I put reflective tape i get from parts store they put on sides of truck trailors you can see them bobbing up and down 1/2 mile with spot light at night packs of tape are silver and red cut them with scissors do a lot of them with one pack.
I made 10 of these following capt cotontops instructions. My first time out using them caught 3 monster catfish in no time at all. My pool floats were a little too long though. Still catches fish, just don't turn vertical. Thanks cotontop!
I've been using these kinds of "jugs" here in Texas for around ten years now and they're an extremely fun and productive method of filling up the freezer with catfish! I have a few suggestions and notes if you don't mind: I found that the free floating jug line is a pain in the butt. I use 3" PVC filled with concrete as a cheap weight to keep my jugs from blowing all over the lake. Also, I use 250 lb. tarred nylon as my main line, about 20' long. I tie loops in this line and make removable stagings for my hooks. I make these out of a smaller, different color tarred line with swivels and trot line clips. The different color makes it easier to tell the difference between the staging and the main line when you get tangles. The swivel helps to prevent tangles (catfish like to spin) and the trot line clip makes the stagings removable. Using removable stagings allows you to pre-bait hooks and significantly speeds up deployment and re-baiting of your jugs. Also, when you have a fish on a jug you can remove the staging with the fish and go straight to the box, replace the staging with a freshly baited one and go on down the line. Some states require that your jugs be white. I've found that wrapping the noodle with white duct tape is the easiest fix for this as I have yet to find white pool noodles. Lastly, I've found that 7/O hooks are the perfect size. I've caught some tiny channel cats on a 7/O circle, and they will more easily handle the 50 lb. class blues and oppalusas. I used to use 5/O and I had too many broken and twisted hooks. Thanks for your video! You are spot on about the circle hooks and I like the way you use the rod stock to turn the jug into a "flagging" jug! I think I'm going to modify mine. Fish on!
I put yellow reflective tape on the top cap, so that I can see it at night. My experience with the rebar inside the noodle was that I was not catching as many cats because of the noise. When I took the rebar out, I started catching more cats. I also mark the length on each noodle, because I put a three hole brick on the bottom of the line. That allows me to fish the thermoclines indicated to me by the depth of the cats are on the fish finder. Add a couple of extra bonus feet to each line to prevent your float from sinking, if you miscalculate your depth.
I have watched a lot of jugline videos, and this is by far the best. As mentioned by someone else, I appreciated the family friendly language. Headed to the dollar store now to look for noodles. Will follow this video exactly...except for the addition of some fluorescent tape or paint. Thanks for sharing.
Just finished making my first dozen floats as a gift for my big brother. I also took several pieces of about a 6 inch piece of foam, wrote the line length on it, then wrapped the line, weight, hook, and swivel onto the piece of foam. This way he can swap out line lengths as the water depth dictates. Also, cut 5 (3 inch) pieces of different colored foam and glued them together using waterproof Gorilla Glue to make one piece of 15 inch foam. Gives the float a unique color combination. Reply
Just an idea, if you put some florescent tape on the one end you can see it at night, or spray paint the top with florescent paint, I do a lot of night fishing and you can pretty much see them for a few hundred yards and if they are bobbin you can tell. good luck.
I got to try and build us some, we are still the old coffee can jugs. Daddy has had the using for years. He would weld two coffee cans together and a nail or staple to tie your line to. Painted them black . And we use thin bank line. Yours look better and a lot easier. Thank you!
Really enjoyed your video look over some of your other videos and realized how close you are to me I'm in Pontotoc thanks for the info those Jug's look awesome
Yes sir I agree, the Texas boy call them jug. I'll use about a three inch different colored nuddle at the top to tell which one is mine on the Trinity River.
The smart thing to do once you put the nut on the inside of the cap over the washer? Once you have that nut all the way down and tightened you should strip the threads on the eye bolt with a pair of needle nose or something so it doesn't come back loose because if that nut ever comes off you're going to lose your fish. I guess that excess silicone will help glue it into place also.
