ?
I’ve definitely been planning on a tilt bucket

Crusher run, ABC, Crush and run works really well as an alternative to soil.

Why don't you put the dirt on the other side of the road and then pull the dirt back on the pipe instead of putting it behind you
The road needs ditched pipe won’t do any good if the water can’t get to it
👍
If he didn’t move it to the side he wouldn’t be able to see what he’s doing

Remember, measure once, cut twice. In the event it is too short, cut again.