Lots people use these float around noodles but I have a upgraded design been using bout 10years my noodles are stationary when fishing from shallow depths up to 30 + ft usually don’t have to fish much deeper than 35ft an have 5 hooks per noodle a depth setter an wave adjust to fish rough water
Howdy from Texas. I just watched your video last night and now I have 10 built awaiting the line, sinkers, hooks and swivels. I completed one and tried it out at the lake. It worked exactly as you said. I didn't catch any fish (probably due to the weather) but I don't see any reason why it won't. Looking forward to hauling a bunch in when the fishing gets better. It is videos like this that make life much easier.
Looks great. Hey here's an idea. Take the 2 inch leftover noodle of several different colors, stack them onto the pvc pipe and glue them together. You end up with a unique color combination for your noodle. You could even have your own personal color combination so it's easy to identify.
Here in Australia it's classed as a fixed line and there are many restrictions on where and when you can use them. Would be a great way to fish where stocks are plentiful. Another great Video Tim. I love learning about life in your great Country.

Great video!! I made a handful of jugs following your design. Everything worked great, until I got them in the water. I once set, I noticed the steel bar inside would no longer side up/down. I’m thinking I did not use the right sealant, or give it enough time to dry. I took one apart and could feel the sealant inside causing resistance. Any suggestions on what type of sealant I should use on the next round?
You're the man on noodles for jugging catfish. Great video from start to finish without editing. Impressed with how comfortable you're in front of the camera. I like your design better than mine. Time to build some more. Thanks for posting this video. Kudos sir.
this is a fact--an 18 pound catfish can hold it under for about 20 seconds the first time ,as he tires out it is less and less--- Badin lake this very week--really enjoy your videos!!!
Jug lines are jug lines lol. Don't matter if it's a milk jug or a pool noodle. What's used don't change it's application. And pool noodles often provide a more user friendly method of deployment. So he can build a bridge and get over it lol. And yes this will have a lot of requests especially from more serious fishers that fish to stock the freezer. 20 of these plus a few rods can be a real game changer. These basicly do what a bank line will but these can be deployed in the middle of the lake or Creek.
in Texas we can't run orange, which sucks cause this time of year "summer" i can't find them anywhere. "It's out of season lol" but the only ones i found were orange so now im painting them white with rubberized white spray... extra money oh well. Great video!
I grew up using two and three litre bottles. Spray a little foam in the bottom then paint them with reflective paint. Only thing negative about a bottle is the amount of room it takes to store them
I basically do mine the same but no i bolt. I just my 150 lbs trot line string directly to the pvc ties easily with no slipping off problems. I also use 1" pipe but only 18" long pvc.
Hi Cotontop, I am going to definitely make some of these noodles!! One question: What size egg weight sinker do you use? It looks to be around 1 ounce, maybe 3/4 ounce?? Thanks for this great DIY how-to video!!
You talk about the noise that the half inch rod makes when it slide down tube, when I made my noodle up, I took a 12 inch noodle and cut it in half. Then I took a piece of 1/2 inch pvc 12 inches long and beveled the end so it will cut thru the noodle when you push it down through the noodle to give you a 1/2 inch plug, which you stick in the end of your pvc, then you can glue your end cap on , that has the eyelet to it. Slide in your rod, put on the other cap. Slide it back and forth, no noice when it slides to eyelet end.
I got so excited that I went out, got the stuff and made me a mess of noodles. Then I finally remembered, I DON'T EVEN HAVE A BOAT!!!! But I have a whole bucked of Noodles.... Then I started making WINE. I now have some mighty fine WINE...to drink until I get a boat.
Yep, here in Iowa it's two jugs per license, up to two hooks per jug, and you must have your contact info on it. But Randy J is right on, a jug is whatever floats that you tie a catfish rig onto!
Awesome video making some at the moment, was acctually curious on the diameter of the noodle your using? Ive found 3inch 3.5 inch and 2 inch just curious on what to use or what would work best
75% of all blues caught on Kerr lake nc over 30 lbs are lost when they are horsed in on 20 ft of line. I cut a salt rod pole down to about 15 inches long and with a snap hook on it and snap in to jug. Play them for awhile then you can get them next to boat. Lose alot less fish that way.. 50 lbers not unusal.. GRIZ
Thank you Sir for this video! One of the best tutorials on these jugs so far! One question, how about using these land or a bridge, which I will be doing. Do I put the reel in line through the same hole as the leader, or on the opposite side of jug??
Well, not leader, but I mean the same place the bate line is connected to on the noodle? A dumb question, but am new to these. You got another subscriber btw.
25 Per person? Wowee. Here in Iowa it's max 2 jugs per license, max two hooks per jug. But you are right, that does look like the ULTIMATE catfishing "jug".
Catfish won't run far. Sometimes they just lay in the bottom after getting hooked. You just hang out in your boat and drive up to them when you see one tripped upright in the water.
Thank you for sharing! Please correct me if im wrong. 1/2 PVC is the inside dimension. 5/8ths Rod is 1/8 bigger in diameter ?? 5/8ths rod will not fit inside 1/2" PVC. Im wrong 1/2 PVC inside dimension is really 0.622 of 1"
If the hole is small enough, use a toothpick. If it has a big hole, I wrap the fishing line twice through weight. I use 50# line and even with a big fish it’s fine.
Thanks for the information on how to make the ultimate catfish noodle so far you have the best jug fishing that I've ever seen
I put reflective tape i get from parts store they put on sides of truck trailors you can see them bobbing up and down 1/2 mile with spot light at night packs of tape are silver and red cut them with scissors do a lot of them with one pack.

I was thinking the same thing but red LOL
Wouldn't adding additional feet defeat the purpose of it being a float? Supposed to tire the fish out
Thanks for taking the time to show this process in detail.

That’s a great point about noodling vs. jugging and I agree.

you are allowed to have 2 hooks in the water. yes it is legal up to a point
Randy J do you have to put your name address and phone number on em?
Yep, here in Iowa it's two jugs per license, up to two hooks per jug, and you must have your contact info on it. But Randy J is right on, a jug is whatever floats that you tie a catfish rig onto!
Awesome video! What size are those lead sinkers?
Good video. Thanks for sharing
Awesome video making some at the moment, was acctually curious on the diameter of the noodle your using? Ive found 3inch 3.5 inch and 2 inch just curious on what to use or what would work best
I like whatever fits the tightest onto the pvc.
Would there be any disadvantages to using an eye bolt with wood screw threads? Seems like that would simplify construction and save silicon
GRIZ
Fine job 👍👏👏🤠
Great idea, thank you for sharing.......
I would run 18" noodle and 2' pvc and i caugt a 165 pd. Alligator gar he would take it down and run and back to the surface
Use the threaded screw eyes and you don't have buy silicone or washers. Drill pilot hole and screw em in
yes sir. great video.
What do you use to cut the threaded rod?
This was in my feed today. I learned a lot. Whats your tat of. I cant see it for glare and glistening sweet.
Awesome Tim great vid
Made some like these this past weekend lost two of them on the Ohio river due to fish pulling them under and not coming back up.
Good job, sir.
+EatnLunch yeah and if u do have 2 people and u drop just 40 in the water, u have flat got ur work cut out for u. Lol
cotontop3 I can’t really even imagine trying to keep up with that
Great idea.
Nice tool box
I have one
What do you tie these off to to keep the fish from traveling with it?
Catfish won't run far. Sometimes they just lay in the bottom after getting hooked. You just hang out in your boat and drive up to them when you see one tripped upright in the water.
Us country boys will survive 😉
Thank you for sharing! Please correct me if im wrong. 1/2 PVC is the inside dimension. 5/8ths Rod is 1/8 bigger in diameter ?? 5/8ths rod will not fit inside 1/2" PVC. Im wrong 1/2 PVC inside dimension is really 0.622 of 1"
If u use the thin pvc and not schedule 40, it will fit.
Thanks for the design. I made 15 yesterday. What do you use to peg your sinker with?
If the hole is small enough, use a toothpick. If it has a big hole, I wrap the fishing line twice through weight. I use 50# line and even with a big fish it’s fine.
Hey bossman what is the measurement of your noodles across at the top? Trying too find some just like yours so I can fit in a five gallon bucket lol?
